The cotangent complex of a map of commutative rings is a central object in deformation theory. Since the 1990s, it has been generalized to the homotopical setting of $E_\infty$-ring spectra in various ways.
In this work we first establish, in the context of $\infty$-categories and using Goodwillie's calculus of functors, that various definitions of the cotangent complex of a map of $E_\infty$-ring spectra that exist in the literature are equivalent. We then turn our attention to a specific example. Let $R$ be an $E_\infty$-ring spectrum and $\mathrm{Pic}(R)$ denote its Picard $E_\infty$-group. Let $Mf$ denote the Thom $E_\infty$-$R$-algebra of a map of $E_\infty$-groups $f:G\to \mathrm{Pic}(R)$; examples of $Mf$ are given by various flavors of cobordism spectra. We prove that the cotangent complex of $R\to Mf$ is equivalent to the smash product of $Mf$ and the connective spectrum associated to $G$.
We analyze the functorial and multiplicative properties of the Thom spectrum functor in the setting of symmetric spectra, and we establish the relevant homotopy invariance.
We apply an announced result of Blumberg-Cohen-Schlichtkrull to reprove (under restricted hypotheses) a theorem of Mahowald: the connective real and complex K-theory spectra are not Thom spectra.
We extend the theory of Thom spectra and the associated obstruction theory for orientations in order to support the construction of the string orientation of tmf, the spectrum of topological modular forms. We also develop the analogous theory of Thom spectra and orientations for associative ring spectra. Our work is based on a new model of the Thom spectrum as a derived smash product. An earlier version of this paper was part of arXiv:0810.4535.
One constructs minimal injective resolutions for certain unstable modules that appears to be the mod 2 cohomology of Thom spectra. The terms of the resolution are tensor products of Brown-Gitler modules and Steinberg modules introduced by S. Mitchell and S. Priddy. A combinatorial result of Andrews shows that the alternating sum of the Poincare series of the considered modules is zero. One gives homotopical applications of this result.
We introduce a convenient framework for constructing and analyzing orthogonal Thom spectra arising from virtual vector bundles. This framework enables us to set up a theory of orientations and graded Thom isomorphisms with good multiplicative properties. The theory is applied to the analysis of logarithmic structures on commutative ring spectra.
Many interesting spectra can be constructed as Thom spectra of easily constructed bundles. Mahowald showed that $\mathit{bu}$ and $\mathit{bo}$ cannot be realized as $E_1$ Thom spectra. We use related techniques to show that $\mathit{tmf}_{(2)}$ also cannot be realized as an $E_1$ Thom spectrum.
We show that a large number of Thom spectra, i.e. colimits of morphisms $BG\to BGL_1(\mathbb{S})$, can be obtained as iterated Thom spectra, i.e. colimits of morphisms $BG\to BGL_1(Mf)$ for some Thom spectrum $Mf$. This leads to a number of new relative Thom isomorphisms, e.g. $MU[6,\infty)\wedge_{MString} MU[6,\infty)\simeq MU[6,\infty)\wedge\mathbb{S}[B^3Spin]$. As an example of interest to chromatic homotopy theorists, we also show that Ravenel's $X(n)$ filtration of $MU$ is a tower of intermediate Thom spectra determined by a natural filtration of $BU$ by sub-bialagebras.
In this paper we analyze the higher topological Hochschild homology of commutative Thom S-algebras. This includes the case of the classical cobordism spectra MO, MSO, MU, etc. We consider the homotopy orbits of the torus action on iterated topological Hochschild homology and we describe the relationship to topological Andre-Quillen homology.
We develop a theory of R-module Thom spectra for a commutative symmetric ring spectrum R and we analyze their multiplicative properties. As an interesting source of examples, we show that R-algebra Thom spectra associated to the special unitary groups can be described in terms of quotient constructions on R. We apply the general theory to obtain a description of the R-based topological Hochschild homology associated to an R-algebra Thom spectrum.
We describe the topological Hochschild homology of ring spectra that arise as Thom spectra for loop maps f: X->BF, where BF denotes the classifying space for stable spherical fibrations. To do this, we consider symmetric monoidal models of the category of spaces over BF and corresponding strong symmetric monoidal Thom spectrum functors. Our main result identifies the topological Hochschild homology as the Thom spectrum of a certain stable bundle over the free loop space L(BX). This leads to explicit calculations of the topological Hochschild homology for a large class of ring spectra, includin…
We give a description of the factorization homology and $E_n$ topological Hochschild cohomology of Thom spectra arising from $n$-fold loop maps $f: A \to BO$, where $A = Ω^n X$ is an $n$-fold loop space. We describe the factorization homology $\int_M Th(f)$ as the Thom spectrum associated to a certain map $\int _M A \to BO$. When $M$ is framed and $X$ is $(n-1)$-connected, this spectrum is equivalent to a Thom spectrum of a virtual bundle over the mapping space $Map_c(M,X)$; in general, this is a Thom spectrum of a virtual bundle over a certain section space. This can be viewed as a twisted fo…
We review and extend the theory of Thom spectra and the associated obstruction theory for orientations. We recall (from May, Quinn, and Ray) that a commutative ring spectrum A has a spectrum of units gl(A). To a map of spectra f: b -> bgl(A), we associate a commutative A-algebra Thom spectrum Mf, which admits a commutative A-algebra map to R if and only if b -> bgl(A) -> bgl(R) is null. If A is an associative ring spectrum, then to a map of spaces f: B -> BGL(A) we associate an A-module Thom spectrum Mf, which admits an R-orientation if and only if B -> BGL(A) -> BGL(R) is null. We also note t…
We prove that the $G$-equivariant mod $p$ Eilenberg--MacLane spectrum arises as an equivariant Thom spectrum for any finite, $p$-power cyclic group $G$, generalizing a result of Behrens and the second author in the case of the group $C_2$. We also establish a construction of $\mathrm{H}\underline{\mathbb{Z}}_{(p)}$, and prove intermediate results that may be of independent interest. Highlights include constraints on the Hurewicz images of equivariant spectra that admit norms, and an analysis of the extent to which the non-equivariant $\mathrm{H}\mathbb{F}_p$ arises as the Thom spectrum of a mo…
We introduce a general theory of parametrized objects in the setting of infinity categories. Although spaces and spectra parametrized over spaces are the most familiar examples, we establish our theory in the generality of objects of a presentable infinity category parametrized over objects of an infinity topos. We obtain a coherent functor formalism describing the relationship of the various adjoint functors associated to base-change and symmetric monoidal structures. Our main applications are to the study of generalized Thom spectra. We obtain fiberwise constructions of twisted Umkehr maps f…
We develop a generalization of the theory of Thom spectra using the language of infinity categories. This treatment exposes the conceptual underpinnings of the Thom spectrum functor: we use a new model of parametrized spectra, and our definition is motivated by the geometric definition of Thom spectra of May-Sigurdsson. For an associative ring spectrum $R$, we associate a Thom spectrum to a map of infinity categories from the infinity groupoid of a space $X$ to the infinity category of free rank one $R$-modules, which we show is a model for $BGL_1 R$; we show that $BGL_1 R$ classifies homotopy…
We identify the topological Hochschild homology (THH) of the Thom spectrum associated to an E_\infty classifying map X -> BG, for G an appropriate group or monoid (e.g. U, O, and F). We deduce the comparison from the observation of McClure, Schwanzl, and Vogt that THH of a cofibrant commutative S-algebra (E_\infty ring spectrum) R can be described as an indexed colimit together with a verification that the Lewis-May operadic Thom spectrum functor preserves indexed colimits. We prove a splitting result THH(Mf) \htp Mf \sma BX_+ which yields a convenient description of THH(MU). This splitting ho…
This paper lays some of the foundations for working with not-necessarily-commutative bialgebras and their categories of comodules in $\infty$-categories. We prove that the categories of comodules and modules over a bialgebra always admit suitably structured monoidal structures in which the tensor product is taken in the ambient category (as opposed to a relative (co)tensor product over the underlying algebra or coalgebra of the bialgebra). We give two examples of higher coalgebraic structure: first, following Hess we show that for a map of $\mathbb{E}_n$-ring spectra $ϕ\colon A\to B$, the asso…
In this article we develop the cotangent complex and (co)homology theories for spectral categories. Along the way, we reproduce standard model structures on spectral categories. As applications, we show that the invariants to descend to stable $\infty$-categories and we prove a stabilization result for spectral categories.
Hopkins and Mahowald gave a simple description of the mod $p$ Eilenberg Mac Lane spectrum $\mathbb{F}_p$ as the free $\mathbb{E}_2$-algebra with an equivalence of $p$ and $0$. We show for each faithful $2$-dimensional representation $λ$ of a $p$-group $G$ that the $G$-equivariant Eilenberg Mac Lane spectrum $\underline{\mathbb{F}}_p$ is the free $\mathbb{E}_λ$-algebra with an equivalence of $p$ and $0$. This unifies and simplifies recent work of Behrens, Hahn, and Wilson, and extends it to include the dihedral $2$-subgroups of O(2). The main new idea is that $\underline{\mathbb{F}}_p$ has a si…
This note provides a reference for some properties of the Thom spectrum $Mξ$ over $ΩΣ\CPi$. Some of this material is used in recent work of Kitchloo and Morava. We determine the $Mξ$-cohomology of $\CPi$ and show that $Mξ^*(\CPi)$ injects into power series over the algebra of non-symmetric functions. We show that $Mξ$ gives rise to a commutative formal group law over the non-commutative ring $π_*Mξ$. We also discuss how $Mξ$ and some real and quaternionic analogues behave with respect to spectra that are related to these Thom spectra by splittings and by maps.
We describe an iterable construction of THH for an E_n ring spectrum. The reduced version is an iterable bar construction and its n-th iterate gives a model for the shifted cotangent complex at the augmentation, representing reduced topological Quillen homology of an augmented E_n algebra.
We define quasicategories of E_n-structured coalgebras, bialagebras and comodules. We show that: n-fold loop spaces, suspension spectra thereof, descent data for maps of E_n-ring spectra, descent corings of morphisms of E_n-ring spectra and Thom spectra are all examples of these kinds of objects. In particular, we prove that for a morphism of E_n-monoidal Kan complexes f:X->BGL_1(R), the associated Thom spectrum Mf is a structured R[X]-comodule by the classical Thom diagonal.
Let $G$ be a reductive affine algebraic group defined over a field $k$ of characteristic zero. In this paper, we study the cotangent complex of the derived $G$-representation scheme $ {\rm DRep}_G(X)$ of a pointed connected topological space $X$. We use an (algebraic version of) unstable Adams spectral sequence relating the cotangent homology of $ {\rm DRep}_G(X) $ to the representation homology $ {\rm HR}_*(X,G) := π_*{\mathcal O}[{\rm DRep}_G(X)] $ to prove some vanishing theorems for groups and geometrically interesting spaces. Our examples include virtually free groups, Riemann surfaces, l…
Let $f:G\to \mathrm{Pic}(R)$ be a map of $E_\infty$-groups, where $\mathrm{Pic}(R)$ denotes the Picard space of an $E_\infty$-ring spectrum $R$. We determine the tensor $X\otimes_R Mf$ of the Thom $E_\infty$-$R$-algebra $Mf$ with a space $X$; when $X$ is the circle, the tensor with $X$ is topological Hochschild homology over $R$. We use the theory of localizations of $\infty$-categories as a technical tool: we contribute to this theory an $\infty$-categorical analogue of Day's reflection theorem about closed symmetric monoidal structures on localizations, and we prove that for a smashing local…
We import into homotopy theory the algebro-geometric construction of the cotangent space of a geometric point on a scheme. Specializing to the category of spectra local to a Morava $K$-theory of height $d$, we show that this can be used to produce a choice-free model of the determinantal sphere as well as an efficient Picard-graded cellular decomposition of $K(\mathbb Z_p, d+1)$. Coupling these ideas to work of Westerland, we give a "Snaith's theorem" for the Iwasawa extension of the $K(d)$-local sphere.
Let $R$ be an $E_\infty$-ring spectrum. Given a map $ζ$ from a space $X$ to $BGL_1R$, one can construct a Thom spectrum, $X^ζ$, which generalises the classical notion of Thom spectrum for spherical fibrations in the case $R=S^0$, the sphere spectrum. If $X$ is a loop space ($\simeq ΩY$) and $ζ$ is homotopy equivalent to $Ωf$ for a map $f$ from $Y$ to $B^2GL_1R$, then the Thom spectrum has an $A_\infty$-ring structure. The Topological Hochschild Homology of these $A_\infty$-ring spectra is equivalent to the Thom spectrum of a map out of the free loop space of $Y$. This paper considers the case …
The $2$-primary Hopf invariant $1$ elements in the stable homotopy groups of spheres form the most accessible family of elements. In this paper we explore some properties of the $\mathcal{E}_\infty$ ring spectra obtained from certain iterated mapping cones by applying the free algebra functor. In fact, these are equivalent to Thom spectra over infinite loop spaces related to the classifying spaces $B\mathrm{SO},\,B\mathrm{Spin},\,B\mathrm{String}$. We show that the homology of these Thom spectra are all extended comodule algebras of the form $\mathcal{A}_*\square_{\mathcal{A}(r)_*}P_*$ over th…
The notion of highly structured ring spectra of prime characteristic is made precise and is studied via the versal examples S//p for prime numbers p. These can be realized as Thom spectra, and therefore relate to other Thom spectra such as the unoriented bordism spectrum MO. We compute the Hochschild and André-Quillen invariants of the S//p. Among other applications, we show that S//p is not a commutative algebra over the Eilenberg-Mac Lane spectrum HF_p, although the converse is clearly true, and that MO is not a polynomial algebra over S//2.
This article is a survey of algebra in the $\infty$-categorical context, as developed by Lurie in "Higher Algebra", and is a chapter in the "Handbook of Homotopy Theory". We begin by introducing symmetric monoidal stable $\infty$-categories, such as the derived $\infty$-category of a commutative ring, before turning to our main example, the $\infty$-category of spectra. We then go on to consider ring spectra and their $\infty$-categories of modules, as well as basic constructions such as localization, completion, and dualizability. We conclude with a brief account of the cotangent complex and …
In this paper, we import the theory of "Calabi-Yau" algebras and categories from symplectic topology and topological field theories to the setting of spectra in stable homotopy theory. Twistings in this theory will be particularly important. There will be two types of Calabi-Yau structures in the setting of ring spectra: one that applies to compact algebras and one that applies to smooth algebras. The main application of twisted compact Calabi-Yau ring spectra that we will study is to describe, prove, and explain a certain duality phenomenon in string topology. This is a duality between the ma…
We prove that any closed connected exact Lagrangian manifold L in a connected cotangent bundle T*N is up to a finite covering space lift a homology equivalence. We prove this by constructing a fibrant parametrized family of ring spectra FL parametrized by the manifold N. The homology of FL will be (twisted) symplectic cohomology of T*L. The fibrancy property will imply that there is a Serre spectral sequence converging to the homology of FL and the product combined with intersection product on N induces a product on this spectral sequence. This product structure and its relation to the interse…
