We believe that the asymptomatic infectious cohort is an omitted part of the understanding of the epidemic dynamics of disease COVID-19. The goal of this work is to consider widespread use of face masks as a non-pharmaceutical control strategy for the Covid-19 pandemic. A SEIR model that divides the population into individuals that wear masks and those that do not is considered. After calculating the basic reproductive number by a next generation approach, a criterion for determining when an epidemic can be prevented by the use of masks only and the critical percentage of mask users for disease prevention in the population are derived. COVID-19 epidemics in Japan and Tokyo were analyzed by a fundamental equation of the dynamic phase transition. As a result, the epidemic was found to be in good agreement with the random nucleation and linear growth model suggesting that the epidemic between March 13, 2020 and May 22, 2020 was simply rate-limited by the three constant-parameters: the initial susceptible, domain growth rate, and nucleation decay constant. We use a simple SIR-like epidemic model which integrates known age-contact patterns for the United States to model the effect of age-targeted mitigation strategies for a COVID-19-like epidemic. We find that, among strategies which end with population immunity, strict age-targeted mitigation strategies have the potential to greatly reduce mortalities and ICU utilization for natural parameter choices.

A pandemic caused by a new coronavirus has spread worldwide, affecting Argentina. We implement an SEIR model to analyze the disease evolution in Buenos Aires and neighbouring cities. The model parameters are calibrated using the number of casualties officially reported. Since infinite solutions honour the data, we show different cases. In all of them the reproduction ratio $R_0$ decreases after early lockdown, but then raises, probably due to an increase in contagion in highly populated slums.
