In this work, we demonstrate a discrete dispersion scan scheme using a low number of flat windows to vary the dispersion of laser pulses in discrete steps. Monte Carlo simulations indicate that the pulse duration can be retrieved accurately with less than 10 dispersion steps, which we verify experimentally by measuring few-cycle pulses and material dispersion curves at 3 and 10 micrometer wavelength. This minimal measuring scheme using only five optical components without the need for high-precision positioners and interferometric alignment can be readily implemented in many wavelength ranges and situations.
We report on Mid-infrared (MIR) OCT at 4 $μ$m based on collinear sum-frequency upconversion and promote the A-scan scan rate to 3 kHz. We demonstrate the increased imaging speed for two spectral realizations, one providing an axial resolution of 8.6 $μ$m, and one providing a record axial resolution of 5.8 $μ$m. Image performance is evaluated by sub-surface micro-mapping of a plastic glove and real-time monitoring of CO$_2$ in parallel with OCT imaging.
The factors limiting the resolution of displacement sensor based on extrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometer were studied. An analytical model giving the dependency of EFPI resolution on the parameters of an optical setup and a sensor interrogator was developed. The proposed model enables one to either estimate the limit of possible resolution achievable with a given setup, or to derive the requirements for optical elements and/or a sensor interrogator necessary for attaining the desired sensor resolution. An experiment supporting the analytical derivations was performed, demonstrating a large dyn…
We report here an experimental setup to perform three-pulse pump-probe measurements over a wide wavelength and temperature range. By combining two pump pulses in the visible (650-900 nm) and mid-IR (5-20 $μ$m) range, with a broadband supercontinuum white-light probe, our apparatus enables both the combined selective excitation of different material degrees of freedom and a full time-dependent reconstruction of the non-equilibrium dielectric function of the sample. We describe here the optical setup, the cryogenic sample environment and the custom-made acquisition electronics capable of referen…
We report a singly resonant continuous-wave optical parametric oscillator (SRO), which is pumped by a semiconductor laser system and operates in the mid-infrared region (2.9 to 3.6 μm). Fast tuning of the mid-infrared output wavelength by more than 200 nm is demonstrated by scanning the pump laser wavelength through only 1.25 nm, without any need to adjust the SRO settings. The exceptionally large tuning range is obtained by choosing a pump wavelength (780 nm) that corresponds to a turning point of the group velocity mismatch between the phase-matched signal and idler waves of the SRO.
We present a new variant of dispersion scan (d-scan) based on surface third-harmonic generation (STHG) and a ptychographic algorithm taylored for full retrieval (amplitude and phase) of broadband laser pulses. We demonstrate the technique by temporally measuring and compressing few-cycle pulses with 7 fs and 2.5 nJ from a Ti:Sapphire oscillator, using a sapphire window as the nonlinear medium. The results are in very good agreement with standard second-harmonic d-scan measurements based on a nonlinear crystal. The intrinsically broadband and phase-matching-independent nature of STHG make this …
We experimentally demonstrate in a difference-frequency generation mid-infrared frequency comb source the effect of temporal overlap between pump- and signal- pulse to the relative intensity noise (RIN) of the idler pulse. When scanning the temporal delay between our 130 fs long signal- and pump pulses, we observe a RIN minimum with a 3 dB width of 20 fs delay and an RIN increase of 20 dB in 40 fs delay at the edges of this minimum. We also demonstrate active long-term stabilization of the mid-infrared frequency comb source to the temporal overlap setting corresponding to the lowest RIN operat…
We report a photoacoustic spectroscopy setup with a high-power mid-infrared frequency comb as the light source. The setup is used in broadband spectroscopy of radiocarbon methane. Due to the high sensitivity of a cantilever-enhanced photoacoustic cell and the high power light source, we can reach a detection limit below 100 ppb in a broadband measurement with a sample volume of only a few milliliters. The first infrared spectrum of $^{14}\text{CH}_4$ is reported and given a preliminary assignment. The results lay a foundation for the development of optical detection systems for radiocarbon met…
We report on a technically simple approach to achieve high-resolution and high-sensitivity Fourier-domain OCT imaging in the mid-infrared range. The proposed OCT system employs an InF3 supercontinuum source. A specially designed dispersive scanning spectrometer based on a single InAsSb point detector is employed for detection. The spectrometer enables structural OCT imaging in the spectral range from 3140 nm to 4190 nm with a characteristic sensitivity of over 80 dB and an axial resolution below 8 um. The capabilities of the system are demonstrated for imaging of porous ceramic samples and tra…
Fourier transform (FT) spectroscopy is a versatile technique for studying the infrared (IR) optical response of solid-, liquid-, and gas-phase samples. In standard FT-IR spectrometers, a light beam passing through a Michelson interferometer is focused onto a sample with condenser optics. This design enables us to examine relatively small samples, but the large solid angle of the focused infrared beam makes it difficult to analyze angle-dependent characteristics. Here we design and construct a high-precision angle-resolved reflection setup compatible with a commercial FT-IR spectrometer. Our se…

Ultrafast optical excitation with intense mid-infrared and terahertz pulses has emerged as a new tool to control materials dynamically. As most experiments are performed with femtosecond pulse excitation, typical lifetimes of most light-induced phenomena in solids are of only few picoseconds. Yet, many scientific applications require longer drive pulses and lifetimes. Here, we describe a mid-infrared pump - terahertz-probe setup based on a CO$\mathrm{_2}$ laser seeded with 10.6 $\mathrmμ$m wavelength pulses from an optical parametric amplifier, itself pumped by a Ti:Al$\mathrm{_2}$O$\mathrm{_3…
