We discuss recent progress many problems in random matrix theory of a combinatorial nature, including several breakthroughs that solve long standing famous conjectures.
We introduce a new class of permutations, called web permutations. Using these permutations, we provide a combinatorial interpretation for entries of the transition matrix between the Specht and web bases, which answers Rhoades's question. Furthermore, we study enumerative properties of these permutations.
In this article we obtain a general polynomial identity in $k$ variables, where $k\geq 2$ is an arbitrary positive integer. We use this identity to give a closed-form expression for the entries of the powers of a $k \times k$ matrix. Finally, we use these results to derive various combinatorial identities.
Let $T$ be a tree with a vertex set $\{ 1,2,\dots, N \}$. Denote by $d_{ij}$ the distance between vertices $i$ and $j$. In this paper, we present an explicit combinatorial formula of principal minors of the matrix $(t^{d_{ij}})$, and its applications to tropical geometry, study of multivariate stable polynomials, and representation of valuated matroids. We also give an analogous formula for a skew-symmetric matrix associated with $T$.
As well known, permanent of a square (0,1)-matrix $A$ of order $n$ enumerates the permutations $β$ of $1,2,...,n$ with the incidence matrices $B\leq A.$ To obtain enumerative information on even and odd permutations with condition $B\leq A,$ we should calculate two-fold vector $(a_1,a_2)$ with $a_1+a_2 =per A.$ More general, the introduced $ω$-permanent, where $ω=e^{2πi/m},$ we calculate as $m$-fold vector. For these and other matrix functions we generalize the Laplace theorem of their expansion over elements of the first row, using the defined so-called "combinatorial minors". In particular, …
We use Knuth's combinatorial approach to Pfaffians to reprove and clarify a century-old formula, due to Brill. It expresses arbitrary minors of a skew symmetric matrix in terms of Pfaffians.
I recently came across a combinatorial design problem involving progressive dinner parties (also known as safari suppers). In this note, I provide some elementary methods of designing schedules for these kinds of dinner parties.
The vertex-edge incidence matrix of a (connected) unicyclic graph G is a square matrix which is invertible if and only if the cycle of G is an odd cycle. A combinatorial formula of the inverse of the incidence matrix of an odd unicyclic graph was known. A combinatorial formula of the Moore-Penrose inverse of the incidence matrix of an even unicyclic graph is presented solving an open problem.
We consider the problem of enumeration of planar maps and revisit its one-matrix model solution in the light of recent combinatorial techniques involving conjugated trees. We adapt and generalize these techniques so as to give an alternative and purely combinatorial solution to the problem of counting arbitrary planar maps with prescribed vertex degrees.
We show that the well-known Konig's Min-Max Theorem (KMM), a fundamental result in combinatorial matrix theory, can be proven in the first order theory $\LA$ with induction restricted to $Σ_1^B$ formulas. This is an improvement over the standard textbook proof of KMM which requires $Π_2^B$ induction, and hence does not yield feasible proofs --- while our new approach does. $\LA$ is a weak theory that essentially captures the ring properties of matrices; however, equipped with $Σ_1^B$ induction $\LA$ is capable of proving KMM, and a host of other combinatorial properties such as Menger's, Hall'…
In this paper we provide the group inverse of the combinatorial Laplacian matrix of distance-biregular graphs using the so-called equilibrium measures for sets obtained by deleting a vertex. We also show that the two equilibrium arrays characterizing a distance-biregular graph can be expressed in terms of the mentioned equilibrium measures. As a consequence of the minimum principle, we show a characterization of when the group inverse of the combinatorial Laplacian matrix of a distance-biregular graph is an $M$-matrix.
In this paper we give a novel solution to a classical completion problem for square matrices. This problem was studied by many authors through time, and it is completely solved in [2, 3]. In this paper we relate this classical problem to a purely combinatorial question involving partitions of integers and their majorizations studied in [4]. We show surprising relations in these approaches and as a corollary, we obtain a new combinatorial result on partitions of integers.
It is shown that a random $(0,1)$ matrix whose rows are independent random vectors of exactly $n/2$ zero components is non-singular with probability $1-O(n^{-C})$ for any $C>0$. The proof uses a non-standard inverse-type Littlewood-Offord result.
We establish three identities involving Dyck paths and alternating Motzkin paths, whose proofs are based on variants of the same bijection. We interpret these identities in terms of closed random walks on the halfline. We explain how these identities arise from combinatorial interpretations of certain properties of the $β$-Hermite and $β$-Laguerre ensembles of random matrix theory. We conclude by presenting two other identities obtained in the same way, for which finding combinatorial proofs is an open problem.
The Hirsch conjecture, posed in 1957, stated that the graph of a $d$-dimensional polytope or polyhedron with $n$ facets cannot have diameter greater than $n - d$. The conjecture itself has been disproved, but what we know about the underlying question is quite scarce. Most notably, no polynomial upper bound is known for the diameters that were conjectured to be linear. In contrast, no polyhedron violating the conjecture by more than 25% is known. This paper reviews several recent attempts and progress on the question. Some work in the world of polyhedra or (more often) bounded polytopes, but s…
An equivalence relation in the symmetric group, where is a positive integer has been considered. An algorithm for calculation of the number of the equivalence classes by this relation for arbitrary integer has been described.
A combinatorial rectangle may be viewed as a matrix whose entries are all +-1. The discrepancy of an m by n matrix is the maximum among the absolute values of its m row sums and n column sums. In this paper, we investigate combinatorial rectangles with minimum discrepancy (0 or 1 for each line depending on the parity). Specifically, we get explicit formula for the number of matrices with minimum L^infinity-discrepancy up to 4 rows, and establish the order of magnitude of the number of such matrices with m rows and n columns while m is fixed and n approaches infinity. By considering the number …
Given a matrix with partitions of its rows and columns and entries from a field, we give the necessary and sufficient conditions that it has a non--singular submatrix with certain number of rows from each row partition and certain number of columns from each column partition.
From the matrix point of view, we use the recursion to discuss four combinatorial numbers in terms of the integer lattice paths, this is different from Andrá's method (Andra). We give four tables and matrices, and their relations, and give their matrix decompositions. By their relations, we give the explicit formulas of the special combinatorial numbers.
We study entanglement properties of mixed density matrices obtained from combinatorial Laplacians. This is done by introducing the notion of the density matrix of a graph. We characterize the graphs with pure density matrices and show that the density matrix of a graph can be always written as a uniform mixture of pure density matrices of graphs. We consider the von Neumann entropy of these matrices and we characterize the graphs for which the minimum and maximum values are attained. We then discuss the problem of separability by pointing out that separability of density matrices of graphs doe…
A theorem of Mina evaluates the determinant of a matrix with entries $D^j(f(x)^i)$. We note the important special case where the matrix entries are evaluated at $x=0$ and give a simple proof of it, and some applications. We then give a short proof of the general case.
The spectral $p$-norm of $r$-matrices generalizes the spectral $2$-norm of $2$-matrices. In 1911 Schur gave an upper bound on the spectral $2$-norm of $2$-matrices, which was extended in 1934 by Hardy, Littlewood, and Polya to $r$-matrices. Recently, Kolotilina, and independently the author, strengthened Schur's bound for $2$-matrices. The main result of this paper extends the latter result to $r$-matrices, thereby improving the result of Hardy, Littlewood, and Polya. The proof is based on combinatorial concepts like $r$-partite $r$-matrix and symmetrant of a matrix, which appear to be instrum…
We derive the explicit formula for the inverse of zeta matrix for any graded posets with the finite set of minimal elements . The combinatorial interpretation of this result is given. For that to do special number theoretic code triangles for graded posets are proposed and apart from the present author combinatorial interpretation of $F-nomial$ coefficients another one is proposed referring to the number of all maximal chains in the corresponding poset intervals.
Kirillov-Reshetikhin crystals are colored directed graphs encoding the structure of certain finite-dimensional representations of affine Lie algebras. A tensor products of column shape Kirillov-Reshetikhin crystals has recently been realized in a uniform way, for all untwisted affine types, in terms of the quantum alcove model. We enhance this model by using it to give a uniform realization of the combinatorial $R$-matrix, i.e., the unique affine crystal isomorphism permuting factors in a tensor product of KR crystals. In other words, we are generalizing to all Lie types Schützenberger's slidi…
We study the polytope model for the affine type $A$ Kirillov-Reshetikhin crystals and prove that the action of the affine Kashiwara operators can be described in a remarkable simple way. Moreover, we investigate the combinatorial $R$-matrix on a tensor product of polytopes and characterize the map explicitly on the highest weight elements. We further give a formula for the local energy function and provide an alternative proof for the perfectness. We determine for any dominant highest weight element $Λ$ of level $\ell$ the elements $b_Λ, b^Λ$ involved in the definition of perfect crystals and …
We give a combinatorial interpretation of a matrix identity on Catalan numbers and the sequence $(1, 4, 4^2, 4^3, ...)$ which has been derived by Shapiro, Woan and Getu by using Riordan arrays. By giving a bijection between weighted partial Motzkin paths with an elevation line and weighted free Motzkin paths, we find a matrix identity on the number of weighted Motzkin paths and the sequence $(1, k, k^2, k^3, ...)$ for any $k \geq 2$. By extending this argument to partial Motzkin paths with multiple elevation lines, we give a combinatorial proof of an identity recently obtained by Cameron and N…
We characterize sequences of positive integers (c 1 , c 2 , ..., cn) for which the (2 x 2)-matrix c 1 --1 1 0 $\times$ $\times$ $\times$ cn --1 1 0 belongs to the principal congruence subgroup of level 2 in SL(2, Z). The answer is given in terms of dissections of a convex n-gon into a mixture of triangles and quadrilaterals.
Varchenko defined the Varchenko matrix associated to any real hyperplane arrangement and computed its determinant. In this paper, we show that the Varchenko matrix of a hyperplane arrangement has a diagonal form if and only if it is semigeneral, i.e., without degeneracy. In the case of semigeneral arrangement, we present an explicit computation of the diagonal form via combinatorial arguments and matrix operations, thus giving a combinatorial interpretation of the diagonal entries.
In this paper we use a formula for the $n$-th power of a $2\times2$ matrix $A$ (in terms of the entries in $A$) to derive various combinatorial identities. Three examples of our results follow. 1) We show that if $m$ and $n$ are positive integers and $s \in \{0,1,2,\dots,$ $\lfloor (mn-1)/2 \rfloor \}$, then \begin{multline*} \sum_{i,j,k,t}2^{1+2t-mn+n} \frac{(-1)^{nk+i(n+1)}}{1+δ_{(m-1)/2,\,i+k}} \binom{m-1-i}{i} \binom{m-1-2i}{k}\times\\ \binom{n(m-1-2(i+k))}{2j}\binom{j}{t-n(i+k)} \binom{n-1-s+t}{s-t}\\ =\binom{mn-1-s}{s}. \end{multline*} 2) The generalized Fibonacci polynomial $f_{m}(x,s)$…
In this paper, we consider the problem of computing the entire sequence of the maximum degree of minors of a block-structured symbolic matrix (a generic partitioned polynomial matrix) $A = (A_{αβ} x_{αβ} t^{d_{αβ}})$, where $A_{αβ}$ is a $2 \times 2$ matrix over a field $\mathbf{F}$, $x_{αβ}$ is an indeterminate, and $d_{αβ}$ is an integer for $α= 1,2,\dots, μ$ and $β= 1,2,\dots,ν$, and $t$ is an additional indeterminate. This problem can be viewed as an algebraic generalization of the maximum weight bipartite matching problem. The main result of this paper is a combinatorial $O(μν\min\{μ, ν\}…
We systematize and analyze some results obtained in Subset Combinatorics of $G$ groups after publications the previous surveys [1-4]. The main topics: the dynamical and descriptive characterizations of subsets of a group relatively their combinatorial size, Ramsey-product subsets in connection with some general concept of recurrence in $G$-spaces, new ideals in the Boolean algebra $\mathcal{P}_{G}$ of all subsets of a group $G$ and in the Stone-$\check{C}$ech compactification $βG$ of $G$ , the combinatorial derivation.
We present both a combinatorial characterization and a recurrent formula for the entries of the inverse Kostka matrix. An application to the topology of the classifying space BU(n) is obtained.
This paper considers three separate matrices associated to graphs and (each dimension of) cell complexes. It relates all the coefficients of their respective characteristic polynomials to the geometric and combinatorial enumeration of three kinds of subobjects. The matrices are: the mesh matrix for integral d-cycles of Trent, the mesh matrix for integral d-boundaries, and the Kirchhoff matrix, i.e., the combinatorial Laplacian, for integral (d-1)-chains. Relations to Reidemeister-Franz torsion are elucidated and relations to the foundational work of R. Lyons and G. Kalai.
To a given nonsingular triangular matrix A with entries from a ring, we associate a weighted bipartite graph G(A) and give a combinatorial description of the inverse of A by employing paths in G(A). Under a certain condition, nonsingular triangular matrices A such that A and A^{-1} have the same zero-nonzero pattern are characterized. A combinatorial construction is given to construct outer inverses of the adjacency matrix of a weighted tree.
Entringer numbers occur in the André permutation combinatorial set-up under several forms. This leads to the construction of a matrix-analog refinement of the tangent (resp. secant) numbers. Furthermore, closed expressions for the three-variate exponential generating functions for pairs of so-called Entringerian statistics are derived.
Strongly quadrangular matrices have been introduced in the study of the combinatorial properties of unitary matrices. It is known that if a (0, 1)-matrix supports a unitary then it is strongly quadrangular. However, the converse is not necessarily true. In this paper, we fully classify strongly quadrangular matrices up to degree 5. We prove that the smallest strongly quadrangular matrices which do not support unitaries have exactly degree 5. Further, we isolate two submatrices not allowing a (0, 1)-matrix to support unitaries.
In this paper, we consider the problem of computing the rank of a block-structured symbolic matrix (a generic partitioned matrix) $A = (A_{αβ} x_{αβ})$, where $A_{αβ}$ is a $2 \times 2$ matrix over a field $\mathbf{F}$ and $x_{αβ}$ is an indeterminate for $α= 1,2,\dots, μ$ and $β= 1,2, \dots, ν$. This problem can be viewed as an algebraic generalization of the bipartite matching problem and was considered by Iwata and Murota (1995). Recent interests in this problem lie in the connection with non-commutative Edmonds' problem by Ivanyos, Qiao, and Subrahamanyam (2018) and Garg, Gurvits, Oliveiva…
We present in this paper a comprehensive introduction to the algebraic Bethe Ansatz, taking as examples the six-vertex model with periodic and non-periodic boundary conditions. We propose a diagrammatic representation of the commutation relations used in the algebraic Bethe Ansatz, so that the action of the transfer matrix in the nth excited state gives place to labeled combinatorial trees. The analysis of these combinatorial trees provides in a straightforward way the eigenvalues and eigenstates of the transfer matrix, as well as the respective Bethe Ansatz equations. Several identities betwe…
To study electronic transport through chaotic quantum dots, there are two main theoretical approachs. One involves substituting the quantum system with a random scattering matrix and performing appropriate ensemble averaging. The other treats the transport in the semiclassical approximation and studies correlations among sets of classical trajectories. There are established evaluation procedures within the semiclassical evaluation that, for several linear and non-linear transport moments to which they were applied, have always resulted in the agreement with random matrix predictions. We prove …
Our results can be viewed as applications of algebraic combinatorics in random matrix theory. These applications are motivated by the predictive power of random matrix theory for the statistical behavior of the celebrated Riemann $ζ$-function (and $L$-functions in general), which was discovered by Montgomery (with regard to zeros of $L$-functions) and by Keating and Snaith (with regard to values of $L$-functions). The first results revolve around a new operation on partitions, which we call overlap. We prove two overlap identities for so-called Littlewood-Schur functions. The first overlap ide…
Keller proposed a combinatorial conjecture on construction of an n-by-infinite matrix, which comes from showing the existence of many orbits of different sizes in certain linear group actions. He proved it for the case n=4, and we show that conjecture is true in the general case. We also propose a combinatorial game version of the conjecture which even further generalizes the problem.
Cartan matrices are of fundamental importance in representation theory. For algebras defined by quivers (i.e. directed graphs) with relations the computation of the entries of the Cartan matrix amounts to counting nonzero paths in the quivers, leading naturally to a combinatorial setting. In this paper we study a refined version, so-called q-Cartan matrices, where each nonzero path is weighted by a power of an indeterminant q according to its length. Specializing q=1 gives the classical Cartan matrix. Our main motivation are derived module categories and their invariants: the invariant factors…
Let $Q_{n,d}$ denote the random combinatorial matrix whose rows are independent of one another and such that each row is sampled uniformly at random from the subset of vectors in $\{0,1\}^n$ having precisely $d$ entries equal to $1$. We present a short proof of the fact that $\Pr[\det(Q_{n,d})=0] = O\left(\frac{n^{1/2}\log^{3/2} n}{d}\right)=o(1)$, whenever $d=ω(n^{1/2}\log^{3/2} n)$. In particular, our proof accommodates sparse random combinatorial matrices in the sense that $d = o(n)$ is allowed. We also consider the singularity of deterministic integer matrices $A$ randomly perturbed by a s…
Looking at incidence matrices of $t$-$(v,k,λ)$ designs as $v \times b$ matrices with $2$ possible entries, each of which indicates incidences of a $t$-design, we introduce the notion of a $c$-mosaic of designs, having the same number of points and blocks, as a matrix with $c$ different entries, such that each entry defines incidences of a design. In fact, a $v \times b$ matrix is decomposed in $c$ incidence matrices of designs, each denoted by a different colour, hence this decomposition might be seen as a tiling of a matrix with incidence matrices of designs as well. These mosaics have applic…
We introduce and study several combinatorial properties of a class of symmetric polynomials from the point of view of integrable vertex models in finite lattice. We introduce the $L$-operator related with the $U_q(sl_2)$ $R$-matrix, and construct the wavefunctions and their duals. We prove the exact correspondence between the wavefunctions and symmetric polynomials which is a quantum group deformation of the Grothendieck polynomials. This is proved by combining the matrix product method and an analysis on the domain wall boundary partition functions. As applications of the correspondence betwe…
We give two combinatorial interpretations of the Matrix Ansatz of the PASEP in terms of lattice paths and rook placements. This gives two (mostly) combinatorial proofs of a new enumeration formula for the partition function of the PASEP. Besides other interpretations, this formula gives the generating function for permutations of a given size with respect to the number of ascents and occurrences of the pattern 13-2, the generating function according to weak exceedances and crossings, and the n-th moment of certain q-Laguerre polynomials.
The map which takes a square matrix to its tropical eigenvalue-eigenvector pair is piecewise linear. We determine the cones of linearity of this map. They are simplicial but they do not form a fan. Motivated by statistical ranking, we also study the restriction of that cone decomposition to the subspace of skew-symmetric matrices.
