We give a corrected statement of the theorem of Gurjar and Miyanishi, which classifies smooth affine surfaces of Kodaira dimension zero, whose coordinate ring is factorial and has trivial units. Denote the class of such surfaces by $\mathcal{S}_{0}$. An infinite series of surfaces in $\mathcal{S}_{0}$, not listed by Gurjar and Miyanishi, was recently obtained by Freudenburg, Kojima and Nagamine as affine modifications of the plane. We complete their list to a series containing arbitrarily high-dimensional families of pairwise non-isomorphic surfaces in $\mathcal{S}_{0}$. Moreover, we classify them up to a diffeomorphism, showing that each occurs as an interior of a 4-manifold whose boundary is an exceptional surgery on a 2-bridge knot. In particular, we show that $\mathcal{S}_{0}$ contains countably many pairwise non-homeomorphic surfaces.
This paper considers the family $\mathscr{S}_0$ of smooth affine factorial surfaces of logarithmic Kodaira dimension 0 with trivial units over an algebraically closed field $k$. Our main result (Theorem 4.1) is that the number of isomorphism classes represented in $\mathscr{S}_0$ is at least countably infinite. This contradicts the earlier classification of Gurjar and Miyanishi [5] which asserted that $\mathscr{S}_0$ has at most two elements up to isomorphism when $k=\mathbb{C}$. Thus, the classification of surfaces in $\mathscr{S}_0$ for the field $\mathbb{C}$, long thought to have been settl…
The affine cancellation problem, which asks whether complex affine varieties with isomorphic cylinders are themselves isomorphic, has a positive solution for two dimensional varieties whose coordinate rings are unique factorization domains, in particular for the affine plane, but counterexamples are found within normal surfaces Danielewski surfaces and factorial threefolds of logarithmic Kodaira dimension equal to 1. The latter are therefore remote from the affine three-space, the first unknown case where the base of one cylinder is an affine space. Locally trivial Ga-actions play a significan…
Trinomial varieties are affine varieties given by some special system of equations consisting of polynomials with three terms. Such varieties are total coordinate spaces of normal rational varieties with torus action of complexity one. For an affine variety X we consider the subgroup SAut(X) of the automorphism group generated by all algebraic subgroups isomorphic to the additive group of the ground field. An affine variety X is rigid if SAut(X) is trivial. In opposite an affine variety is flexible if SAut(X) acts transitively on the regular locus. Arzhantsev proved a criterium for a factorial…
We prove that every compact Kähler threefold $X$ of Kodaira dimension $κ= 0$ or $1$ has a $\mathbf{Q}$-factorial bimeromorphic model $X'$ with at worst terminal singularities such that for each curve $C \subset X'$, the pair $(X',C)$ admits a locally trivial algebraic approximation such that the restriction of the deformation of $X'$ to some neighborhood of $C$ is a trivial deformation. As an application, we prove that every compact Kähler threefold with $κ= 0$ or $1$ has an algebraic approximation.
Suppose that A and B are symplectomorphic smooth affine varieties. If A is acylic of dimension 2 then B has the same log Kodaira dimension as A. If the dimension of A is 3, has log Kodaira dimension 2 and satisfies some other conditions then B cannot be of log general type. We also show that if A and B are symplectomorphic affine varieties of any dimension then any compactification of A by a projective variety is uniruled if and only if any such compactification of B is uniruled.
We reduce Iitaka's subadditivity conjecture for the logarithmic Kodaira dimension to a special case of the generalized abundance conjecture by establishing an Iitaka type inequality for Nakayama's numerical Kodaira dimension. Our proof heavily depends on Nakayama's theory of $ω$-sheaves and $\widehatω$-sheaves. As an application, we prove the subadditivity of the logarithmic Kodaira dimension for affine varieties by using the minimal model program for projective klt pairs with big boundary divisor.
A classical result of Miyanishi-Sugie and Keel-McKernan asserts that for smooth affine surfaces, affine-uniruledness is equivalent to affine-ruledness, both properties being in fact equivalent to the negativity of the logarithmic Kodaira dimension. Here we show in contrast that starting from dimension three, there exists smooth affine varieties which are affine-uniruled but not affine-ruled.
An affine algebraic variety $X$ is rigid if the algebra of regular functions ${\mathbb K}[X]$ admits no nonzero locally nilpotent derivation. We prove that a factorial trinomial hypersurface is rigid if and only if every exponent in the trinomial is at least 2.
This note is a supplement to the papers: R. V. Gurjar, K. Masuda, M. Miyanishi and P. Russell, Affine lines on affine surfaces and the Makar-Limanov invariant, preprint, 2005, 42p. and T. Kishimoto and H. Kojima, Affine lines on {\bf Q}-homology planes with logarithmic Kodaira dimension $-\infty$, Transform. Groups 11 (2006), no. 4 (to appear). We show the role of group actions in classification of affine lines on {\bf Q}-homology planes.
We study simply-laced simple affine Lie algebra bundles over complex surfaces X. Given any Kodaira curve C in X, we construct such a bundle over X. After deformations, it becomes trivial on every irreducible component of C provided that p_g(X)=0. When X is a blowup of P^2 at nine points, there is a canonical E_8-bundle E over X. We show that the geometry of X can be reflected by the deformability of E.
The automorphism groups of certain factorial complex affine threefolds admitting locally trivial actions of the additive group are determined. As a consequence new counterexamples to a generalized cancellation problem are obtained.
We consider algebraic manifolds $Y$ of dimension 3 over $\Bbb{C}$ with $H^i(Y, Ω^j_Y)=0$ for all $j\geq 0$ and $i>0$. Let $X$ be a smooth completion of $Y$ with $D=X-Y$, an effective divisor on $X$ with normal crossings. If the $D$-dimension of $X$ is not zero, then $Y$ is a fibre space over a smooth affine curve $C$ (i.e., we have a surjective morphism from $Y$ to $C$ such that general fibre is smooth and irreducible) such that every fibre satisfies the same vanishing condition. If an irreducible smooth fibre is not affine, then the Kodaira dimension of $X$ is $-\infty$ and the $D$-dimension …
The exceptional configuration of the minimal resolution $\hat{S}_G $ of a Kleinian quotient surface $S_G (:= \CZ^2/G)$ is depicted by a $A$-$D$-$E$ Coxeter-Dynkin diagram. In this article, we show that branching indices of the affine $A$-$D$-$E$ diagram is geometrically characterized by a certain special function $F$ of $S_G$ as the multiplicities of its divisor components in $\hat{S}_G$, a version parallel to the elliptic fibration near certain types of simple singular fibers in Kodaira's elliptic surface theory. We further obtain the uniqueness property of the function $F$ (modular local uni…
The main result is that a quasi-projective surface has negative log Kodaira dimension (i.e. no log pluricanonical sections) iff it is dominated by images of the affine line. This follows from our main intermediate result, that the smooth locus of a log Fano surface is rationally connected. We also give a classification of all but a bounded family of rank one log del Pezzo surfaces.
A Q-homology plane is a normal complex algebraic surface having trivial rational homology. We obtain a structure theorem for Q-homology planes with smooth locus of non-general type. We show that if a Q-homology plane contains a non-quotient singularity then it is a quotient of an affine cone over a projective curve by an action of a finite group respecting the set of lines through the vertex. In particular, it is contractible, has negative Kodaira dimension and only one singular point. We describe minimal normal completions of such planes.
A Q-homology plane is a normal complex algebraic surface having trivial rational homology. We classify singular Q-homology planes which are C^1- or C*-ruled. We analyze their completions, the number of different rulings, the number of affine lines on it and we give constructions. Together with previously known results this completes the classification of Q-homology planes with smooth locus of non-general type. We show also that the dimension of a family of homeomorphic but non-isomorphic singular Q-homology planes having the same weighted boundary, singularities and Kodaira dimension can be ar…
We analyze the structure of the algebraic manifolds $Y$ of dimension 3 with $H^i(Y, Ω^j_Y)=0$ for all $j\geq 0$, $i>0$ and $h^0(Y, {\mathcal{O}}_Y) > 1$, by showing the deformation invariant of some open surfaces. Secondly, we show when a smooth threefold with nonconstant regular functions satisfies the vanishing Hodge cohomology. As an application, we prove the existence of nonaffine and nonproduct threefolds $Y$ with this property by constructing a family of a certain type of open surfaces parametrized by the affine curve $\C-\{0\}$ such that the corresponding smooth completion $X$ has Kodai…
