In the present Letter we investigate the heat and momentum fluxes radiated by a hot magneto-optical nanoparticle in its surrounding under the action of an external magnetic field. We show that the flux lines circulate in a confined region at nanometric distance from the particle around the axis of magnetic field in a vortex-like configuration. Moreover we prove that the spatial orientation of these vortices (clockwise or counterclockwise) is associated to the contribution of optical resonances with topological charges m = +1 or m = -1 to the thermal emission. This work paves the way to a geometric description of heat and momentum transport in lattices of magneto-optical particles. Moreover it could have important applications in the field of energy storage as well as in thermal management at nanoscale.
Magnetotransport in arrays of monodisperse magnetite nanoparticles has been studied as a function of annealing temperatures. Charge transport mechanisms change from thermally assisted interparticle tunneling to hopping between Fe-sites within the particle as the interparticle spacing is decreased. Despite this difference, magnetoresistance (MR) as a function of field shows a ubiquitous behavior dominated by non-collinear surface spins. All MR as a function of field can be fitted accurately by a Langevin-like function.
The magnetic properties of Fe$_3$O$_4$ nanoparticle assemblies have been investigated in detail through a combination of vibrating sample magnetometry and muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) techniques. Two samples with average particle sizes of 5 nm and 20 nm, respectively, were studied. For both samples, the magnetometry and $μ$SR results exhibit clear signatures of the superparmagnetic state at high temperature and the magnetically blocked state at low temperature. The $μ$SR data demonstrate that the transition from the superparamagnetic to the blocked state occurs gradually throughout the sample …
We address the theory of the coupled lattice and magnetization dynamics of freely suspended single-domain nanoparticles. Magnetic anisotropy generates low-frequency satellite peaks in the microwave absorption spectrum and a blueshift of the ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) frequency. The low-frequency resonances are very sharp with maxima exceeding that of the FMR, because their magnetic and mechanical precessions are locked, thereby suppressing Gilbert damping. Magnetic nanoparticles can operate as nearly ideal motors that convert electromagnetic into mechanical energy. The Barnett/Einstein-de H…
Recent work [1] demonstrated high coercivity and magnetic moment in cobalt carbide nanoparticle assemblies and explained the high coercivity from first principles in terms of the high magnetocrystalline anisotropy of the cobalt carbide nanoparticles. In this work, we comprehensively model the interaction between the nanoparticles comprising the assembly and systematically understand the effect of particle size, distribution of the orientations of the nanoparticles' magnetocrystalline anisotropy axis with respect to the applied magnetic field, and dipole coupling between nanoparticles on the te…
We study the influence of an external magnetic field on the collective electronic excitations in metallic nanoparticles. While the usual surface plasmon corresponding to the collective oscillation of the electrons with respect to the ionic background persists in the direction parallel to the magnetic field, the components in the perpendicular plane are affected by the field and give rise to two collective modes with field-dependent frequencies, the surface magnetoplasmons. We analyze the decay of these collective excitations by their coupling to particle-hole excitations and determine how thei…
We present a theoretical investigation of magnetostatic interaction effects in geometrically frustrated arrays of anisotropic multilayer ferromagnetic nanoparticles arranged in different spatially configured systems with triangular symmetry. We show that the interlayer magnetostatic interaction significantly expands the opportunities to create magnetically frustrated systems. The effects of the magnetostatic interaction in magnetization reversal processes and the possibility to control the ferromagnetic resonance spectrum in such systems are discussed.
The elements of the magneto-dipole (MD) interaction matrix are calculated for a pair of oriented spheroidal magnetic nanoparticles with a semiaxes ratio a/b = 1.25, 1.5, 2.0 and 3.0 as a function of the distance between the particle centers. It is shown that the spherical approximation for MD interaction matrix is incorrect already at aspect ratios a/b > 1.25, if the distance R between the particle centers is of the order of particle sizes. However, for moderate particle aspect ratios, a/b < 1.5, the first order correction to spherical approximation with respect to a corresponding small parame…
Bimetallic Co/Au (core/shell) nanoparticle system exhibiting transition form superparamagnetic (SPM) to superspin glass state (SSG) at low temperatures has been investigated with respect to its magnetocaloric properties. Peaks of magnetic entropy change vs. temperature dependences ($ΔS_M(T)$) have been observed at a temperature in the vicinity of SPM to SSG transition. Despite of significant thermal hysteresis of magnetization at low applied fields a master curve has been constructed from the $ΔS_M(T)$ dependences employing scaling analysis. That confirms the investigated transition is of the …
A tabletop Optically Pumped Magnetometer setup for the monitoring of magnetic nanoparticle clustering and immobilization using Thermal Noise Magnetometry
Magnetic nanoparticles have proven to be valuable for biomedical applications. A prerequisite for the efficiency of these applications are precisely characterized particles. Thermal Noise Magnetrometry (TNM), unlike any other magnetic characterization method, allows to characterize the particles without the application of an external excitation. We present a theoretical framework to model the experiment in order to examine the magnetic noise power properties of particle ensembles in TNM and optimize the geometry of the nanoparticle sample. An optimized sample geometry is calculated to maximize…
Temperature dependence of the tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) was calculated in range of the quantum-ballistic model in the magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) with embedded nanoparticles (NPs). The electron tunnel transport through NP was simulated in range of double barrier approach, which was integrated into the model of the magnetic point-like contact. The resonant TMR conditions and temperature impact were explored in detail. Moreover, the possible reasons of the temperature induced resonant conditions were discussed in the range of the lead-tunneling cell-lead model near Kondo temperature. W…
In this article we study magnetotransport in single nanoparticles of Ni, Py=Ni$_{0.8}$Fe$_{0.2}$, Co, and Fe, with volumes $15\pm 6$nm$^3$, using sequential electron tunneling at 4.2K temperature. We measure current versus magnetic field in the ensembles of nominally the same samples, and obtain the abundances of magnetic hysteresis. The hysteresis abundance varies among the metals as Ni:Py:Co:Fe=4\,:50\,:100\,:100(\%), in good correlation with the magnetostatic and magnetocrystalline anisotropy. The abrupt change in the hysteresis abundance among these metals suggests a concept of minimum mag…
We extend a renormalization group-based course-graining method for micromagnetic simulations to include properly scaled magnetostatic interactions. We apply the method in simulations of dynamic hysteresis loops at clinically relevant sweep rates and at 310 K of iron oxide nanoparticles (NPs) of the kind that have been used in preclinical studies of magnetic hyperthermia. The coarse-graining method, along with a time scaling involving sweep rate and Gilbert damping parameter, allow us to span length scales from the unit cell to NPs approximately 50 nm in diameter with reasonable simulation time…
The dielectric properties of Fe$_{3}$O$_{4}$ magnetic nanoparticles with an insulating coating layer of SiO$_{2}$ were investigated. At high temperatures, the changes of the dielectric constant and loss induced by the magnetic field are opposite in sign and strongly frequency-dependent, which originates from extrinsic magnetodielectric coupling-the Maxwell-Wagner effect combined with magnetoresistance. And the interface defects leads to the obvious hysteresis phenomena observed in the measurements. On the other hand, the strong coupling of dielectric and magnetic properties at low temperatures…
The stochastic Landau-Lifshitz equation is used to investigate the relaxation process and equilibrium magnetization of interacting assembly of superparamagnetic nanoparticles uniformly distributed in a nonmagnetic matrix. For weakly interacting assembly the equilibrium magnetization is shown to deviate significantly from the Langevin law in the range of moderate and large magnetic fields due to the influence of magnetic anisotropy energy. For dense assemblies with noticeable influence of the magneto-dipole interaction a significant dependence of the initial susceptibility on the assembly densi…
Magnetophoretic force acting on a rigid spherical cluster of single-domain nanoparticles in a constant-gradient weak magnetic field is investigated numerically using the Langevin dynamics simulation method. Nanoparticles are randomly and uniformly distributed within the cluster volume. They interact with each other via long-range dipole-dipole interactions. Simulations reveal that if the total amount of particles in the cluster is kept constant, the force decreases with increasing nanoparticle concentration due to the demagnetizing field arising inside the cluster. Numerically obtained force v…
A specific absorption rate of a dilute assembly of various random clusters of iron oxide nanoparticles in alternating magnetic field has been calculated using Landau- Lifshitz stochastic equation. This approach simultaneously takes into account both the presence of thermal fluctuations of the nanoparticle magnetic moments, and magneto-dipole interaction between the nanoparticles of the clusters. It is shown that for usual 3D clusters the intensity of magneto- dipole interaction is determined mainly by the cluster packing density eta = Np*V/Vcl, where Np is the average number of the particles i…
A Hall magnetometer with variable sensitivity is constructed to measure the magnetic properties of magnetic nanoparticles manufactured by different methods. This novel magnetometer can also be used to measure bulk materials and samples in liquids. For operation, the magnetometer it acquires a complete magnetization curve in a few minutes. If has a magnetic moment sensitivity of 1.3*10-9 Am2 to sensitivity of 493 mV…
The tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) in the magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) with embedded nanoparticles (NPs) was calculated in range of the quantum-ballistic model. The simulation was performed for electron tunneling through the insulating layer with embedded magnetic and nonmagnetic NPs within the approach of the double barrier subsystem connected in parallel to the single barrier one. This model can be applied for both MTJs with in-plane magnetization and perpendicular one. We also calculated the in-plane component of the spin transfer torque (STT) versus the applied voltage in MTJs with magne…
In the dual-phase model of interacting nanoparticles stretching leads to a decrease in both coercive force $H_c$ and saturation remanence $I_{rs}$, and compression - to their growth. Magnetostatic interaction between particles also decreases both $H_c$ and $I_{rs}$. Theoretical analysis was carried out in the framework of the dual-phase system of interacting particles on the example of nanoparticles $γ$-$Fe_2O_3$, epitaxially coated with cobalt.

The complex permittivity and permeability of superparamagnetic iron-oxide nanoparticles has been quantified using a circular waveguide assembly with a static magnetic field to align the nanoparticle's magnetization. The high sensitivity of the measurement provides the precise resonant feature of nanoparticles. The complex permeability in the vicinity of ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) is in agreement with the nanoparticle's measured magnetization via conventional magnetometry. A rigorous and self-consistent measure of complex permittivities and permeabilities of nanoparticles is crucial to ascer…
We study composites of monodisperse ferrimagnetic nanoparticles (NPs) embedded into ferroelectric barium titanate (BTO) films. The BTO films were prepared by pulsed laser deposition. The composite consists of a stack of two BTO films sandwiching one monolayer of iron oxide NPs. We observe a magnetoelectric coupling due to strain and interface charge co-mediation between the BTO and the NPs. This is demonstrated by measurements of the magnetization as function of DC and AC electric fields.
Magnetic nanoparticles offer a unique potential for various biomedical applications, but prior to commercial usage a standardized characterization of their structural and magnetic properties is required. For a thorough characterization, the combination of conventional magnetometry and advanced scattering techniques has shown great potential. In the present work, we characterize a powder sample of high-quality iron oxide nanoparticles that are surrounded with a homogeneous thick silica shell by DC magnetometry and magnetic small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). To retrieve the particle paramete…
We have studied the electron transport in SiO${}_2$(Co)/GaAs and SiO${}_2$(Co)/Si heterostructures, where the SiO${}_2$(Co) structure is the granular SiO${}_2$ film with Co nanoparticles. In SiO${}_2$(Co)/GaAs heterostructures giant magnetoresistance effect is observed. The effect has positive values, is expressed, when electrons are injected from the granular film into the GaAs semiconductor, and has the temperature-peak type character. The temperature location of the effect depends on the Co concentration and can be shifted by the applied electrical field. For the SiO${}_2$(Co)/GaAs heterost…
We demonstrate room temperature detection of single 20 nm super-paramagnetic nanoparticles (SPNs) with a wide-field optical microscope platform suitable for biological integration. The particles are made of magnetite (Fe3O4) and are thus non-toxic and biocompatible. Detection is accomplished via optically detected magnetic resonance imaging using nitrogen-vacancy defect centers in diamond, resulting in a DC magnetic field detection limit of 2.3 μT. This marks a large step forward in the detection of SPNs, and we expect that it will allow for the development of magnetic-field-based biosensors c…
We show that by capping Co nanoparticles with small amounts of Pt strong changes of the magnetic properties can be induced. The Co nanoparticles have a mean diameter of 2.7 nm. From magnetometry measurements we find that for zero and for small amounts of Pt (nominal thickness t(Pt) < 0.7 nm) the nanoparticles behave superparamagnetic like. With increasing t(Pt) the blocking temperature is enhanced from 16 up to 108 K. Capping with Pd yields comparable results. However, for values t(Pt) > 1 nm a strongly coupled state is encountered resembling a ferromagnet with a T_c approx. 400 K
Magnetosomes, i.e. nanoparticles synthesized in nature by magnetotactic bacteria, are very promising for use in magnetic hyperthermia for the cancer treatment. Using the solution of the stochastic Landau-Lifshitz equation we calculate the specific absorption rate in an alternating magnetic field of assemblies of magnetosome chains depending on the particle size, the distance between particles in a chain, and the angle of the applied magnetic field with respect to the chain axis. The dependence of specific absorption rate on the distance between the chain particles is shown to have a bell-shape…
In this paper, we attempt the theoretical modeling of the magnetic tunnel junctions with embedded magnetic and nonmagnetic nanoparticles (NPs). A few abnormal tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) effects, observed in related experiments, can be easily simulated within our model: we found, that the suppressed TMR magnitudes and the TMR sign-reversing effect at small voltages are related to the electron momentum states of the NP located inside the insulating layer. All these TMR behaviors can be explained within the tunneling model, where NP is simulated as a quantum well (QW). The coherent (direct) d…
We report about a combined structural and magnetometric characterization of self-assembled magnetic nanoparticle arrays. Monodisperse iron oxide nanoparticles with a diameter of 20 nm were synthesized by thermal decomposition. The nanoparticle suspension was spin-coated on Si substrates to achieve self-organized arrays of particles and subsequently annealed at various conditions. The samples were characterized by x-ray diffraction, bright and dark field high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). The structural analysis is compared to the magnetic behavior investigated by superco…
Magnetic field induced drastically augmented thermal conductivity of magneto nanocolloids involving magnetic oxide nanoparticles, viz. Fe2O3, Fe3O4, Nickel oxide (NiO), Cobalt oxide (Co3O4), dispersed in different base fluids (heat transfer oil, kerosene, and ethylene glycol) have been reported. Experiments reveal the augmented thermal transport under the external applied magnetic field, with kerosene based MNCs showing at relatively low magnetic field intensities as compared to the heat transfer oil and EG based MNCs. A maximum thermal conductivity enhancement of 114 % is attained at 7.0 vol.…
We report the results of experimental investigations of controlled domain wall (DW) pinning in a ferromagnetic nanowire (NW) by stray fields of two uniformly magnetized bistable ferromagnetic nanoparticles (NPs) placed on either side of the NW and elongated parallel to the NW axis. We show by magnetic force microscopy measurements that DW pinning strength essentially depends on the orientation of the NP magnetic moments relative to the NW magnetization and can reach 20 mT. We also performed micromagnetic simulations confirming the influence of the magnetostatic interaction of the DW with the N…
Despite extensive researches on manganites owing to widespread use in modern electronics, this class of metal oxides does not cease to surprise with its unique properties and new phenomena. Here we have studied structural and magnetic properties of non-Heisenberg manganite nanoparticles with a strong spin-electron coupling. During transition from low temperature ferromagnetic to high temperature paramagnetic state, the change in charge, valence and spin (magnetic moment) with the localization of eg-electrons on the manganese ions have been detected. With decrease in a temperature, the overstat…
Micromagnetic simulations are used to examine the effects of cubic and axial anisotropy, magnetostatic interactions and temperature on M-H loops for a collection of magnetic dipoles on fcc and sc lattices. We employ a simple model of interacting dipoles that represent single-domain particles in an attempt to explain recent experimental data on ordered arrays of magnetoferritin nanoparticles that demonstrate the crucial role of interactions between particles in a fcc lattice. Significant agreement between the simulation and experimental results is achieved, and the impact of intra-particle degr…
In this work we describe different types of photonic structures that allow tunability of the photonic band gap upon the application of external stimuli, as the electric or magnetic field. We review and compare two porous 1D photonic crystals: in the first one a liquid crystal has been infiltrated in the pores of the nanoparticle network, while in the second one the optical response to the electric field of metallic nanoparticles has been exploited. Then, we present a 1D photonic crystal made with indium tin oxide (ITO) nanoparticles, and we propose this system for electro-optic tuning. Finally…
High fraction of the surface atoms considerably enhances the influence of size and shape on the magnetic and electronic properties of nanoparticles. Shape effects in ferromagnetic nanoparticles are well understood and allow to set and control the parameters of a sample that affect its magnetic anisotropy during production. In the present paper we study the shape effects in the other widely used magnetic materials -- antiferromagnets, -- which possess vanishingly small or zero macroscopic magnetization. We take into account the difference between the surface and bulk magnetic anisotropy of a na…
Magnetic measurements up to 1000 K have been performed on hydrothermally synthesized $α$-Fe$_{2}$O$_{3}$ nanoparticles (60 nm) using a Quantum Design vibrating sample magnetometer. A high vacuum environment (1$\times$10$^{-5}$ torr) during the magnetic measurement up to 1000 K leads to a complete reduction of $α$-Fe$_{2}$O$_{3}$ to Fe$_{3}$O$_{4}$. This precludes the determination of the Néel temperature for the $α$-Fe$_{2}$O$_{3}$ nanoparticles. In contrast, coating $α$-Fe$_{2}$O$_{3}$ nanoparticles with SiO$_{2}$ stabilizes the $α$-Fe$_{2}$O$_{3}$ phase up to 930 K, which allows us to determ…
We demonstrate the operation of low-noise nano superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) based on the high critical field and high critical temperature superconductor YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_7$ (YBCO) as ultra-sensitive magnetometers for single magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs). The nanoSQUIDs exploit the Josephson behavior of YBCO grain boundaries and have been patterned by focused ion beam milling. This allows to precisely define the lateral dimensions of the SQUIDs so as to achieve large magnetic coupling between the nanoloop and individual MNPs. By means of focused electron beam induced de…
We study the enhancement of the magneto-optical effect in subdiffraction plasmonic chains. We show that in a periodic chain of the plasmonic nanoparticles embedded in a magneto-optical medium, propagation of a guided mode is accompanied by rotation of electrical dipoles (the Faraday effect). The angle of rotation per 1 μm is two orders of magnitude greater than that in the same bulk magneto-optical medium. We also demonstrate that the effect of Ohmic losses can be significantly reduced by using a gain-assisted chain composed of active core-shell nanoparticles (spasers). The dipole mode in such…
We unravel the underlying near-field mechanism of the enhancement of the magneto-optical activity of bismuth-substituted yttrium iron garnet films (Bi:YIG) loaded with gold nanoparticles. The experimental results show that the embedded gold nanoparticles lead to a broadband enhancement of the magneto-optical activity with respect to the activity of the bare Bi:YIG films. Full vectorial near- and far-field simulations demonstrate that this broadband enhancement is the result of a magneto-optically enabled cross-talking of orthogonal localized plasmon resonances. Our results pave the way to the …
The combination of high sensitive superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) with high quality nanoparticles allowed to check the simplest classical model describing the magnetisation reversal by uniform rotation which were proposed more than 50 years ago by Neel, Stoner and Wohlfarth. The micrometer sized SQUIDs were elaborated by electron beam lithography and the nanoparticles were synthesised by arc-discharge. The measured angular dependence of switching fields of nearly all f.c.c. Co nanoparticles revealed a dominating uniaxial magnetic anisotropy. This result suggests that twin b…
We report about the magnetic properties of antiferromagnetic (AF) MnO nanoparticles (NPs) with different sizes (6-19nm). Using a combination of polarized neutron scattering and magnetometry we were able to resolve previously observed peculiarities. Magnetometry, on the one hand, reveals a peak in the zero field cooled (ZFC) magnetization curves at low temperatures (~25K) but no feature around the Néel temperature at 118K. On the other hand, polarized neutron scattering shows the expected behavior of the AF order parameter vanishing around 118K. Moreover, hysteresis curves measured at various t…
Highly sophisticated synthesis methods and experimental techniques allow for precise measurements of magnetic properties of nanoparticles that can be reliably reproduced using theoretical models. Here, we investigate the magnetic properties of ferrite nanoparticles by using theoretical techniques based on Monte Carlo methods. We introduce three stages of sophistication in the macromagnetic model. First, by using tailor-made hamiltonians we study single nanoparticles. In a second stage, the internal structure of the nanoparticle is taken into consideration by defining an internal (core) and ext…
Single domain magnetic nanoparticles (MNP) interacting through dipolar interactions (DDI) in addition to the magnetocrystalline energy may present a low temperature ferromagnetic (SFM) or spin glass (SSG) phase according to the underlying structure and the degree of order of the assembly. We study, from Monte Carlo simulations in the framework of the effective one-spin or macrospin models, the case of a monodisperse assembly of single domain MNP fixed on the sites of a perfect lattice with fcc symmetry and randomly distributed easy axes. We limit ourselves to the case of a low anisotropy, name…
Magnetic skyrmions formed at temperatures around room temperature in square-based parallelepiped magnetic FePt nanoparticles with perpendicular magnetocrystalline anisotropy (MCA) were studied during the magnetization reversal using micromagnetic simulations. Finite Differences (FD) method were used for the solution of the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation. Magnetic configurations exhibiting Néel skyrmionic formations were detected. The magnetic skyrmions can be created in different systems generated by the variation of external field, side length and width of the squared-based parallelepiped m…
Magnetic measurements have been performed on 40-nm sphere-like Fe3O4 nanoparticles using a Quantum Design vibrating sample magnetometer. Coating Fe3O4 nanoparticles with SiO2 effectively eliminates magnetic interparticle interactions so that the coercive field HC in the hightemperature range between 300 K and the Curie temperature (855 K) can be well fitted by an expression for noninteracting randomly oriented single-domain particles. From the fitting parameters, the effective anisotropy constant K is found to be (1.68 \pm 0.17) \times 105 erg/cm3, which is slightly larger than the bulk magnet…
We numerically study the tuning of the radiative heat transfer between a spherical InSb nanoparticle in the vicinity of a flat SiC surface assisted by a static magnetic field. By changing the value of the applied magnetic field, the dielectric function of the nanosphere becomes anisotropic due to the excitation of magneto-plasmons. In the dipolar approximation, the plasmon resonance of the particle splits into two additional satellite resonances that shift to higher and lower frequencies as the field increases. When one of the particle resonances overlaps with the phonon-polariton frequency of…
We present an electrodynamical model of a novel quantum plasmonic device - magneto-optical spaser. It is shown that a spherical gain nanoparticle coated with a metallic magneto-optical shell can operate as a spaser amplifying circularly polarized surface plasmons. The magneto-optical spaser may be used in design of optical isolator in plasmonic transmission lines as well as in spaser spectrometry of chiral molecules.
A giant thermal magnetoresistance is predicted for the electromagnetic transport of heat in magneto-optical plasmonic structures. In chains of InSb-Ag nanoparticles at room temperature, we found that the resistance can be increased by almost a factor of 2 with magnetic fields of 2 T. We show that this important change results from the strong spectral dependence of localized surface waves on the magnitude of the magnetic field.
The optical properties of some nanomaterials can be controlled by an external magnetic field, providing active functionalities for a wide range of applications, from single-molecule sensing to nanoscale nonreciprocal optical isolation. Materials with broadband tunable magneto-optical response are therefore highly desired for various components in next-generation integrated photonic nanodevices. Concurrently, hyperbolic metamaterials received a lot of attention in the past decade since they exhibit unusual properties that are rarely observed in nature and provide an ideal platform to control th…
The influence of a patterned substrate on obliquely deposited, exchange biased Co/CoO films was studied. It was found that substrates decorated with nanoparticle patterns provide the option to manipulate the orientation of the magnetic easy axis in obliquely deposited thin films. The complementary methods of SQUID magnetometry and polarized neutron reflectometry were used to disentangle the different contributions to the magnetic hysteresis of such complex magnetic systems.
