I derive a general set of boundary conditions for quasiclassical transport theory of metals and superconductors that is valid for equilibrium and non-equilibrium situations and includes multi-band systems, weakly and strongly spin-polarized systems, and disordered systems. The formulation is in terms of the normal state scattering matrix. Various special cases for boundary conditions are known in the literature, that are however limited to either equilibrium situations or single band systems. The present formulation unifies and extends all these results. In this paper I will present the general theory in terms of coherence functions and distribution functions and demonstrate its use by applying it to the problem of spin-active interfaces in superconducting devices and the case of superconductor/half-metal interface scattering.
Two dimensional topological superconductors (TS) host chiral Majorana modes (MMs) localized at the boundaries. In this work, within quasiclassical approximation we study the effect of disorder on the localization length of MMs in two dimensional spin-orbit (SO) coupled superconductors. We find nonmonotonic behavior of the Majorana localization length as a function of disorder strength. At weak disorder, the Majorana localization length decreases with an increasing disorder strength. Decreasing the disorder scattering time below a critical value $τ_c$, the Majorana localization length starts to…
We derive the quasiclassical equations that describe two-dimensional superconductors with a large Rashba spin-orbit coupling and in the presence of impurities. These equations account for the helical phase induced by an in-plane magnetic field, with a superconducting order parameter that is spatially modulated along a direction perpendicular to the field. We also derive the generalized Ginzburg-Landau functional, which includes a linear-in-gradient term corresponding to the helical phase. This theory paves the way for studies of the proximity effect in two-dimensional electron gases with large…
The quasiclassical theory in terms of equations for the Green's functions (Eilenberger equations) is generalized in order to allow for quantitative description of the magneto-electric effects and proximity-induced triplet correlations in the presence of spin-orbit coupling in hybrid superconducting systems. The formalism is valid under the condition that the spin-orbit coupling is weak with respect to the Fermi energy, but exceeds the superconducting energy scale considerably. On the basis of the derived formalism it is shown that the triplet correlations in the spin-orbit coupled normal metal…
The Eilenberger-Larkin-Ovchinnikov-Eliashberg quasiclassical theory of superconductivity is a powerful method enabling studies of a wide range of equilibrium and non-equilibrium phenomena in conventional and unconventional superconductors. We introduce here a finite element method, based on a discontinuous Galerkin approach, to self-consistently solve the underlying transport equations for general device geometries, arbitrary mean free path and symmetry of the superconducting order parameter. We present results on i) the influence of scalar impurity scattering on phase crystals in $d$-wave sup…

In the seminal work by G. Eilenberger [Z. Phys. 214, 195 (1968)], the quasiclassical expression for the free energy of spin-singlet superconductor has been suggested. Starting from the Luttinger-Ward formulation we derive the Eilenberger free energy and find its generalization for superconductor or superfluid with spin-triplet correlations. Besides ordinary superconductors with various scattering mechanisms, the obtained free energy functional can be used for systems with spin-triplet pairing such as superfluid $^3$He and superconducting systems with spatially-inhomogeneous exchange field or s…
Boundary conditions in quasiclassical theory of superconductivity are of crucial importance for describing proximity effects in heterostructures between different materials. Although they have been derived for the ballistic case in full generality, corresponding boundary conditions for the diffusive limit, described by Usadel theory, have been lacking for interfaces involving strongly spin-polarized materials, such as e.g. half-metallic ferromagnets. Given the current intense research in the emerging field of superconducting spintronics, the formulation of appropriate boundary conditions for t…
Vortex lattice states occurring in noncentrosymmetric superconductors with the spin-orbit coupling of Rashba type under a magnetic field parallel to the symmetry plane are examined by assuming the $s$-wave pairing case and in an approach combining the quasiclassical theory with the Landau level expansion of the superconducting order parameter. The resulting field-temperature phase diagrams include not only a discontinuous transition but a continuous crossover between different vortex lattice structures, and, further, a critical end point of a structural transition line is found in an intermedi…
We investigate the third-harmonic generation (THG) of s-wave superconductors under microwave pulse irradiation. We consider the effect of paramagnetic impurities on the THG intensity of dirty superconductors. The nonlinear response function is calculated using the method of the quasiclassical Green function. It is shown that the amplitude mode is included as the vertex correction and makes a predominant contribution to the THG intensity. When the effect of paramagnetic impurities is weak, the THG intensity shows a peak at the temperature at which the superconducting gap is about the same as th…
The charging effect of a superconducting vortex core is very important for transport properties of superconducting vortices. The chiral p-wave superconductor, known as a topological superconductor (SC), has a Majorana fermion in a vortex core and the charging effect has been studied using microscopic Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) theory. According to calculations based on the BdG theory, one type of the vortex is charged as well as the vortex of the s-wave SC, while the other is uncharged. We reproduce this interesting charging effect using an augmented quasiclassical theory in chiral p-wave SCs,…
We report results of a microscopic calculation of a second-order phase transition into a state breaking time-reversal and translational invariance along pair-breaking edges of $d$-wave superconductors. By solving a tight-binding model through exact diagonalization with the Bogoliubov-de~Gennes method, we find that such a state with current loops having a diameter of a few coherence lengths is energetically favorable below $T^*$ between 10%-20% of $T_{\mathrm{c}}$ of bulk superconductivity, depending on model parameters. This extends our previous studies of such a phase crystal within the quasi…
The quasiclassical theory of superconductivity provides a methodology to study emergent phenomena in hybrid structures comprised of superconductors interfaced with other materials. A key component in this theory is the boundary condition that the Green functions describing the materials must satisfy. Recently, progress has been made toward formulating such a boundary condition for interfaces with spin-orbit coupling, the latter playing an important role for several phenomena in spintronics. Here, we derive a boundary condition for spin-orbit coupled interfaces that includes gradient terms whic…
Superconducting gap function in the organic superconductor (TMTSF)2ClO4 with anion ordering; First-principles calculations and quasiclassical analysis for angle-resolved heat capacity
We consider the steady-state nonequilibrium behavior of mesoscopic superconducting wires connected to normal-metal reservoirs. Going beyond the diffusive limit, we utilize the quasiclassical theory and perform a self-consistent calculation that guarantees current conservation through the entire system. Going from the ballistic to the diffusive limit, we investigate several crucial phenomena such as charge imbalance, momentum-resolved nonequilbrium distributions, and the current-to-superflow conversion. Connecting to earlier results for the diffusive case, we find that superconductivity can bre…
We develop a scheme of Gor'kov Green's functions to treat impurity effects on Caroli-de Gennes-Matricon (CdGM) mode in superconductors (SCs) by improving the Kopnin-Kravtsov scheme with respect to the coherence factors and applicability to various SCs. We can study the impurity effects keeping the discreteness of the energy spectrum in contrast to the quasiclassical theory. We can thus apply this scheme to the SCs with the small quasiclassical parameter $k_{\mathrm{F}}ξ_{0}$ (which is the product of the Fermi wavenumber $k_{\mathrm{F}}$ and the coherence length $ξ_{0}$ in pure SC at zero tempe…
The odd-frequency superconducting state appears generally in hybrid structures consisting of conventional superconductors and other materials, and features electrons that form temporally non-local Cooper pairs. The quasiclassical theory of superconductivity has been extensively used to model such systems, finding in many cases excellent agreement with experimental measurements. Therefore, it is of interest to study effective models of odd-frequency superconductivity to predict new phenomena associated with this form of unconventional pairing. We establish necessary criteria that the quasiclass…

We theoretically investigate domain wall motion in an antiferromagnetic insulator layer caused by thermally generated spin currents in an adjacent spin-split superconductor layer. An uncompensated antiferromagnet interface enables the two crucial ingredients underlying the mechanism - spin splitting in the superconductor and absorption of spin currents by the antiferromagnet. Treating the superconductor using the quasiclassical theory and the antiferromagnet via Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert description, we find domain wall propagation along the thermal gradient with relatively large velocities $\si…
In recent years, substantial progress has been made regarding the application of quasiclassical theory on superconducting hybrid structures. This theoretical framework is reliant on a proper set of boundary conditions in order to describe multilayered systems. With the advent of the field of superconducting spintronics, systems which combine heavy metal layers, in which there is large spin--orbit coupling, with ferromagnets have received a great deal of attention, due to their potential for generating long range triplet superconductivity. In contrast to interfaces of strongly spin polarized ma…
We studied strong-coupling effect upon an isolated vortex in a two-dimensional chiral p-wave superconductor. We solved the Eilenberger equation for the quasiclassical Green's functions and the Eliashberg equation with single mode Einstein boson self-consistently. We calculated the free-energy of each obtained vortex, and found that a non-axisymmetric vortex metastably exists in some situation.
A superconductor subject to electromagnetic irradiation in the terahertz range can show amplitude oscillations of its order parameter. However, coupling this so-called Higgs mode to the charge current is notoriously difficult. We propose to achieve such a coupling in a particle-hole-asymmetric configuration using a DC-voltage-biased normal-metal--superconductor tunnel junction. Using the quasiclassical Green's function formalism, we demonstrate three characteristic signatures of the Higgs mode: (i) The AC charge current exhibits a pronounced resonant behavior and is maximal when the radiation …
