For a graph $G$, let $cp(G)$ denote the minimum number of cliques of $G$ needed to cover the edges of $G$ exactly once. Similarly, let $bp_k(G)$ denote the minimum number of bicliques (i.e. complete bipartite subgraphs of $G$) needed to cover each edge of $G$ exactly $k$ times. We consider two conjectures -- one regarding the maximum possible value of $cp(G) + cp(\overline{G})$ (due to de Caen, Erdős, Pullman and Wormald) and the other regarding $bp_k(K_n)$ (due to de Caen, Gregory and Pritikin). We disprove the first, obtaining improved lower and upper bounds on $\max_G cp(G) + cp(\overline{G})$, and we prove an asymptotic version of the second, showing that $bp_k(K_n) = (1+o(1))n$.
The biclique cover number $(\text{bc})$ of a graph $G$ denotes the minimum number of complete bipartite (biclique) subgraphs to cover all the edges of the graph. In this paper, we show that $\text{bc}(G) \geq \lceil \log_2(\text{mc}(G^c)) \rceil \geq \lceil \log_2(χ(G)) \rceil$ for an arbitrary graph $G$, where $χ(G)$ is the chromatic number of $G$ and $\text{mc}(G^c)$ is the number of maximal cliques of the complementary graph $G^c$, i.e., the number of maximal independent sets of $G$. We also show that $\lceil \log_2(\text{mc}(G^c)) \rceil$ could be a strictly tighter lower bound of the bicl…
A family of sets is $(p,q)$-intersecting if every nonempty subfamily of $p$ or fewer sets has at least $q$ elements in its total intersection. A family of sets has the $(p,q)$-Helly property if every nonempty $(p,q)$-intersecting subfamily has total intersection of cardinality at least $q$. The $(2,1)$-Helly property is the usual Helly property. A hypergraph is $(p,q)$-Helly if its edge family has the $(p,q)$-Helly property and hereditary $(p,q)$-Helly if each of its subhypergraphs has the $(p,q)$-Helly property. A graph is $(p,q)$-clique-Helly if the family of its maximal cliques has the $(p,…
The biclique partition number $(\text{bp})$ of a graph $G$ is referred to as the least number of complete bipartite (biclique) subgraphs that are required to cover the edges of the graph exactly once. In this paper, we show that the biclique partition number ($\text{bp}$) of a co-chordal (complementary graph of chordal) graph $G = (V, E)$ is less than the number of maximal cliques ($\text{mc}$) of its complementary graph: a chordal graph $G^c = (V, E^c)$. We first provide a general framework of the ``divide and conquer" heuristic of finding minimum biclique partitions of co-chordal graphs base…
Consider a graph $G$ with chromatic number $k$ and a collection of complete bipartite graphs, or bicliques, that cover the edges of $G$. We prove the following two results: \medskip \noindent $\bullet$ If the bicliques partition the edges of $G$, then their number is at least $2^{\sqrt{\log_2 k}}$. This is the first improvement of the easy lower bound of $\log_2 k$, while the Alon-Saks-Seymour conjecture states that this can be improved to $k-1$. \medskip \noindent $\bullet$ The sum of the orders of the bicliques is at least $(1-o(1))k\log_2 k$. This generalizes, in asymptotic form, a result o…
We study the polyhedral properties of three problems of constructing an optimal complete bipartite subgraph (a biclique) in a bipartite graph. In the first problem we consider a balanced biclique with the same number of vertices in both parts and arbitrary edge weights. In the other two problems we are dealing with unbalanced subgraphs of maximum and minimum weight with nonnegative edges. All three problems are established to be NP-hard. We study the polytopes and the cone decompositions of these problems and their 1-skeletons. We describe the adjacency criterion in 1-skeleton of the polytope …
We define a new graph operator, called the weak-factor graph, which comes from the context of complex network modelling. The weak-factor operator is close to the well-known clique-graph operator but it rather operates in terms of bicliques in a multipartite graph. We address the problem of the termination of the series of graphs obtained by iteratively applying the weak-factor operator starting from a given input graph. As for the clique-graph operator, it turns out that some graphs give rise to series that do not terminate. Therefore, we design a slight variation of the weak-factor operator, …
In this paper we obtain some upper bounds for $b$-chromatic number of $K_{1,t}$ -free graphs, graphs with given minimum clique partition and bipartite graphs. These bounds are in terms of either clique number or chromatic number of graphs or biclique number for bipartite graphs. We show that all the bounds are tight.
A biclique is a maximal induced complete bipartite subgraph of a graph. We investigate the intersection structure of edge-sets of bicliques in a graph. Specifically, we study the associated edge-biclique hypergraph whose hyperedges are precisely the edge-sets of all bicliques. We characterize graphs whose edge-biclique hypergraph is conformal (i.e., it is the clique hypergraph of its 2-section) by means of a single forbidden induced obstruction, the triangular prism. Using this result, we characterize graphs whose edge-biclique hypergraph is Helly and provide a polynomial time recognition algo…
Bicliques are complements of bipartite graphs; as such each consists of two cliques joined by a number of edges. In this paper we study algebraic aspects of the chromatic polynomials of these graphs. We derive a formula for the chromatic polynomial of an arbitrary biclique, and use this to give certain conditions under which two of the graphs have chromatic polynomials with the same splitting field. Finally, we use a subfamily of bicliques to prove the cubic case of the $α+n$ conjecture, by showing that for any cubic integer $α$, there is a natural number $n$ such that $α+n$ is a chromatic roo…
An ordered biclique partition of the complete graph $K_n$ on $n$ vertices is a collection of bicliques (i.e., complete bipartite graphs) such that (i) every edge of $K_n$ is covered by at least one and at most two bicliques in the collection, and (ii) if an edge $e$ is covered by two bicliques then each endpoint of $e$ is in the first class in one of these bicliques and in the second class in other one. In this note, we give an explicit construction of such a collection of size $n^{1/2+o(1)}$, which improves the $O(n^{2/3})$ bound shown in the previous work [Disc. Appl. Math., 2014]. As the im…
A 1978 theorem of Kozen states that two graphs on $n$ vertices are isomorphic if and only if there is a clique of size $n$ in the weak modular product between the two graphs. Restricting to bipartite graphs and considering complete bipartite subgraphs (bicliques) therein, we study the combinatorics of the weak modular product. We identify cases where isomorphism is tractable using this approach, which we call Isomorphism via Biclique Enumeration (IvBE). We find that IvBE is polynomial for bipartite $2K_2$-free graphs and quasi-polynomial for families of bipartite graphs, where the largest indu…
Inspired by a question of Yannakakis on the Vertex Packing polytope of perfect graphs, we study the Clique-Stable Set Separation in a non-hereditary subclass of perfect graphs. A cut (B,W) of G (a bipartition of V(G)) separates a clique K and a stable set S if $K\subseteq B$ and $S\subseteq W$. A Clique-Stable Set Separator is a family of cuts such that for every clique K, and for every stable set S disjoint from K, there exists a cut in the family that separates K and S. Given a class of graphs, the question is to know whether every graph of the class admits a Clique-Stable Set Separator cont…
The edge-bandwidth of a graph is the minimum, over all labelings of the edges with distinct integers, of the maximum difference between labels of two incident edges. We prove that edge-bandwidth is at least as large as bandwidth for every graph, with equality for certain caterpillars. We obtain sharp or nearly-sharp bounds on the change in edge-bandwidth under addition, subdivision, or contraction of edges. We compute edge-bandwidth for cliques, bicliques, caterpillars, and some theta graphs.
A graph $G$ is $F$-saturated if it does not contain any copy of $F$, but the addition of any missing edge in $G$ creates at least one copy of $F$. Inspired by work of Alon and Shikhelman regarding a similar question for $F$-free graphs, Kritschgau, Methuku, Tait, and Timmons introduced the parameter of $\text{sat}_H(n,F)$ to denote the minimum number of copies of some subgraph $H$ in an $F$-saturated graph on $n$ vertices. In this paper, we address this generalized saturation problem with special focus on $\text{sat}_{K_r}(n,S_t)$ and $\text{sat}_{S_r}(n,S_t)$ This relates to recent work by Ch…
Given a graph $G$, the strong clique number of $G$, denoted $ω_S(G)$, is the maximum size of a set $S$ of edges such that every pair of edges in $S$ has distance at most $2$ in the line graph of $G$. As a relaxation of the renowned Erdős--Nešetřil conjecture regarding the strong chromatic index, Faudree et al. suggested investigating the strong clique number, and conjectured a quadratic upper bound in terms of the maximum degree. Recently, Cames van Batenburg, Kang, and Pirot conjectured a linear upper bound in terms of the maximum degree for graphs without even cycles. Namely, if $G$ is a $C_…
A $0,1$ matrix is said to be regular if all of its rows and columns have the same number of ones. We prove that for infinitely many integers $k$, there exists a square regular $0,1$ matrix with binary rank $k$, such that the Boolean rank of its complement is $k^{\widetildeΩ(\log k)}$. Equivalently, the ones in the matrix can be partitioned into $k$ combinatorial rectangles, whereas the number of rectangles needed for any cover of its zeros is $k^{\widetildeΩ(\log k)}$. This settles, in a strong form, a question of Pullman (Linear Algebra Appl., 1988) and a conjecture of Hefner, Henson, Lundgre…
The positive zero forcing number of a graph is a graph parameter that arises from a non-traditional type of graph colouring, and is related to a more conventional version of zero forcing. We establish a relation between the zero forcing and the fast-mixed searching, which implies some NP-completeness results for the zero forcing problem. For chordal graphs much is understood regarding the relationships between positive zero forcing and clique coverings. Building upon constructions associated with optimal tree covers and forest covers, we present a linear time algorithm for computing the positi…
We investigate edge-intersection graphs of paths in the plane grid, regarding a parameter called the bend-number. I.e., every vertex is represented by a grid path and two vertices are adjacent if and only if the two grid paths share at least one grid-edge. The bend-number is the minimum $k$ such that grid-paths with at most $k$ bends each suffice to represent a given graph. This parameter is related to the interval-number and the track-number of a graph. We show that for every $k$ there is a graph with bend-number $k$. Moreover we provide new upper and lower bounds of the bend-number of graphs…
