We analyze the evolution of hydrodynamic fluctuations for QCD matter below $T_c$ in the chiral limit, where the pions (the Goldstone modes) must be treated as additional non-abelian superfluid degrees of freedom, reflecting the broken $SU_L(2) \times SU_R(2)$ symmetry of the theory. In the presence of a finite pion mass $m_π$, the hydrodynamic theory is ordinary hydrodynamics at long distances, and superfluid-like at short distances. The presence of the superfluid degrees of freedom then gives specific contributions to the bulk viscosity, the shear viscosity, and diffusion coefficients of the ordinary theory at long distances which we compute. This determines, in some cases, the leading dependence of the transport parameters of QCD on the pion mass. We analyze the predictions of this computation, as the system approaches the $O(4)$ critical point.
Starting from low energy effective chiral Lagrangian with gauged Wess-Zumino Witten term, we have derived a hydrodynamic theory for chiral superfluid. It is a non-abelian hydrodynamics at zero temperature with only superfluid components. With an external electromagnetic field and baryonic and axial baryonic chemical potentials turned on, we are able to identify analogs of various anomaly induced term in normal hydrodynamics, including chiral vortical effect, chiral magnetic effect and chiral electric effect. As an example, we solved the hydrodynamic equations for the ground state and observed …
We prove that ideal chiral hydrodynamics, as derived from chiral kinetic theory, is acausal and its initial-value problem is ill-posed both in the linearized case around a local equilibrium solution and also in the full nonlinear regime. Therefore, such theory cannot be used to determine how the chiral anomaly affects the hydrodynamic evolution. We show that these fundamental issues can be fixed by using different definitions (frames) for the hydrodynamic fields. This leads to a causal theory of ideal chiral hydrodynamics where the vorticity strength is constrained by the coefficient that enco…
By making use of a covariant formulation of the chiral kinetic theory in the relaxation-time approximation, we derive the first-order dissipative hydrodynamics equations for a charged chiral plasma with background electromagnetic fields. We identify the global equilibrium state for a rotating chiral plasma confined to a cylindrical region with realistic boundary conditions. Then, by using linearized hydrodynamic equations, supplemented by the Maxwell equations, we study hydrodynamic modes of magnetized rotating chiral plasma in the regimes of high temperature and high density. We find that, in…
We discuss a possible dependence of the chiral magnetic effect (CME) on the elliptic flow coefficient v2. We first study this in a hydrodynamic model for a static anisotropic plasma with multiple anomalous U(1) currents. In the case of two charges, one axial and one vector, the CME formally appears as a first-order transport coefficient in the vector current. We compute this transport coefficient and show its dependence on v2. We also determine the CME-coefficient from first-order corrections to the dual AdS background using the fluid-gravity duality. For small anisotropies, we find numerical …
We analyze the combined effects of hydrodynamic fluctuations and chiral magnetic effect (CME) for a chiral medium in the presence of a background magnetic field. Based on the recently developed non-equilibrium effective field theory, we show fluctuations give rise to a CME-related positive contribution to magnetoresistance, while the early studies without accounting for the fluctuations find a CME-related negative magnetoresistance. At zero axial relaxation rate, the fluctuations contribute to the transverse conductivity in addition to the longitudinal one.
Towards modelling the charge asymmetry observed in heavy ion collisions, we present here analytic solutions of relativistic hydrodynamics containing parity violating and anomalous terms at the first order in the hydrodynamic approximation. These terms can induce chiral magnetic and chiral vortical effect leading to the generation of the charge asymmetry. We also consider sphaleron solutions with non trivial winding number to model the phenomenon. We calculate the net chiral charge difference produced in our solutions. We anticipate their relevance also in the context of baryogenesis in early u…
We derive a hydrodynamical description of the eigenvalues of the chiral Dirac spectrum in the vacuum and in the large $N$ (volume) limit. The linearized hydrodynamics supports sound waves. The stochastic relaxation of the eigenvalues is captured by a hydrodynamical instanton configuration which follows from a pertinent form of Euler equation. The relaxation from a phase of localized eigenvalues and unbroken chiral symmetry to a phase of de-localized eigenvalues and broken chiral symmetry occurs over a time set by the speed of sound. We show that the time is $Δτ=πρ(0)/2βN$ with $ρ(0)$ the spect…
By making use of the chiral kinetic theory in the relaxation-time approximation, we derive an Israel-Stewart type formulation of the hydrodynamic equations for a chiral relativistic plasma made of neutral particles (e.g., neutrinos). The effects of chiral asymmetry are captured by including an additional continuity equation for the axial charge, as well as the leading-order quantum corrections due to the spin of particles. In a formulation of the chiral kinetic theory used, we introduce a symmetric form of the energy-momentum tensor that is suitable for the description of a weakly nonuniform c…

We study the hydrodynamic regime of chiral plasmas at high temperature. We find a new type of gapless collective excitation induced by chiral effects in an external magnetic field. This is a transverse wave, and it is present even in incompressible fluids, unlike the chiral magnetic and chiral vortical waves. The velocity is proportional to the coefficient of the gravitational anomaly. We briefly discuss the possible relevance of this "chiral Alfvén wave" in physical systems.
We study the turbulent regime of chiral (magneto)hydrodynamics for charged and neutral matter with chirality imbalance. We find that the chiral magnetohydrodynamics for charged plasmas possesses a unique scaling symmetry, only without fluid helicity under the local charge neutrality. We also find a different type of unique scaling symmetry in the chiral hydrodynamics for neutral matter with fluid helicity in the inertial range. We show that these symmetries dictate the self-similar inverse cascade of the magnetic and kinetic energies. Our results imply the possible inverse energy cascade in co…
We review derivations of the chiral magnetic effect (ChME) in hydrodynamic approximation. The reader is assumed to be familiar with the basics of the effect. The main challenge now is to account for the strong interactions between the constituents of the fluid. The main result is that the ChME is not renormalized: in the hydrodynamic approximation it remains the same as for non-interacting chiral fermions moving in an external magnetic field. The key ingredients in the proof are general laws of thermodynamics and the Adler-Bardeen theorem for the chiral anomaly in external electromagnetic fiel…
We compute quasinormal modes (QNMs) of the metric and gauge field perturbations about black branes electrically and magnetically charged in the Einstein-Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory. By the gauge/gravity correspondence, this theory is dual to a particular class of field theories with a chiral anomaly, in a thermal charged plasma state subjected to a constant external magnetic field, $B$. The QNMs are dual to the poles of the two-point functions of the energy-momentum and axial current operators, and they encode information about the dissipation and transport of charges in the plasma. Complement…
In the framework of chiral kinetic theory (CKT), we consider a system of right- and left-handed Weyl fermions out of thermal equilibrium in a homogeneous weak magnetic field. We show that the Lorentz invariance implies a modification in the definition of the momentum current in the phase space, compared to the case in which the system is in global equilibrium. Using this modified momentum current, we derive the linearized conservation equations from the kinetic equation up to second order in the derivative expansion. It turns out that the eigenmodes of these equations, namely the hydrodynamic …
Matter with chiral fermions is microscopically described by theory with quantum anomaly and macroscopically described (at low energy) by anomalous hydrodynamics. For such systems in the presence of external magnetic field and chirality imbalance, a charge current is generated along the magnetic field direction --- a phenomenon known as the Chiral Magnetic Effect (CME). The quark-gluon plasma created in relativistic heavy ion collisions provides an (approximate) example, for which the CME predicts a charge separation perpendicular to the collisional reaction plane. Charge correlation measuremen…
The conservation of an axial current modified by the gravitational chiral anomaly implies the universal transport phenomenon (Kinematical Vortical Effect) dependent solely on medium vorticity and acceleration but not dependent explicitly on its temperature and density. This general analysis is verified for the case of massless fermions with spin 1/2.
This is a brief report of work performed in arXiv:1106.3576. We consider the chiral transport terms in a relativistic charged superfluid, and their relation to triangle anomalies. The terms allowed by the Second Law of thermodynamics have been worked out. A simplified form is proposed on heuristic grounds, from an analysis of the better-understood chiral effects in normal fluids. We point out the appearance of a "chiral electric conductivity", and relate it through an educated guess to the axial anomaly coefficient.
We address the issue of evaluating chiral effects (such as the newly discovered chiral separation) in hydrodynamic approximation. The main tool we use is effective theory which defines interaction in terms of chemical potentials $μ,μ_5$. In the lowest order in $μ,μ_5$ we reproduce recent results based on thermodynamic considerations. In higher orders the results depend on details of infrared cutoff. Another point of our interest is an alternative way of the anomaly matching through introduction of effective scalar fields arising in the hydrodynamic approximation.
The rate of vacuum changing topological solutions of the gluon field, sphalerons, is estimated to be large at the typical temperatures of heavy-ion collisions, particularly at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. Such windings in the gluon field are expected to produce parity-odd bubbles, which cause separation of positively and negatively charged quarks along the axis of the external magnetic field. This chiral magnetic effect can be mimicked by Chern-Simons modified electromagnetism. Here we present a model of relativistic hydrodynamics including the effects of axial anomalies via the Chern-…
In certain circumstances, chiral (parity-violating) medium can be described hydrodynamically as a chiral fluid with microscopic quantum anomalies. Possible examples of such systems include strongly coupled quark-gluon plasma, liquid helium 3He-A, neutron stars and the Early Universe. We study first-order hydrodynamics of a chiral fluid on a vortex background and in an external magnetic field. We show that there are two previously undiscovered modes describing heat waves propagating along the vortex and magnetic field. We call them the Thermal Chiral Vortical Wave and Thermal Chiral Magnetic Wa…
We study the collective excitations in a relativistic fluid with an anomalous $U(1)$ current. In $3+1$ dimensions at zero chemical potential, in addition to ordinary sound modes we find two propagating modes in presence of an external magnetic field. The first one which is a transverse degenerate mode, propagates with a velocity proportional to the coefficient of gravitational anomaly; this is in fact the Chiral Alfvén wave recently found in \cite{Yamamoto:2015ria}. Another one is a wave of density perturbation, namely a chiral magnetic wave (CMW). The velocity dependence of CMW on the chiral …
Nonlinear transport phenomena induced by the chiral anomaly are explored within a 4D field theory defined holographically as $U(1)_V\times U(1)_A$ Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory in Schwarzschild-$AdS_5$. First, in presence of external electromagnetic fields, a general form of vector and axial currents is derived. Then, within the gradient expansion up to third order, we analytically compute all (over 50) transport coefficients. A wealth of higher order (nonlinear) transport phenomena induced by chiral anomaly are found beyond the Chiral Magnetic and Chiral Separation Effects. Some of the higher o…
We compute the dynamical relaxation times for chiral transport phenomena in strongly coupled regime using the AdS/CFT correspondence. These relaxation times can be a useful proxy for the dynamical time scale for achieving equilibrium spin-polarization of quasi-particles in the presence of magnetic field and fluid vorticity. We identify the Kubo relations for these relaxation times and clarify some previous issues regarding time-dependence of the Chiral Vortical Effect. We study the consequences of imposing time-reversal invariance on parity-odd thermal noise fluctuations that are related to ch…
We study the hydrodynamics of a gas of noninteracting Weyl fermions coupled to the electromagnetic field in $(2N + 1) + 1$ spacetime dimensions using the chiral kinetic theory, which encodes the gauge anomaly in the Chern character of the nonabelian Berry connection over the Fermi surface. We derive the anomalous contributions to the relativistic hydrodynamic currents in equilibrium and at a finite temperature, which agree with and provides an approach complementary to the results derived previously using thermodynamic constraints.
New Broer-Kaup type systems of hydrodynamic equations are derived from the derivative reaction-diffusion systems arising in SL(2,R) Kaup-Newell hierarchy, represented in the non-Madelung hydrodynamic form. A relation with the problem of chiral solitons in quantum potential as a dimensional reduction of 2+1 dimensional Chern-Simons theory for anyons is shown. By the Hirota bilinear method, soliton solutions are constructed and the resonant character of soliton interaction is found.
Semiclassical chiral kinetic theories in the presence of electromagnetic fields as well as vorticity can be constructed by means of some different relativistic or nonrelativistic approaches. To cover the noninertial features of rotating frames one can start from the modified quantum kinetic equation of Wigner function in Minkowski spacetime. It provides a relativistic chiral transport equation whose nonrelativistic limit yields a consistent three-dimensional kinetic theory which does not depend explicitly on spatial coordinates. Recently a chiral transport equation in curved spacetime has been…
We consider chiral liquids, that is liquids consisting of massless fermions and right-left asymmetric. In such media, one expects existence of electromagnetic current flowing along an external magnetic field, associated with the chiral anomaly. The current is predicted to be dissipation-free. We consider dynamics of chiral liquids, concentrating on the issues of possible instabilities and infrared sensitivity. Instabilities arise, generally speaking, already in the limit of vanishing electromagnetic constant, $α_{el}\to 0$. In particular, liquids with non-vanishing chiral chemical potential mi…
An exact formulation of two dimensional chiral hydrodynamics with diffeomorphism and conformal anomalies is provided. The constitutive relation involving the stress tensor is computed. It reveals a one parameter class of solutions which is a new result. For a particular value of this parameter, the results found in the gradient expansion scheme are reproduced. Moreover, the constitutive relation is analogous to the corresponding relation for an ideal fluid, appropriately modified to include the chirality property, which has also been derived here.
We extend an infrared-deformed soft-wall anti de-Sitter/QCD model at zero temperature to a model at finite temperature and perform hydrodynamics. To have the infalling boundary condition to make the hydrodynamic analysis possible, we treat the infrared energy scale factor in our metric as a temperature-depending parameter. Then, by carrying out the hydrodynamic analysis, we compute the transport coefficients, the diffusion constant, and the shear viscosity, through the linear response theory.
In this paper, based on the principles of linear response theory, we compute the longitudinal DC conductivity associated with Lifshitz like fixed points in the presence of chiral anomalies in ($ 3+1 $) dimensions. In our analysis, apart from having the usual anomalous contributions due to chiral anomaly, we observe an additional and pure \textit{parity odd} effect to the magnetoconductivity which has its origin in the broken Lorentz (boost) invariance at a Lifshitz fixed point. We also device a holographic set up in order to compute ($ z=2 $) Lifshitz contributions to the magnetoconductivity p…
We construct the general hydrodynamic description of (3+1)-dimensional chiral charged (quantum) fluids subject to a strong external magnetic field with effective field theory methods. We determine the constitutive equations for the energy-momentum tensor and the axial charge current, in part from a generating functional. Furthermore, we derive the Kubo formulas which relate two-point functions of the energy-momentum tensor and charge current to 27 transport coefficients: 8 independent thermodynamic, 4 independent non-dissipative hydrodynamic, and 10 independent dissipative hydrodynamic transpo…
We study the non-dissipative transport effects appearing at second order in the hydrodynamic expansion for a non-interacting gas of chiral fermions by using the partition function formalism. We discuss some features of the corresponding constitutive relations, derive the explicit expressions for the conductivities and compare with existing results in the literature.
We consider the hydrodynamical model of topological Dirac semi-metal possessing two Dirac nodes separated in momentum space along a rotation axis. It has been argued that the system in question, except the chiral anomaly, is endowed with the other one $\mathbb{Z}_2$. In order to model such a system we introduce two $U(1)$-gauge fields. The presence of the additional $\mathbb{Z}_2$ anomaly leads to the non-trivial modifications of hydrodynamical equations and to the appearance of new kinetic coefficients bounded with the vorticity and the magnetic parts of Maxwell and auxiliary $U(1)$-gauge fie…
We derive a set of nontrivial relations between second-order transport coefficients which follow from the second law of thermodynamics upon considering a regime close to uniform rotation of the fluid. We demonstrate that extension of hydrodynamics by spin variable is equivalent to modifying conventional hydrodynamics by a set of second-order terms satisfying the relations we derived. We point out that a novel contribution to the heat current orthogonal to vorticity and temperature gradient reminiscent of the thermal Hall effect is constrained by the second law.
We present a new approach to discuss two dimensional chiral and non-chiral hydrodynamics with gauge and gravitational anomalies. Exact constitutive relations for the stress tensor and charge current are obtained. For the chiral theory, the constitutive relations may be put in the ideal (chiral) fluid form whereas the constitutive relations corresponding to non-chiral case do not take the ideal fluid form. The constitutive relations in the presence of both gravity and gauge sectors are new. These expressions, in the absence of the gauge sector, reproduce the results obtained in the gradient exp…
By extending the Poisson algebra of ideal hydrodynamics to include a two-index tensor field, we construct a new (2+1)-dimensional hydrodynamic theory that we call "chiral metric hydrodynamics." The theory breaks spatial parity and contains a degree of freedom which can be interpreted as a dynamical metric, and describes a medium which behaves like a solid at high frequency and a fluid with odd viscosity at low frequency. We derive a version of the Kelvin circulation theorem for the new hydrodynamics, in which the vorticity is replaced by a linear combination of the vorticity and the dynamical …
Many strongly coupled fluids are known to share similar hydrodynamic transport properties. In this work we argue that this similarity could extend beyond hydrodynamics to transient dynamics through the presence of non-hydrodynamic modes. We review non-hydrodynamic modes in kinetic theory and gauge/gravity duality and discuss their signatures in trapped Fermi gases close to unitarity. Reanalyzing previously published experimental data, we find hints of non-hydrodynamic modes in cold Fermi gases in two and three dimensions.
Axial anomalies give rise to interesting new transport phenomena such as the "chiral magnetic effect". We discuss how the associated transport coefficients can be studied via Kubo formulas at weak and strong coupling, the latter via gauge gravity duality. We argue for a new "chiral gravito-magnetic" (or vortical) effect sensitive to the presence of mixed gauge-gravitational anomalies.
In four dimensions Weyl fermions possess a chiral anomaly which leads to several special features in the transport phenomena, such as the negative longitudinal magnetoresistivity. In this paper, we study its inverse, the longitudinal magnetoconductivity, in the case of a chiral anomalous system with a background magnetic field B using the linear response method in the hydrodynamic limit and from holography. Our hydrodynamic results show that in general we need to have energy, momentum and charge dissipations to get a finite DC longitudinal magnetoconductivity due to the existence of the chiral…
The WZNW and string models are considered in the terms of the initial and invariant chiral currents assuming that the internal and external torsions coincide (anticoincide) and they are the structure constants of the $SU(n),SO(n),$ $SP(n)$ Lie algebras. These models are the auxiliary problems in order to construct integrable equations of hydrodynamic type. It was shown that the WZNW and string models in terms of invariant chiral currents are integrable for the constant torsion associated with the structure constants of the $SU(2),$ $SO(3),$ $SP(2)$ and $SU(3)$ algebras only. The equation of mo…
We consider chiral fluids within the standard framework of a chiral-invariant underlying field theory, anomalous in presence of electromagnetic fields. Apart from the Noether axial current of the underlying theory, in the limit of ideal fluid there exist extra conserved currents, corresponding to classical helical motions. The extra conservation laws are known to break down once viscosity is non-vanishing. Which looks puzzling, as if introduction of viscosity were inconsistent with chiral invariance. As a resolution of the puzzle, we argue that locally one can introduce an inertial frame where…
We show that the form of the chiral condition found by Abanov et al., in the quantum hydrodyamics of the Sutherland model arises because there are two distinct inner products with respect to which the chiral Hamitonian hermitian, but only one with respect to which the full, non-chiral, Hamiltonian is hermitian.
A new formula to calculate the transport coefficients of the causal dissipative hydrodynamics is derived by using the projection operator method (Mori-Zwanzig formalism) in [T. Koide, Phys. Rev. E75, 060103(R) (2007)]. This is an extension of the Green-Kubo-Nakano (GKN) formula to the case of non-Newtonian fluids, which is the essential factor to preserve the relativistic causality in relativistic dissipative hydrodynamics. This formula is the generalization of the GKN formula in the sense that it can reproduce the GKN formula in a certain limit. In this work, we extend the previous work so as…
In highly conductive metals with sufficiently strong momentum-conserving scattering, the electron momentum is regarded as a long-lived quantity, whose dynamics is described by an emergent hydrodynamic theory. In this paper, we develop an electron hydrodynamic theory for noncentrosymmetric metals, where a novel class of electron fluids is realized by lowering crystal symmetries and the resulting geometrical effects. The obtained hydrodynamic equation suggests a nontrivial analogy between electron fluids in noncentrosymmetric metals and chiral fluids in vacuum, and predicts novel hydrodynamic tr…
We derive the constitutive relations of first order charged hydrodynamics for theories with Lifshitz scaling and broken parity in $2+1$ and $3+1$ spacetime dimensions. In addition to the anomalous (in $3+1$) or Hall (in $2+1$) transport of relativistic hydrodynamics, there is an additional non-dissipative transport allowed by the absence of boost invariance. We analyze the non-relativistic limit and use a phenomenological model of a strange metal to argue that these effects can be measured in principle by using electromagnetic fields with non-zero gradients.
We study the nonlinear responses of relativistic chiral matter to the external fields, such as the electric field ${\bf E}$, gradients of temperature and chemical potential, ${\bf \nabla} T$ and ${\bf \nabla} μ$. Using the kinetic theory with Berry curvature corrections under the relaxation time approximation, we compute the transport coefficients of possible new electric currents that are forbidden in usual chirally symmetric matter, but are allowed in chirally asymmetric matter by parity. In particular, we find a new type of electric current proportional to ${\bf \nabla} μ\times {\bf E}$ due…
We develop a hydrodynamic description of the classical Calogero-Sutherland liquid: a Calogero-Sutherland model with an infinite number of particles and a non-vanishing density of particles. The hydrodynamic equations, being written for the density and velocity fields of the liquid, are shown to be a bidirectional analogue of Benjamin-Ono equation. The latter is known to describe internal waves of deep stratified fluids. We show that the bidirectional Benjamin-Ono equation appears as a real reduction of the modified KP hierarchy. We derive the Chiral Non-linear Equation which appears as a chira…
We present a consistent scheme of quantization of chiral flows (flows with extensive vorticity) in ideal hydrodynamics in two dimensions. Chiral flows occur in rotating superfluid, rotating turbulence and also in electronic systems in the magnetic field in the regime of a fractional Hall effect. The quantization is based on a geometric relation of chiral flows to two-dimensional quantum gravity and is implemented by the gravitational anomaly. The effect of the gravitational anomaly violates the major property of classical hydrodynamics, the Helmholtz law: vortices are no longer frozen into the…
We find the hydrodynamic equations of a system of particles constrained to be in the lowest Landau level. We interpret the hydrodynamic theory as a Hamiltonian system with the Poisson brackets between the hydrodynamic variables determined from the noncommutativity of space. We argue that the most general hydrodynamic theory can be obtained from this Hamiltonian system by allowing the Righi-Leduc coefficient to be an arbitrary function of thermodynamic variables. We compute the Righi-Leduc coefficients at high temperatures and show that it satisfies the requirements of particle-hole symmetry, w…
In this paper we study the dynamical properties of charged systems immersed in an external magnetic field and perturbed by a set of scalar operators breaking translations either spontaneously or pseudo-spontaneously. By combining hydrodynamic and quantum field theory arguments we provide analytic expressions for all the hydrodynamic transport coefficients relevant for the diffusive regime in terms of thermodynamic quantities and DC thermo-electric conductivities. This includes the momentum dissipation rate. We shed light on the role of the momentum dissipation rate in the transition between th…
It is well-known that chiral anomaly can be macroscopically detected through the energy and charge transport, due to the chiral magnetic effect. On the other hand, in a holographic many body system, the chaotic modes might be only associated with the energy conservation. This suggests that, perhaps, one can detect microscopic anomalies through the diagnosis of quantum chaos in such systems. To investigate this idea, we consider a magnetized brane in AdS space time with a Chern-Simons coupling in the bulk. By studying the shock wave geometry in this background, we first compute the correspondin…
We develop the theory of hydrodynamic charge and heat transport in strongly interacting quasi-relativistic systems on manifolds with inhomogeneous spatial curvature. In solid-state physics, this is analogous to strain disorder in the underlying lattice. In the hydrodynamic limit, we find that the thermal and electrical conductivities are dominated by viscous effects, and that the thermal conductivity is most sensitive to this disorder. We compare the effects of inhomogeneity in the spatial metric to inhomogeneity in the chemical potential, and discuss the extent to which our hydrodynamic theor…
