Ultrafast optical excitation with intense mid-infrared and terahertz pulses has emerged as a new tool to control materials dynamically. As most experiments are performed with femtosecond pulse excitation, typical lifetimes of most light-induced phenomena in solids are of only few picoseconds. Yet, many scientific applications require longer drive pulses and lifetimes. Here, we describe a mid-infrared pump - terahertz-probe setup based on a CO$\mathrm{_2}$ laser seeded with 10.6 $\mathrmμ$m wavelength pulses from an optical parametric amplifier, itself pumped by a Ti:Al$\mathrm{_2}$O$\mathrm{_3}$ laser. The output of the seeded CO$\mathrm{_2}$ laser produces high power pulses of nanosecond duration, which are synchronized to the femtosecond laser. Hence, these pulses can be tuned in pulse duration by slicing their front and back edges with semiconductor-plasma mirrors irradiated by replicas of the femtosecond seed laser pulses. Variable pulse lengths from 5 ps to 1.3 ns are achieved, and used in mid-infrared pump, terahertz-probe experiments with probe pulses generated and electro-optically sampled by the femtosecond laser.
High energy terahertz pulses are produced by optical rectification (OR) in organic crystals DAST and DSTMS by a Ti:sapphire amplifier system centered at 0.8 microns. The simple scheme provides broadband spectra between 1 and 5 THz, when pumped by collimated 60 fs near-infrared pump pulse and it is scalable in energy. Fluence-dependent conversion efficiency and damage threshold are reported as well as optimized OR at visible wavelength.
We obtained an optical-to-terahertz (THz) energy conversion efficiency of 0.5% using the tilted-pulse-front technique in lithium niobate at a cryogenically cooled temperature of 100 K pumped by amplified Ti:sapphire laser pulses with ~150 fs pulse duration at 800 nm wavelength. Compared with the optimized conversion efficiency of 0.18% achieved at room temperature, we achieved more than 2.5 times enhancement in conversion efficiency upon cryogenically cooling the crystal due to reduction of THz absorption. Further improvements to the conversion efficiency can be made by optimizing the out-coup…
We experimentally investigate the limits to 800 nm-to-terahertz (THz) energy conversion in lithium niobate at room temperature driven by amplified Ti:Sapphire laser pulses with tilted-pulse-front. The influence of the pump central wavelength, pulse duration, and fluence on THz generation is studied. We achieved a high peak efficiency of 0.12% using transform limited 150 fs pulses and observed saturation of the optical to THz conversion efficiency at a fluence of 15 mJ/cm2. We experimentally identify two main limitations for the scaling of optical-to-THz conversion efficiencies: (i) the large s…
We demonstrate ultrafast resonance switching of terahertz metamaterials through optical excitation of radiation damaged silicon placed in the gap of single split gap ring resonator. We observe the dynamic switching OFF of the fundamental resonance mode on a time scale of 4 picoseconds (ps) followed by the switching ON of the same resonance after 20 ps. Electric field distributions in the metamaterials unit cell derived through numerical simulations clearly support our experimental observations, showing that the high electric field at the resonator gaps, responsible for inductive-capacitive res…
We present a Ho:YLF Chirped-Pulse Amplification (CPA) laser for pumping a longwave infrared Optical Parametric Chirped Pulse Amplifier (OPCPA) at a 1 kHz repetition rate. By utilizing a Ti:Sapphire laser as a frontend, 5-μJ seed pulses at 2051 nm laser pulse are generated in a Dual-Chirp Optical Parametric Amplifier (DC-OPA), which are amplified to 28 mJ pulses with a pulse duration of 6.8 ps. The scheme offers a potential driver for two-color (800 nm and 8 μm) high harmonic generation with an increased keV X-ray photon flux.
We report the first experimental demonstration of efficient and high-power operation of a Ti:sapphire laser pumped by a simple, compact, continuous-wave (cw) fiber-laser-based green source. The pump radiation is obtained by direct single-pass second-harmonic-generation (SHG) of a 33-W, cw Yb-fiber laser in 30-mm-long MgO:sPPLT crystal, providing 11 W of single-frequency green power at 532 nm in TEM00 spatial profile with power and frequency stability better than 3.3% and 32 MHz, respectively, over one hour. The Ti:sapphire laser is continuously tunable across 743-970 nm and can deliver an outp…
The organic terahertz (THz) generation crystal BNA has recently gained traction as a valuable source to produce broadband THz pulses. Even when pumped with 800-nm light, thin BNA crystals can produce relatively high electric fields with frequency components out to 5 THz. However, the THz output when pumped with 800-nm light is limited by the damage threshold of the organic crystal. Here we report that the damage threshold of BNA can be significantly improved by physically bonding BNA to a high-thermal conductivity sapphire window. When pumped with 800-nm light from an amplified Ti:sapphire las…
We present a numerical parametric study of single-cycle electromagnetic pulse generation in a DAST/SiO2 multilayer structure via collinear optical rectification of 800 nm femtosecond laser pulses. It is shown that modifications of the thicknesses of the DAST and SiO2 layers allow tuning of the average frequency of the generated THz pulses in the frequency range from 3 to 6 THz. The laser-to-THz energy conversion efficiency in the proposed structures is compared with that in a bulk DAST crystal and a quasi-phase-matching periodically poled DAST crystal and shows significant enhancement.
Correlated photon pairs generated through spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) are a key resource in quantum optics. In many quantum optics applications, such as satellite quantum key distribution (QKD), a compact, high repetition rate pump laser is required. Here we demonstrate the use of a compact, GHz-rate diode-pumped three-element Kerr-lens-modelocked Ti:sapphire laser for the generation of correlated photon pairs at 790 nm. We verify the presence of indistinguishable photons produced via SPDC using Hong-Ou-Mandel (HOM) interferometry and observe a dip in coincidence counts with …
We report an injection-locked cw titanium:sapphire ring laser at 846 nm. It produces 1.00 W in a single frequency when pumped with 5.5 W. Single frequency operation requires only a few milliwatts of injected power.
We report on high energy terahertz pulses by optical rectification (OR) in the organic crystal N-benzyl-2-methyl-4-nitroaniline (BNA) directly pumped by a conventional Ti:Sapphire (Ti:Sa) amplifier. The simple scheme provides an optical to terahertz conversion efficiency of 0.25% when pumped by a collimated laser pulses with duration of 50 fs and central wavelength of 800nm. The generated radiation spans frequencies between 0.2 and 3 THz. We measured the damage threshold as well as the dependency of the conversion efficiency on the pump fluence, pump wavelength, and pulse duration.
The thermal lensing effects in the lasing crystal appear to be dominant when the pump laser focused on the lasing crystal which causes the local heating effect. The spatial refractive index variations observed if the crystal has non-uniform temperature distribution. In the present study, the demonstration of thermal lensing effect of Brewster-cut Ti: Sapphire crystal carried out when pumped by 25 ps pulses at 80 MHz repetition rate with 532 nm central wavelength, while the average pump power controlled by the attenuator. The thermal lensing effects measured first at the ~293 K temperature and …
We systematically study the pump-wavelength dependence of terahertz pulse generation in thin-film spintronic THz emitters composed of a ferromagnetic Fe layer between adjacent nonmagnetic W and Pt layers. We find that the efficiency of THz generation is essentially at for excitation by 150 fs pulses with center wavelengths ranging from 900 to 1500 nm, demonstrating that the spin current does not depend strongly on the pump photon energy. We show that the inclusion of dielectric overlayers of TiO2 and SiO2, designed for a particular excitation wavelength, can enhance the terahertz emission by a…
Topological crystalline insulators -- topological insulators whose properties are guaranteed by crystalline symmetry -- can potentially provide a promising platform for terahertz optoelectronic devices, as their properties can be tuned on demand when layered in heterostructures. We perform the first optical-pump terahertz-probe spectroscopy of topological crystalline insulators, using them to study the dynamics of Pb1-xSnxSe as a function of temperature. At low temperatures, excitation of Dirac fermions leads to an increase in terahertz transmission; from this negative photoconductivity, the i…
We present a design for a high-energy single stage mid-IR difference frequency generation adapted to a two-color Ti:sapphire amplifier system. The optimized mixing process is based on chirped pulse difference frequency generation (CP-DFG), allowing for a higher conversion efficiency, larger bandwidth and reduced two photon absorption losses. The numerical start-to-end simulations include stretching, chirped pulse difference frequency generation and pulse compression. Realistic design parameters for commercially available non linear crystals (GaSe, AgGaS2, LiInSe2, LiGaSe2) are considered. Comp…
A new type of tilted-pulse-front pumped terahertz (THz) source has been demonstrated, which is based on a lithium niobate plane-parallel slab with an echelon structure on its input surface. Single-cycle pulses of 1 microjoule energy and 0.30 THz central frequency have been generated with 0.05% efficiency from such a source. One order-of-magnitude increase in efficiency is expected by pumping a cryogenically cooled echelon of increased size and thickness with a Ti:sapphire laser. The use of a plane-parallel nonlinear optical crystal slab enables straightforward scaling to high THz pulse energie…
It is evidenced by numerical calculations that optically pumped graphene is suitable for compensating inherent loss in terahertz (THz) metamaterials. In a first step, the complex conductivity of graphene under optical pumping is calculated and the proper conditions for terahertz amplification in single layer graphene are determined. It is shown that amplification in graphene occurs for temperatures up to room temperature and for moderate pump intensities when pumped at a telecommunication wavelength $λ=1.5~\mathrm{μm}$. Furthermore, the amplification properties of graphene are evaluated and di…
We introduce a general technique to generate compressed broadband terahertz pulses based on difference frequency generation of optical pump radiation using aperiodically poled structures. The pump pulse format and poling of the crystals conceived are such that the emergent terahertz pulse is compressed. The approach circumvents pump pulse distortions that result from non-collinear approaches and the need for external compression. It is particularly efficient for the generation of pulses of intermediate durations of few to tens of cycles. For instance, conversion efficiencies in the few percent…
We demonstrate efficient multicycle terahertz pulse generation at 14.6 THz from large-area lithium niobate crystals by using high-energy (up to 2 J) femtosecond Ti:sapphire laser pulses. Such terahertz radiation is produced by phase-matched optical rectification in lithium niobate. Experimentally, we achieve maximal terahertz energy of 0.71 mJ with conversion efficiency of $\sim$0.04%. We also find that the effective interaction length for optimal terahertz conversion is fundamentally limited by terahertz absorption, laser pulse stretching by material dispersion, and terahertz-induced nonlinea…
We study ultrafast magnetization quenching of ferromagnetic iron following excitation by an optical vs a terahertz pump pulse. While the optical pump (photon energy of 3.1 eV) induces a strongly nonthermal electron distribution, terahertz excitation (~4 meV) results in a quasi-thermal perturbation of the electron population. The pump-induced spin and electron dynamics are interrogated by the magneto-optic Kerr effect (MOKE). A deconvolution procedure allows us to push the time resolution down to 130 fs, even though the driving terahertz pulse is more than 0.5 ps long. Remarkably, the MOKE sign…
The recent demonstration of a terahertz (THz) molecular gas laser pumped by a mid-infrared quantum cascade laser (QCL) has opened up new perspectives for this family of sources, traditionally relying on CO2-laser pumping. A so far open question concerning QCL-pumped THz molecular lasers (MLs) is related to their spectral purity. Indeed, assessing their frequency/phase noise is crucial for a number of applications potentially exploiting these sources as local oscillators. Here this question is addressed by reporting the measurement of the frequency noise power spectral density (PSD) of a THz ML…
We report a few-cycle, broadband, singly-resonant optical parametric oscillator (OPO) for the mid-infrared based on MgO-doped periodically-poled LiNbO3 (MgO:PPLN), synchronously pumped by a 20-fs Ti:sapphire laser. By using crystal interaction lengths as short as 250 um, and careful dispersion management of input pump pulses and the OPO resonator, near-transform-limited, few-cycle idler pulses tunable across the mid-infrared have been generated, with as few as 3.7 optical cycles at 2682 nm. The OPO can be continuously tuned over 2179-3732 nm by cavity delay tuning, providing up to 33 mW of out…
We propose a high resolution spatial diagnostic method via inserting a millimeter-gap grating into the collimated terahertz beam to monitor the minute variation of the terahertz beam in strong-field terahertz sources, which is difficult to be resolved in conventional terahertz imaging systems. To verify the method, we intentionally fabricate tiny variations of the terahertz beam through tuning the iris for the infrared pumping beam before the tilted pulse-front pumping (TPFP) setups. The phenomena can be well explained by the the theory based on tilted pulse front technique and terahertz diffr…
We demonstrate high-energy terahertz generation from a large-aperture (75 mm diameter) lithium niobate wafer by using a femtosecond laser with energy up to 2 J. This scheme utilizes optical rectification in a bulk lithium niobate crystal, where most terahertz energy is emitted from a thin layer of the rear surface. Despite its simple setup, this scheme can yield 0.19 mJ of terahertz energy with laser-to-terahertz conversion efficiencies of ~0.01%, about 3 times better than ZnTe when pumped at 800 nm. The experimental setup is up-scalable for multi-mJ terahertz generation with petawatt laser pu…
We analytically show how a superposition of beamlets produces terahertz radiation with greater spatial homogeneity and efficiency compared to tilted-pulse-fronts generated by diffraction gratings. The advantages are particularly notable for large pump bandwiths and beam sizes, alluding to better performance in the presence of cascading effects and higher energy pumping. A theory of terahertz generation using a superposition of beamlets is developed. It is shown how such an arrangement produces a distortion free tilted-pulse-front. Closed form expressions for terahertz spectra and transients in…
Phase-stabilized 12-fs, 1-nJ pulses from a commercial Ti:sapphire oscillator are directly amplified in a chirped-pulse optical parametric amplifier and recompressed to yield near-transform-limited 17.3-fs pulses. The amplification process is demonstrated to be phase preserving and leads to 85-uJ, carrier-envelope-offset phase-locked pulses at 1 kHz for 0.9 mJ of pump, corresponding to a single-pass gain of 8.5 x 10^4.
A 2-D spatio-temporal analysis of terahertz generation by optical rectification of tilted-pulse-fronts is presented. Closed form expressions of terahertz transients and spectra in two spatial dimensions are furnished in the undepleted limit. Importantly, the analysis incorporates spatio-temporal distortions of the optical pump pulse such as angular dispersion, group-velocity dispersion due to angular dispersion, spatial and temporal chirp as well as beam curvature. The importance of the radius of curvature to the tilt-angle and group-velocity dispersion due to angular dispersion to terahertz f…
We are reporting on terahertz generation from organic crystal BNA using a 1.15 to 1.55 um near infrared pump. We observed a very large emission spectrum extending up to 7 THz, compared to 2.5 THz from Ti:Sa pump in previous reports. The maximum optical-to-THz conversion efficiency in our experiment was 0.8% at 1 kHz repetition rate and without saturation leading to a peak electric field of 1 GV/m. Our results show pronounced phase matching privilege for intense terahertz generation using a pump in the 1.15 to 1.25 um range where high energy near infrared pump sources operate.
Using an affordable ytterbium laser with sub-mJ of energy combined with a novel pulse compression technique, we demonstrate an extremely competitive state-of-the-art terahertz (THz) source with 53 mW of average power and 310 kV/cm at focus from the tilted-pulse front pumping scheme in lithium niobate at room temperature. Key points of this demonstration include the use of a pump pulse duration of 280 fs in combination with an echelon mirror. Our results present unmatched combined characteristics and are highly competitive with the existing THz sources pumped at the mJ range. This demonstration…
The gain recovery time of a heterogeneous active region terahertz quantum cascade laser is studied by terahertz-pump,i terahertz-probe spectroscopy. The investigated active region, which is based on a bound-to-continuum optical transition with an optical phonon assisted extraction, exhibits a gain recovery time in the range of 34$\,$-$\,$50$\,$ps dependent on the operation condition of the laser. The recovery time gets shorter for stronger pumping of the laser while the recovery dynamics slows down with increasing operation temperature. These results indicate the important role of the intracav…
We experimentally demonstrate an efficient broadband second harmonic generation process with tunable mode-locked Ti: sapphire oscillator. We have achieved a robust broadband and efficient flat conversion of more than 35nm wavelength, by designing an adiabatic aperiodically poled potassium titanyl phosphate (KTP) crystal. Moreover, we have shown that with such efficient flat conversion, we can shape and control broadband second harmonic pulses. More specifically, we assign spectral-phase of abs-value and π-step, which allows wavelength tunable intense pump-probe and amplitude modulation of the …
Titanium doped sapphire (Ti:sapphire) is a laser gain material with broad gain bandwidth benefiting from the material stability of sapphire. These favorable characteristics of Ti:sapphire have given rise to femtosecond lasers and optical frequency combs. Shaping a single Ti:sapphire crystal into a millimeter sized high quality whispering gallery mode resonator ($Q\sim10^8$) reduces the lasing threshold to 14.2 mW and increases the laser slope efficiency to 34%. The observed lasing can be both multi-mode and single-mode. This is the first demonstration of a Ti:sapphire whispering-gallery laser.…
We describe a robust system for laser-driven narrowband terahertz generation with high conversion efficiency in periodically poled Lithium Niobate (PPLN). In the multi-stage terahertz generation system, the pump pulse is recycled after each PPLN stage for further terahertz generation. By out-coupling the terahertz radiation generated in each stage, extra absorption is circumvented and effective interaction length is increased. The separation of the terahertz and optical pulses at each stage is accomplished by an appropriately designed out-coupler. To evaluate the proposed architecture, the gov…
A tilted-pulse-front pumped terahertz pulse source is proposed for the generation of extremely high field single-cycle terahertz pulses. The very simple and compact source consists of a single crystal slab having a blazed reflection grating grooved in its back surface. Its further important advantages are the energy scalability and the symmetric THz beam profile. Generation of 50 MV/cm focused field with 5.6 mJ terahertz pulse energy is predicted for a 5 cm diameter LiNbO$_3$ crystal, if the pump pulse is of 450 mJ energy, 1030 nm central wavelength and 1 ps pulse duration. Such sources can ba…
Femtosecond laser pulses interacting with LiNbO3 has been widely applied in intense terahertz generation, excitation and imaging of phonon polaritons and modulating light. It is of great importance to study the nonlinearities induced by femtosecond laser pulses in LiNbO3. Here, we demonstrate that both Kerr nonlinearity and Kerr-like nonlinearity induced by terahertz wave occur under the interaction between laser pulses and LiNbO3 using optical pump-probe techniques. We show that the contribution of Kerr-like nonlinearity to pump-probe spectra varies with the interaction length because of the …
We introduce a new regime of cascaded quadratic nonlinearities which result in a continuous red shift of the optical pump, analogous to a Raman shifting process rather than self-phase modulation. This is particularly relevant to terahertz generation, where a continuous red shift of the pump can resolve current issues such as dispersion management and laser-induced damage. We show that in the absence of absorption or dispersion, the presented Raman shifting method will result in optical-to-terahertz energy conversion efficiencies that approach $100\%$ which is not possible with conventional cas…
To achieve high efficiency and good performance of spintronic terahertz sources, we propose and corroborate a remnant magnetization method to radiate continuously and stably terahertz pulses from W/CoFeB/Pt magnetic nanofilms without carrying magnets on the transmitters driven by femtosecond laser pulses. We systematically investigate the influences of the pumping central wavelength and find out the optimal wavelength for a fixed sample thickness. We also optimize the incidence angle of the pumping laser and find the emission efficiency is enhanced under oblique incidence. Combing the aforemen…
We investigate the intraband nonlinear dynamics in doped bilayer graphene in the presence of strong, linearly-polarized, in-plane terahertz fields. We perform degenerate pump-probe experiments with 3.4 THz fields on doped bilayer graphene at low temperature (12 K) and find that when the pump is co-polarized with the probe beam, the differential pump-probe signal is almost double that found in the cross-polarized case. We show that the origin of this pump-induced anisotropy is the difference in the average electron effective mass in the probe direction when carriers are displaced in k-space by …
A highly efficient, practical approach to high-energy terahertz (THz) generation based on spectrally cascaded optical parametric amplification (THz-COPA) is introduced. The THz wave initially generated by difference frequency generation between a strong narrowband optical pump and optical seed (0.1-10% of pump energy) kick-starts a repeated or cascaded energy down-conversion of pump photons. This helps to greatly surpass the quantum-defect efficiency and results in exponential growth of THz energy over crystal length. In cryogenically cooled periodically poled lithium niobate, energy conversio…
Nonlinear frequency conversion provides an elegant method to detect photons in a spectral range which differs from the pump wavelength, making it highly attractive for photons with inherently low energy. Aside from the intensity of the light, represented by the number of photons, their phase provides important information and enables a plethora of applications. We present a phase-sensitive measurement method in the terahertz spectral range by only detecting visible light. Using the optical interference of frequency-converted photons and leftover pump photons of the involved ultrashort pulses, …
Using a 3D fully-vectorial nonlinear time-domain analysis we numerically investigate the generation of terahertz radiation by pumping a photonic crystal microcavity out of resonance. High quality factors and a quadratic susceptibility lead to few-cycle terahertz pulses via optical rectification. Material dispersion as well as linear and nonlinear anisotropy is fully accounted for.
Strong-field mid-infrared pump--terahertz (THz) probe spectroscopy has been proven as a powerful tool for light control of different orders in strongly correlated materials. We report the construction of an ultrafast broadband infrared pump--THz probe system in reflection geometry. A two-output optical parametric amplifier is used for generating mid-infrared pulses with GaSe as the nonlinear crystal. The setup is capable of pumping bulk materials at wavelengths ranging from 1.2 $μ$m to 15 $μ$m and beyond, and detecting the subtle, transient photoinduced changes in the reflected electric field …
Collinear phase-matched optical rectification is studied in ZnGeP$_{2}$ pumped with near-infrared light. The pump-intensity dependence is presented for three crystal lengths (0.3, 1.0 and 3.0 mm) to determine the effects of linear optical absorption, nonlinear optical absorption and terahertz free-carrier absorption on the generation. Critical parameters such as the coherence length (for velocity matching), dispersion length (for linear pulse broadening) and nonlinear length (for self-phase modulation) are determined for this material. These parameters provide insight into the upper limit of p…
High energy single- to few-cycle terahertz pulses enable the exploration of the frontier of science, such as electron acceleration, strong-field physics, and spectroscopy. One important method of generating such terahertz pulses is to use the tilted-pulse-front (TPF) technique. However, due to the non-collinear phase-matching, the large angular dispersion leads to a spatial and temporal break-up of the optical pump, limiting the terahertz generation efficiency and reducing the few-cycle character of the generated terahertz fields. To reduce the effects caused by angular dispersion, multiple sc…
Brunel harmonics appear in the optical response of an atom in process of laser-induced ionization, when the electron leaves the atom and is accelerated in the strong optical field. In contrast to recollision-based harmonics, the Brunel mechanism does not require the electron returning to the core. Here we show that in the presence of a strong ionizing terahertz (THz) field, even a weak driving field at the optical frequencies allow for generating Brunel harmonics effectively. The strong ionizing THz pump suppresses recollisions, making Brunel dominant in a wide spectral range. High-order Brune…
In this article, we explore how cryogenic cooling of the Ti:sapphire laser crystal greatly reduces thermal lensing by over an order of magnitude because of two factors: (i) the increase in the thermal conductivity of the crystal, and (ii) the decrease in the temperature dependence of the refractive index. We obtained analytical expression of the focal length of thermal lens for the pump inside the laser crystal being a Gaussian beam. Through analysis of the laser cavity stability, we found that in order for the relative difference between the optimal laser cavity path lengths in the horizontal…
In this paper, we first discuss the main types of noise in a typical pump-probe system, and then focus specifically on terahertz time domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) setups. We then introduce four statistical models for the noisy pulses obtained in such systems, and detail rigorous mathematical algorithms to de-noise such traces, find the proper averages and characterise various types of experimental noise. Finally, we perform a comparative analysis of the performance, advantages and limitations of the algorithms by testing them on the experimental data collected using a particular THz-TDS syste…
Development of chip-scale optical frequency comb with the coverage from ultra-violet (UV) to mid-infrared (MIR) wavelength is of great significance. To expand the comb spectrum into the challenging UV region, a material platform with high UV transparency is crucial. In this paper, crystalline aluminum nitride (AlN)-onsapphire film is demonstrated for efficient Kerr frequency comb generation. Near-infrared (NIR) comb with nearly octave-spanning coverage and low parametric threshold is achieved in continuous-wave pumped high-quality-factor AlN microring resonators. The competition between stimul…
Bridging the "terahertz (THz) gap" relies upon synthesizing arbitrary waveforms in the THz domain enabling applications that require both narrow band sources for sensing and few-cycle drives for classical and quantum objects. However, realization of custom-tailored waveforms needed for these applications is currently hindered due to limited flexibility for optical rectification of femtosecond pulses in bulk crystals. Here, we experimentally demonstrate that thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN) circuits provide a versatile solution for such waveform synthesis through combining the merits of complex…
High-power tunable lasers with good longitudinal and transverse modes are fundamental tools for exploring quantum physics. Here we report a high-power continuous-wave injection-locked titanium:sapphire laser with a low-loss cavity configuration, where only a laser crystal was installed in the laser cavity. Although the transverse mode was affected by a thermal lens formed in the laser crystal, the focal length of the thermal lens could be shifted via the temperature of the laser crystal holder or the pump power. As a result, we found a condition that 10 W single-frequency oscillation with a go…
We present a stable dual-wavelength vortex beam carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) with two spectral peaks separated by a few terahertz in diode-pumped Yb:CaGdAlO4 (CALGO) laser. The dual-wavelength spectrum is controlled by the pump power and off-axis loss in laser resonator, arising from the broad emission bandwidth of Yb:CALGO. The OAM beam is obtained by a pair of cylindrical lens that serves as an π/2 convertor for the high-order Hermite-Gaussian modes. The stability is verifed that the 1 h OAM beam with two spectral peaks at 1046.1 nm and 1057.2 nm (3.01 THz interval) can steadily o…
We construct a terahertz time-domain spectrometer (THz-TDS) system based on photoconductive antenna (PCA). A 800 nm Ti sapphire femtosecond laser with 80 MHz repetition rate provides the pump and probe laser pulse, which has a 45 fs pulse width (as short as 15 fs is available) and as much as 400 mW power. Two commercial PCAs with 34 um and 6 um gap size are used as the emitter and receiver, respectively. We characterize this system by measuring its absolute radiated THz power, spectral bandwidth, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), dynamic range and beam profile at the focal plane. We further analyze…
