We prove that the moduli spaces of curves of genus 22 and 23 are of general type. To do this, we calculate certain virtual divisor classes of small slope associated to linear series of rank 6 with quadric relations. We then develop new tropical methods for studying linear series and independence of quadrics and show that these virtual classes are represented by effective divisors.
We study smoothing of pencils of curves on surfaces with normal crossings. As a consequence we show that the canonical divisor of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g,n}$ is not pseudo-effective in some range, implying that $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{12,6},\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{12,7},\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{13,4}$ and $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{14,3}$ are uniruled. We provide upper bounds for the Kodaira dimension of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{12,8}$ and $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{16}$. We also show that the moduli of $(4g+5)$-pointed hyperelliptic curves $\mathcal{H}_{g,4g+5}$ is uniruled. Together with a re…
It is known that the moduli space $\overline{\mathcal{H}}_{g,n}$ of genus $g$ stable hyperelliptic curves with $n$ marked points is uniruled for $n \leq 4g+5$. In this paper we consider the complementary case. We calculate the canonical divisor of $\overline{\mathcal{H}}_{g,n}$ and show that it is effective for $n=4g+6$ and big for $n\leq 4g+7$. This leads us to conjecture that $\overline{\mathcal{H}}_{g,n}$ has non-negative Kodaira dimension for $n = 4g+6$ and is of general type for $n \geq 4g+7$.
A pair $(S,C)$ is called a singular $\mathbb{Q}$-homology plane pair if $S$ is a singular projective surface with only quotient singularities having the same rational homology as $\mathbb{p}^2$ and $C \subset S$ has the same rational homology as $\mathbb{p}^1$. We will prove results concerning smooth rational curves on $S$ and the singularities of $S$ such that $\overline κ(S^0)=1$ and $\overline κ(S-C) \neq -\infty$. We end with an example of such pairs.
We show that for a surjective, separable morphism f of smooth projective varieties over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic such that $f_* \mathcal{O}_X = \mathcal{O}_Y$ subadditivity of Kodaira dimension holds, provided the base is of general type and the Hasse-Witt matrix of the geometric general fiber is not nilpotent.
We give a corrected statement of the theorem of Gurjar and Miyanishi, which classifies smooth affine surfaces of Kodaira dimension zero, whose coordinate ring is factorial and has trivial units. Denote the class of such surfaces by $\mathcal{S}_{0}$. An infinite series of surfaces in $\mathcal{S}_{0}$, not listed by Gurjar and Miyanishi, was recently obtained by Freudenburg, Kojima and Nagamine as affine modifications of the plane. We complete their list to a series containing arbitrarily high-dimensional families of pairwise non-isomorphic surfaces in $\mathcal{S}_{0}$. Moreover, we classify …
We construct a basis of the space ${\text S}_{14}({\text{Sp}}_{12}({\mathbb Z}))$ of Siegel cusp forms of degree $6$ and weight $14$ consisting of harmonic theta series. One of these functions has vanishing order $2$ at the boundary which implies that the Kodaira dimension of $\mathcal{A}_6$ is non-negative.
We investigate the vanishing of $H^1(X,\mathcal{O}_X(-D))$ for a big and nef $\mathbb{Q}$-Cartier $\mathbb{Z}$-divisor $D$ on a log del Pezzo surface $(X,Δ)$ over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic $p$.
We obtain a combinatorial proof that the number of points of the space $\overline{{\mathcal M}_{0,n}}({\mathbb F}_q)$ satisfies the recurrent formula for Poincare polynomials of the space $\overline{{\mathcal M}_{0,n}}({\mathbb C})$.
We show that the compactification of the moduli space of $n-$nodal curves of genus g, i.e. $\mathcal{N}_{g,n}:= \mathcal{M}_{g,2n} /G$, with $G:=(\mathbb{Z}_2)^n \rtimes S_n$, is of general type for $g \geq 24$, for all $n \in \mathbb{N}$. While this is a fairly easy result, it requires completely different techniques to extend it to low genus $5 \leq g \leq 23$. Here we need that the number of nodes varies in a band $n_{\mathrm{min}}(g) \leq n \leq n_{\mathrm{max}}(g)$, where $n_{\mathrm{max}}(g)$ is the largest integer smaller than (or in some cases equal to) $\frac{7}{2}(g-1)-3$. The lower …
The moduli space $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0,n}$ carries a codimension-$d$ cycle class $κ_{d}$. We consider the subspace $\mathcal{K}^{d}_{n}$ of $A^d(\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0,n},\mathbb{Q})$ spanned by pullbacks of $κ_d$ via forgetful maps. We find a permutation basis for $\mathcal{K}^{d}_{n}$, and describe its annihilator under the intersection pairing in terms of $d$-dimensional boundary strata. As an application, we give a new permutation basis of the divisor class group of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0,n}$.
We prove that the moduli space $\overline{\mathcal{R}}_{15}$ of Prym curves of genus $15$ is of general type. To this end we exhibit a virtual divisor $\overline{\mathcal{D}}_{15}$ on $\overline{\mathcal{R}}_{15}$ as the degeneracy locus of a globalized multiplication map of sections of line bundles. We then proceed to show that this locus is indeed of codimension one and calculate its class. Using this class, we can conclude that $K_{\overline{\mathcal{R}}_{15}}$ is big. This complements a 2010 result of Farkas and Ludwig: now the spaces $\overline{\mathcal{R}}_g$ are known to be of general t…
We prove that the moduli space of double covers ramified at two points $\mathcal{R}_{g,2}$ is uniruled for $3\leq g\leq 6$ and of general type for $g\geq 16$. Furthermore, we consider Prym-canonical divisorial strata in the moduli space $\overline{\mathcal{C}^n\mathcal{R}}_g$ parametrizing $n$-pointed Prym curves, and we compute their classes in $\mathrm{Pic}_\mathbb{Q}(\overline{\mathcal{C}^n\mathcal{R}}_g)$.
We compute the class of the effective divisors on $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g,n}$, which are set theoretically equal to the locus of moduli points $[C,p_1,\dots ,p_n]$ where $C$ lies on a quadric under the map given by the linear series $|K_C-p_1-\dots -p_n|$. Using this divisor class we show that the moduli spaces $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{16,8}$ and $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{17,8}$ are of general type. We also note that the divisor classes computed in the papers \cite{FV1} and \cite{FV2} can be used to show that $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{12,10}$ is of general type as well.
We show $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{10,10}$ and $\mathcal{F}_{11,9}$ have Kodaira dimension zero. Our method relies on the construction of a number of curves via nodal Lefschetz pencils on blown-up $K3$ surfaces. The construction further yields that any effective divisor in $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g}$ with slope $<6+(12-δ)/(g+1)$ must contain the locus of curves that are the normalization of a $δ$-nodal curve lying on a $K3$ surface of genus $g+δ$.
We review and develop some techniques used to investigate the effective cones of higher codimension classes. Our results show that a large collection of boundary strata of rational tails type are extremal in their effective cones on $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g,n}$ and provide evidence for the conjecture that all boundary strata of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g,n}$ are extremal. As a corollary, we show that all boundary strata are extremal in genus zero.
We exhibit infinitely many extremal effective codimension-$k$ cycles in $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g,n}$ in the cases $g\geq 3, n\geq g-1$ and $k=2$, $g\geq 2$, $k\leq n-g,g,$ and $g=1$, $k\leq n-2$. Hence in these cases the effective cone is not rational polyhedral.
In this work, we introduce the moduli stack $\widetilde{\mathcal{M}}_{g,n}^r$ of $n$-pointed, $A_r$-stable curves of genus $g$ and use it to compute the Chow ring of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_3$. As a byproduct, we also compute the Chow ring of $\widetilde{\mathcal{M}}_3^7$. All the Chow rings are assumed to be with coefficients in $\mathbb{Z}[1/6]$.
This paper is the fourth in a series of four papers aiming to describe the (almost integral) Chow ring of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_3$, the moduli stack of stable curves of genus $3$. In this paper, we finally compute the Chow ring of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_3$ with $\mathbb{Z}[1/6]$-coefficients.
We show that certain quotients of the compactified moduli space of $n-$ pointed genus $g$ curves, $\overline{\mathcal{M}}^G:= \overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g,n} / G$, are of general type, for a fairly broad class of subgroups $G$ of the symmetric group $S_n$ which act by permuting the $n$ marked points. The values of $(g,n)$ which we specify in our theorems are near optimal in the sense that, at least in he cases that G is the full symmetric group $S_n$ or a product $S_{n_1}\times \ldots \times S_{n_m}$, there is a relatively narrow transitional zone in which $\overline{\mathcal{M}}^G$ changes its b…
We discuss criteria for a stable map of genus two and degree $4$ to the projective plane to be smoothable, as an application of our modular desingularisation of $\overline{\mathcal M}_{2,n}(\mathbb{P}^r,d)^{\text{main}}$ via logarithmic geometry and Gorenstein singularities.
For $i\geq2$, we compute the first coefficients of the class $[\overline{D}(μ;3)]$ in the rational Picard group of the moduli of Prym curves $\overline{\mathcal{R}}_{2i}$, where $D(μ;3)$ is the divisor parametrizing pairs $[C,η]$ for which there exists a degree $2i$ map $π\colon C\rightarrow \mathbb{P}^1$ having ramification profile $(2,\ldots,2)$ above two points $q_1, q_2$, a triple ramification somewhere else and satisfying $\mathcal{O}_C(\frac{π^{*}(q_1)-π^{*}(q_2)}{2})\cong η$. Furthermore, we provide several new Prym enumerative results related to this situation.
We determine five extremal effective rays of the four-dimensional cone of effective surfaces on the toroidal compactification $\overline{\mathcal A}_3$ of the moduli space ${\mathcal A}_3$ of complex principally polarized abelian threefolds, and we conjecture that the cone of effective surfaces is generated by these surfaces. As the surfaces we define can be defined in any genus $g\ge 3$, we further conjecture that they generate the cone of effective surfaces on the perfect cone toroidal compactification of ${\mathcal A}_g$ for any $g\ge 3$.
We compute the class which is Poincare dual to the first Stiefel-Whitney class for the Deligne-Mumford compactification of the moduli space of real algebraic curves of genus 0 with n marked and numbered points in terms of the natural cell decomposition of the variety under consideration.
For a curve $C$ of genus $6$ or $8$ and a torsion bundle $η$ of order $\ell$ we study the vanishing of the space of global sections of the twist $E_C \otimes η$ of the rank two Mukai bundle $E_C$ of $C$. The bundle $E_C$ was used in a well-known construction of Mukai which exhibits general canonical curves of low genus as sections of Grassmannians in the Plücker embedding. Globalizing the vanishing condition, we obtain divisors on the moduli spaces $\overline{\mathcal{R}}_{6,\ell}$ and $\overline{\mathcal{R}}_{8,\ell}$ of pairs $[C, η]$. First we characterize these divisors by different condit…
We show that certain divisors of Brill-Noether and Gieseker-Petri type span extremal rays of the effective cone in the moduli space of stable genus one curves with $n$ ordered marked points. In particular, they are different from the infinitely many extremal rays found in \cite{ChenCoskun}.
In this paper, we prove that for a fibration $f:X\to Z$ from a smooth projective 3-fold to a smooth projective curve, over an algebraically closed field $k$ with $\mathrm{char} k =p >5$, if the geometric generic fiber $X_{\overlineη}$ is smooth, then subadditivity of Kodaira dimensions holds, i.e. $$κ(X)\geκ(X_{\overlineη})+κ(Z).$$
We solve the problem of the computation of the orbifold Euler characteristics of $\Mbar_{g,n}$. We take the works of Harer-Zagier \cite{hz} and Bini-Harer \cite{bh} as our starting point, and apply the formalisms developed in \cite{wz} and \cite{zhou1} to this problem. These formalisms are typical examples of mathematical methods inspired by quantum field theories. We also present many closed formulas and some numerical data. In genus zero the results are related to Ramanujan polynomials, and in higher genera we get recursion relations almost identical to the recursion relations for Ramanujan …
Let $g$ and $n$ be nonnegative integers and $\mathcal A=(a_0,\dots,a_n)$ a sequence of $n+1$ integers summing up to $d$. Let $\overline{\mathcal M}_{g,n+1}$ be the moduli space of $(n+1)$-pointed stable curves of genus $g$ and $\overline{\mathcal J}_{μ,g}\rightarrow \overline{\mathcal M}_{g,1}$ be the Esteves' universal Jacobian, where $μ$ is a universal genus-$g$ polarization of degree $d$. We give an explicit resolution of the universal Abel map $α_{\mathcal A,μ}\colon \overline{\mathcal M}_{g,n+1}\dashrightarrow \overline{\mathcal J}_{μ,g}$, taking a pointed curve $(X,p_0,\dots,p_n)$ to $\m…
We provide a graph formula which describes an arbitrary monomial in ω classes (also referred to as stable ψ classes) in terms of a simple family of dual graphs (pinwheel graphs) with edges decorated by rational functions in ψ classes. We deduce some numerical consequences and in particular a combinatorial formula expressing top intersections of \k{appa} classes on Mg in terms of top intersections of ψ classes.
We show that certain geometrically defined higher codimension cycles are extremal in the effective cone of the moduli space $\overline{\mathcal M}_{g,n}$ of stable genus $g$ curves with $n$ ordered marked points. In particular, we prove that codimension two boundary strata are extremal and exhibit extremal boundary strata of higher codimension. We also show that the locus of hyperelliptic curves with a marked Weierstrass point in $\overline{\mathcal M}_{3,1}$ and the locus of hyperelliptic curves in $\overline{\mathcal M}_4$ are extremal cycles. In addition, we exhibit infinitely many extremal…
K-theoretic Gromov-Witten invariants of a compact Kahler manifold $X$ are defined as super-dimensions of sheaf cohomology of interesting bundles over moduli spaces of n-pointed holomorphic curves in X. With this article, we begin a series of publications on K-theoretic Gromov-Witten invariants, cognizant of the $S_n$-module structure on the sheaf cohomology, induced by renumbering of the marked points. In the opening paper, we introduce such invariants, explain how the representation-theoretic information with varying $S_n$ is incorporated into generating functions of Gromov-Witten theory, and…
In a recent paper Chiodo and Farkas described the singular locus and the locus of non-canonical singularities of the moduli space of level curves. In this work we generalize their results to the moduli space $\overline{\mathcal R}_{g,G}$ of curves with a $G$-cover for any finite group $G$. We show that non-canonical singularities are of two types: $T$-curves, that is singularities lifted from the moduli space $\overline{\mathcal M}_g$ of stable curves, and $J$-curves, that is new singularities entirely characterized by the dual graph of the cover. Finally, we prove that in the case $G=S_3$, th…
For each $n\ge5$, we give an $S_n$-equivariant basis for $H_4(\overline{\mathcal{M}_{0,n}},\mathbb{Q})$, as well as for $H_{2(n-5)}(\overline{\mathcal{M}_{0,n}},\mathbb{Q})$. Such a basis exists for $H_2(\overline{\mathcal{M}_{0,n}},\mathbb{Q})$ and for $H_{2(n-4)}(\overline{\mathcal{M}_{0,n}},\mathbb{Q})$, but it is not known whether one exists for $H_{2k}(\overline{\mathcal{M}_{0,n}},\mathbb{Q})$ when $3\le k\le n-6$.
Given a generic Looijenga pair $(Y,D)$ together with a toric model $ρ:(Y,D)\rightarrow(\overline{Y},\overline{D})$, one can construct a seed ${\bf s}$ such that the corresponding $\mathcal{X}$-cluster variety $\mathcal{X}_{\bf s}$ can be viewed as the universal family of the log Calabi-Yau surface $U=Y\setminus D$. In cases where $(Y,D)$ is positive and $\mathcal{X}_{\bf s}$ is not acyclic, we describe the action of the Weyl group of $(Y,D)$ on the scattering diagram $\mathfrak{D}_{\bf s}$. Moreover, we show that there is a Weyl group element ${\bf w}$ of order $2$ that either agrees with or a…
We give an explicit description of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{1,2}$ as a weighted blow-up of a weighted projective stack. We use this description to compute the Brauer group of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{1,2;S}$ over any base scheme $S$ where 6 is invertible, and the integral Chow rings of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{1,2}$ and $\mathcal{M}_{1,2}$.
For $n\geq 3$, let $\mathcal{M}_{0,n}$ denote the moduli space of genus 0 curves with $n$ marked points, and $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0,n}$ its smooth compactification. A theorem due to Ginzburg, Kapranov and Getzler states that the inverse of the exponential generating series for the Poincaré polynomial of $H^{\bullet}(\mathcal{M}_{0,n})$ is given by the corresponding series for $H^{\bullet}(\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0,n})$. In this paper, we prove that the inverse of the ordinary generating series for the Poincaré polynomial of $H^{\bullet}(\mathcal{M}_{0,n})$ is given by the corresponding ser…
Motivated by work of Zhang from the early `90s, Medvedev and Scanlon formulated the following conjecture. Let $K$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $0$ and let $X$ be a quasiprojective variety defined over $K$ endowed with a dominant rational self-map $Φ$. Then there exists a point $α\in X(K)$ with Zariski dense orbit under $Φ$ if and only if $Φ$ preserves no nontrivial rational fibration, i.e., there exists no non-constant rational function $f\in K(X)$ such that $Φ^*(f)=f$. The Medvedev-Scanlon conjecture holds when $K$ is uncountable. The case where $K$ is countable (e.g., $…
In this paper we prove that the anti-canonical bundle of a holomorphic foliation $\mathcal{F}$ on a complex projective manifold cannot be nef and big if either $\mathcal{F}$ is regular, or $\mathcal{F}$ has a compact leaf. Then we address codimension one regular foliations whose anti-canonical bundle is nef with maximal Kodaira dimension.
Let $π_1:\mathcal{X} \to Δ$ be a flat family of smooth, projective curves of genus $g \ge 2$, degenerating to an irreducible nodal curve $X_0$ with exactly one node. Fix an invertible sheaf $\mathcal{L}$ on $\mathcal{X}$ of relative odd degree. Let $π_2:\mathcal{G}(2,\mathcal{L}) \to Δ$ be the relative Gieseker moduli space of rank $2$ semi-stable vector bundles with determinant $\mathcal{L}$ over $\mathcal{X}$. Since $π_2$ is smooth over $Δ^*$, there exists a canonical family $\widetildeρ_i:\mathbf{J}^i_{\mathcal{G}(2, \mathcal{L})_{Δ^*}} \to Δ^{*}$ of $i$-th intermediate Jacobians i.e., for …
Let $S$ be a regular surface endowed with a very ample line bundle $\mathcal O_S(h_S)$. Taking inspiration from a very recent result by D. Faenzi on $K3$ surfaces, we prove that if $\mathcal O_S(h_S)$ satisfies a short list of technical conditions, then such a polarized surface supports special Ulrich bundles of rank $2$. As applications, we deal with general embeddings of regular surfaces, pluricanonically embedded regular surfaces and some properly elliptic surfaces of low degree in $\mathbb P^N$. Finally, we also discuss about the size of the families of Ulrich bundles on $S$ and we inspect…
Assuming Lang's conjecture, we prove that for a fixed prime $p$, number field $K$, and positive integer $g$, there is an integer $r$ such that no principally polarized abelian variety $A/K$ of dimension $g$ has full level $p^r$ structure. To this end, we use a result of Zuo to prove that for each closed subvariety $X$ in the moduli space $\mathcal{A}_g$ of principally polarized abelian varieties of dimension $g$, there exists a level $m_X$ such that the irreducible components of the preimage of $X$ in $\mathcal{A}_g^{[m]}$ are of general type for $m > m_X$.
We show that the pseudoeffective cone of divisors $\overline{\text{Eff}}^1(\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g,n})$ for $g\geq 2$ and $n\geq 2$ is not polyhedral by showing that the class of the fibre of the morphism forgetting one point forms an extremal ray of the dual nef cone of curves $\overline{\text{Nef}}_1(\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g,n})$ and the cone at this ray is not polyhedral.
We study birational projective models of ${\mathcal M}_{2,2}$ obtained from the moduli space of curves with nonspecial divisors. We describe geometrically which singular curves appear in these models and show that one of them is obtained by blowing down the Weierstrass divisor in the moduli stack of ${\mathcal Z}$-stable curves $\overline{\mathcal M}_{2,2}({\mathcal Z})$ defined by Smyth. As a corollary, we prove projectivity of the coarse moduli space $\overline{M}_{2,2}({\mathcal Z})$.
Let $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g,A[n]}$ be the Hassett moduli stack of weighted stable curves, and let $\overline{M}_{g,A[n]}$ be its coarse moduli space. These are compactifications of $\mathcal{M}_{g,n}$ and $M_{g,n}$ respectively, obtained by assigning rational weights $A = (a_{1},...,a_{n})$, $0< a_{i} \leq 1$ to the markings; they are defined over $\mathbb{Z}$, and therefore over any field. We study the first order infinitesimal deformations of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g,A[n]}$ and $\overline{M}_{g,A[n]}$. In particular, we show that $\overline{M}_{0,A[n]}$ is rigid over any field, if $g\ge…
