Looking at incidence matrices of $t$-$(v,k,λ)$ designs as $v \times b$ matrices with $2$ possible entries, each of which indicates incidences of a $t$-design, we introduce the notion of a $c$-mosaic of designs, having the same number of points and blocks, as a matrix with $c$ different entries, such that each entry defines incidences of a design. In fact, a $v \times b$ matrix is decomposed in $c$ incidence matrices of designs, each denoted by a different colour, hence this decomposition might be seen as a tiling of a matrix with incidence matrices of designs as well. These mosaics have applications in experiment design when considering a simultaneous run of several different experiments. We have constructed infinite series of examples of mosaics and state some probably non-trivial open problems. Furthermore we extend our definition to the case of $q$-analogues of designs in a meaningful way.
We study security functions which can serve to establish semantic security for the two central problems of information-theoretic security: the wiretap channel, and privacy amplification for secret key generation. The security functions are functional forms of mosaics of combinatorial designs, more precisely, of group divisible designs and balanced incomplete block designs. Every member of a mosaic is associated with a unique color, and each color corresponds to a unique message or key value. Every block index of the mosaic corresponds to a public seed shared between the two trusted communicati…
We devise a unified framework for the design of canonization algorithms. Using hereditarily finite sets, we define a general notion of combinatorial objects that includes graphs, hypergraphs, relational structures, codes, permutation groups, tree decompositions, and so on. Our approach allows for a systematic transfer of the techniques that have been developed for isomorphism testing to canonization. We use it to design a canonization algorithm for combinatorial objects in general. This result gives new fastest canonization algorithms with an asymptotic running time matching the best known iso…
In this paper we study a certain generalization of combinatorial designs related to almost difference sets, namely the $t$-adesign, which was coined by Cunsheng Ding in 2015. It is clear that $2$-adesigns are a kind of partially balanced incomplete block design which naturally arise in many combinatorial and statistical problems. We discuss some of their basic properties and give several constructions of $2$-adesigns (some of which correspond to new almost difference sets, and others of which correspond to new almost difference families), as well as two constructions of $3$-adesigns. We also d…
Block-transitive Steiner $t$-designs form a central part of the study of highly symmetric combinatorial configurations at the interface of several disciplines, including group theory, geometry, combinatorics, coding and information theory, and cryptography. The main result of the paper settles an important open question: There exist no non-trivial examples with $t=7$ (or larger). The proof is based on the classification of the finite 3-homogeneous permutation groups, itself relying on the finite simple group classification.
Combinatorial $t$-designs have nice applications in coding theory, finite geometries and several engineering areas. There are two major methods of constructing $t$-designs. One of them is via group actions of certain permutation groups which are $t$-transitive or $t$-homogeneous on some point set. The other is a coding-theoretical one. The objectives of this paper are to introduce two constructions of $t$-designs with special polynomials over finite fields GF$(q)$, and obtain $2$-designs and $3$-designs with interesting parameters. A type of d-polynomials is defined and used to construct $2$-d…
The Oberwolfach Problem $OP(F)$ -- posed by Gerhard Ringel in 1967 -- is a paradigmatic Combinatorial Design problem asking whether the complete graph $K_v$ decomposes into edge-disjoint copies of a $2$-regular graph $F$ of order $v$. In this paper, we provide all the necessary equipment to generate solutions to $OP(F)$ for relatively small orders by using the so-called difference methods. From the theoretical standpoint, we present new insights on the combinatorial structures involved in the solution of the problem. Computationally, we provide a full recipe whose base ingredients are advanced…
A combinatorial design is a family of sets that are almost disjoint, which is applied in pseudo random number generations and randomness extractions. The parameter, $ρ$, quantifying the overlap between the sets within the family, is directly related to the length of a random seed needed and the efficiency of an extractor. Nisan and Wigderson proposed an explicit construction of designs in 1994. Later in 2003, Hartman and Raz proved a bound of $ρ\le e^2$ for the Nisan-Wigderson construction in a limited parameter regime. In this work, we prove a tighter bound of $ρ<e$ with the entire parameter …
In this work, we propose an optimization approach for constructing various classes of circulant combinatorial designs that can be defined in terms of autocorrelations. The problem is formulated as a so-called feasibility problem having three sets, to which the Douglas-Rachford projection algorithm is applied. The approach is illustrated on three different classes of circulant combinatorial designs: circulant weighing matrices, D-optimal matrices, and Hadamard matrices with two circulant cores. Furthermore, we explicitly construct two new circulant weighing matrices, a $CW(126,64)$ and a $CW(19…

Combinatorial $t$-designs have been an interesting topic in combinatorics for decades. It was recently reported that the image sets of a fixed size of certain special polynomials may constitute a $t$-design. Till now only a small amount of work on constructing $t$-designs from special polynomials has been done, and it is in general hard to determine their parameters. In this paper, we investigate this idea further by using quadratic functions over finite fields, thereby obtain infinite families of $2$-designs, and explicitly determine their parameters. The obtained designs cover some earlier $…
In 'An asymptotic result on compressed sensing matrices', a new construction for compressed sensing matrices using combinatorial design theory was introduced. In this paper, we use deterministic and probabilistic methods to analyse the performance of matrices obtained from this construction. We provide new theoretical results and detailed simulations. These simulations indicate that the construction is competitive with Gaussian random matrices, and that recovery is tolerant to noise. A new recovery algorithm tailored to the construction is also given.
Deep learning is a machine learning methodology using multi-layer neural network. A multi-layer neural network can be regarded as a chain of complete bipartite graphs. The nodes of the first partita is the input layer and the last is the output layer. The edges of a bipartite graph function as weights which are represented as a matrix. The values of i-th partita are computed by multiplication of the weight matrix and values of (i-1)-th partita. Using mass training and teacher data, the weight parameters are estimated little by little. Overfitting (or Overlearning) refers to a model that models…
This paper presents several new construction techniques for low-density parity-check (LDPC) and systematic repeat-accumulate (RA) codes. Based on specific classes of combinatorial designs, the improved code design focuses on high-rate structured codes with constant column weights 3 and higher. The proposed codes are efficiently encodable and exhibit good structural properties. Experimental results on decoding performance with the sum-product algorithm show that the novel codes offer substantial practical application potential, for instance, in high-speed applications in magnetic recording and …
Anonymous database search protocols allow users to query a database anonymously. This can be achieved by letting the users form a peer-to-peer community and post queries on behalf of each other. In this article we discuss an application of combinatorial configurations (also known as regular and uniform partial linear spaces) to a protocol for anonymous database search, as defining the key-distribution within the user community that implements the protocol. The degree of anonymity that can be provided by the protocol is determined by properties of the neighborhoods and the closed neighborhoods …
Test response compaction for integrated circuits (ICs) with scan-based design-for-testability (DFT) support in the presence of unknown logic values (Xs) is investigated from a combinatorial viewpoint. The theoretical foundations of X-codes, employed in an X-tolerant compaction technique called X-compact, are examined. Through the formulation of a combinatorial model of X-compact, novel design techniques are developed for X-codes to detect a specified maximum number of errors in the presence of a specified maximum number of unknown logic values, while requiring only small fan-out. The special c…
A repairable threshold scheme (which we abbreviate to RTS) is a $(τ,n)$-threshold scheme in which a subset of players can "repair" another player's share in the event that their share has been lost or corrupted. This will take place without the participation of the dealer who set up the scheme. The repairing protocol should not compromise the (unconditional) security of the threshold scheme. Combinatorial repairable threshold schemes (or combinatorial RTS) were recently introduced by Stinson and Wei. In these schemes, "multiple shares" are distributed to each player, as defined by a suitable c…
As a consequence of the classification of the finite simple groups, it has been possible in recent years to characterize Steiner t-designs, that is t-(v,k,1) designs, mainly for t = 2, admitting groups of automorphisms with sufficiently strong symmetry properties. However, despite the finite simple group classification, for Steiner t-designs with t > 2 most of these characterizations have remained longstanding challenging problems. Especially, the determination of all flag-transitive Steiner t-designs with 2 < t < 7 is of particular interest and has been open for about 40 years (cf. [11, p. 14…
We consider the standard broadcast setup with a single server broadcasting information to a number of clients, each of which contains local storage (called \textit{cache}) of some size, which can store some parts of the available files at the server. The centralized coded caching framework, consists of a caching phase and a delivery phase, both of which are carefully designed in order to use the cache and the channel together optimally. In prior literature, various combinatorial structures have been used to construct coded caching schemes. In this work, we propose a binary matrix model to cons…
Compressed sensing is the art of reconstructing structured $n$-dimensional vectors from substantially fewer measurements than naively anticipated. A plethora of analytic reconstruction guarantees support this credo. The strongest among them are based on deep results from large-dimensional probability theory that require a considerable amount of randomness in the measurement design. Here, we demonstrate that derandomization techniques allow for considerably reducing the amount of randomness that is required for such proof strategies. More, precisely we establish uniform s-sparse reconstruction …
