Majorana bound states (MBS) are well-established in the clean limit in chains of ferromagnetically aligned impurities deposited on conventional superconductors with finite spin-orbit coupling. Here we show that these MBS are very robust against disorder. By performing self-consistent calculations we find that the MBS are protected as long as the surrounding superconductor show no large signs of inhomogeneity. We find that longer chains offer more stability against disorder for the MBS, albeit the minigap decreases, as do increasing strengths of spin-orbit coupling and superconductivity.
We present a novel controllable platform for engineering Majorana zero modes. The platform consists of a ferromagnetic metallic wire placed among conventional superconductors, which are in proximity to ferromagnetic insulators. We demonstrate that Majorana zero modes emerge localised at the edges of the ferromagnetic wire, due to the interplay of the applied supercurrents and the induced by proximity exchange fields with conventional superconductivity. Our mechanism does not rely on the pairing of helical fermions by combining conventional superconductivity with spin-orbit coupling, but rather…
We study all possible Majorana modes in two-dimensional spin-orbit coupled ferromagnetic superconductor-normal state-superconductor (SNS) Josephson junctions and propose experiments to detect them. With the S region in a non-trivial topological phase and a superconducting phase difference $ϕ= π$ across the junction, two delocalized Majorana fermions with no excitation gap appear in the N region. In addition, if S and N belong to different topological phases and have well-separated the Fermi surfaces, localized Majorana fermions with a finite excitation gap also emerge at both SN interfaces for…
We propose a novel platform for the creation and manipulation of Majorana zero modes consisting of a ferromagnetic metallic wire placed between conventional superconductors which are in proximity to ferromagnetic insulators. Our device relies on the interplay of applied supercurrents and exchange fields emerging from the ferromagnetic insulators. We assert that the proposed superconductor/ferromagnet heterostructures exhibit enhanced controllability, since topological superconductivity can be tuned apart from gate voltages applied on the ferromagnetic wire, also by manipulating the applied sup…
We study the stability of the topological quantum computation proposals involving Majorana fermions against thermal fluctuations. We use a minimal realistic model of a spinless px+ipy superconductor and consider effect of excited midgap states localized in the vortex core as well as of transitions above the bulk superconducting gap on the quasiparticle braiding, interferometry-based qubit read-out schemes, and quantum coherence of the topological qubits. We find that thermal occupation of the midgap states does not affect adiabatic braiding operations but leads to a reduction in the visibility…
Recent experiments reported the puzzling zero energy modes associated with ferromagnetic impurities in some iron-based superconductors with topological band structures. Here, we show that the sufficiently strong exchange coupling between a ferromagnetic impurity and substrate can trigger a quantum phase transition, beyond which, the phase of the topological surface superconducting order parameter around the impurity acquires a sign-change. In such a case, we prove that a Kramers degenerate pair of Majorana modes can be induced at the boundary separating the two sign-change regimes and trapped …
A number of ferromagnetic superconductors have been recently discovered which are believed to be in the so-called "equal spin pairing" (ESP) state. In the ESP state the Cooper pairs condense forming order parameters $Δ_{\uparrow\uparrow}, Δ_{\downarrow\downarrow}$ which are decoupled in the spin-sector. We show that these three-dimensional systems should generically support topologically protected surface Majorana arcs and bulk Weyl fermions as gapless excitations. Similar protected low-energy exotic quasiparticles should also appear in the recently discovered non-centrosymmteric superconducto…
We consider a Josephson junction consisting of superconductor/ferromagnetic insulator (S/FI) bilayers as electrodes which proximizes a nearby 2D electron gas. By starting from a generic Josephson hybrid planar setup we present an exhaustive analysis of the the interplay between the superconducting and magnetic proximity effects and the conditions under which the structure undergoes transitions to a non-trivial topological phase. We address the 2D bound state problem using a general transfer matrix approach that reduces the problem to an effective 1D Hamiltonian. This allows for straightforward…
We consider a wire network of ferromagnetic impurities on the surface of an $s$-wave superconductor with strong Rashba spin-orbit interaction. Within the topological phase, zero-energy Majorana fermions appear at wire end-points as well as at junctions between an odd number of wire segments, while no low-energy states are present at junctions between an even number of wire segments, providing strong experimentally accessible signatures for Majorana fermions. We also investigate the quasiparticle energy gap with respect to varying the Rashba spin-orbit coupling and magnetic impurity strength.
We investigate the interplay between ferromagnetic and superconducting order at the edge of a quantum spin Hall insulator. Using complementary analytical and self-consistent numerical approaches, we study a ferromagnetic Josephson junction and show how the direct coupling between magnetism and the superconducting U(1) phase gives rise to several unusual phenomena which distinguishes the present system from its non-topological equivalent. In particular, we demonstrate how the anomalous current-phase relation triggers supercurrent-induced magnetization dynamics and also study the spatial localiz…
Majorana fermions are predicted to localize at the edge of a topological superconductor, a state of matter that can form when a ferromagnetic system is placed in proximity to a conventional superconductor with strong spin-orbit interaction. With the goal of realizing a one-dimensional topological superconductor, we have fabricated ferromagnetic iron (Fe) atomic chains on the surface of superconducting lead (Pb). Using high-resolution spectroscopic imaging techniques, we show that the onset of superconductivity, which gaps the electronic density of states in the bulk of the Fe chains, is accomp…
We relax one of the requirements for topological quantum computation with Majorana fermions. Topological quantum computation was discussed so far as manipulation of the wave function within degenerate many body ground state. The simplest particles providing degenerate ground state, Majorana fermions, often coexist with extremely low energy excitations, so keeping the system in the ground state may be hard. We show that the topological protection extends to the excited states, as long as the Majorana fermions do not interact neither directly, nor via the excited states. This protection relies o…
We propose to study the lattice-symmetry protection of Majorana zero bound modes in topological crystalline superconductors (SCs). With an induced $s$-wave superconductivity in the $(001)$-surface of the topological crystalline insulator Pb$_{1-x}$Sn$_x$Te, which has a C$_4$ rotational symmetry, we show a new class of 2D topological SC with four Majorana modes obtained in each vortex core, while only two of them are protected by the cyclic symmetry. Furthermore, applying an in-plane external field can break the four-fold symmetry and lifts the Majorana modes to finite energy states in general.…
Majorana zero modes are quasiparticle excitations in condensed matter systems that have been proposed as building blocks of fault-tolerant quantum computers [1]. They are expected to exhibit non-Abelian particle statistics, in contrast to the usual statistics of fermions and bosons, enabling quantum operations to be performed by braiding isolated modes around one another. Quantum braiding operations are topologically protected insofar as these modes are pinned near zero energy, and the pinning is predicted to be exponential as the modes become spatially separated. Following theoretical proposa…
Recent experiment reported the evidence of dispersing one-dimensional Majorana mode trapped by the crystalline domain walls in FeSe$_{0.45}$Te$_{0.55}$. Here, we perform the first-principles calculations to show that iron atoms in the domain wall spontaneously form the ferromagnetic order in line with orientation of the wall. The ferromagnetism can impose a $π$ phase difference between the domain-wall-separated surface superconducting regimes under the appropriate width and magnetization of the wall. Accordingly, the topological surface superconducting state of FeSe$_{0.45}$Te$_{0.55}$ can giv…
Motivated by a recent experiment in which zero-bias peaks have been observed in scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) experiments performed on chains of magnetic atoms on a superconductor, we show, by generalizing earlier work, that a multichannel ferromagnetic wire deposited on a spin-orbit coupled superconducting substrate can realize a non-trivial chiral topological superconducting state with Majorana bound states localized at the wire ends. The non-trivial topological state occurs for generic parameters requiring no fine tuning, at least for very large exchange spin splitting in the wire. We…
We consider the problem of bound states in strongly anisotropic ferromagnetic impurities in a superconductor, motivated by recent experiments that claim to observe Majorana modes at the ends of ferromagnetic wires on a superconducting substrate [S. Nadj-Perge et al., Science 346, 602 (2014)]. Generalizing the successful theory of bound states of spherically symmetric impurities, we consider a wire-like potential using both analytical and numerical approaches. We find that away from the ends of the wire the bound states form bands with pronounced van Hove singularities, giving rise to subgap pe…
Magnet-superconductor hybrid (MSH) systems are a key platform for custom-designed topological superconductors. Ideally, the ends of a one-dimensional MSH structure will host Majorana zero-modes (MZMs), the fundamental unit of topological quantum computing. However, some of the experiments with ferromagnetic chains show a more complicated picture. Due to tiny gap sizes and hence long coherence lengths MZMs might hybridize and lose their topological protection. Recent experiments on a niobium surface have shown that both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic chains may be engineered, with the magn…
We investigate the persistent currents, spin-polarized local density of states, and spectral functions of topological superconductors constructed by placing ferromagnetic impurities on top of an s-wave superconductor with Rashba spin-orbit interaction. We solve self-consistently for the superconducting order parameter and investigate both two-dimensional blocks and one-dimensional wires of ferromagnetic impurities, with the magnetic moments pointing both perpendicular and parallel to the surface. We find that the topologically protected edge states of ferromagnetic blocks give rise to spin-pol…
We propose to use an ancilla fluxonium qubit to interact with a Majorana qubit hosted by a topological one-dimensional wire. The coupling is obtained using the Majorana qubit-controlled 4 pi Josephson effect to flux bias the fluxonium qubit. We demonstrate how this coupling can be used to sensitively identify the topological superconductivity, to measure the state of the Majorana qubit, to construct 2-qubit operations, and to implement quantum memories with the topological protection.
We propose using a mobile magnetic domain wall as a host of zero-energy Majorana fermions in a spin-orbit coupled nanowire sandwiched by two ferromagnetic strips and deposited on an $s$-wave superconductor. The ability to control domain walls by thermal means allows to braid Majorana fermions nonintrusively, which obey non-Abelian statistics. The analytical solutions of Majorana fermions inside domain walls are obtained in the strong spin-orbit regime.
With the discovery of Majorana quasiparticles in semiconductor-superconductor hybrid structures, topologically protected qubits have emerged as a promising contender for quantum information processing. While the construction of a universal quantum computer with topological protection likely requires significant advances in materials science, intermediate-scale devices are nearly within the reach of current technology. As a near-term milestone for topological qubits, we propose a network of topological superconductors as a simulator of a large variety of quantum spin systems, including those wi…
We study the spin and charge currents flowing at the interface of an itinerant ferromagnet with a topological spin-triplet superconductor having different number of time-reversal-invariant Majorana helical modes. Depending on the number of helical modes, the capacity of carrying spin and charge currents is shown to be directly related to the amplitude and orientation of the ferromagnetic magnetization with respect to the superconducting $\vec{d}$-vector. Differently from the one-helical mode spin-triplet superconductor, we find that the presence of a finite amount of electronic hybridization w…
The nonlocal nature of unpaired Majorana bound states (MBSs) in topological superconductors can be exploited to create topologically protected qubits and perform gate operations fault-tolerantly via braidings. However, the time-dependent noises induced by coupling to an environment which is inevitable in any realistic system could spoil the topological protection. In this work, we study the effects of various dynamical noises such as Lorentzian, thermal, and quantum point contact on the MBSs in the recently proposed one-dimensional topological superconductors. We begin by investigating the Kit…

We study the Majorana surface states of higher-spin topological superconductors (TSCs) that could be realized in ultracold atomic systems or doped semimetals with spin-orbit coupling. As a paradigmatic example, we consider a model with p-wave pairing of spin-3/2 fermions that generalizes ${}^3\text{He-}B$. This model has coexisting linear and cubic dispersing Majorana surface bands. We show that these are unstable to interactions, which can generate a spontaneous surface thermal quantum Hall effect (TQHE). By contrast, nonmagnetic quenched disorder induces a surface conformal field theory (CFT…

Chiral $p$-wave superconductor is the primary example of topological systems hosting chiral Majorana edge states. Although candidate materials exist, the conclusive signature of chiral Majorana edge states has not yet been observed in experiments. Here we propose a smoking-gun experiment to detect the chiral Majorana edge states on the basis of theoretical results for the nonlocal conductance in a device consisting of a chiral $p$-wave superconductor and two ferromagnetic leads. The chiral nature of Majorana edge states causes an anomalously long-range and chirality-sensitive nonlocal transpor…
For the search of Majorana fermions, we propose to employ a ramp-type Josephson edge junction between a normal metal such as Au, Ag or alloys of heavy metals and a topologically-trivial dx2-y2 wave high-Tc superconductor YBa2Cu3O7. The success in forming the elusive zero-energy Majorana bound states (MBS) at the junction relies crucially upon the strength of the Rashba spin-orbit coupling (RSOC) at the metal/superconductor interface, the tunneling direction, and the interface quality which includes a near zero tunnel barrier height. When these junction conditions are collectively satisfied, de…
Recent experiments have provided evidence that one-dimensional (1D) topological superconductivity can be realized experimentally by placing transition metal atoms that form a ferromagnetic chain on a superconducting substrate. We address some properties of this type of systems by using a Slater-Koster tight-binding model. We predict that topological superconductivity is nearly universal when ferromagnetic transition metal chains form straight lines on superconducting substrates and that it is possible for more complex chain structures. The proximity induced superconducting gap is $\sim ΔE_{so}…
Combination of proximity-induced superconductivity and ferromagnetic exchange field in a two-dimensional square-lattice antiferromagnet with spin-orbit coupling and nonsymmorphic symmetry can induce a topological superconductor phase with chiral Majorana edge states. The lattice model of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) Hamiltonian was applied to study the phase diagram of bulks and chiral Majorana edge states in nanoribbons. By numerically studying the phase diagram, we found that the non-uniformity of either the superconducting pairing parameters or the exchange field at the two sublattices is…
The interface between two band insulators LaAlO$_3$ and SrTiO$_3$ exhibits low-temperature superconductivity coexisting with an in-plane ferromagnetic order. We show that topological superconductivity hosting Majorana bound states can be induced at the interface by applying a magnetic field perpendicular to the interface. We find that the dephasing effect of the in-plane magnetization on the topological superconducting state can be overcomed by tuning a gate-voltage. We analyze the vortex-core excitations showing the zero-energy Majorana bound states and the effect of non-magnetic disorder on …
Majorana bound states (MBS) and Andreev bound states (ABS) in realistic Majorana nanowires setups have similar experimental signatures which make them hard to distinguishing one from the other. Here, we characterize the continuous Majorana/Andreev crossover interpolating between fully-separated, partially-separated, and fully-overlapping Majorana modes, in terms of global and local topological invariants, fermion parity, quasiparticle densities, Majorana pseudospin and spin polarizations, density overlaps and transition probabilities between opposite Majorana components. We found that in inhom…
A two-dimensional time-reversal symmetric topological superconductor is a fully gapped system possessing a helical Majorana mode on the edges. This helical Majorana edge mode (HMEM), which is a Kramer's pair of two chiral Majorana edge modes in the opposite propagating directions, is robust under time-reversal symmetry protection. We propose a feasible setup and accessible measurement to provide the preliminary step of the HMEM realization by studying superconducting antiferromagnetic quantum spin Hall insulators. Since this antiferromagnetic topological insulator hosts a helical electron edge…
We investigate a heterostructure system with a spin-orbit coupled semiconductor sandwiched by an s-wave superconductor and a ferromagnetic insulator, which supports Majorana fermions (MFs) at the superconducting vortex cores. We propose a scheme of transporting and braiding the MFs, which only requires application of point-like gate voltages in a system with nano-meter patterns. By solving the time-dependent Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation numerically, we monitor the time evolutions of MF wave-functions and show that the braiding of MFs with non-Abelian statistics can be achieved by adiabatic sw…
We present quantum control techniques to engineer flat bands of symmetry-protected Majorana edge modes in s-wave superconductors. Specifically, we show how periodic control may be employed for designing time-independent effective Hamiltonians, which support $Floquet$ $Majorana$ $flat$ $bands$, starting from equilibrium conditions that are either topologically trivial or only support individual Majorana pairs. In the first approach, a suitable modulation of the chemical potential simultaneously induces Majorana flat bands and dynamically $activates$ a pre-existing chiral symmetry which is respo…
To guide experimental work on the search for Majorana zero-energy modes, we calculate the superconducting pairing symmetry of a three-dimensional topological insulator in combination with an s-wave superconductor. In analogy to the case of nanowires with strong spin-orbit coupling we show how the pairing symmetry changes across different topological regimes. We demonstrate that a dominant p-wave pairing relation is not sufficient to realize a Majorana zero-energy mode useful for quantum computation. Our main result of this paper is the relation between odd-frequency pairing and Majorana zero e…
Through $s-d$ coupling, a superconducting thin film interfaced to a noncollinear magnetic insulator inherits its magnetic order, which may induce unconventional superconductivity that hosts Majorana edge states. From the cycloidal, helical, or (tilted) conical magnetic order of multiferroics, or the Bloch and Neel domain walls of ferromagnetic insulators, the induced pairing is ($p_{x}+p_{y}$)-wave, a pairing state that supports Majorana edge modes without adjusting the chemical potential. In this setup, the Majorana states can be separated over the distance of the long range magnetic order, w…
The study of non-Abelian Majorana zero modes advances our understanding of the fundamental physics in quantum matter, and pushes the potential applications of such exotic states to topological quantum computation. It has been shown that in two-dimensional (2D) and 1D chiral superconductors, the isolated Majorana fermions obey non-Abelian statistics. However, Majorana modes in a $Z_2$ time-reversal invariant (TRI) topological superconductor come in pairs due to Kramers' theorem. Therefore, braiding operations in TRI superconductors always exchange two pairs of Majoranas. In this work, we show i…
Motivated by the recent experiment of Wang et al. [Nature Physics 6, 389 (2010)], who observed a highly unusual transport behavior of ferromagnetic Cobalt nanowires proximity-coupled to superconducting electrodes, we study proximity effect and temperature-dependent transport in such a mesoscopic hybrid structure. It is assumed that the asymmetry in the tunneling barrier gives rise to the Rashba spin-orbit-coupling in the barrier that enables induced p-wave superconductivity in the ferromagnet to exist. We first develop a microscopic theory of Andreev scattering at the spin-orbit-coupled interf…
Majorana bound states are zero-energy states predicted to emerge in topological superconductors and intense efforts seeking a definitive proof of their observation are still ongoing. A standard route to realize them involves antagonistic orders: a superconductor in proximity to a ferromagnet. Here we show this issue can be resolved using antiferromagnetic rather than ferromagnetic order. We propose to use a chain of antiferromagnetic skyrmions, in an otherwise collinear antiferromagnet, coupled to a bulk conventional superconductor as a novel platform capable of supporting Majorana bound state…
We study the energy spectrum of a vortex core in a two-dimensional semiconductor with Rashba spin-orbit interaction and proximity-coupled to a conventional superconductor and a ferromagnetic insulator. We perform self-consistent calculations using the microscopic tight-binding Bogoliubov-de Gennes method on a lattice and confirm the existence of Majorana fermions in the non-trivial topological phase. We also find two different topologically trivial bulk superconducting phases, only differing in the type of vortex core structure they support and separated by a zero-energy excitation. Furthermor…
Contrary to the widespread belief that Majorana zero-energy modes, existing as bound edge states in 2D topological insulator (TI)-superconductor (SC) hybrid structures, are unaffected by non-magnetic static disorder by virtue of Anderson's theorem, we show that such a protection against disorder does not exist in realistic multi-channel TI/SC/ferromagnetic insulator (FI) sandwich structures of experimental relevance since the time-reversal symmetry is explicitly broken locally at the SC/FI interface where the end Majorana mode (MM) resides. We find that although the MM itself and the \emph{bul…
We consider topological superconductors and topological insulator/superconductor structures in the presence of multiple static vortices that host Majorana modes and focus on the Majorana tunneling processes between vortices. It is shown that these tunnelings generally lift the degeneracy of the many-body ground state in a non-universal way, sensitive to microscopic details at the smallest length-scales determined by the underlying physical problem. We also discuss an explicit realization of the Jackiw-Rossi zero-mode in a topological insulator/superconductor structure with zero chemical potent…
We investigate one-dimensional (1D) Majorana bound states (MBSs) realized in terms of the helical edge states of a 2D quantum spin-Hall insulator (QSHI) in a heterostructure with a superconducting substrate and two ferromagnetic insulators (FIs). By means of Bogoliubov-de Gennes approach we demonstrate that there is a helical spin texture in the MBS wave function with a pitch proportional to the Fermi momentum of the helical edge states of QSHI. Moreover, simultaneous detection on local density of states by scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy at a position close to one FI edge and a…
The external controllability of topological superconductors and Majorana fermions would be important both for fundamental and practical interests. Here we predict the electric-field control of Majorana fermions in two-dimensional topological superconductors utilizing a topological insulator thin film proximity coupled to a conventional $s$-wave superconductor. With ferromagnetic ordering, the tunable structure inversion asymmetry by vertical electric field could induce topological quantum phase transition and realize a chiral topological superconductor state. A zero-energy Majorana bound state…
We investigate the local density of states, spectral function, and superconducting pair amplitudes for signatures of Majorana fermions in vortex cores in ferromagnetic and spin-orbit coupled semiconductor-superconductor heterostructures. We show that the Majorana fermion quasiparticle momentum distribution is always symmetrically distributed at a finite radius around a high symmetry point, thereby providing a necessary condition for a low-energy state to be a Majorana fermion. In real space profiles of the local density of states through the vortex core the Majorana fermion, together with othe…
We study the dynamics and readout of topological qubits encoded by zero-energy Majorana bound states in a topological superconductor. We take into account bosonic modes due to the electromagnetic environment which couple the Majorana manifold to above-gap continuum quasi-particles. This coupling causes the degenerate ground state of the topological superconductor to be dressed in a polaron-like manner by quasi-particle states and bosons, and the system to become gapless. Topological protection and hence full coherence is only maintained if the qubit is operated and read out within the low-ener…
The 1937 theoretical discovery of Majorana fermions--whose defining property is that they are their own anti-particles--has since impacted diverse problems ranging from neutrino physics and dark matter searches to the fractional quantum Hall effect and superconductivity. Despite this long history the unambiguous observation of Majorana fermions nevertheless remains an outstanding goal. This review article highlights recent advances in the condensed matter search for Majorana that have led many in the field to believe that this quest may soon bear fruit. We begin by introducing in some detail e…
