We revisit the spectrum of pure quantum gravity in AdS$_3$. The computation of the torus partition function will -- if computed using a gravitational path integral that includes only smooth saddle points -- lead to a density of states which is not physically sensible, as it has a negative degeneracy of states for some energies and spins. We consider a minimal cure for this non-unitarity of the pure gravity partition function, which involves the inclusion of additional states below the black hole threshold. We propose a geometric interpretation for these extra states: they are conical defects with deficit angle $2π(1-1/N)$, where $N$ is a positive integer. That only integer values of $N$ should be included can be seen from a modular bootstrap argument, and leads us to propose a modest extension of the set of saddle-point configurations that contribute to the gravitational path integral: one should sum over orbifolds in addition to smooth manifolds. These orbifold states are below the black hole threshold and are regarded as massive particles in AdS, but they are not perturbative states: they are too heavy to form multi-particle bound states. We compute the one-loop determinant for gravitons in these orbifold backgrounds, which confirms that the orbifold states are Virasoro primaries. We compute the gravitational partition function including the sum over these orbifolds and find a finite, modular invariant result; this finiteness involves a delicate cancellation between the infinite tower of orbifold states and an infinite number of instantons associated with $PSL(2,{\mathbb Z})$ images.
The conical defect solutions in higher-spin gauge theories on 2+1 dimensional space-times with AdS-asymptotics are conjectured to correspond to certain primary fields in the dual conformal field theory on the boundary. In this note we prove that indeed all higher-spin charges match.
Conical defects, or point particles, in AdS_3 are one of the simplest non-trivial gravitating systems, and are particularly interesting because black holes can form from their collision. We embed the BPS conical defects of three dimensions into the N=4b supergravity in six dimensions, which arises from IIB string theory compactified on K3. The required Kaluza-Klein reduction of the six dimensional theory on a sphere is analyzed in detail, including the relation to the Chern-Simons supergravities in three dimensions. We show that the six dimensional spaces obtained by embedding the 3d conical d…
Kinematic space can be used as an intermediate step in the AdS/CFT dictionary and lends itself naturally to the description of diffeomorphism invariant quantities. From the bulk it has been defined as the space of boundary anchored geodesics, and from the boundary as the space of pairs of CFT points. When the bulk is not globally AdS$_3$ the appearance of non-minimal geodesics leads to ambiguities in these definitions. In this work conical defect spacetimes are considered as an example where non-minimal geodesics are common. From the bulk it is found that the conical defect kinematic space can…
We study the (super-)symmetries of classical solutions in the higher spin (super-)gravity in AdS$_3$. We show that the symmetries of the solutions are encoded in the holonomy around the spatial circle. When the spatial holonomies of the solutions are trivial, they preserve maximal symmetries of the theory, and are actually the smooth conical defects. We find all the smooth conical defects in the $sl(N), so(2N+1),sp(2N), so(2N), g_2$, as well as in $sl(N|N-1)$ and $osp(2N+1|2N)$ Chern-Simons gravity theories. In the bosonic higher spin cases, there are one-to-one correspondences between the smo…
We study conical geometry with the maximal number of fermionic symmetry in the higher spin supergravity described by sl(N+1|N) + sl(N+1|N) Chern-Simons gauge theory. It was proposed that a three dimensional N=2 higher spin supergravity is holographically dual to the N=(2,2) CP^N Kazama-Suzuki model. Based one the duality, we find a map between conical geometries and primary states in the dual CFT. In particular, we construct geometric solutions corresponding to primary states in the RR-sector. The proposal is checked by the comparison of a few charges and by the relation between null vectors a…
In this work, we initiate a holographic study of field theory on time dependent background with conical defect. We focus on the Milne space-time to which, in the absence of cosmological constant, at late time any hyperbolic Friedmann-Robertson-Walker metric flows to. When the Milne vacuum is represented by the adiabatic one, we are able to compute the two point correlators of operators which are dual to the massive scalars in the bulk AdS-Milne background with defect. We find, for both twisted and untwisted operators, the correlators can be represented as the sum over images. This sum can be c…
In this work, we found the solution for the field equations of eleven-dimensional supergravity with a BPS conical topological defect configuration. We chose the solutions that corresponded to a M2-brane where the space-time presents the co-dimension two. The source of the topological defect is a sigma model where the brane tension is connected with the angular deficit. We analyzed the Killing spinor equations, a 3-form gauge potential and Einstein's equations, proving that it is possible to find a full solution for the system. We analyzed the near-horizon limit proving that it is possible to o…
We study conical defect geometries in the SL(N) Chern-Simons formulation of higher spin gauge theories in AdS_3. We argue that (for N\geq 4) there are special values of the deficit angle for which these geometries are actually smooth configurations of the underlying theory. We also exhibit a gauge in which these geometries can be viewed as wormholes interpolating between two distinct asymptotically AdS_3 spacetimes. Remarkably, the spectrum of smooth SL(N,C) solutions, after an appropriate analytic continuation, exactly matches that of the so-called "light primaries" in the minimal model W_N C…
M-theory is known to possess supersymmetric solutions where the geometry is $\mathrm{AdS}_3\times S^3\times S^3$ warped over a Riemann surface $Σ_{2}$. The simplest examples in this class can be engineered by placing M2 and M5 branes as defects inside of a stack of background M5 branes. In this paper we show that a generalization of this construction yields more general solutions in the aforementioned class. The background branes are now M5's carrying M2 brane charge, while the defect branes are now placed at the origin of a flat hyperplane with a conical defect. The equations of motion imply …
A concept of measuring the quantum distance between two different quantum states which is called quantum information metric is presented. The holographic principle (AdS/CFT) suggests that the quantum information metric $G_{λλ}$ between perturbed state and unperturbed state in field theory has a dual description in the classical gravity. In this work we calculate the quantum information metric of a theory which is dual to a conical defect geometry and we show that it is $n$ times the one of its covering space. We also give a holographic check for our result in the gravity side. Meanwhile, it wa…
We analyse the parity-odd ("type P") surface anomalies of the energy-momentum tensor correlators in conformal field theories, with an emphasis on d=4 and d=3 dimensional spacetimes. Using cohomology analysis we construct the expression for the most general P-type surface trace anomaly on a singular 2-dimensional surface in 4-dimensional bulk spacetimes. As an important example, we specialise to the case when the singular surface is a conical defect and show that the bulk P-type Pontryagin trace anomaly induces such a surface trace anomaly. We show that this conical type P surface trace anomaly…
Recently we have shown [1604.08812] how to formulate a thermodynamic first law for a single (charged) accelerated black hole in AdS space by fixing the conical deficit angles present in the spacetime. Here we show how to generalise this result, formulating thermodynamics for black holes with varying conical deficits. We derive a new potential for the varying tension defects: the "thermodynamic length", both for accelerating and static black holes. We discuss possible physical processes in which the tension of a string ending on a black hole might vary, and also map out the thermodynamic phase …
In this note we demonstrate that, as we conjectured earlier in [1], the a-charge in the conformal anomaly in dimension $d=2n$ manifests in a $n$-point correlation function of energy momentum tensor of a CFT considered in flat spacetime with a conical defect. We consider in detail dimensions $d=2,\, 4,\, 6$ and give a general formula for arbitrary $n$.
The geodesics prescription in holographic approach in Lorentzian signature is valid only for geodesics which connect spacelike-separated points at the boundary, since there are no timelike geodesics which reach the boundary. There is also no straightforward analytic Euclidean continuation for a general background, such as e. g. moving particle in AdS. We propose an improved geodesic image method for two-point Lorentzian correlators which is valid for arbitrary time intervals in case of the bulk spacetime deformed by point particles. We illustrate that our prescription is consistent with the ca…
We study instant conformal symmetry breaking as a holographic effect of ultrarelativistic particles moving in the AdS3 spacetime. We give the qualitative picture of this effect probing it by two-point correlation functions and the entanglement entropy of the corresponding boundary theory. We show that within geodesic approximation the ultra-relativistic massless defect due to gravitational lensing of the geodesics, produces a zone structure for correlators with broken conformal invariance. Meanwhile, the holographic entanglement entropy also exhibits a transition to the non-conformal behaviour…
We explore the new technique developed recently in \cite{Rosenhaus:2014woa} and suggest a correspondence between the $N$-point correlation functions on spacetime with conical defects and the $(N+1)$-point correlation functions in regular Minkowski spacetime. This correspondence suggests a new systematic way to evaluate the correlation functions on spacetimes with conical defects. We check the correspondence for the expectation value of a scalar operator and of the energy momentum tensor in a conformal field theory and obtain the exact agreement with the earlier derivations for cosmic string sp…
We study correlation functions of scalar operators on the boundary of the $AdS_3$ space deformed by moving massive particles in the context of the AdS/CFT duality. To calculate two-point correlation functions we use the geodesic approximation and the renormalized image method. We compare results of the renormalized image method with direct calculations using tracing of winding geodesics around the cone singularities, and show on examples that they are equivalent. We demonstrate that in the geodesic approximation the correlators exhibit a zone structure. This structure substantially depends on …
In this paper, we study the holographic descriptions of the conformal block of heavy operators in two-dimensional large c conformal field theory. We consider the case that the operators are pairwise inserted such that the distance between the operators in a pair is much smaller than the others. In this case, each pair of heavy operators creates a conical defect in the bulk. We propose that the conformal block is dual to the on-shell action of three dimensional geometry with conical defects in the semi-classical limit. We show that the variation of the on-shell action with respect to the conica…
We study codimension-even conical defects that contain a deficit solid angle around each point along the defect. We show that they lead to a delta function contribution to the Lovelock scalar and we compute the contribution by two methods. We then show that these codimension-even defects appear as Euclidean brane solutions in higher dimensional topological AdS gravity which is Lovelock-Chern-Simons gravity without torsion. The theory possesses a holographic Weyl anomaly that is purely of type-A and proportional to the Lovelock scalar. Using the formula for the defect contribution, we prove a h…
We analyze the screening of an external Coulomb charge in gapless graphene cone, which is taken as a prototype of a topological defect. In the subcritical regime, the induced charge is calculated using both the Green's function and the Friedel sum rule. The dependence of the polarization charge on the Coulomb strength obtained from the Green's function clearly shows the effect of the conical defect and indicates that the critical charge itself depends on the sample topology. Similar analysis using the Friedel sum rule indicates that the two results agree for low values of the Coulomb charge bu…
We present the holographic computation of the boundary two-point correlator using the GKPW prescription for a scalar field in the AdS$_3$ space with a conical defect. Generally speaking, a conical defect breaks conformal invariance in the dual theory, however we calculate the classical Green functions for a scalar field in the bulk with conical defect and use them to compute the two-point correlator in the boundary theory. We compare the obtained general expression with previous studies based on the geodesic approximation. They are in good agreement for short correlators, and main discrepancy …
We study gravity on an infinitely thin codimension-2 brane world, with purely conical singularities and in the presence of an induced gravity term on the brane. We show that in this approximation, the energy momentum tensor of the bulk is strongly related to the energy momentum tensor of the brane and thus the gravity dynamics on the brane are induced by the bulk content. This is in contrast with the gravity dynamics on a codimension-1 brane. We show how this strong result is relaxed after including a Gauss-Bonnet term in the bulk.
We introduce a new set of chemical variables for the accelerating black hole. We show how these expressions suggest that conical defects emerging from a black hole can be considered as true hair -- a new charge that the black hole can carry -- and discuss the impact of conical deficits on black hole thermodynamics from this `chemical' perspective. We conclude by proving a new {\it Reverse Isoperimetric Inequality} for black holes with conical defects.
We investigate the vacuum polarization effects associated with a charged massless spin-1/2 field in a higher-dimensional space-time, induced by a composite topological defect. The defect is constituted by a global monopole living on a three-brane and two-dimensional conical space transverse to the latter. In addition, we assume the presence of an extra magnetic flux along the core of the conical space. The heat kernel and the Feynman Green function are presented in the form of a sum of two terms. The first one corresponds to the contribution coming from the bulk with global monopole in the abs…
We present a closed form expression for the semiclassical OPE coefficients that are universal for all 2D CFTs with a "weak" light spectrum, by taking the semiclassical limit of the fusion kernel. We match this with a properly regularized and normalized bulk action evaluated on a geometry with three conical defects, analytically continued in the deficit angles beyond the range for which a metric with positive signature exists. The analytically continued geometry has a codimension-one coordinate singularity surrounding the heaviest conical defect. This singularity becomes a horizon after Wick ro…
In this note we present a solution of $N=4,d=7$ gauged supergravity which is holographically dual to a co-dimension two defect living in a six dimensional SCFT. The solution is obtained by double analytic continuation of a two charge supersymmetric black hole solution. The condition that no conical deficits are present in the bulk and on the boundary is satisfied by a one parameter family of solutions for which some holographic observables are computed.
We model the back-reaction of a static observer in four-dimensional de Sitter spacetime by means of a singular $\mathbb Z_q$ quotient. The set of fixed points of the $\mathbb Z_q$ action consists of a pair of codimension two minimal surfaces given by 2-spheres in the Euclidean geometry. The introduction of an orbifold parameter $q>1$ permits the construction of an effective action for the bulk gravity theory with support on each of these minimal surfaces. The effective action corresponds to that of Liouville field theory on a 2-sphere with a finite vacuum expectation value of the Liouville fie…
A conical defect in (2+1) anti-de Sitter space is a BTZ solution with a negative mass parameter. This is a naked singularity, but a rather harmless one: it is a point particle. Naturally, the energy density and the spacetime curvature have a delta-like singularity at the apex of the conical defect, but that doesn't give rise to any unphysical situations. Since the conical solution implies the presence of a source, applying reverse enginnering, one can identify the coupling term that is required in the action to account for that source. In that way, a relation is established between the identif…
We discuss the quantization and holographic aspects of a class of conical spaces in 2+1 dimensional pure AdS gravity. These appear as topological solitons in the Chern-Simons formulation of the theory and are closely related to the recently studied conical solutions in higher spin gravity. We discuss the classical fluctuations around these solutions, which form exceptional coadjoint orbits of the asymptotic Virasoro group. We argue that the quantization of these solutions leads to nonunitary representations of the Virasoro algebra, on account of their having boundary graviton fluctuations whic…
An earlier contour expression for the Green function of a free complex scalar field in the presence of a conical singularity with localised magnetic flux is shown to yield expressions for the field correlator and defect block expansions that have been more recently found in connection with monodromy defects in conformal field theory. The Green function appears as the Picard integral representation of the Appell $F_1$ function. This is shown to transform into a confluent Horn function, corresponding to a different defect block expansion. Other transformations are discussed.
A large class of two-dimensional dilaton-gravity theories in asymptotically AdS$_2$ spacetimes are holographically dual to a matrix integral, interpreted as an ensemble average over Hamiltonians. Viewing these theories as Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity with a gas of defects, we extend this duality to a broader class of dilaton potentials compared to previous work by including conical defects with small deficit angles. In order to do this we show that these theories are equal to the large $p$ limit of a natural deformation of the $(2,p)$ minimal string theory.
We analyze the gravity-induced effects associated with a massless scalar field in a higher-dimensional spacetime being the tensor product of $(d-n)$-dimensional Minkowski space and $n$-dimensional spherically/cylindrically-symmetric space with a solid/planar angle deficit. These spacetimes are considered as simple models for a multidimensional global monopole (if \mbox{$n\geqslant 3$}) or cosmic string (if $n=2$) with $(d-n-1)$ flat extra dimensions. Thus, we refer to them as conical backgrounds. In terms of the angular deficit value, we derive the perturbative expression for the scalar Green'…
We define an infinite class of integrable theories with a defect which are formulated as chiral defect perturbations of a conformal field theory. Such theories can be interacting in the bulk, and are purely transmitting through the defect. The examples of the sine-Gordon theory and Ising model are worked out in some detail.
Thin gravitating defects with conical singularities in higher codimensions and with generalized Israel matching conditions are known to be inconsistent for generic energy-momentum. A way to remove this inconsistency is proposed and is realized for an axially symmetric gravitating codimension-two defect in six dimensional Einstein gravity. By varying with respect to the brane embedding fields, alternative matching conditions are derived, which are generalizations of the Nambu-Goto equations of motion of the defect, consistent with bulk gravity. For a maximally symmetric defect the standard pict…
We study the Hayward term describing corners in the boundary of the geometry in the context of the Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity. These corners naturally arise in the computation of Hartle-Hawking wave functionals and reduced density matrices, and give origin to AdS spacetimes with conical defects. This set up constitutes a lab to manifestly realize many aspects of the construction recently proposed in \cite{Botta2020}. In particular, it can be shown that the Hayward term is required to reproduce the flat spectrum of Rényi entropies in the Fursaev's derivation, and furthermore, the action with an …
We explore topological defects in the 4-dimensional pure $\mathbb{Z}_2$ lattice gauge theory. This theory has 1-form $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ center symmetry as well as the Kramers-Wannier-Wegner (KWW) duality. We construct the KWW duality topological defects in the similar way to that constructed by Aasen, Mong, Fendley arXiv:1601.07185 for the 2-dimensional Ising model. These duality defects turn out to be non-invertible. We also construct the 1-form $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ symmetry defects as well as the junctions among KWW duality defects and 1-form $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ center symmetry defects. The crossing …
We compute the exact partition function on the branched two-sphere by the localization technique. It is found that it does not depend on a branching parameter q, which means that supersymmetric Rényi entropy defined by utilizing it is equivalent to the usual entanglement entropy. We also provide the interpretation of the conical singularities on the branched sphere as defects sit on the poles of the nonsingular two-sphere.
We study the spectrum of pure massless higher spin theories in $AdS_3$. The light spectrum is given by a tower of massless particles of spin $s=2,\cdots,N$ and their multi-particles states. Their contribution to the torus partition function organises into the vacuum character of the ${\cal W}_N$ algebra. Modular invariance puts constraints on the heavy spectrum of the theory, and in particular leads to negative norm states, which would be inconsistent with unitarity. This negativity can be cured by including additional light states, below the black hole threshold but whose mass grows with the …
We consider string theory on $\text{AdS}_3 \times \text{S}^3 \times \mathbb{T}^4$ in the tensionless limit, with one unit of NS-NS flux. This theory is conjectured to describe the symmetric product orbifold CFT. We consider the string on different Euclidean backgrounds such as thermal $\text{AdS}_3$, the BTZ black hole, conical defects and wormhole geometries. In simple examples we compute the full string partition function. We find it to be independent of the precise bulk geometry, but only dependent on the geometry of the conformal boundary. For example, the string partition function on ther…
We study the theory of Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity with generalized dilaton potential on Euclidean two-dimensional negatively curved backgrounds. The effect of the generalized dilaton potential is to induce a conical defect on the two-dimensional manifold. We show that this theory can be written as the ordinary quantum mechanics of a charged particle on a hyperbolic disk in the presence of a constant background magnetic field plus a pure gauge Aharonov-Bohm field. This picture allows us to exactly calculate the wavefunctions and propagators of the corresponding gravitational dynamics. With this …
We show that the spectrum of conical defects in three-dimensional de Sitter space is in one-to-one correspondence with the spectrum of vertex operators in Liouville conformal field theory. The classical conformal dimensions of vertex operators are equal to the masses of the classical point particles in dS_3 that cause the conical defect. The quantum dimensions instead are shown to coincide with the mass of the Kerr-dS_3 solution computed with the Brown-York stress tensor. Therefore classical de Sitter gravity encodes the quantum properties of Liouville theory. The equality of the gravitational…
We compute the sum over flat surfaces of disc topology with arbitrary number of conical singularities. To that end, we explore and generalize a specific case of the matrix model of dually weighted graphs (DWG) proposed and solved by one of the authors, M. Staudacher and Th. Wynter. Namely, we compute the sum over quadrangulations of the disc with certain boundary conditions, with parameters controlling the number of squares (area), the length of the boundary and the coordination numbers of vertices. The vertices introduce conical defects with angle deficit given by a multiple of $π$, correspon…
