We analyse the parity-odd ("type P") surface anomalies of the energy-momentum tensor correlators in conformal field theories, with an emphasis on d=4 and d=3 dimensional spacetimes. Using cohomology analysis we construct the expression for the most general P-type surface trace anomaly on a singular 2-dimensional surface in 4-dimensional bulk spacetimes. As an important example, we specialise to the case when the singular surface is a conical defect and show that the bulk P-type Pontryagin trace anomaly induces such a surface trace anomaly. We show that this conical type P surface trace anomaly is given purely by the outer curvature tensor. In addition, we analyse parity-odd surface contact terms in energy-momentum tensor correlators in the flat spacetime induced by the conical defect by studying two special cases in which the contact terms are induced by, (1) type P trace anomaly in d=4 and, (2) gravitational Chern-Simons Lagrangian term in d=3 spacetime dimensions. In both cases we show that the surface contact terms appear in correlators of the lower rank than the corresponding bulk surface terms.
When M-theory is compactified on G_2-holonomy manifolds with conical singularities, charged chiral fermions are present and the low-energy four-dimensional theory is potentially anomalous. We reconsider the issue of anomaly cancellation, first studied by Witten. We propose a mechanism that provides local cancellation of all gauge and mixed gauge-gravitational anomalies, i.e. separately for each conical singularity. It is similar in spirit to the one used to cancel the normal bundle anomaly in the presence of five-branes. It involves smoothly cutting off all fields close to the conical singular…
We present an alternative derivation of the parity anomaly for a massless Dirac field in 2+1 dimensions coupled to a gauge field. The anomaly functional, a Chern-Simons action for the gauge field, is obtained from the non-trivial Jacobian corresponding to a non local symmetry of the Pauli-Villars regularized action. That Jacobian is well-defined, finite, and yields the standard Chern-Simons term when the cutoff tends to infinity.
We review the construction of the adiabatic expansion for Bose and Fermi systems and show how it may be used to explore the chiral and parity anomalies for Dirac fermions without the need to compute Feynman diagrams.
Two closely related topological phenomena are studied at finite density and temperature. These are chiral anomaly and Chern-Simons term. By using different methods it is shown that $μ^2 = m^2$ is the crucial point for Chern-Simons at zero temperature. So when $μ^2 < m^2$ $μ$--influence disappears and we get the usual Chern-Simons term. On the other hand when $μ^2 > m^2$ the Chern-Simons term vanishes because of non-zero density of background fermions. It is occurs that the chiral anomaly doesn't depend on density and temperature. The connection between parity anomalous Chern-Simons and chiral …
We investigate the constraints imposed by global gravitational anomalies on parity odd induced transport coefficients in even dimensions for theories with chiral fermions, gravitinos and self dual tensors. The $η$-invariant for the large diffeomorphism corresponding to the $T$ transformation on a torus constraints the coefficients in the thermal effective action up to mod 2. We show that the result obtained for the parity odd transport for gravitinos using global anomaly matching is consistent with the direct perturbative calculation. In $d=6$ we see that the second Pontryagin class in the ano…
In a theory of a Dirac fermion field coupled to a metric-axial-tensor (MAT) background, using a Schwinger-DeWitt heat kernel technique, we compute non-perturbatively the two (odd parity) trace anomalies. A suitable collapsing limit of this model corresponds to a theory of chiral fermions coupled to (ordinary) gravity. Taking this limit on the two computed trace anomalies we verify that they tend to the same expression, which coincides with the already found odd parity trace anomaly, with the identical coefficient. This confirms our previous results on this issue.
This research demonstrates that parity violation in general relativity can simultaneously explain the observed loss in power and alignment at a preferred axis ('Axis of Evil')in the low multipole moments of the WMAP data. This observational possibility also provides an experimental window for an inflationary leptogenesis mechanism arising from large-scale parity violation. A velocity dependent potential is induced from gravitational backreaction, which modifies the primordial scalar angular power spectrum of density perturbations in the CMB. This modification suppresses power of odd parity mul…
't Hooft anomaly matching is powerful for constraining the low energy phases of gauge theories. In 3d one common anomaly is the parity anomaly in a $T$-symmetric theory where one cannot gauge the global symmetry group without breaking the time-reversal symmetry. We find that a $T$-symmetric $\text{SU}(N)$ gauge theory with either fermionic or bosonic matter in the fundamental representation of the gauge group has a parity anomaly between the flavor group and $T$-symmetry provided that there is also a massless Majorana fermion in the adjoint representation of the gauge group. We then analyze th…
Little Higgs theories often rely on an internal parity ("T-parity'') to suppress non-standard electroweak effects or to provide a dark matter candidate. We show that such a symmetry is generally broken by anomalies, as described by the Wess-Zumino-Witten term. We study a simple SU(3) x SU(3)/SU(3) Little Higgs scheme where we obtain a minimal form for the topological interactions of a single Higgs field. The results apply to more general models, including [SU(3) x SU(3)/SU(3)]^4, SU(5)/SO(5), and SU(6)/Sp(6).
We consider gauge models in the causal approach and study one-loop contributions to the chronological products and the anomalies they produce. We prove that in order greater than 4 there are no one-loop anomalies. Next we analyze one-loop anomalies in the second and third order of the perturbation theory. We prove that the even parity contributions (with respect to parity) do not produce anomalies; for the odd parity contributions we reobtain the well-known result.
We study the response of a class of topological systems to electromagnetic and gravitational sources, including torsion and curvature. By using the technology of anomaly polynomials, we derive the parity-odd response of a massive Dirac fermion in $d=2+1$ and $d=4+1$, which provides a simple model for a topological insulator. We discuss the covariant anomalies of the corresponding edge states, from a Callan-Harvey anomaly-inflow, as well as a Hamiltonian spectral flow point of view. We also discuss the applicability of our results to other systems such as Weyl semi-metals. Finally, using dimens…
The dynamics of chiral p-forms can be captured by a lower-dimensional parity-violating action motivated by a Kaluza-Klein reduction on a circle. The massless modes are (p-1)-forms with standard kinetic terms and Chern-Simons couplings to the Kaluza-Klein vector of the background metric. The massive modes are p-forms charged under the Kaluza-Klein vector and admit parity-odd first-order kinetic terms. Gauge invariance is implemented by a Stueckelberg-like mechanism using (p-1)-forms. A Chern-Simons term for the Kaluza-Klein vector is generated at one loop by massive p-form modes. These findings…
I discuss how instanton effects can be wiped-out due to the existence of anomalies. I first consider Compact Quantum Electrodynamics in 3 dimensions where confinement of electric charge is destroyed when fermions are added so that a Chern-Simons term is generated as a one-loop effect. I also show that a similar phenomenon occurs in the two-dimensional abelian chiral Higgs model. In both cases anomalies (parity anomaly, gauge anomaly) are responsible of the deconfinement mechanism.
Motivated by questions about quantum information and classification of quantum field theories, we consider Conformal Field Theories (CFTs) in spacetime dimension $d\geq 5$ with a conformally-invariant spatial boundary (BCFTs) or $4$-dimensional conformal defect (DCFTs). We determine the boundary or defect contribution to the Weyl anomaly using the standard algorithm, which includes imposing Wess-Zumino consistency and fixing finite counterterms. These boundary/defect contributions are built from the intrinsic and extrinsic curvatures, as well as the pullback of the ambient CFT's Weyl tensor. F…
We review the E(8) model of the M-theory 3-form and its applications to anomaly cancellation, Gauss laws, quantization of Page charge, and the 5-brane partition function. We discuss the potentially problematic behavior of the model under parity.
We derive effective actions for parity-violating fluids in both $(3+1)$ and $(2+1)$ dimensions, including those with anomalies. As a corollary we confirm the most general constitutive relations for such systems derived previously using other methods. We discuss in detail connections between parity-odd transport and underlying discrete symmetries. In (3+1) dimensions we elucidate connections between anomalous transport coefficients and global anomalies, and clarify a previous puzzle concerning transports and local gravitational anomalies.
We study the trace and chiral anomalies of Weyl fermions in a non-abelian gauge background in four dimensions. Using a Pauli-Villars regularization we identify the trace anomaly, proving that it can be cast in a gauge invariant form, even in the presence of the non-abelian chiral anomaly, that we rederive to check the consistency of our methods. In particular, we find that the trace anomaly does not contain any parity-odd topological contribution, whose presence has been debated in the recent literature.
We construct a weakly coupled, renormalizable ultraviolet completion of the Littlest Higgs model with T-parity (LHT), based on an SU(5)xSU(2)xU(1) gauge theory with a discrete Z_2 symmetry. Our model reproduces the complete structure of the LHT below the 10 TeV scale, including the collective symmetry breaking mechanism which solves the little hierarchy problem. The model is manifestly free of anomalies, including both gauge/gravitational anomalies and anomalies involving T-parity. At the TeV scale, the model contains additional states not present in the LHT. We estimate the impact of these st…
We consider the problem of constructing the fully gauged effective action in $2n$-dimensional space-time for Nambu-Goldstone bosons valued in a homogeneous space $G/H$, with the requirement that the action be a solution of the anomalous Ward identity and be invariant under the gauge transformations of $H$. We show that this can be done whenever the homotopy group $π_{2n}(G/H)$ is trivial, $G/H$ is reductive and $H$ is embedded in $G$ so as to be anomaly free, in particular if $H$ is an anomaly safe group. We construct the necessary generalization of the Bardeen counterterm and give explicit fo…
We compute the parity violating part of the time-dependent gravitational response function of an ideal gas of Weyl fermions up to third order in the derivative expansion and give its full tensorial structure. Our main results are two functions that parametrize the energy-momentum tensor in terms of gauge-invariant combinations of vector and tensor metric perturbations. The zero frequency limit of these functions is related with the anomalous constitutive relations and with the full anomalous partition function in the presence of gauge and mixed anomalies. In particular, our results imply the e…
Gauge invariant topological interactions, such as the D=5 Chern-Simons terms, are required in models in extra dimensions that split anomaly free representations. The Chern-Simons term is necessary to maintain the overall anomaly cancellations of the theory, but it can have significant, observable, physical effects. The CS-term locks the KK-mode parity to the parity of space-time, leaving a single parity symmetry. It leads to new processes amongst KK-modes, eg, the decay of a KK-mode to a 2-body final state of KK-modes. A formalism for the effective interaction amongst KK-modes is constructed, …
The constraints imposed on hydrodynamics by the structure of gauge and gravitational anomalies are studied in two dimensions. By explicit integration of the consistent gravitational anomaly, we derive the equilibrium partition function at second derivative order. This partition function is then used to compute the parity-violating part of the covariant energy-momentum tensor and the transport coefficients.
We classify the trace anomaly for parity-invariant non-relativistic Schrödinger theories in 2+1 dimensions coupled to background Newton-Cartan gravity. The general anomaly structure looks very different from the one in the z=2 Lifshitz theories. The type A content of the anomaly is remarkably identical to that of the relativistic 3+1 dimensional case, suggesting the conjecture that an a-theorem should exist also in the Newton-Cartan context. Erratum: due to an overcounting of the number of linearly-independent terms in the basis, the type A anomaly disappears if Frobenius condition is imposed.…

For Chern-Simons-matter theories in three dimensions, gauge invariance may require the Chern-Simons level k to be half-integral, in which case parity is violated. As noted by Pasquetti for abelian theories with N=2 supersymmetry, the partition function on the ellipsoid also admits a suitable holomorphic factorization precisely when the value of k is properly quantized. Using known formulas for the partition function, we investigate analytic aspects of this factorization for non-abelian gauge groups and general matter representations. We verify that factorization occurs in accord with the parit…
We study 't Hooft anomalies for a global discrete internal symmetry G. We construct examples of bosonic field theories in three dimensions with a non-vanishing 't Hooft anomaly for a discrete global symmetry. We also construct field theories in three dimensions with a global discrete internal symmetry G_1 x G_2 such that gauging G_1 necessarily breaks G_2 and vice versa. This is analogous to the Adler-Bell-Jackiw axial anomaly in four dimensions and parity anomaly in three dimensions.
We study parity odd transport at second order in derivative expansion for a non-conformal charged fluid. We see that there are 27 parity odd transport coefficients, of which 12 are non-vanishing in equilibrium. We use the equilibrium partition function method to express 7 of these in terms of the anomaly, shear viscosity, charge diffusivity and thermodynamic functions. The remaining 5 are constrained by 3 relations which also involve the anomaly. We derive Kubo formulae for 2 of the transport coefficients and show these agree with that derived from the equilibrium partition function.
We derive the complete $(curvature)^2$ terms of effective D-brane actions, for arbitrary ambient geometries and world-volume embeddings, at lowest order (disk-level) in the string-loop expansion. These terms reproduce the $o(α'^2)$ corrections to string scattering amplitudes, and are consistent with duality conjectures. In the particular case of the D3-brane with trivial normal bundle, considerations of $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ invariance lead to a complete sum of D-instanton corrections for both the parity-conserving and the parity-violating parts of the effective action. These corrections are requ…
We study the transport properties of topological insulators, encoding them in a generating functional of gauge and gravitational sources. Much of our focus is on the simple example of a free massive Dirac fermion, the so-called Chern insulator, especially in 2+1 dimensions. In such cases, when parity and time-reversal symmetry are broken, it is necessary to consider the gravitational sources to include a frame and an independent spin connection with torsion. In 2+1 dimensions, the simplest parity-odd response is the Hall viscosity. We compute the Hall viscosity of the Chern insulator using a c…
A relation between the conformal anomaly and the logarithmic term in the entanglement entropy is known to exist for CFT's in even dimensions. In odd dimensions the local anomaly and the logarithmic term in the entropy are absent. As was observed recently, there exists a non-trivial integrated anomaly if an odd-dimensional spacetime has boundaries. We show that, similarly, there exists a logarithmic term in the entanglement entropy when the entangling surface crosses the boundary of spacetime. The relation of the entanglement entropy to the integrated conformal anomaly is elaborated for three-d…
The effective gauge field actions generated by charged fermions in $QED_3$ and $QCD_3$ can be made invariant under both small and large gauge transformations at any temperature by suitable regularization of the Dirac operator determinant, at the price of parity anomalies. We resolve the paradox that the perturbative expansion is not invariant, as manifested by the temperature dependence of the induced Chern-Simons term, by showing that large (unlike small) transformations and hence their Ward identities, are not perturbative order-preserving. Our results are illustrated through concrete exampl…
This article deals with two main topics. One is odd parity trace anomalies in Weyl fermion theories in a 4d curved background, the second is the introduction of axial gravity. The motivation for reconsidering the former is to clarify the theoretical background underlying the approach and complete the calculation of the anomaly. The reference is in particular to the difference between Weyl and massless Majorana fermions and to the possible contributions from tadpole and seagull terms in the Feynman diagram approach. A first, basic, result of this paper is that a more thorough treatment, taking …
Being motivated by applications to the physics of Weyl semimetals we study spectral geometry of Dirac operator with an abelian gauge field and an axial vector field. We impose chiral bag boundary conditions with variable chiral phase $θ$ on the fermions. We establish main properties of the spectral functions which ensure applicability of the $ζ$ function regularization and of the usual heat kernel formulae for chiral and parity anomalies. We develop computational methods, including a perturbation expansion for the heat kernel. We show that the terms in both anomalies which include electromagne…
Recently, general methods of bosonization beyond 1+1 dimensions have been developed. In this article, we review these bosonizations and extend them to the case with boundary conditions. In particular, we study the case when the bulk theory is a $G$-symmetry protected topological phase and the boundary theory has a $G$ 't Hooft anomaly. We discuss how, when the anomaly is not realizable in a bosonic system, the $G$ symmetry algebra becomes modified in the bosonization of the anomalous theory. This gives us a useful tool for understanding anomalies of fermionic systems, since there is no way to …
Cosmological observations on the largest scales exhibit a solid record of unexpected anomalies and alignments, apparently pointing towards a large scale violation of statistical isotropy. These include a variety of CMB measurements, as well as alignments of quasar polarisation vectors. In this paper we explore the possibility that several of the aforementioned large scale correlations are in fact not independent, and can be understood in a coherent way within the framework of a parity odd local Universe, and ultimately related to the nature of Dark Energy and its interactions with light.
We analyze and give explicit representations for the effective abelian vector gauge field actions generated by charged fermions with particular attention to the thermal regime in odd dimensions, where spectral asymmetry can be present. We show, through $ζ-$function regularization, that both small and large gauge invariances are preserved at any temperature and for any number of fermions at the usual price of anomalies: helicity/parity invariance will be lost in even/odd dimensions, and in the latter even at zero mass. Gauge invariance dictates a very general ``Fourier'' representation of the a…
We study the consistency of orbifold field theories and clarify to what extent the condition of having an anomaly-free spectrum of zero-modes is sufficient to guarantee it. Preservation of gauge invariance at the quantum level is possible, although at the price, in general, of introducing operators that break the 5d local parity. These operators are, however, perfectly consistent with the orbifold projection. We also clarify the relation between localized Fayet-Iliopoulos (FI) terms and anomalies. These terms can be consistently added, breaking neither local supersymmetry nor the gauge symmetr…
In odd dimensions the lattice overlap formalism is simpler than in even dimensions. Masslessness of fermions can still be preserved without fine tuning and gauge invariance without gauge averaging can be maintained, although, sometimes, only at the expense of parity invariance. When parity invariance is enforced invariance under small gauge transformations can be maintained and continuum global gauge anomalies are reproduced.
In this paper we consider gravitational parity anomaly in three and four dimensions. We start with a re-computation of this anomaly on a 3D manifold without boundaries and with a critical comparison of our results to the previous calculations. Then we compute the anomaly on 4D manifolds with boundaries with local bag boundary conditions. We find, that gravitational parity anomaly is localized on the boundary and contains a gravitational Chern-Simons terms together with a term depending of the extrinsic curvature. We also discuss the main properties of the anomaly, as the conformal invariance, …
The 6d $\mathcal{N}=(2,0)$ theory has natural surface operator observables, which are akin in many ways to Wilson loops in gauge theories. We propose a definition of a "locally BPS" surface operator and study its conformal anomalies, the analog of the conformal dimension of local operators. We study the abelian theory and the holographic dual of the large $N$ theory refining previously used techniques. Introducing non-constant couplings to the scalar fields allows for an extra anomaly coefficient, which we find in both cases to be related to one of the geometrical anomaly coefficients, suggest…
In this paper, we discuss relativistic hydrodynamics for a massless Dirac fermion in $(2+1)$ dimensions, which has the parity anomaly -- a global 't Hooft anomaly between $\mathrm{U}(1)$ and parity symmetries. We investigate how hydrodynamics implements the party anomaly, particularly focusing on the transport phenomena at the boundary. Based on the parity anomaly matching and the second law of local thermodynamics, we find $\mathrm{U}(1)$ and entropy currents localized at the boundary as well as the bulk anomalous current with vanishing divergence. These edge currents are similar to the $(1+1…
We consider the two-point functions of conserved bulk currents and energy-momentum tensor in a boundary CFT defined on $\mathbb{R}_-^{1,2}$. Starting from the consistent forms of boundary gauge and gravitational anomalies we derive their respective contributions to the correlation functions in the form of anomalous Ward identities. Using the recently developed momentum space formalism we find an anomalous solution to each of these identities depending on a single undetermined form-factor. We study the solution in two different kinematic limits corresponding to small and large momentum $p_n$, p…
We develop a theory of anomalies of fermionic topological phases of matter in (2+1)D with a general fermionic symmetry group $G_f$. In general, $G_f$ can be a non-trivial central extension of the bosonic symmetry group $G_b$ by fermion parity $(-1)^F$. We encounter four layers of obstructions to gauging the $G_f$ symmetry, which we dub the anomaly cascade: (i) An $\mathcal{H}^1(G_b,\mathbb{Z}_{\bf T})$ obstruction to extending the symmetry permutations on the anyons to the fermion parity gauged theory, (ii) An $\mathcal{H}^2(G_b, \ker r)$ obstruction to extending the $G_b$ group structure of t…
We evaluate the contribution of chiral fermions in $d=2, 4, 6$, chiral bosons, a chiral gravitino like theory in $d=2$ and chiral gravitinos in $d=6$ to all the leading parity odd transport coefficients at one loop. This is done by using finite temperature field theory to evaluate the relevant Kubo formulae. For chiral fermions and chiral bosons the relation between the parity odd transport coefficient and the microscopic anomalies including gravitational anomalies agree with that found by using the general methods of hydrodynamics and the argument involving the consistency of the Euclidean va…
We study entanglement entropy for parity-violating (time-reversal breaking) quantum field theories on $\mathbb{R}^{1,2}$ in the presence of a domain wall between two distinct parity-odd phases. The domain wall hosts a 1+1-dimensional conformal field theory (CFT) with non-trivial chiral central charge. Such a CFT possesses gravitational anomalies. It has been shown recently that, as a consequence, its intrinsic entanglement entropy is sensitive to Lorentz boosts around the entangling surface. Here, we show using various methods that the entanglement entropy of the three-dimensional bulk theory …
Bulk matter modes of higher dimensional models generically become unstable in the presence of additional matter multiplets at the branes. This quantum instability is driven by localized Fayet-Iliopoulos terms that attract the bulk zero modes towards the boundary branes. We study this mechanism in the framework of a 5 dimensional S^1/Z_2 orbifold and give conditions for the various possibilities of localization of (chiral) zero modes. This mechanism is quite relevant for realistic model building, as the standard model contains U(1) hypercharge with potentially localized FI-terms. The analysis i…
In a Hamiltonian approach to anomalies parity and time reversal symmetries can be restored by introducing suitable impure (or mixed) states. However, the expectation values of observables such as the Hamiltonian diverges in such impure states. Here we show that such divergent expectation values can be treated within a renormalization group framework, leading to a set of $β$-functions in the moduli space of the operators representing the observables. This leads to well defined expectation values of the Hamiltonian in a phase where the impure state restores the $P$ and $T$ symmetry. We also show…
The classification of topological phases of matter in the presence of interactions is an area of intense interest. One possible means of classification is via studying the partition function under modular transforms, as the presence of an anomalous phase arising in the edge theory of a D-dimensional system under modular transformation, or modular anomaly, signals the presence of a (D+1)-D non-trivial bulk. In this work, we discuss the modular transformations of conformal field theories along a (2+1)-D and a (3+1)-D edge. Using both analytical and numerical methods, we show that chiral complex …
