We consider a random walk $S_k$ with i.i.d. steps on a compact group equipped with a bi-invariant metric. We prove quantitative ergodic theorems for the sum $\sum_{k=1}^N f(S_k)$ with Hölder continuous test functions $f$, including the central limit theorem, the law of the iterated logarithm and an almost sure approximation by a Wiener process, provided the distribution of $S_k$ converges to the Haar measure in the $p$-Wasserstein metric fast enough. As an example we construct discrete random walks on an irrational lattice on the torus $\mathbb{R}^d/\mathbb{Z}^d$, and find their precise rate of convergence to uniformity in the $p$-Wasserstein metric. The proof uses a new Berry--Esseen type inequality for the $p$-Wasserstein metric on the torus, and the simultaneous Diophantine approximation properties of the lattice. These results complement the first part of this paper on random walks with an absolutely continuous component and quantitative ergodic theorems for Borel measurable test functions.
Let $X_1, X_2, \dots$ be independent, identically distributed random variables taking values from a compact metrizable group $G$. We prove that the random walk $S_k=X_1 X_2 \cdots X_k$, $k=1,2,\dots$ equidistributes in any given Borel subset of $G$ with probability $1$ if and only if $X_1$ is not supported on any proper closed subgroup of $G$, and $S_k$ has an absolutely continuous component for some $k \ge 1$. More generally, the sum $\sum_{k=1}^N f(S_k)$, where $f:G \to \mathbb{R}$ is Borel measurable, is shown to satisfy the strong law of large numbers and the law of the iterated logarithm.…
We construct a coupling between the random walk composed of Lévy area increments from a $d$-dimensional Brownian motion and a random walk composed of quadratic polynomials of Gaussian random variables. This coupling construction is used to produce a new pathwise approximation scheme for stochastic differential equations in the preprint [Flint-Lyons-2015]. The coupling arguments of the present paper are based extensively on the recent coupling results of Davie concerning a multidimensional variant of the Komlós-Major-Tusnády theorem and Wasserstein estimates for polynomial perturbations of Gaus…
Recently, the elephant random walk has attracted a lot of attentions. A wide range of literature is available for the asymptotic behavior of the process, such as the central limit theorems, functional limit theorems and the law of iterated logarithm. However, there is not result concerning Wassertein-1 distance for the normal approximations. In this paper, we show that the Wassertein-1 distance in the central limit theorem is totally different when a memory parameter $p$ belongs to one of the three cases $0< p < 1/2,$ $1/2< p<3/4$ and $p=3/4.$
Let $G$ be a real Lie group, $Λ\subseteq G$ a lattice, and $X=G/Λ$. We fix a probability measure $μ$ on $G$ and consider the left random walk induced on $X$. It is assumed that $μ$ is aperiodic, has a finite first moment, spans a semisimple algebraic group without compact factors, and has two non mutually singular convolution powers. We show that for every starting point $x\in X$, the $n$-th step distribution $μ^n*δ_{x}$ of the walk weak-$\ast$ converges toward some homogeneous probability measure on $X$.
We prove a sharp general inequality estimating the distance of two probability measures on a compact Lie group in the Wasserstein metric in terms of their Fourier transforms. We use a generalized form of the Wasserstein metric, related by Kantorovich duality to the family of functions with an arbitrarily prescribed modulus of continuity. The proof is based on smoothing with a suitable kernel, and a Fourier decay estimate for continuous functions. As a corollary, we show that the rate of convergence of random walks on semisimple groups in the Wasserstein metric is necessarily almost exponential…

Motivated by a recent work of Benoist and Quint and extending results from the PhD thesis of the third author, we obtain limit theorems for products of independent and identically distributed elements of GLd (R), such as the Marcinkiewicz-Zygmund strong law of large numbers, the CLT (with rates in Wasserstein's distances) and almost sure invariance principles with rates.
In this paper we consider a random walk of a particle in $\mathbb{R}^d$. Convergence of different transformations of trajectories of random flights with Poisson switching moments has been obtained by Davydov and Konakov, as well as diffusion approximation of the process has been built. The goal of this paper is to prove stronger convergence in terms of the Wasserstein distance. Three types of transformations are considered: cases of exponential and super-exponential growth of a switching moment transformation function are quite simple, and the result follows from the fact that the limit proces…
We study occupancy counts for the critical nearest-neighbor branching random walk on the $d$-dimensional lattice, conditioned on non-extinction. For $d\geq 3$, Lalley and Zheng (2011) showed that the properly scaled joint distribution of the number of sites occupied by $j$ generation-$n$ particles, $j=1,2,\ldots$, converges in distribution as $n$ goes to infinity, to a deterministic multiple of a single exponential random variable. The limiting exponential variable can be understood as the classical Yaglom limit of the total population size of generation $n$. Here we study the second order flu…
In this paper, we give explicit rates in the central limit theorem and in the almost sure invariance principle for general R d-valued cocycles that appear in the study of the left random walk on linear groups. Our method of proof lies on a suitable martingale approximation and on a careful estimation of some coupling coefficients linked with the underlying Markov structure. Concerning the martingale part, the available results in the literature are not accurate enough to give almost optimal rates whether in the central limit theorem for the Wasserstein distance, or in the strong approximation.…
Let $G$ be a real Lie group, $Λ\leq G$ a lattice, and $Ω=G/Λ$. We study the equidistribution properties of the left random walk on $Ω$ induced by a probability measure $μ$ on $G$. It is assumed that $μ$ has a finite first moment, and that the Zariski closure of the group generated by the support of $μ$ in the adjoint representation is semisimple without compact factors. We show that for every starting point $x\in Ω$, the $μ$-walk with origin $x$ has no escape of mass, and equidistributes in Cesàro averages toward some homogeneous measure. This extends several fundamental results due to Benoist…
In this paper, we consider a generalization of the elephant random walk model. Compared to the usual elephant random walk, an interesting feature of this model is that the step sizes form a sequence of positive independent and identically distributed random variables instead of a fixed constant. For this model, we establish the law of the iterated logarithm, the central limit theorem, and we obtain rates of convergence in the central limit theorem with respect to the Kologmorov, Zolotarev and Wasserstein distances. We emphasize that, even in case of the usual elephant random walk, our results …
We develop Stein's method for the half-normal distribution and apply it to derive rates of convergence in distributional limit theorems for three statistics of the simple symmetric random walk: the maximum value, the number of returns to the origin and the number of sign changes up to a given time $n$. We obtain explicit error bounds with the optimal rate $n^{-1/2}$ for both the Kolmogorov and the Wasserstein metric. In order to apply Stein's method, we compare the characterizing operator of the limiting half-normal distribution with suitable characterizations of the discrete approximating dis…
In this paper, we study in the Markovian case the rate of convergence in the Wasserstein distance of an approximation of the solution to a BSDE given by a BSDE which is driven by a scaled random walk as introduced in Briand, Delyon and M{é}min (Electron. Comm. Probab. 6(2001),1-14).
We consider a nonlinear random walk which, in each time step, is free to choose its own transition probability within a neighborhood (w.r.t. Wasserstein distance) of the transition probability of a fixed Lévy process. In analogy to the classical framework we show that, when passing from discrete to continuous time via a scaling limit, this nonlinear random walk gives rise to a nonlinear semigroup. We explicitly compute the generator of this semigroup and corresponding PDE as a perturbation of the generator of the initial Lévy process.
We consider Kac's random walk on $n$-dimensional rotation matrices, where each step is a random rotation in the plane generated by two randomly picked coordinates. We show that this process converges to the Haar measure on $\mathit{SO}(n)$ in the $L^2$ transportation cost (Wasserstein) metric in $O(n^2\ln n)$ steps. We also prove that our bound is at most a $O(\ln n)$ factor away from optimal. Previous bounds, due to Diaconis/Saloff-Coste and Pak/Sidenko, had extra powers of $n$ and held only for $L^1$ transportation cost. Our proof method includes a general result of independent interest, aki…
In this paper we study the coarse Ricci curvature on the space of probability measures on a metric space. The infimum of the $p$-coarse Ricci curvature on the $L^p$-Wasserstein space coincides with that with respect to the original random walk. Considering a random walk as a map, we investigate the relation between Gromov-Hausdorff convergence and the $p$-coarse Ricci curvature. We also study the concentration of measure phenomenon related to the coarse Ricci curvature.
The purpose of this paper is to provide an exact formula for the second moment of the empirical correlation of two independent Gaussian random walks as well as implicit formulas for higher moments. The proofs are based on a symbolically tractable integro-differential representation formula for the moments of any order in a class of empirical correlations, first established by Ernst et al. (2019) and investigated previously in Ernst et al. (2017). We also provide rates of convergence of the empirical correlation of two independent Gaussian random walks to the empirical correlation of two indepe…
We present a way to use Stein's method in order to bound the Wasserstein distance of order $2$ between two measures $ν$ and $μ$ supported on $\mathbb{R}^d$ such that $μ$ is the reversible measure of a diffusion process. In order to apply our result, we only require to have access to a stochastic process $(X_t)_{t \geq 0}$ such that $X_t$ is drawn from $ν$ for any $t > 0$. We then show that, whenever $μ$ is the Gaussian measure $γ$, one can use a slightly different approach to bound the Wasserstein distances of order $p \geq 1$ between $ν$ and $γ$ under an additional exchangeability assumption …
