Radiative heat transfer (RHT) and radiative thermal energy (RTE) for 2D nanoparticle ensembles are investigated in the framework of many-body radiative heat transfer theory. We consider nanoparticles made of different materials: metals (Ag), polar dielectrics (SiC) or insulator-metallic phase-change materials (VO$_2$). We start by investigating the RHT between two parallel 2D finite-size square-lattice nanoparticle ensembles, with particular attention to many-body interactions (MBI) effects. We systematically analyze the different physical regimes characterizing the RHT. When $p\ll λ_T$, a multiple scattering of the electromagnetic field inside the systems gives rise to a MBI regime. MBI effects manifest themselves in different ways, depending on $d$: (a) if $d > λ_T$, due to the pure intra-ensemble MBI inside each 2D ensemble, the total heat conductance is less affected, and the thermal conductance spectrum manifests a single peak which is nonetheless shifted with respect to the one typical of two isolated nanoparticles. (b) if $d < λ_T$, there is a strong simultaneous intra- and inter-ensemble MBI. In this regime there is a direct quantitative effect on the heat conductance, in addition to a qualitative effect on the thermal conductance spectrum which now manifests a new second peak. As for the RTE, to correctly describe the radiation emitted by metallic nanoparticles, we derive an expression of the Poynting vector including also magnetic contribution, in addition to the electric one. By analyzing both periodic and non-periodic ensembles, we show that the RTE emitted by a single 2D nanoparticle ensemble is sensitive to the particle distribution. As instance, we see that the RTE emitted by 2D concentric ring-configuration ensemble has an inhibition feature near the center of the ensemble.
We study the effect of particles shape on the radiative heat transfer in a three-body system. It is found that the radiative heat flux between two nanoparticles in a three body system can be tuned by the shape of the third particle. In particular, we show that the heat flux is very sensitive to the particle shapes and slight mismatches of shapes results in either enhanced or suppressed heat flux.
Modulation of near-field radiative heat transfer (NFRHT) with rotated anisotropic hBN and MoO3 nanoparticles (NPs) are investigated. The spectral heat power, total heat power and electric field energy density are calculated at different particle orientations. Numerical results show that the modulation factor of the MoO3 NPs could be up to ~12000 with particle radius of 40 nm at a gap distance of 200 nm, which is ~ 10-fold larger than the state of the art. Excitation of localized hyperbolic phonon polaritons (LHPPs) in different particle orientations allow for the excellent modulation. The modu…
Controlling the temperature in architectures involving nanoparticles and substrates is a key issue for applications involving micro and nanoscale heat transfer. We study the thermal behavior of a single nanoparticle interacting with a flat substrate under external monochromatic illumination, and with thermal radiation as the unique heat loss channel. We develop a model to compute the temperature of the nanoparticle, based on an effective dipole-polarizability approach. Using numerical simulations, we thoroughly investigate the impacts of various parameters affecting the nanoparticle temperatur…
We show that the radiative heat flux between two nanoparticles can be significantly amplified when they are placed in proximity of a planar substrate supporting a surface resonance. The amplification factor goes beyond two orders of magnitude in the case of dielectric nanoparticles, whereas it is lower in the case of metallic nanoparticles. We analyze how this effect depends on the frequency and on the particles-surface distance, by clearly identifying the signature of the surface mode producing the amplification. Finally, we show how the presence of a graphene sheet on top of the substrate ca…
We investigate the radiative heat transport along a Su-Schrieffer-Heeger chain of InSb nanoparticles. We show that in the topological non-trivial phase, the edge modes dominate the radiative heat transport despite their strong localization at the edges of the finite chain due to a long-range coupling of the first and last particle. We further discuss the scaling laws of the heat transfer with respect to the chain length for the longitudinal and transversal band- and edge modes and conclude that both type of modes obey the same scaling law.
Micro-nanoparticle systems have wide applications in thermal science and technology. In dense particulate system, the particle separation distance may be less than the characteristic thermal wavelength and near field effect will be significant and become a key factor to influence thermal radiation transfer in the system. In this study, radiative heat transfer (RHT) between two metallic nanoparticles clusters are explored using many-body radiative heat transfer theory implemented with the coupled electric and magnetic dipole (CEMD) approach, which effectively takes into account the contribution…
Radiative heat transfer in systems with core-shell nanoparticles may exhibit not only a combination of disparate physical properties of its components but also further enhanced properties that arise from the synergistic properties of the core and shell components. We study the thermal conductance between two core-shell nanoparticles (CSNPs). The contribution of electric and magnetic dipole moments to the thermal conductance depend sensitively on the core and shell materials, and adjustable by core size and shell thickness. We predict that the radiative heat transfer in a dimer of Au@SiO2 CSNPs…
We study the near-field radiative heat transfer between two twisted finite-size polar dielectric nanoparticle gratings. Differently from previous studies of the same configuration, we do not rely on any approximated effective medium theory to describe the gratings. By the full many-body radiative heat transfer theory we are able to investigate how the size, distance and relative orientation between the gratings influence the radiative heat flux. By changing the twisting angle $θ$, we show a significant oscillation of the thermal conductance $G(θ)$, due to the size effect for gratings of both s…
The authors of preprint arXiv:1810.00565 and paper in Light: Science & Applications (2019), Y. Dubi and Y. Sivan, made several wrong and inconsistent comments on several of our papers. In addition, the paper in Faraday Discuss. 214, 215-233 (2018) by the same authors also contains several wrong statements in relationship with our work. Moreover, the authors address in their comments features that were in fact not present in our work. In what follows we present correction to a number of specific points in which they either misrepresented or erroneously interpreted our published work.
We show that periodic multilayered structures allow to drastically enhance near-field radiative heat transfer between nanoparticles. In particular, when the two nanoparticles are placed on each side of the multilayered structure, at the same interparticle distance the resulting heat transfer is more than five orders of magnitude higher than that in the absence of the multilayered structure. This enhancement takes place in a broad range of distances and is due to the fact that the intermediate multilayered structure supports hyperbolic phonon polaritons with the key feature that the edge freque…
In chains of closely-spaced nanoparticles supporting surface polaritons, near-field electromagnetic coupling leads to collective effects and super-Planckian thermal radiation exchange. Researchers have primarily used two analytical approaches to calculate radiative heat transfer in these systems: fluctuational electrodynamics, which directly incorporates fluctuating thermal currents into Maxwell's equations, and a kinetic approach where the dispersion relation provides modes and propagation lengths for the Boltzmann transport equation. Here, we compare results from the two approaches in order …
Based on a microscopic approach, we propose a Lagrangian for the combined system of a rotating dielectric nanoparticle above a plane surface in the presence of electromagnetic vacuum fluctuations. In the framework of canonical quantization, the electromagnetic vacuum field is quantized in the presence of dielectric fields describing the nanoparticle and a semi-infinite dielectric with planar interface. The radiative heat power absorbed by the rotating nanoparticle is obtained and the result is in agreement with previous results when the the rotational frequency of the nanoparticle is zero or m…
We numerically study the tuning of the radiative heat transfer between a spherical InSb nanoparticle in the vicinity of a flat SiC surface assisted by a static magnetic field. By changing the value of the applied magnetic field, the dielectric function of the nanosphere becomes anisotropic due to the excitation of magneto-plasmons. In the dipolar approximation, the plasmon resonance of the particle splits into two additional satellite resonances that shift to higher and lower frequencies as the field increases. When one of the particle resonances overlaps with the phonon-polariton frequency of…
We discuss the design of the thermal analog of logic gates in systems made of a collection of nanoparticles. We demonstrate the possibility to perform NOT, OR, NOR, AND and NAND logical operations at submicrometric scale by controlling the near-field radiative heat exchanges between their components. We also address the important point of the role played by the inherent non-additivity of radiative heat transfer in the combination of logic gates. These results pave the way to the development of compact thermal circuits for information processing and thermal management, which might also be reali…
We study the radiative heat flux between two nanoparticles in close vicinity to the natural hyperbolic material hBN with its optical axis oriented parallel to the interface. We show that the heat flux between the nanoparticles can be efficiently modulated when rotating the nanoparticles due to the coupling to the highly directional hyperbolic surface modes in hBN. Finally, we discuss the thickness and distance dependence of this effect.
We theoretically investigate equilibrium behaviors and photothermal effects of a flexible plasmonic metamaterial composed of aramid nanofibers and gold nanoparticles. The fiber matrix is considered as an external field to reconfigure a nanoparticle assembly. We find that the heating process tunes particle-particle and fiber-particle interactions, which alter adsorption of nanoparticles on fiber surfaces or clustering in pore spaces. Thus, it is possible to control the nanoparticle self-assembly by laser illumination. Gold nanoparticles strongly absorb radiations and efficiently dissipate absor…
Topological phonon polaritons (TPhPs) are promising optical modes relevant in long-range radiative heat transfer, information processing and infrared sensing, whose topological protection is expected to enable their robust existence and transport. In this work we show that TPhPs can be supported in one-dimensional (1D) bichromatic silicon carbide nanoparticle (NP) chains, and demonstrate that they can considerably enhance radiative heat transfer for an array much longer than the wavelength of radiation. By introducing incommensurate or commensurate modulations on the interparticle distances, t…
We study the effect of the electromagnetic environment on the resonance frequency of plasmonic excitations in dimers of interacting metallic nanoparticles. The coupling between plasmons and vacuum electromagnetic fluctuations induces a shift in the resonance frequencies (analogous to the Lamb shift in atomic physics) which is usually not measurable in an isolated nanoparticle. In contrast, we show that this shift leads to sizable corrections to the level splitting induced by dipolar interactions in nanoparticle dimers. For the system parameters which we consider in this work, the ratio between…
It is challenging to strongly localize temperature in small volumes because heat transfer is a diffusive process. Here we show how to overcome this limitation using electrodynamic hot spots and interference effects in the regime of continuous-wave (CW) excitation. We introduce a set of figures of merit for the localization of temperature and for the efficiency of the plasmonic photo-thermal effect. Our calculations show that the temperature localization in a trimer nanoparticle assembly is a complex function of the geometry and sizes. Large nanoparticles in the trimer play the role of the nano…
When two objects made of a material which supports surface modes are brought in close proximity to each other such that the vacuum gap between them is less than the thermal wavelength of radiation, then the coupling between the surface modes provides an important channel for the heat transfer to occur which is different from that mediated by long range propagating electromagnetic waves. Indeed, the heat transfer then exceeds Planck's blackbody limit by several orders of magnitude, and consequently has been used for several energy applications such as near-field thermophotovoltaic systems. This…
Heat transfer from irradiated metallic nanoparticles is relevant to a broad array of applications ranging from water desalination to photoacoustics. The efficacy of such processes relies on the ability of these nanoparticles to absorb the pulsed illuminating light and to quickly transfer energy to the environment. Here we show that compared to homogeneous gold nanoparticles having the same size, gold-silica core-shell nanoparticles enable heat transfers to liquid water that are faster. We reach this conclusion by considering both analytical and numerical calculations. The key factor explaining…
Metasurfaces, the two-dimensional (2D) counterpart of metamaterials, have recently attracted a great attention due to their amazing properties such as negative refraction, hyperbolic dispersion, manipulation of the evanescent spectrum. In this work, we propose a theory model for the near field radiative heat transfer (NFRHT) between two nanoparticles in the presence of an anisotropic metasurface. Specifically, we set the metasurface as an array of graphene strips (GS) since it is an ideal platform to implement any metasurface topology, ranging from isotropic to hyperbolic propagation. We show …
Quantizing the electromagnetic vacuum and medium fields of two nanoparticles, we investigate the heat transfer between them. One of the particles has been considered to rotate by angular velocity $ ω_0 $. The effect of rotation on the absorbed heat power by the rotating nanoparticle is discussed. The results for angular velocities much smaller than the relaxation frequency $ Γ$ of the dielectrics are in agreement with the static nanoparticles, however increasing the angular velocity $ ω_0 $ in comparison to the relaxation frequency of the dielectrics $ (ω_0\geqslant Γ) $ generates two sideband…
To evaluate the self-heating effects of FeCo magnetic nanoparticles, the surface oxidized FeCo nanoparticles were synthesized by co-precipitation method with the reduction reaction without any post treatments. As-synthesized FeCo nanoparticles exhibited the mean diameter of about 39 nm with the oxidized shell thickness of about 4-5 nm. The saturation magnetization and coercivity were obtained 172 emu/g and 268 Oe at 300 K, respectively. The heat elevation of the FeCo magnetic colloid was measured under alternating magnetic fields of 76, 102, and 127 Oe with selectable frequencies of 190, 250 a…
We theoretically investigate photothermal heating of ultra-flexible metamaterials, which are obtained by randomly mixing TiN nanoparticles in polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). Due to the plasmonic properties of TiN nanoparticles, incident light is perfectly absorbed in a broadband range (300-3000 nm) to generate heat within these metamaterials. Under irradiation of an 808 nm near-infrared laser with different intensities, our predicted temperature rises as a function of time agree well with recent experimental data. For a given laser intensity, the temperature rise varies non-monotonically with con…
We present a simple model of collective plasmons in a dimerized chain of spherical metallic nanoparticles, an elementary example of a topologically nontrivial nanoplasmonic system. Taking into account long-range quasistatic dipolar interactions throughout the chain, we provide an exact analytical expression for the full quasistatic bandstructure of the collective plasmons. An explicit calculation of the Zak phase proves the robustness of the topological physics of the system against the inclusion of long-range Coulomb interactions, despite the broken chiral symmetry. Using an open quantum syst…
In the present Letter we investigate the heat and momentum fluxes radiated by a hot magneto-optical nanoparticle in its surrounding under the action of an external magnetic field. We show that the flux lines circulate in a confined region at nanometric distance from the particle around the axis of magnetic field in a vortex-like configuration. Moreover we prove that the spatial orientation of these vortices (clockwise or counterclockwise) is associated to the contribution of optical resonances with topological charges m = +1 or m = -1 to the thermal emission. This work paves the way to a geome…
The deterministic Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation has been used to investigate the nonlinear dynamics of magnetization and the specific loss power in magnetic nanoparticles with uniaxial anisotropy driven by a rotating magnetic field. We propose a new type of applied field, which is "simultaneously rotating and alternating", i.e. the direction of the rotating external field changes periodically. We show that a more efficient heat generation by magnetic nanoparticles is possible with this new type of applied field and we suggest its possible experimental realization in cancer therapy which req…
We demonstrate the existence of a shuttling effect for the radiative heat flux exchanged between two bodies separated by a vacuum gap when the chemical potential of photons or the temperature difference is modulated. We show that this modulation typically gives rise to a supplementary flux which superimposes to the flux produced by the mean gradient, enhancing the heat exchange. When the system displays a negative differential thermal resistance, however, the radiative shuttling contributes to insulate the two bodies from each other. These results pave the way for a novel strategy for an activ…
In this work, we study the near-field radiative heat transfer between two suspended sheets of anisotropic 2D materials. It is found that the radiative heat transfer can be enhanced with orders-of-magnitude over the blackbody limit for nanoscale separation. The enhancement is attributed to the excitation of anisotropic and hyperbolic plasmonic modes. Meanwhile, a large thermal modulation effect, depending on the twisted angle of principal axes between the upper and bottom sheets of anisotropic 2D materials, is revealed. The near-field radiative heat transfer for different concentrations of elec…
The concept of quantum plasmonic excitations in plasmonic lattices, which similarly to Frenkel excitons in molecular crystals propagate by hopping from one nanoparticle to another, is introduced. A consistent quantum theory of such plasmonic excitons, beginning with the quantization of localized surface plasmons in a metal nanoparticle and including the radiative relaxation in both 1D and 2D lattices near a reflective substrate surface, is developed. A possible room-temperature Bose-Einstein condensation in the quantum gas of plasmonic excitons is also discussed.
This paper presents an analysis and some interesting observations regarding the classical electromagnetic background to the heating of gold nanoparticles (GNPs) in the radio frequency spectrum. Here, it is assumed that the related dipole effects are based solely on homogeneous conducting nanospheres that are immersed in an lossy medium. From this point of view it is concluded that the effect of using a capacitive coupling i.e., a strong electric field to induce electric dipoles can be disregarded unless the volume fraction of the GNPs is unrealistically high, or if there are some other electri…
We consider a chain of regularly-spaced spherical metallic nanoparticles, where each particle supports three degenerate localized surface plasmons. Due to the dipolar interaction between the nanoparticles, the localized plasmons couple to form extended collective modes. Using an open quantum system approach in which the collective plasmons are interacting with vacuum electromagnetic modes and which, importantly, readily incorporates retardation via the light-matter coupling, we analytically evaluate the resulting radiative frequency shifts of the plasmonic bandstructure. For subwavelength-size…
Current thermometry techniques lack the spatial resolution required to see the temperature gradients in typical, highly-scaled modern transistors. As a step toward addressing this problem, we have measured the temperature dependence of the volume plasmon energy in silicon nanoparticles from room temperature to 1250$^\circ$C, using a chip-style heating sample holder in a scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) equipped with electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS). The plasmon energy changes as expected for an electron gas subject to the thermal expansion of silicon. Reversing this rea…
Understanding high-field amplitude electromagnetic heat loss phenomena is of great importance, in particular in the biomedical field, since the heat-delivery treatment plans might rely on analytical models that are only valid at low field amplitudes. Here, we develop a nonlinear response model valid for single- domain nanoparticles of larger particle sizes and higher field amplitudes in comparison to linear response theory. A nonlinear magnetization expression and a generalized heat loss power equation are obtained and compared with the exact solution of the stochastic Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert …
