Two dimensional topological superconductors (TS) host chiral Majorana modes (MMs) localized at the boundaries. In this work, within quasiclassical approximation we study the effect of disorder on the localization length of MMs in two dimensional spin-orbit (SO) coupled superconductors. We find nonmonotonic behavior of the Majorana localization length as a function of disorder strength. At weak disorder, the Majorana localization length decreases with an increasing disorder strength. Decreasing the disorder scattering time below a critical value $τ_c$, the Majorana localization length starts to increase. The critical scattering time depends on the relative magnitudes of the two ingredients behind TS: SO coupling and exchange field. For dominating SO coupling, $τ_c$ is small and vice versa for the dominating exchange field.
We develop a theory based on the formalism of quasiclassical Green's functions to study the spin dynamics in superfluid $^3$He. First, we derive kinetic equations for the spin-dependent distribution function in the bulk superfluid reproducing the results obtained earlier without quasiclassical approximation. Then we consider a spin dynamics near the surface of fully gapped $^3$He-B phase taking into account spin relaxation due to the transitions in the spectrum of localized fermionic states. The lifetime of longitudinal and transverse spin waves is calculate taking into account the Fermi-liqui…
The charging effect of a superconducting vortex core is very important for transport properties of superconducting vortices. The chiral p-wave superconductor, known as a topological superconductor (SC), has a Majorana fermion in a vortex core and the charging effect has been studied using microscopic Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) theory. According to calculations based on the BdG theory, one type of the vortex is charged as well as the vortex of the s-wave SC, while the other is uncharged. We reproduce this interesting charging effect using an augmented quasiclassical theory in chiral p-wave SCs,…
We use the quasiclassical Eilenberger theory to study the topological superconducting proximity effects between a segment of a nanowire with a p-wave order parameter and a metallic segment. This model faithfully represents key qualitative features of an experimental setup, where only a part of a nanowire is in immediate contact with a bulk superconductor, inducing topological superconductivity. It is shown that the Eilenberger equations represent a viable alternative to the Bogoliubov-de Gennes theory of the topological superconducting heterostructures and provide a much simpler quantitative d…
We investigate the effect of correlated disorder on Majorana zero modes (MZMs) bound to magnetic vortices in two-dimensional topological superconductors. By starting from a lattice model of interacting fermions with a $p_x \pm i p_y$ superconducting ground state in the disorder-free limit, we use perturbation theory to describe the enhancement of the Majorana localization length at weak disorder and a self-consistent numerical solution to understand the breakdown of the MZMs at strong disorder. We find that correlated disorder has a much stronger effect on the MZMs than uncorrelated disorder a…
Superconducting wires with broken time-reversal and spin-rotational symmetries can exhibit two distinct topological gapped phases and host bound Majorana states at the phase boundaries. When the wire is tuned to the transition between these two phases and the gap is closed, Majorana states become delocalized leading to a peculiar critical state of the system. We study transport properties of this critical state as a function of the length $L$ of a disordered multichannel wire. Applying a non-linear supersymmetric sigma model of symmetry class D with two replicas, we identify the average conduc…
Majorana bound states are zero-energy modes localized at the ends of a one-dimensional (1D) topological superconductor. Introducing disorder usually increases the Majorana localization length, until eventually inducing a topological phase transition to a trivial phase. In this work we show that in some cases weak disorder causes the Majorana localization length to decrease, making the topological phase more robust. Increasing the disorder further eventually leads to a change of trend and to a phase transition to a trivial phase. Interestingly the transition occurs at $ξ_0\gg l$, where $l$ is t…
Motivated by the recent experimental observation of the topological Anderson insulator in disordered atomic wires based on the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model, we study disorder effects on a dimerized Kitaev superconductor chain which is regarded as the superconductor version of the SSH model. By computing the real-space winding number and the zero-bias differential conductance, we analyze the topological phase transitions occurring in a dimerized Kitaev superconductor chain with disorder. It is found that disorder can induce a topologically nontrivial superconductor phase hosting Majorana ze…
We study the decay and oscillations of Majorana fermion wavefunctions and ground state (GS) fermion parity in one-dimensional topological superconducting lattice systems. Using a Majorana transfer matrix method, we find that Majorana wavefunction properties are encoded in the associated Lyapunov exponent, which in turn is the sum of two independent components: a `superconducting component' which characterizes the gap induced decay, and the `normal component', which determines the oscillations and response to chemical potential configurations. The topological phase transition separating phases …
We study a semiconductor wire with strong spin-orbit coupling, which is proximity-coupled to a superconductor with chemical potential disorder. When tunneling at the semiconductor- superconductor interface is very weak, it is known that disorder in the superconductor does not affect the induced superconductivity nor, therefore, the effective topological superconductivity that emerges above a critical magnetic field. We demonstrate nonperturbatively how this result breaks down with stronger proximity coupling by obtaining the low-energy (i.e., subgap) excitation spectrum through direct numerica…
The quasiclassical theory in terms of equations for the Green's functions (Eilenberger equations) is generalized in order to allow for quantitative description of the magneto-electric effects and proximity-induced triplet correlations in the presence of spin-orbit coupling in hybrid superconducting systems. The formalism is valid under the condition that the spin-orbit coupling is weak with respect to the Fermi energy, but exceeds the superconducting energy scale considerably. On the basis of the derived formalism it is shown that the triplet correlations in the spin-orbit coupled normal metal…
We elucidate the reduction of the winding number (WN) caused by the onsite disorder in a higher WN next nearest neighbor XY model. When disorder becomes strong enough, Majorana edge modes become critically extended, beyond which they collapse into Anderson localized (AL) states in the bulk, resulting in a topological Anderson insulating state (TAI). We identify a resilience threshold $W_t$ for every pair of Majorana fermions (MFs). In response to increasing disorder every pair of MFs collapse into AL bulk at their resilience threshold. For very strong disorder, all Majorana fermions collapse a…
We investigate the inhomogeneous Rashba chain coupled to a superconducting substrate, hosting the Majorana quasiparticles near its edges. We discuss its subgap spectrum and study how robust are the zero-energy quasiparticles against the diagonal and off-diagonal disorder. Studying the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological invariant we show that disorder induced transition from the topologically non-trivial to trivial phases is manifested by characteristic features in the spatially-resolved quasiparticle spectrum at zero energy. We provide evidence for the non-local nature of the zero-energy Majorana quas…
Majorana zero modes are fractional quantum excitations appearing in pairs, each pair being a building block for quantum computation . Some possible signatures of these excitations have been reported as zero bias peaks at endpoints of one-dimensional semiconducting wires and magnetic chains. However, 1D systems are by nature fragile to a small amount of disorder that induces low-energy excitations, hence obtaining Majorana zero modes well isolated in a hard gap requires extremely clean systems. Two-dimensional systems offer an alternative route to get robust Majorana zero modes. Indeed, it was …
We investigate the robustness of Majorana edge modes under disorder and interactions. We exploit a recently found mapping of the interacting Kitaev chain in the symmetric region ($μ= 0$, $t = Δ$) to free fermions. Extending the exact solution to the disordered case allows us to calculate analytically the topological phase boundary for all interaction and disorder strengths, which has been thought to be only accessible numerically. We discover a regime in which moderate disorder in the interaction matrix elements enhances topological order well into the strongly interacting regime $U > t$. We a…
In this work, we investigate the effect of disorder on the topological properties of multichannel superconductor nanowires. While the standard expectation is that the spectral gap is closed and opened at transitions that change the topological index of the wire, we show that the closing and opening of a transport gap can also cause topological transitions, even in the presence of nonzero density of states across the transition. Such transport gaps induced by disorder can change the topological index, driving a topologically trivial wire into a nontrivial state or vice versa. We focus on the Ra…

We analyze the effects of electron-electron interactions and disorder on a Rashba double-nanowire setup coupled to an s-wave superconductor, which has been recently proposed as a versatile platform to generate Kramers pairs of Majorana bound states in the absence of magnetic fields. We identify the regime of parameters for which these Kramers pairs are stable against interaction and disorder effects. We use bosonization, perturbative renormalization group, and replica techniques to derive the flow equations for various parameters of the model and evaluate the corresponding phase diagram with t…
Majorana bound states (MBS) are well-established in the clean limit in chains of ferromagnetically aligned impurities deposited on conventional superconductors with finite spin-orbit coupling. Here we show that these MBS are very robust against disorder. By performing self-consistent calculations we find that the MBS are protected as long as the surrounding superconductor show no large signs of inhomogeneity. We find that longer chains offer more stability against disorder for the MBS, albeit the minigap decreases, as do increasing strengths of spin-orbit coupling and superconductivity.
Experimental and materials considerations for the topological superconducting state in electron and hole doped semiconductors: searching for non-Abelian Majorana modes in 1D nanowires and 2D heterostructures
Odd-frequency superconductivity is an exotic phase of matter in which Cooper pairing between electrons is entirely dynamical in nature. Majorana zero modes exhibit pure odd-frequency superconducting correlations due to their specific properties. Thus, by tunnel-coupling an array of Majorana zero modes to a spin-polarized wire, it is in principle possible to engineer a bulk one-dimensional odd-frequency spinless $s$-wave superconductor. We here point out that each tunnel coupling element, being dependent on a large number of material-specific parameters, is generically complex with sample varia…
Inverse proximity effect and influence of disorder on triplet supercurrents in strongly spin-polarized ferromagnets
我们讨论了强自旋极化铁磁体中的约瑟夫森效应,其中三重态相关性是通过自旋活性界面散射诱导的,扩展了我们早期的工作[Phys. Rev. Lett.
We study the Majorana bound states arising in quasi-one-dimensional systems with Rashba spin-orbit coupling in the presence of an in-plane Zeeman magnetic field. Using two different methods, first, the numerical diagonalization of the tight-binding Hamiltonian, and second, finding the singular points of the Hamiltonian (see Refs. [1-4]), we obtain the topological phase diagram for these systems as a function of the chemical potential and the magnetic field, and we demonstrate the consistency of these two methods. By introducing disorder into these systems we confirm that the states with even n…

We study the Majorana surface states of higher-spin topological superconductors (TSCs) that could be realized in ultracold atomic systems or doped semimetals with spin-orbit coupling. As a paradigmatic example, we consider a model with p-wave pairing of spin-3/2 fermions that generalizes ${}^3\text{He-}B$. This model has coexisting linear and cubic dispersing Majorana surface bands. We show that these are unstable to interactions, which can generate a spontaneous surface thermal quantum Hall effect (TQHE). By contrast, nonmagnetic quenched disorder induces a surface conformal field theory (CFT…
Majorana fermions in some model semiconductor nanowires proximity coupled with \emph{s}-wave superconductor have been investigated, as well as other intragap bound states in topological phase of a Rashba nanowire with non-uniform spin-orbit interaction (SOI). Various sources of disorder, such as disorder in semiconductor nanowire, bulk superconductor and semiconductor-superconductor interface, are included to characterize their effects on the stability of the topological phase. In the case of multiband semiconducting nanowires, the phase diagram of the system as a function of the chemical pote…
We calculate the non-reciprocal critical current and quantify the supercurrent diode effect in Rashba superconductors with arbitrary disorder, using the quasiclassical Eilenberger equation. The non-reciprocity is caused by the helical superconducting state, which appears when both inversion and time-reversal symmetries are broken. In the absence of disorder, we find a very strong diode effect, with the non-reciprocity exceeding 40% at optimal temperatures, magnetic fields and spin-orbit coupling. We establish that the effect persists even in the presence of strong disorder. We show that the si…
Qubits based on Majorana zero modes are a promising path towards topological quantum computing. Such qubits, though, are susceptible to quasiparticle poisoning which does not have to be small by topological argument. We study the main sources of the quasiparticle poisoning relevant for realistic devices -- non-equilibrium above-gap quasiparticles and equilibrium localized subgap states. Depending on the parameters of the system and the architecture of the qubit either of these sources can dominate the qubit decoherence. However, we find in contrast to naive estimates that in moderately disorde…
A Majorana box - two topological superconducting nanowires coupled via a trivial superconductor - is a building block in devices aiming to demonstrate nonabelian physics, as well as for topological quantum computer architectures. We theoretically investigate charge transport through a Majorana box and show that current can be blocked when two Majoranas couple to the same lead, fixing their parity. In direct analogy to Pauli spin blockade in spin qubits, this parity blockade can be used for fast and high-fidelity qubit initialization and readout, as well as for current-based measurements of dec…
