Supersymmetric D-branes supported on the complex two-dimensional base $S$ of the local Calabi-Yau threefold $K_S$ are described by semi-stable coherent sheaves on $S$. Under suitable conditions, the BPS indices counting these objects (known as generalized Donaldson-Thomas invariants) coincide with the Vafa-Witten invariants of $S$ (which encode the Betti numbers of the moduli space of semi-stable sheaves). For surfaces which admit a strong collection of exceptional sheaves, we develop a general method for computing these invariants by exploiting the isomorphism between the derived category of coherent sheaves and the derived category of representations of a suitable quiver with potential $(Q,W)$ constructed from the exceptional collection. We spell out the dictionary between the Chern class $γ$ and polarization $J$ on $S$ vs. the dimension vector $\vec N$ and stability parameters $\vecζ$ on the quiver side. For all examples that we consider, which include all del Pezzo and Hirzebruch surfaces, we find that the BPS indices $Ω_\star(γ)$ at the attractor point (or self-stability condition) vanish, except for dimension vectors corresponding to simple representations and pure D0-branes. This opens up the possibility to compute the BPS indices in any chamber using either the flow tree or the Coulomb branch formula. In all cases we find precise agreement with independent computations of Vafa-Witten invariants based on wall-crossing and blow-up formulae. This agreement suggests that i) generating functions of DT invariants for a large class of quivers coming from strong exceptional collections are mock modular functions of higher depth and ii) non-trivial single-centered black holes and scaling solutions do not exist quantum mechanically in such local Calabi-Yau geometries.
This article provides a summary of arXiv:1701.08899 and arXiv:1701.08902 where the authors studied the enumerative geometry of nested Hilbert schemes of points and curves on algebraic surfaces and their connections to threefold theories, and in particular relevant Donaldson-Thomas, Vafa-Witten and Seiberg-Witten theories.
On a polarised surface, solutions of the Vafa-Witten equations correspond to certain polystable Higgs pairs. When stability and semistability coincide, the moduli space admits a symmetric obstruction theory and a $\mathbb C^*$ action with compact fixed locus. Applying virtual localisation we define invariants constant under deformations. When the vanishing theorem of Vafa-Witten holds, the result is the (signed) Euler characteristic of the moduli space of instantons. In general there are other, rational, contributions. Calculations of these on surfaces with positive canonical bundle recover th…
We propose a definition of Vafa-Witten invariants counting semistable Higgs pairs on a polarised surface. We use virtual localisation applied to Mochizuki/Joyce-Song pairs. For $K_S\le0$ we expect our definition coincides with an alternative definition using weighted Euler characteristics. We prove this for deg $K_S<0$ here, and it is proved for $S$ a K3 surface in \cite{MT}. For K3 surfaces we calculate the invariants in terms of modular forms which generalise and prove conjectures of Vafa and Witten.
As an analogy to Gopakumar-Vafa conjecture on Calabi-Yau 3-folds, Klemm-Pandharipande defined Gopakumar-Vafa type invariants of a Calabi-Yau 4-fold $X$ using Gromov-Witten theory. When $X$ is holomorphic symplectic, Gromov-Witten invariants vanish and one can consider the corresponding reduced theory. In a companion work, we propose a definition of Gopakumar-Vafa type invariants for such a reduced theory. In this paper, we give them a sheaf theoretic interpretation via moduli spaces of stable pairs.
Vafa-Witten (VW) theory is a topologically twisted version of N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. S-duality suggests that the partition function of VW theory with gauge group SU(N) transforms as a modular form under duality transformations. Interestingly, Vafa and Witten demonstrated the presence of a modular anomaly, when the theory has gauge group SU(2) and is considered on the complex projective plane P2. This modular anomaly could be expressed as an integral of a modular form, and also be traded for a holomorphic anomaly. We demonstrate that the modular anomaly for gauge group SU(3) invo…
Topologically twisted $\mathcal{N} = 4$ super Yang-Mills theory has a partition function that counts Euler numbers of instanton moduli spaces. On the manifold $\mathbb{P}^2$ and with gauge group $\mathrm{U}(3)$ this partition function has a holomorphic anomaly which makes it a mock modular form of depth two. We employ the Circle Method to find a Rademacher expansion for the Fourier coefficients of this partition function. This is the first example of the use of Circle Method for a mock modular form of a higher depth.
The 6d (2,0) theory of $N$ M5 branes compactified on the product geometry $T^2\times S$, where $S$ is a Kähler 4-manifold, can be studied in two different limits. In one limit, the size of $T^2$ is taken to zero and together with a topological twist one arrives at the Vafa-Witten partition function on $S$. On the other hand, taking the size of $S$ to zero leads to a 2d $\mathcal{N}=(0,4)$ theory. This gives rise to a 2d-4d correspondence where the Vafa-Witten partition functions are identified with the characters of the 2d theory. In this paper, we test this conjecture for Hirzebruch and Del P…
We regard the work of Maulik and Toda, proposing a sheaf-theoretic approach to Gopakumar-Vafa invariants, as defining a BPS structure, that is, a collection of BPS invariants together with a central charge. Assuming their conjectures, we show that a canonical flat section of the flat connection corresponding to this BPS structure, at the level of formal power series, reproduces the Gromov-Witten partition function for all genera, up to some error terms in genus 0 and 1. This generalises a result of Bridgeland and Iwaki for the contribution from genus 0 Gopakumar-Vafa invariants.
We prove a conjectural vanishing result for Gopakumar--Vafa invariants of quintic 3-folds, referred to as Castelnuovo bound in the literature. Furthermore, we calculate Gopakumar--Vafa invariants at Castelnuovo bound $g=\frac{d^2+5d+10}{10}$. As physicists showed, these two properties allow us to compute all Gromov--Witten invariants of quintic 3-folds up to genus $53$, provided that the conifold gap condition holds. We also give a bound for the genus of any one-dimensional closed subscheme in a smooth hypersurface of degree $\leq 5$, which may be of independent interest.
Using the interpretation of certain generalised Donaldson-Thomas invariants, including stable pairs curve counts, as the monodromy of a flat connection on a formal principal bundle, we show that the conjectural Gopakumar-Vafa contributions of all genera to the Gromov-Witten partition function appear in the asymptotics of the corresponding flat sections. The Fourier-Laplace integrals used to produce flat sections lead naturally to the GW/DT change of variable -q = e^{i u}.
In analogy with the Gopakumar-Vafa (GV) conjecture on Calabi-Yau (CY) 3-folds, Klemm and Pandharipande defined GV type invariants on Calabi-Yau 4-folds using Gromov-Witten theory and conjectured their integrality. In a joint work with Maulik and Toda, the author conjectured their genus zero invariants are $\mathrm{DT_4}$ invariants of one dimensional stable sheaves. In this paper, we study this conjecture on the total space of canonical bundle of a Fano 3-fold $Y$, which reduces to a relation between twisted GW and $\mathrm{DT_3}$ invariants on $Y$. Examples are computed for both compact and n…

In this paper, we propose an ansatz for defining Gopakumar-Vafa invariants of Calabi-Yau threefolds, using perverse sheaves of vanishing cycles. Our proposal is a modification of a recent approach of Kiem-Li, which is itself based on earlier ideas of Hosono-Saito-Takahashi. We conjecture that these invariants are equivalent to other curve-counting theories such as Gromov-Witten theory and Pandharipande-Thomas theory. Our main theorem is that, for local surfaces, our invariants agree with PT invariants for irreducible one-cycles. We also give a counter-example to the Kiem-Li conjectures, where …
The Gopakumar-Vafa type invariants on Calabi-Yau 4-folds (which are non-trivial only for genus zero and one) are defined by Klemm-Pandharipande from Gromov-Witten theory, and their integrality is conjectured. In a previous work of Cao-Maulik-Toda, $\mathrm{DT}_4$ invariants with primary insertions on moduli spaces of one dimensional stable sheaves are used to give a sheaf theoretical interpretation of the genus zero GV type invariants. In this paper, we propose a sheaf theoretical interpretation of the genus one GV type invariants using descendent insertions on the above moduli spaces. The con…
A difference equation is proved for the Gromov-Witten potential of the resolved conifold. Using the Gopakumar-Vafa resummation of the Gromov-Witten invariants of any Calabi-Yau threefold, it is further shown that similar difference equations are satisfied by the part of the resummed potential containing the contribution of the genus zero GV invariants.
