We derive a set of nontrivial relations between second-order transport coefficients which follow from the second law of thermodynamics upon considering a regime close to uniform rotation of the fluid. We demonstrate that extension of hydrodynamics by spin variable is equivalent to modifying conventional hydrodynamics by a set of second-order terms satisfying the relations we derived. We point out that a novel contribution to the heat current orthogonal to vorticity and temperature gradient reminiscent of the thermal Hall effect is constrained by the second law.
We propose an effective action for first order relativistic dissipative hydrodynamics that can be used to evaluate n-point symmetrized correlation functions, taking into account thermal fluctuations of the hydrodynamic variables.
Second-order dissipative hydrodynamic equations for each component of a multi-component system are derived using the entropy principle. The shear viscosity of the whole system, appearing in the equation summed-up over all components, is related to the partial shear pressures and cannot be considered as an external parameter. We demonstrate that it is essential to solve hydrodynamic equations for each component, instead of treating a mixture as an effective one-component system with a free parameter $η/s$. Thus, extractions of the $η/s$ value of the QGP at RHIC and LHC have to be reexamined.
A new formula to calculate the transport coefficients of the causal dissipative hydrodynamics is derived by using the projection operator method (Mori-Zwanzig formalism) in [T. Koide, Phys. Rev. E75, 060103(R) (2007)]. This is an extension of the Green-Kubo-Nakano (GKN) formula to the case of non-Newtonian fluids, which is the essential factor to preserve the relativistic causality in relativistic dissipative hydrodynamics. This formula is the generalization of the GKN formula in the sense that it can reproduce the GKN formula in a certain limit. In this work, we extend the previous work so as…
We present a new derivation of relativistic second-order dissipative hydrodynamics for quantum systems using Zubarev's non-equilibrium statistical-operator formalism. This is achieved by a systematic expansion of the energy-momentum tensor and the charge current to second order in deviations from equilibrium. As a concrete example, we obtain the relaxation equations for the shear-stress tensor, the bulk-viscous pressure, and the charge-diffusion currents required to close the set of equations of motion for relativistic second-order dissipative hydrodynamics. We also identify new transport coef…
We consider Kasner space-time describing anisotropic three dimensional expansion of the fluid and obtain the dissipative evolution equations for shear stress tensor and energy density from kinetic theory. For this, we use the iterative solution of relativistic Boltzmann equation with relaxation time approximation. We show that our results for second and third order evolution equations reduce to those of one dimensional expansion case under suitable conditions for the anisotropic parameters in Kasner space-time.
Development of a new framework for derivation of order-by-order hydrodynamics from Boltzmann equation is necessary as the widely used Anderson-Witting formalism leads to violation of fundamental conservation laws when the relaxation-time depends on particle energy, or in a hydrodynamic frame other than the Landau frame. We generalize an existing framework for consistent derivation of relativistic dissipative hydrodynamics from the Boltzmann equation with a energy-dependent relaxation-time by extending the Anderson-Witting relaxation-time approximation. We argue that the present framework is co…
We argue that different formulations of hydrodynamics are related to uncertainties in the definitions of local thermodynamic and hydrodynamic variables. We show that this ambiguity can be resolved by viewing different formulations of hydrodynamics as particular "gauge choices" which lead to the same physical behavior of the system. Using the example of bulk viscosity, we show that Bemfica-Disconzi-Noronha-Kovtun (BDNK) and Israel-Stewart hydrodynamics are particular "gauge choices" of this type, related by a well-defined transformation of thermodynamic and hydrodynamic variables. We argue that…
We derive relativistic second-order dissipative fluid-dynamical equations of motion for massive spin-1/2 particles from kinetic theory using the method of moments. Besides the usual conservation laws for charge, energy, and momentum, such a theory of relativistic dissipative spin hydrodynamics features an equation of motion for the rank-3 spin tensor, which follows from the conservation of total angular momentum. Extending the conventional method of moments for spin-0 particles, we expand the spin-dependent distribution function near local equilibrium in terms of moments of the momentum and sp…
While conventional hydrodynamics incorporating dissipative effects is hard to derive from an action principle, it is nevertheless possible to construct classical actions when the dissipative terms are switched off. In this note we undertake a systematic exploration of such constructions from an effective field theory approach and argue for the existence of non-trivial second order non-dissipative hydrodynamics involving pure energy-momentum transport. We find these fluids to be characterized by five second-order transport coefficients based on the effective action (a three parameter family is …
Space-time evolution and subsequent particle production from minimally viscous ($η/s$=0.08) QGP fluid is studied using the 2nd order Israel-Stewart's theory of dissipative relativistic fluid. Compared to ideal fluid, energy density or temperature evolves slowly in viscous dynamics. Particle yield at high $p_T$ is increased. Elliptic flow on the other hand decreases in viscous dynamics. Minimally viscous QGP fluid found to be consistent with a large number of experimental data.
We construct a Schwinger-Keldysh effective field theory for relativistic hydrodynamics for charged matter in a thermal background using a superspace formalism. Superspace allows us to efficiently impose the symmetries of the problem and to obtain a simple expression for the effective action. We show that the theory we obtain is compatible with the Kubo-Martin-Schwinger condition, which in turn implies that Green's functions obey the fluctuation-dissipation theorem. Our approach complements and extends existing formulations found in the literature.
Starting from Boltzmann equation with relaxation time approximation for the collision term and using Chapman-Enskog like expansion for distribution function close to equilibrium, we derive hydrodynamic evolution equations for the dissipative quantities directly from their definition. Although the form of the equations is identical to those obtained in traditional Israel-Stewart approaches employing Grad's 14-moment approximation and second moment of Boltzmann equation, the coefficients obtained are different. In the case of one-dimensional scaling expansion, we demonstrate that our results are…
We discuss the derivation of dissipative Bjorken hydrodynamics from a Schwarzschild black hole in asymptotically AdS spacetime of arbitrary dimension in the limit of large longitudinal proper time $τ$. Using an appropriate slicing near the boundary, we calculate the Schwarzschild metric to next-to-next-to-leading order in the large $τ$ expansion as well as the dual stress-energy tensor on the boundary via holographic renormalization. At next-to-next-to-leading order, it is necessary to perturb the Schwarzschild metric in order to maintain boost invariance. The perturbation has a power law time…
We present a new family of exact solutions of dissipative fireball hydrodynamics for arbitrary bulk and shear viscosities. The main property of these solutions is a spherically symmetric, Hubble flow field. The motivation of this paper is mostly academic: we apply non-relativistic kinematics for simplicity and clarity. In this limiting case, the theory is particularly clear: the non-relativistic Navier-Stokes equations describe the dissipation in a well-understood manner. From the asymptotic analysis of our new exact solutions of dissipative fireball hydrodynamics, we could draw a surprising c…
By making use of the chiral kinetic theory in the relaxation-time approximation, we derive an Israel-Stewart type formulation of the hydrodynamic equations for a chiral relativistic plasma made of neutral particles (e.g., neutrinos). The effects of chiral asymmetry are captured by including an additional continuity equation for the axial charge, as well as the leading-order quantum corrections due to the spin of particles. In a formulation of the chiral kinetic theory used, we introduce a symmetric form of the energy-momentum tensor that is suitable for the description of a weakly nonuniform c…
We derive relativistic hydrodynamics from quantum field theories by assuming that the density operator is given by a local Gibbs distribution at initial time. We decompose the energy-momentum tensor and particle current into nondissipative and dissipative parts, and analyze their time evolution in detail. Performing the path-integral formulation of the local Gibbs distribution, we microscopically derive the generating functional for the nondissipative hydrodynamics. We also construct a basis to study dissipative corrections. In particular, we derive the first-order dissipative hydrodynamic equa…
We construct the theory of dissipative hydrodynamics of uncharged fluids living on embedded space-time surfaces to first order in a derivative expansion in the case of codimension-1 surfaces (including fluid membranes) and the theory of non-dissipative hydrodynamics to second order in a derivative expansion in the case of codimension higher than one under the assumption of no angular momenta in transverse directions to the surface. This construction includes the elastic degrees of freedom, and hence the corresponding transport coefficients, that take into account transverse fluctuations of the…
With the goal of deriving dissipative hydrodynamics from an action, we study classical actions for open systems, which follow from the generic structure of effective actions in the Schwinger-Keldysh Closed-Time-Path formalism with two time axes and a doubling of degrees of freedom. The central structural feature of such effective actions is the coupling between degrees of freedom on the two time axes. This reflects the fact that from an effective field theory point of view, dissipation is the loss of energy of the low-energy hydrodynamical degrees of freedom to the integrated-out, UV degrees o…
Second-order dissipative hydrodynamic equations for each component of a multi-component system are derived using the entropy principle. Comparison of the solutions with kinetic transport results demonstrates validity of the obtained equations. We demonstrate how the shear viscosity of the total system can be calculated in terms of the involved cross sections and partial densities. Presence of the inter-species interactions leads to a characteristic time-dependence of the shear viscosity of the mixture, which also means that the shear viscosity of a mixture cannot be calculated using the Green-…
The shear viscosity coefficient and the corresponding relaxation time for causal dissipative hydrodynamics are calculated based on the microscopic formula proposed in [T. Koide and T. Kodama, Phys. Rev. \textbf{E 78}, 051107 (2008)]. Here, the exact formula is transformed into a more compact form and applied it to evaluate these transport coefficients in the chiral perturbation theory and perturbative QCD. It is shown that in the leading order calculation, the causal shear viscosity coefficient $η$ reduces to that of the ordinary Green-Kubo-Nakano formula, and the relaxation time $τ_π$ is rela…
We outline a universal Schwinger-Keldysh effective theory which describes macroscopic thermal fluctuations of a relativistic field theory. The basic ingredients of our construction are three: a doubling of degrees of freedom, an emergent abelian symmetry associated with entropy, and a topological (BRST) supersymmetry imposing fluctuation-dissipation theorem. We illustrate these ideas for a non-linear viscous fluid, and demonstrate that the resulting effective action obeys a generalized fluctuation-dissipation theorem, which guarantees a local form of the second law.
We use the AdS/CFT correspondence to study first-order relativistic viscous magneto-hydrodynamics of (2+1) dimensional conformal magnetic fluids. It is shown that the first order magneto-hydrodynamics constructed following Landau and Lifshitz from the positivity of the entropy production is inconsistent. We propose additional contributions to the entropy motivated dissipative current and, correspondingly, new dissipative transport coefficients. We use the strongly coupled M2-brane plasma in external magnetic field to show that the new magneto-hydrodynamics leads to self-consistent results in t…
We construct the general hydrodynamic description of (3+1)-dimensional chiral charged (quantum) fluids subject to a strong external magnetic field with effective field theory methods. We determine the constitutive equations for the energy-momentum tensor and the axial charge current, in part from a generating functional. Furthermore, we derive the Kubo formulas which relate two-point functions of the energy-momentum tensor and charge current to 27 transport coefficients: 8 independent thermodynamic, 4 independent non-dissipative hydrodynamic, and 10 independent dissipative hydrodynamic transpo…
The charged-particle's final state spectrum is derived from an analytic perturbative solution for the relativistic viscous hydrodynamics. By taking into account the longitudinal acceleration effect in relativistic viscous hydrodynamics, the pseudorapidity spectrum describes well the nucleus-nucleus colliding systems at RHIC and LHC. Based on both the extracted longitudinal acceleration parameters $λ^{*}$ and a phenomenological description of the $λ^{*}$, the charged-particle's pseudorapidity distributions for $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.44 TeV Xe+Xe collisions are computed from the final state express…
A theory of parity-invariant dissipative fluids with $q$-form symmetry is formulated to first order in a derivative expansion. The fluid is anisotropic with symmetry $\text{SO}(D-1-q)\times\text{SO}(q)$ and carries dissolved $q$-dimensional charged objects that couple to a $(q+1)$-form background gauge field. The case $q=1$ for which the fluid carries string charge is related to magnetohydrodynamics in $D=4$ spacetime dimensions. We identify $q$+7 parity-even independent transport coefficients at first order in derivatives for $q>1$. In particular, compared to the $q=1$ case under the assumpti…
We derive first-order relativistic dissipative hydrodynamic equations (RDHEs) from relativistic Boltzmann equation (RBE) on the basis of the renormalization-group (RG) method. We introduce a macroscopic-frame vector (MFV) to specify the local rest frame (LRF) on which the macroscopic dynamics is described. The five hydrodynamic modes are identified with the same number of the zero modes of the linearized collision operator, i.e., the collision invariants. After defining the inner product in the function space spanned by the distribution function, the higher-order terms, which give rise to the …
We derive generic relativistic hydrodynamical equations with dissipative effects from the underlying Boltzmann equation in a mechanical and systematic way on the basis of so called the renormalization-group (RG) method. A macroscopic frame vector is introduced to specify the frame on which the macroscopic dynamics is described. Our method is so mechanical with only few ansatz that our method give a microscopic foundation of the available hydrodynamical equations, and also can be applied to make a reduction of the kinetic equations other than the simple Boltzmann equation.
We consider the hydrodynamic regime of a 2+1 dimensions QFT with the parity anomaly. Beyond the known constraints from positivity of entropy production, we show that the anomaly inflow mechanism, from a corresponding bulk SPT phase, together with thermodynamic consistency of equilibrium partition functions, restricts the form of non-dissipative transport coefficients. This included the known form of quantised Hall conductivity, which is fixed to be $σ_{xy} = e^2/2h$, along with new constraints on other three non-dissipative parity-odd transport coefficients.
The effective low-energy late-time description of many body systems near thermal equilibrium provided by classical hydrodynamics in terms of dissipative transport phenomena receives important corrections once the effects of stochastic fluctuations are taken into account. One such physical effect is the occurrence of long-time power law tails in correlation functions of conserved currents. In the hydrodynamic regime $\vec{k} \rightarrow 0$ this amounts to non-analytic dependence of the correlation functions on the frequency $ω$. In this article, we consider a relativistic fluid with a conserved…
The first order hydrodynamic evolution equations for the shear stress tensor, the bulk viscous pressure and the charge current have been studied for a system of quarks and gluons, with a non-vanishing quark chemical potential and finite quark mass. The first order transport coefficients have been obtained by solving an effective Boltzmann equation for the grand-canonical ensemble of quasiquarks and quasigluons. We adopted temperature dependent effective fugacity for the quasiparticles to encode the hot QCD medium effects. The non-trivial energy dispersion of the quasiparticles induces mean fie…
We outline a program for obtaining an action principle for dissipative fluid dynamics by considering the holographic Wilsonian renormalization group applied to systems with a gravity dual. As a first step, in this paper we restrict to systems with a non-dissipative horizon. By integrating out gapped degrees of freedom in the bulk gravitational system between an asymptotic boundary and a horizon, we are led to a formulation of hydrodynamics where the dynamical variables are not standard velocity and temperature fields, but the relative embedding of the boundary and horizon hypersurfaces. At zer…
We study the causality and stability of relativistic hydrodynamics with the inclusion of the spin degree of freedom as a hydrodynamic field. We consider two specific models of spin-hydrodynamics for this purpose. A linear mode analysis for static background shows that a first-order dissipative spin-hydrodynamics remains acausal and admits instabilities. Besides, it is found that the inclusion of the spin field in hydrodynamics leads to new kinds of linear modes in the system. These new modes also exhibit instability and acausal behavior. The second model of the spin-hydrodynamics that we have …
We introduce dissipative effects in the effective field theory of hydrodynamics. We do this in a model-independent fashion by coupling the long-distance degrees of freedom explicitly kept in the effective field theory to a generic sector that "lives in the fluid", which corresponds physically to the microscopic constituents of the fluid. At linear order in perturbations, the symmetries, the derivative expansion, and the assumption that this microscopic sector is thermalized, allow us to characterize the leading dissipative effects at low frequencies via three parameters only, which correspond …
We provide a complete derivation of hydrodynamic equations for nonrelativistic systems based on quantum field theories of spinless Schrödeinger fields, assuming that an initial density operator takes a special form of the local Gibbs distribution. The constructed optimized/renormalized perturbation theory for real-time evolution enables us to separately evaluate dissipative and nondissipative parts of constitutive relations. It is shown that the path-integral formula for local thermal equilibrium together with the symmetry properties of the resulting action---the nonrelativistic diffeomorphism…
We study the scrambling of local quantum information in chaotic many-body systems in the presence of a locally conserved quantity like charge or energy that moves diffusively. The interplay between conservation laws and scrambling sheds light on the mechanism by which unitary quantum dynamics, which is reversible, gives rise to diffusive hydrodynamics, which is a dissipative process. We obtain our results in a random quantum circuit model that is constrained to have a conservation law. We find that a generic spreading operator consists of two parts: (i) a conserved part which comprises the wei…
We investigate the entanglement dynamics in a free-fermion chain initially prepared in a Fermi sea and subjected to localized losses (dissipative impurity). We derive a formula describing the dynamics of the entanglement entropies in the hydrodynamic limit of long times and large intervals. The result depends only on the absorption coefficient of the effective delta potential describing the impurity in the hydrodynamic limit. Genuine dissipation-induced entanglement is certified by the linear growth of the logarithmic negativity. Finally, in the quantum Zeno regime at strong dissipation the en…
We derive the leading dissipative corrections of holographic superfluids at finite temperature and chemical potential by employing our recently developed techniques to study dissipative effects in the hydrodynamic limit of holographic theories. As part of our results, we express the incoherent conductivity, the shear and the three bulk viscosities in terms of thermodynamics and the black hole horizon data of the dual bulk geometries. We use our results to show that all three bulk viscosities exhibit singular behaviour close to the critical point.
We provide a complete solution to hydrodynamic transport at all orders in the gradient expansion compatible with the second law constraint. The key new ingredient we introduce is the notion of adiabaticity, which allows us to take hydrodynamics off-shell. Adiabatic fluids are such that off-shell dynamics of the fluid compensates for entropy production. The space of adiabatic fluids is quite rich, and admits a decomposition into seven distinct classes. Together with the dissipative class this establishes the eightfold way of hydrodynamic transport. Furthermore, recent results guarantee that dis…
We present a new approach to describe hydrodynamics carrying non-Abelian macroscopic degrees of freedom. Based on the Kaluza-Klein compactification of a higher-dimensional neutral dissipative fluid on a group manifold, we obtain a d=4 colored dissipative fluid coupled to Yang-Mills gauge field. We calculate the transport coefficients of the new fluid, which show the non-Abelian character of the gauge group. In particular, we obtain group-valued terms in the gradient expansions and response quantities such as the conductivity matrix and the chemical potentials. While using SU(2) for simplicity,…
