We consider a nonlinear Robin problem driven by a nonhomogeneous differential operator, with reaction which exhibits the competition of two Carathéodory terms. One is parametric, $(p-1)$-sublinear with a partially concave nonlinearity near zero. The other is $(p-1)$-superlinear and has almost critical growth. Exploiting the special geometry of the problem, we prove a bifurcation-type result, describing the changes in the set of positive solutions as the parameter $λ>0$ varies.
According to the Schwarz symmetry principle, every harmonic function vanishing on a real analytic curve has an odd continuation, while a harmonic function satisfying homogeneous Neumann condition has the even continuation. There are different generalizations of the Schwarz symmetry principle. Most of them are dealing with homogeneous conditions and the Dirichlet case. Using a technique of Dirichlet to Neumann and Robin to Neumann operators, we derive reflection formulae for nonhomogeneous Neumann and Robin conditions from a reflection formula subject to a nonhomogeneous Dirichlet condition.
We consider the nonlinear Robin problem driven by a nonhomogeneous differential operator plus an indefinite potential. The reaction term is a Carathéodory function satisfying certain conditions only near zero. Using suitable truncation, comparison, and cut-off techniques, we show that the problem has a sequence of nodal solutions converging to zero in the $C^1(\overlineΩ)$-norm.
We study a nonlinear, nonhomogeneous elliptic equation with an asymmetric reaction term depending on a positive parameter, coupled with Robin boundary conditions. Under appropriate hypotheses on both the leading differential operator and the reaction, we prove that, if the parameter is small enough, the problem admits at least four nontrivial solutions: two of such solutions are positive, one is negative, and one is sign-changing. Our approach is variational, based on critical point theory, Morse theory, and truncation techniques.
We study a parametric Robin problem driven by a nonlinear nonhomogeneous differential operator and with a superlinear Carathéodory reaction term. We prove a bifurcation-type theorem for small values of the parameter. Also, we show that as the parameter $λ>0$ approaches zero we can find positive solutions with arbitrarily big and arbitrarily small Sobolev norm. Finally we show that for every admissible parameter value there is a smallest positive solution $u^*_λ$ of the problem and we investigate the properties of the map $λ\mapsto u^*_λ$.
We consider a nonlinear, nonhomogeneous Robin problem with an indefinite potential and a nonsmooth primitive in the reaction term. In fact, the right-hand side of the problem (reaction term) is the Clarke subdifferential of a locally Lipschitz integrand. We assume that asymptotically this term is resonant with respect the principal eigenvalue (from the left). We prove the existence of three nontrivial smooth solutions, two of constant sign and the third nodal. We also show the existence of extremal constant sign solutions. The tools come from nonsmooth critical point theory and from global opt…
We consider a nonlinear elliptic equation driven by a nonhomogeneous differential operator plus an indefinite potential. On the reaction term we impose conditions only near zero. Using variational methods, together with truncation and perturbation techniques and critical groups, we produce three nontrivial solutions with sign information. In the semilinear case we improve this result by obtaining a second nodal solution for a total of four nontrivial solutions. Finally, under a symmetry condition on the reaction term, we generate a whole sequence of distinct nodal solutions.
A recent article by Li and Lv considered fully nonlinear contraction of convex hypersurfaces by certain nonhomogeneous functions of curvature, showing convergence to points in finite time in cases where the speed is a function of a degree-one homogeneous, concave and inverse concave function of the principle curvatures. In this article we consider self-similar solutions to these and related curvature flows that are not homogeneous in the principle curvatures, finding various situations where closed, convex curvature-pinched hypersurfaces contracting self-similarly are necessarily spheres.
Polar differentiation matrices for the Laplace equation in the disk subjected to nonhomogeneous Dirichlet, Neumann and Robin boundary conditions and the biharmonic equation subjected to nonhomogeneous Dirichlet conditions
We consider a parametric semilinear Robin problem driven by the Laplacian plus an indefinite and unbounded potential. In the reaction, we have the competing effects of a concave term appearing with a negative sign and of an asymmetric asymptotically linear term which is resonant in the negative direction. Using variational methods together with truncation and perturbation techniques and Morse theory (critical groups) we prove two multiplicity theorems producing four and five respectively nontrivial smooth solutions when the parameter $λ>0$ is small.
We prove that the Robin ground state and the Robin torsion function are respectively log-concave and $\frac{1}{2}$-concave on an uniformly convex domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^N$ of class $\mathcal{C}^m$, with $[m -\frac{ N}{2}]\geq 4$, provided the Robin parameter exceeds a critical threshold. Such threshold depends on $N$, $m$, and on the geometry of $Ω$, precisely on the diameter and on the boundary curvatures up to order $m$.
In this paper, we develop some properties of the $a_{x,y}(.)$-Neumann derivative for the fractional $a_{x,y}(.)$-Laplacian operator. Therefore we prove the basic proprieties of the correspondent function spaces. In the second part of this paper, by means of Ekeland's variational principal and direct variational approach, we prove the existence of weak solutions for a nonlocal problem with nonhomogeneous Neumann and Robin boundary condition.
We deal with the existence of weak solutions for a mixed Neumann-Robin-Cauchy problem. The existence results are based on global-in-time estimates of approximating solutions, and the passage to the limit exploits compactness techniques. We investigate explicit estimates for solutions of the parabolic equations with nonhomogeneous boundary conditions and distributional right hand sides. The parabolic equation is of divergence form with discontinuous coefficients. We consider a nonlinear condition on a part of the boundary that the power laws (and the Robin boundary condition) appear as particul…
We consider a nonlinear boundary value problem driven by a nonhomogeneous differential operator. The problem exhibits competing nonlinearities with a superlinear (convex) contribution coming from the reaction term and a sublinear (concave) contribution coming from the parametric boundary (source) term. We show that for all small parameter values $λ>0$, the problem has at least five nontrivial smooth solutions, four of constant sign and one nodal. We also produce extremal constant sign solutions and determine their monotonicity and continuity properties as the parameter $λ>0$ varies. In the sem…
On a convex bounded Euclidean domain, the ground state for the Laplacian with Neumann boundary conditions is a constant, while the Dirichlet ground state is log-concave. The Robin eigenvalue problem can be considered as interpolating between the Dirichlet and Neumann cases, so it seems natural that the Robin ground state should have similar concavity properties. In this paper we show that this is false, by analysing the perturbation problem from the Neumann case. In particular we prove that on polyhedral convex domains, except in very special cases (which we completely classify) the variation …
We consider a parametric semilinear Robin problem driven by the Laplacian plus an indefinite potential. The reaction term involves competing nonlinearities. More precisely, it is the sum of a parametric sublinear (concave) term and a superlinear (convex) term. The superlinearity is not expressed via the Ambrosetti-Rabinowitz condition. Instead, a more general hypothesis is used. We prove a bifurcation-type theorem describing the set of positive solutions as the parameter $λ> 0$ varies. We also show the existence of a minimal positive solution $\tilde{u}_λ$ and determine the monotonicity and co…
We consider a nonlinear Dirichlet problem driven by a nonhomogeneous differential operator plus an indefinite potential. In the reaction we have the competing effects of a singular term and of concave and convex nonlinearities. In this paper the concave term is parametric. We prove a bifurcation-type theorem describing the changes in the set of positive solutions as the positive parameter $λ$ varies. This work continues our research published in arXiv:2004.12583, where $ξ\equiv 0 $ and in the reaction the parametric term is the singular one.
In this article it is proved the existence of similarity solutions for a one-phase Stefan problem with temperature-dependent thermal conductivity and a Robin condition at the fixed face. The temperature distribution is obtained through a generalized modified error function which is defined as the solution to a nonlinear ordinary differential problem of second order. It is proved that the latter has a unique non-negative bounded analytic solution when the parameter on which it depends assumes small positive values. Moreover, it is shown that the generalized modified error function is concave an…
Initial-boundary value problems for integrable nonlinear partial differential equations have become tractable in recent years due to the development of so-called unified transform techniques. The main obstruction to applying these methods in practice is that calculation of the spectral transforms of the initial and boundary data requires knowledge of too many boundary conditions, more than are required make the problem well-posed. The elimination of the unknown boundary values is frequently addressed in the spectral domain via the so-called global relation, and types of boundary conditions for…
