We study the action of the automorphism group of the $2$ complex dimensional manifold symmetrized bidisc $\mathbb{G}$ on itself. The automorphism group is 3 real dimensional. It foliates $\mathbb{G}$ into leaves all of which are 3 real dimensional hypersurfaces except one, viz., the royal variety. This leads us to investigate Isaev's classification of all Kobayashi-hyperbolic 2 complex dimensional manifolds for which the group of holomorphic automorphisms has real dimension 3 studied by Isaev. Indeed, we produce a biholomorphism between the symmetrized bidisc and the domain
\[\{(z_1,z_2)\in \mathbb{C} ^2 : 1+|z_1|^2-|z_2|^2>|1+ z_1 ^2 -z_2 ^2|, Im(z_1 (1+\overline{z_2}))>0\}\]
in Isaev's list. Isaev calls it $\mathcal D_1$. The road to the biholomorphism is paved with various geometric insights about $\mathbb{G}$.
Several consequences of the biholomorphism follow including two new characterizations of the symmetrized bidisc and several new characterizations of $\mathcal D_1$. Among the results on $\mathcal D_1$, of particular interest is the fact that $\mathcal D_1$ is a "symmetrization". When we symmetrize (appropriately defined in the context in the last section) either $Ω_1$ or $\mathcal{D}^{(2)}_1$ (Isaev's notation), we get $\mathcal D_1$. These two domains $Ω_1$ and $\mathcal{D}^{(2)}_1$ are in Isaev's list and he mentioned that these are biholomorphic to $\mathbb{D} \times \mathbb{D}$. We produce explicit biholomorphisms between these domains and $\mathbb{D} \times \mathbb{D}$.
We show that the symmetrized bidisc may be exhausted by strongly linearly convex domains. It shows in particular the existence of a strongly linearly convex domain that cannot be exhausted by domains biholomorphic to convex ones.
We characterize the group $\operatorname{Aut}(\mathbb G_2)$ for the symmetrized bidisc $\mathbb G_2:=\{(λ_1+λ_2,λ_1λ_2):|λ_1|,|λ_2|<1\}\sub set\mathbb C^2$.
The symmetrized bidisc ${\textbf{G}}_{2}$ is defined by $${\textbf{G}}_{2}:=\{(z_1+z_2,z_1z_2)\in\mathbb{C}^2: |z_1|<1,|z_2|<1,\; z_1,z_2\in\mathbb{C}\}.$$ It is a bounded inhomogeneous pseudoconvex domain without $\mathcal{C}^1$ boundary, and especially the symmetrized bidisc hasn't any strongly pseudoconvex boundary point and the boundary behavior of both Carathéodory and Kobayashi metrics over the symmetrized bidisc is hard to describe precisely. In this paper, we study the boundary Schwarz lemma for holomorphic self-mappings of the symmetrized bidisc ${\textbf{G}}_2$, and our boundary Schw…
We prove a realization formula and a model formula for analytic functions with modulus bounded by $1$ on the symmetrized bidisc \[ G\stackrel{\rm def}{=} \{(z+w,zw): |z|<1, \, |w| < 1\}. \] As an application we prove a Pick-type theorem giving a criterion for the existence of such a function satisfying a finite set of interpolation conditions.
The symmetrized bidisc \[ G \stackrel{\rm{def}}{=}\{(z+w,zw):|z|<1,\ |w|<1\} \] has interesting geometric properties. While it has a plentiful supply of complex geodesics and of automorphisms, there is nevertheless a unique complex geodesic $\mathcal{R}$ in $G$ that is invariant under all automorphisms of $G$. Moreover, $G$ is foliated by those complex geodesics that meet $\mathcal{R}$ in one point and have nontrivial stabilizer. We prove that these properties, together with two further geometric hypotheses on the action of the automorphism group of $G$, characterize the symmetrized bidisc in …
We show how realization theory can be used to find the solutions of the Carathéodory extremal problem on the symmetrized bidisc \[ G \stackrel{\rm{def}}{=} \{(z+w,zw):|z|<1, \, |w|<1\}. \] We show that, generically, solutions are unique up to composition with automorphisms of the disc. We also obtain formulae for large classes of extremal functions for the Carathéodory problems for tangents of non-generic types.
On the symmetrized bidisc G2 with the Bergman metric, the holomorphic sectional curvature is negatively pinched and the holomorphic bisectional curvature is not. The consequences in invariant metrics are provided.
In the paper we discuss the problem of uniqueness of left inverses (solutions of two point Nevanlinna-Pick problem) in bounded convex domains, strongly linearly convex domains, the symmetrized bidisc and the tetrablock.
The main goal of the paper is to study $m$-extremal mappings in the symmetrized bidisc showing that they are rational and $\GG_2$-inner which, in particular, answers a question posed in \cite{Agl-Lyk-You 2013}.
We survey the Carathéodory extremal problem $\mathrm{Car} δ$ on the symmetrized bidisc $$ G = \{(z+w,zw):|z|<1, \, |w|<1\} = \{(s,p)\in \mathbb{C}^2: |s-\bar s p| < 1-|p|^2\}. $$ We also give some new results on this topic. We are particularly interested in cases of this problem in which the solution of the problem is not unique. It is known that, for any $δ=(λ,v)\in TG$ with $v\neq 0$, there is at least one $ω\in\mathbb{T}$ such that $Φ_ω$ solves $\mathrm{Car} δ$, where $Φ_ω(s,p) = \frac{2ωp-s}{2-ωs}$. Moreover, there is an essentially unique solution of $\mathrm{Car} δ$ if and only if $δ$ ha…
A set $V$ in a domain $U$ in $\mathbb{C}^n$ has the {\em norm-preserving extension property} if every bounded holomorphic function on $V$ has a holomorphic extension to $U$ with the same supremum norm. We prove that an algebraic subset of the {\em symmetrized bidisc} \[ G := \{(z+w,zw):|z|<1, |w| < 1 \} \] has the norm-preserving extension property if and only if it is either a singleton, $G$ itself, a complex geodesic of $G$, or the union of the set $\{(2z,z^2): |z|<1\}$ and a complex geodesic of degree $1$ in $G$. We also prove that the complex geodesics in $G$ coincide with the nontrivial h…
The symmetrized bidisc \[ G \stackrel{\rm{def}}{=}\{(z+w,zw):|z|<1,\ |w|<1\}, \] under the Carathéodory metric, is a complex Finsler space of cohomogeneity $1$ in which the geodesics, both real and complex, enjoy a rich geometry. As a Finsler manifold, $G$ does not admit a natural notion of angle, but we nevertheless show that there {\em is} a notion of orthogonality. The complex tangent bundle $TG$ splits naturally into the direct sum of two line bundles, which we call the {\em sharp} and {\em flat} bundles, and which are geometrically defined and therefore covariant under automorphisms of $G…
In this paper we characterize the unit disc, the bidisc and the symmetrized bidisc \[ G =\{(z+w,zw):|z|<1,\ |w|<1\} \] in terms of the possession of small classes of analytic maps into the unit disc that suffice to solve all Carathéodory extremal problems in the domain.
We show that the symmetrized bidisc is a $\Bbb C$-convex domain. This provides an example of a bounded $\Bbb C$-convex domain which cannot be exhausted by domains biholomorphic to convex domains.
We describe all proper holomorphic mappings of the symmetrized polydisc and study its geometric properties. We also apply the obtained results to the study of the spectral unit ball in $\MM_n(\CC^n)$.
We make some sharp estimates to obtain a Schwarz lemma for the \textit{symmetrized polydisc} $\mathbb G_n$, a family of domains naturally associated with the spectral interpolation, defined by \[ \mathbb G_n :=\left\{ \left(\sum_{1\leq i\leq n} z_i,\sum_{1\leq i<j\leq n}z_iz_j \dots, \prod_{i=1}^n z_i \right): \,|z_i|<1, i=1,\dots,n \right \}. \] We first make a few estimates for the \textit{the extended symmetrized polydisc} $\widetilde{\mathbb G}_n$, a family of domains introduced in \cite{pal-roy 4} and defined in the following way: \begin{align*} \widetilde{\mathbb G}_n := \Bigg\{ (y_1,\do…
The pentablock is a Hartogs domain over the symmetrized bidisc. The domain is a bounded inhomogeneous pseudoconvex domain, and does not have a $\mathcal{C}^{1}$ boundary. Recently, Agler-Lykova-Young constructed a special subgroup of the group of holomorphic automorphisms of the pentablock, and Kosiński completely described the group of holomorphic automorphisms of the pentablock. The purpose of this paper is to prove that any proper holomorphic self-mapping of the pentablock must be an automorphism.
We show that every distinguished variety in the symmetrized tridisc $\mathbb G_3$ is one-dimensional and can be represented as \begin{equation}\label{eqn:1} Λ=\{ (s_1,s_2,p)\in \mathbb G_3 \,:\, (s_1,s_2) \in σ_T(F_1^*+pF_2\,,\, F_2^*+pF_1) \}, \end{equation} where $F_1,F_2$ are commuting square matrices of the same order satisfying $[F_1^*,F_1]=[F_2^*,F_2]$ and a norm condition. The converse also holds, i.e, a set of the form (\ref{eqn:1}) is always a distinguished variety in $\mathbb G_3$. We show that for a triple of commuting operators $Σ= (S_1,S_2,P)$ having $Γ_3$ as a spectral set, there…
We analyse the 3-extremal holomorphic maps from the unit disc $\mathbb{D}$ to the symmetrised bidisc $ \mathcal{G}$, defined to be the set $ \{(z+w,zw): z,w\in\mathbb{D}\}$, with a view to the complex geometry and function theory of $\mathcal{G}$. These are the maps whose restriction to any triple of distinct points in $\mathbb{D}$ yields interpolation data that are only just solvable. We find a large class of such maps; they are rational of degree at most 4. It is shown that there are two qualitatively different classes of rational $\mathcal{G}$-inner functions of degree at most 4, to be call…
We make sharp estimates to obtain a Schwarz type lemma for the symmetrized polydisc $\gn$ and for the extended symmetrized polydisc $\Gn$. We explicitly construct an interpolating function under certain condition. To do so, we followed the methods described in \cite{Young-LMS}. Also we find a few geometric interplay between the members of the family $\Gn$ and its closure $\widetildeΓ_n$.
A distinguished algebraic variety in $\mathbb{C}^2$ has been the focus of much research in recent years because of good reasons. This note gives a different perspective. (1) We find a new characterization of an algebraic variety $\mathcal W$ which is distinguished with respect to the bidisc. It is in terms of the joint spectrum of a pair of commuting linear matrix pencils. (2) There is a characterization known of $\mathbb{D}^2\cap\mathcal{W}$ due to a seminal work of Agler and McCarthy. We show that Agler--McCarthy characterization can be obtained from the new one and vice versa. (3) En route,…
We produce a Schwarz lemma for the symmetrized tridisc \[ \mathbb G_3 =\{ (z_1+z_2+z_3,z_1z_2+z_2z_3+z_3z_1,z_1z_2z_3): \,|z_i|< 1, i=1,2,3 \}. \] We show that an interpolating function related to the Schward lemma for $\mathbb G_3$ is not unique and present an explicit description of all such interpolating functions. We also study the complex geometry of $\mathbb G_3$ and present a variety of new characterizations for the open and closed symmetrized tridisc.
In this paper we prove a Schwarz lemma for the pentablock. The set \[ \mathcal{P}=\{(a_{21}, \text{tr} \ A, \det A) : A=[a_{ij}]_{i,j=1}^2 \in \mathbb{B}^{2\times 2}\} \] where $\mathbb{B}^{2\times 2}$ denotes the open unit ball in the space of $2\times 2$ complex matrices, is called the pentablock. The pentablock is a bounded nonconvex domain in $\Bbb{C}^3$ which arises naturally in connection with a certain problem of $μ$-synthesis. We develop a concrete structure theory for the rational maps from the unit disc $\Bbb{D}$ to the closed pentablock $\overline{\mathcal{P}}$ that map the unit cir…
