We establish a polynomial-time approximation algorithm for partition functions of quantum spin models at high temperature. Our algorithm is based on the quantum cluster expansion of Netočný and Redig and the cluster expansion approach to designing algorithms due to Helmuth, Perkins, and Regts. Similar results have previously been obtained by related methods, and our main contribution is a simple and slightly sharper analysis for the case of pairwise interactions on bounded-degree graphs.
We present a new FPTAS for the Subset Sum Ratio problem, which, given a set of integers, asks for two disjoint subsets such that the ratio of their sums is as close to $1$ as possible. Our scheme makes use of exact and approximate algorithms for the closely related Partition problem, hence any progress over those -- such as the recent improvement due to Bringmann and Nakos [SODA 2021] -- carries over to our FPTAS. Depending on the relationship between the size of the input set $n$ and the error margin $\varepsilon$, we improve upon the best currently known algorithm of Melissinos and Pagourtzi…
We study approximations of the partition function of dense graphical models. Partition functions of graphical models play a fundamental role is statistical physics, in statistics and in machine learning. Two of the main methods for approximating the partition function are Markov Chain Monte Carlo and Variational Methods. An impressive body of work in mathematics, physics and theoretical computer science provides conditions under which Markov Chain Monte Carlo methods converge in polynomial time. These methods often lead to polynomial time approximation algorithms for the partition function in …
We present a novel quantum algorithm for estimating Gibbs partition functions in sublinear time with respect to the logarithm of the size of the state space. This is the first speed-up of this type to be obtained over the seminal nearly-linear time algorithm of Štefankovič, Vempala and Vigoda [JACM, 2009]. Our result also preserves the quadratic speed-up in precision and spectral gap achieved in previous work by exploiting the properties of quantum Markov chains. As an application, we obtain new polynomial improvements over the best-known algorithms for computing the partition function of the …
We give a polynomial-time constant-factor approximation algorithm for maximum independent set for (axis-aligned) rectangles in the plane. Using a polynomial-time algorithm, the best approximation factor previously known is $O(\log\log n)$. The results are based on a new form of recursive partitioning in the plane, in which faces that are constant-complexity and orthogonally convex are recursively partitioned into a constant number of such faces.
We study the complexity of approximate counting Constraint Satisfaction Problems (#CSPs) in a bounded degree setting. Specifically, given a Boolean constraint language $Γ$ and a degree bound $Δ$, we study the complexity of #CSP$_Δ(Γ)$, which is the problem of counting satisfying assignments to CSP instances with constraints from $Γ$ and whose variables can appear at most $Δ$ times. Our main result shows that: (i) if every function in $Γ$ is affine, then #CSP$_Δ(Γ)$ is in FP for all $Δ$, (ii) otherwise, if every function in $Γ$ is in a class called IM$_2$, then for all sufficiently large $Δ$, #…
Approximating Subset Sum is a classic and fundamental problem in computer science and mathematical optimization. The state-of-the-art approximation scheme for Subset Sum computes a $(1-\varepsilon)$-approximation in time $\tilde{O}(\min\{n/\varepsilon, n+1/\varepsilon^2\})$ [Gens, Levner'78, Kellerer et al.'97]. In particular, a $(1-1/n)$-approximation can be computed in time $O(n^2)$. We establish a connection to Min-Plus-Convolution, a problem that is of particular interest in fine-grained complexity theory and can be solved naively in time $O(n^2)$. Our main result is that computing a $(1-1…
We investigate problems addressing combined connectivity augmentation and orientations settings. We give a polynomial-time 6-approximation algorithm for finding a minimum cost subgraph of an undirected graph $G$ that admits an orientation covering a nonnegative crossing $G$-supermodular demand function, as defined by Frank. An important example is $(k,\ell)$-edge-connectivity, a common generalization of global and rooted edge-connectivity. Our algorithm is based on a non-standard application of the iterative rounding method. We observe that the standard linear program with cut constraints is n…
Knapsack and Partition are two important additive problems whose fine-grained complexities in the $(1-\varepsilon)$-approximation setting are not yet settled. In this work, we make progress on both problems by giving improved algorithms. - Knapsack can be $(1 - \varepsilon)$-approximated in $\tilde O(n + (1/\varepsilon) ^ {2.2} )$ time, improving the previous $\tilde O(n + (1/\varepsilon) ^ {2.25} )$ by Jin (ICALP'19). There is a known conditional lower bound of $(n+\varepsilon)^{2-o(1)}$ based on $(\min,+)$-convolution hypothesis. - Partition can be $(1 - \varepsilon)$-approximated in $\tilde…
We study the problem of approximating the Ising model partition function with complex parameters on bounded degree graphs. We establish a deterministic polynomial-time approximation scheme for the partition function when the interactions and external fields are absolutely bounded close to zero. Furthermore, we prove that for this class of Ising models the partition function does not vanish. Our algorithm is based on an approach due to Barvinok for approximating evaluations of a polynomial based on the location of the complex zeros and a technique due to Patel and Regts for efficiently computin…
Let P be a d-dimensional n-point set. A Tverberg-partition of P is a partition of P into r sets P_1, ..., P_r such that the convex hulls conv(P_1), ..., conv(P_r) have non-empty intersection. A point in the intersection of the conv(P_i)'s is called a Tverberg point of depth r for P. A classic result by Tverberg implies that there always exists a Tverberg partition of size n/(d+1), but it is not known how to find such a partition in polynomial time. Therefore, approximate solutions are of interest. We describe a deterministic algorithm that finds a Tverberg partition of size n/4(d+1)^3 in time …
We present approximation algorithms for the following NP-hard optimization problems related to bottleneck spanning trees in metric spaces. 1. The disjoint bottleneck spanning tree problem: Given $n$ pairs of points in a metric space, find two disjoint trees each containing exactly one point from each pair and minimize the largest edge length (over all edges of both trees). It is known that approximating this problem by a factor better than 2 is NP-hard. We present a 4-approximation algorithm for this problem. This improves upon the previous best known approximation ratio of $9$. Our algorithm …
We describe two quantum algorithms to approximate the mean value of a black-box function. The first algorithm is novel and asymptotically optimal while the second is a variation on an earlier algorithm due to Aharonov. Both algorithms have their own strengths and caveats and may be relevant in different contexts. We then propose a new algorithm for approximating the median of a set of points over an arbitrary distance function.
We give an FPTAS for approximating the partition function of the hard-core model for bipartite graphs when there is sufficient imbalance in the degrees or fugacities between the sides $(L,R)$ of the bipartition. This includes, among others, the biregular case when $λ=1$ (approximating the number of independent sets of $G$) and $Δ_R \geq 7Δ_L \log(Δ_L)$. Our approximation algorithm is based on truncating the cluster expansion of a polymer model partition function that expresses the hard-core partition function in terms of deviations from independent sets that are empty on one side of the bipart…
We develop a simple and efficient algorithm for approximating the John Ellipsoid of a symmetric polytope. Our algorithm is near optimal in the sense that our time complexity matches the current best verification algorithm. We also provide the MATLAB code for further research.
We devise the first constant-factor approximation algorithm for finding an integral multi-commodity flow of maximum total value for instances where the supply graph together with the demand edges can be embedded on an orientable surface of bounded genus. This extends recent results for planar instances. Our techniques include an uncrossing algorithm, which is significantly more difficult than in the planar case, a partition of the cycles in the support of an LP solution into free homotopy classes, and a new rounding procedure for freely homotopic non-separating cycles.
We study the computational complexity of approximating the partition function of the ferromagnetic Ising model with the external field parameter $λ$ on the unit circle in the complex plane. Complex-valued parameters for the Ising model are relevant for quantum circuit computations and phase transitions in statistical physics, but have also been key in the recent deterministic approximation scheme for all $|λ|\neq 1$ by Liu, Sinclair, and Srivastava. Here, we focus on the unresolved complexity picture on the unit circle, and on the tantalising question of what happens around $λ=1$, where on one…
In this note, we describe a $α_{GW} + \tildeΩ(1/d^2)$-factor approximation algorithm for Max-Cut on weighted graphs of degree $\leq d$. Here, $α_{GW}\approx 0.878$ is the worst-case approximation ratio of the Goemans-Williamson rounding for Max-Cut. This improves on previous results for unweighted graphs by Feige, Karpinski, and Langberg and Florén. Our guarantee is obtained by a tighter analysis of the solution obtained by applying a natural local improvement procedure to the Goemans-Williamson rounding of the basic SDP strengthened with triangle inequalities.
We raise the question of approximating the compressibility of a string with respect to a fixed compression scheme, in sublinear time. We study this question in detail for two popular lossless compression schemes: run-length encoding (RLE) and Lempel-Ziv (LZ), and present sublinear algorithms for approximating compressibility with respect to both schemes. We also give several lower bounds that show that our algorithms for both schemes cannot be improved significantly. Our investigation of LZ yields results whose interest goes beyond the initial questions we set out to study. In particular, we p…
The edit distance between two strings is defined as the smallest number of insertions, deletions, and substitutions that need to be made to transform one of the strings to another one. Approximating edit distance in subquadratic time is "one of the biggest unsolved problems in the field of combinatorial pattern matching". Our main result is a quantum constant approximation algorithm for computing the edit distance in truly subquadratic time. More precisely, we give an $O(n^{1.858})$ quantum algorithm that approximates the edit distance within a factor of $7$. We further extend this result to a…
We give the first constant-factor approximation algorithm for Sparsest Cut with general demands in bounded treewidth graphs. In contrast to previous algorithms, which rely on the flow-cut gap and/or metric embeddings, our approach exploits the Sherali-Adams hierarchy of linear programming relaxations.
We introduce a novel algorithm for approximating the logarithm of the determinant of a symmetric positive definite (SPD) matrix. The algorithm is randomized and approximates the traces of a small number of matrix powers of a specially constructed matrix, using the method of Avron and Toledo~\cite{AT11}. From a theoretical perspective, we present additive and relative error bounds for our algorithm. Our additive error bound works for any SPD matrix, whereas our relative error bound works for SPD matrices whose eigenvalues lie in the interval $(θ_1,1)$, with $0<θ_1<1$; the latter setting was pro…
We consider the problem of approximating Quadratic O-1 Integer Programs with bounded number of constraints and non-negative constraint matrix entries, which we term as PIQP. We describe and analyze a randomized algorithm based on a program with hyperbolic constraints (a Second-Order Cone Programming -SOCP- formulation) that achieves an approximation ratio of $O(a_{max} \frac{n}{β(n)})$, where $a_{max}$ is the maximum size of an entry in the constraint matrix and $β(n) \leq \min_i{W_i} $, where $W_i$ are the constant terms that define the constraint inequalities. We note that by appropriately c…
We investigate the influences of variables on a Boolean function $f$ based on the quantum Bernstein-Vazirani algorithm. A previous paper (Floess et al. in Math. Struct. in Comp. Science 23: 386, 2013) has proved that if a $n$-variable Boolean function $f(x_1,\ldots,x_n)$ does not depend on an input variable $x_i$, using the Bernstein-Vazirani circuit to $f$ will always obtain an output $y$ that has a $0$ in the $i$th position. We generalize this result and show that after one time running the algorithm, the probability of getting a 1 in each position $i$ is equal to the dependence degree of $f…
The algorithm and complexity of approximating the permanent of a matrix is an extensively studied topic. Recently, its connection with quantum supremacy and more specifically BosonSampling draws special attention to the average-case approximation problem of the permanent of random matrices with zero or small mean value for each entry. Eldar and Mehraban (FOCS 2018) gave a quasi-polynomial time algorithm for random matrices with mean at least $1/\mathbf{\mathrm{polyloglog}} (n)$. In this paper, we improve the result by designing a deterministic quasi-polynomial time algorithm and a PTAS for ran…
We present a 6-approximation algorithm for the minimum-cost $k$-node connected spanning subgraph problem, assuming that the number of nodes is at least $k^3(k-1)+k$. We apply a combinatorial preprocessing, based on the Frank-Tardos algorithm for $k$-outconnectivity, to transform any input into an instance such that the iterative rounding method gives a 2-approximation guarantee. This is the first constant-factor approximation algorithm even in the asymptotic setting of the problem, that is, the restriction to instances where the number of nodes is lower bounded by a function of $k$.
We show an algorithm for computing the permanent of a random matrix with vanishing mean in quasi-polynomial time. Among special cases are the Gaussian, and biased-Bernoulli random matrices with mean 1/lnln(n)^{1/8}. In addition, we can compute the permanent of a random matrix with mean 1/poly(ln(n)) in time 2^{O(n^{\eps})} for any small constant \eps>0. Our algorithm counters the intuition that the permanent is hard because of the "sign problem" - namely the interference between entries of a matrix with different signs. A major open question then remains whether one can provide an efficient al…
Finding the diameter of a dataset in multidimensional Euclidean space is a well-established problem, with well-known algorithms. However, most of the algorithms found in the literature do not scale well with large values of data dimension, so the time complexity grows exponentially in most cases, which makes these algorithms impractical. Therefore, we implemented 4 simple greedy algorithms to be used for approximating the diameter of a multidimensional dataset; these are based on minimum/maximum l2 norms, hill climbing search, Tabu search and Beam search approaches, respectively. The time comp…
In this paper, we present a polynomial-time algorithm that approximates sufficiently high-value Max 2-CSPs on sufficiently dense graphs to within $O(N^{\varepsilon})$ approximation ratio for any constant $\varepsilon > 0$. Using this algorithm, we also achieve similar results for free games, projection games on sufficiently dense random graphs, and the Densest $k$-Subgraph problem with sufficiently dense optimal solution. Note, however, that algorithms with similar guarantees to the last algorithm were in fact discovered prior to our work by Feige et al. and Suzuki and Tokuyama. In addition, o…
The $k$'th frequency moment of a sequence of integers is defined as $F_k = \sum_j n_j^k$, where $n_j$ is the number of times that $j$ occurs in the sequence. Here we study the quantum complexity of approximately computing the frequency moments in two settings. In the query complexity setting, we wish to minimise the number of queries to the input used to approximate $F_k$ up to relative error $ε$. We give quantum algorithms which outperform the best possible classical algorithms up to quadratically. In the multiple-pass streaming setting, we see the elements of the input one at a time, and see…
We present a $(1+ε)$-approximation algorithm running in $O(f(ε)\cdot n \log^4 n)$ time for finding the diameter of an undirected planar graph with non-negative edge lengths.
In the regime of bounded transportation costs, additive approximations for the optimal transport problem are reduced (rather simply) to relative approximations for positive linear programs, resulting in faster additive approximation algorithms for optimal transport.
We present approximation algorithms for almost all variants of the multi-criteria traveling salesman problem (TSP). First, we devise randomized approximation algorithms for multi-criteria maximum traveling salesman problems (Max-TSP). For multi-criteria Max-STSP, where the edge weights have to be symmetric, we devise an algorithm with an approximation ratio of 2/3 - eps. For multi-criteria Max-ATSP, where the edge weights may be asymmetric, we present an algorithm with a ratio of 1/2 - eps. Our algorithms work for any fixed number k of objectives. Furthermore, we present a deterministic algori…
A recent result of Eden, Levi, and Ron (ECCC 2015) provides a sublinear time algorithm to estimate the number of triangles in a graph. Given an undirected graph $G$, one can query the degree of a vertex, the existence of an edge between vertices, and the $i$th neighbor of a vertex. Suppose the graph has $n$ vertices, $m$ edges, and $t$ triangles. In this model, Eden et al provided a $O(\poly(\eps^{-1}\log n)(n/t^{1/3} + m^{3/2}/t))$ time algorithm to get a $(1+\eps)$-multiplicative approximation for $t$, the triangle count. This paper provides a simpler algorithm with the same running time (up…
Cooperative Greedy Pursuit Strategies are considered for approximating a signal partition subjected to a global constraint on sparsity. The approach aims at producing a high quality sparse approximation of the whole signal, using highly coherent redundant dictionaries. The cooperation takes place by ranking the partition units for their sequential stepwise approximation, and is realized by means of i)forward steps for the upgrading of an approximation and/or ii) backward steps for the corresponding downgrading. The advantage of the strategy is illustrated by producing high quality approximatio…
We present a randomized approximation algorithm for computing traveling salesperson tours in undirected regular graphs. Given an $n$-vertex, $k$-regular graph, the algorithm computes a tour of length at most $\left(1+\frac{7}{\ln k-O(1)}\right)n$, with high probability, in $O(nk \log k)$ time. This improves upon a recent result by Vishnoi (\cite{Vishnoi12}, FOCS 2012) for the same problem, in terms of both approximation factor, and running time. The key ingredient of our algorithm is a technique that uses edge-coloring algorithms to sample a cycle cover with $O(n/\log k)$ cycles with high prob…

We study the complexity of approximating the multimarginal optimal transport (MOT) distance, a generalization of the classical optimal transport distance, considered here between $m$ discrete probability distributions supported each on $n$ support points. First, we show that the standard linear programming (LP) representation of the MOT problem is not a minimum-cost flow problem when $m \geq 3$. This negative result implies that some combinatorial algorithms, e.g., network simplex method, are not suitable for approximating the MOT problem, while the worst-case complexity bound for the determin…
We present ABRA, a suite of algorithms that compute and maintain probabilistically-guaranteed, high-quality, approximations of the betweenness centrality of all nodes (or edges) on both static and fully dynamic graphs. Our algorithms rely on random sampling and their analysis leverages on Rademacher averages and pseudodimension, fundamental concepts from statistical learning theory. To our knowledge, this is the first application of these concepts to the field of graph analysis. The results of our experimental evaluation show that our approach is much faster than exact methods, and vastly outp…
Edit distance is a measure of similarity of two strings based on the minimum number of character insertions, deletions, and substitutions required to transform one string into the other. The edit distance can be computed exactly using a dynamic programming algorithm that runs in quadratic time. Andoni, Krauthgamer, and Onak (2010) gave a nearly linear time algorithm that approximates edit distance within an approximation factor $\text{poly}(\log n)$. In this paper, we provide an algorithm with running time $\tilde{O}(n^{2-2/7})$ that approximates the edit distance within a constant factor.
We give a short proof that any comparison-based n^(1-epsilon)-approximation algorithm for the 1-dimensional Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP) requires Omega(n log n) comparisons.
We present a near-optimal reduction from approximately counting the cardinality of a discrete set to approximately sampling elements of the set. An important application of our work is to approximating the partition function $Z$ of a discrete system, such as the Ising model, matchings or colorings of a graph. The typical approach to estimating the partition function $Z(β^*)$ at some desired inverse temperature $β^*$ is to define a sequence, which we call a {\em cooling schedule}, $β_0=0<β_1<...<β_\ell=β^*$ where Z(0) is trivial to compute and the ratios $Z(β_{i+1})/Z(β_i)$ are easy to estimate…
We consider the problem of approximating the arboricity of a graph $G= (V,E)$, which we denote by $\mathsf{arb}(G)$, in sublinear time, where the arboricity of a graph is the minimal number of forests required to cover its edges. An algorithm for this problem may perform degree and neighbor queries, and is allowed a small error probability. We design an algorithm that outputs an estimate $\hatα$, such that with probability $1-1/\textrm{poly}(n)$, $\mathsf{arb}(G)/c\log^2 n \leq \hatα \leq \mathsf{arb}(G)$, where $n=|V|$ and $c$ is a constant. The expected query complexity and running time of t…
The MEG (minimum equivalent graph) problem is, given a directed graph, to find a small subset of the edges that maintains all reachability relations between nodes. The problem is NP-hard. This paper gives an approximation algorithm with performance guarantee of pi^2/6 ~ 1.64. The algorithm and its analysis are based on the simple idea of contracting long cycles. (This result is strengthened slightly in ``On strongly connected digraphs with bounded cycle length'' (1996).) The analysis applies directly to 2-Exchange, a simple ``local improvement'' algorithm, showing that its performance guarante…
Graph connectivity and network design problems are among the most fundamental problems in combinatorial optimization. The minimum spanning tree problem, the two edge-connected spanning subgraph problem (2-ECSS) and the tree augmentation problem (TAP) are all examples of fundamental well-studied network design tasks that postulate different initial states of the network and different assumptions on the reliability of network components. In this paper we motivate and study \emph{Flexible Graph Connectivity} (FGC), a problem that mixes together both the modeling power and the complexities of all …
We present a novel approximation algorithm for $k$-median that achieves an approximation guarantee of $1+\sqrt{3}+ε$, improving upon the decade-old ratio of $3+ε$. Our approach is based on two components, each of which, we believe, is of independent interest. First, we show that in order to give an $α$-approximation algorithm for $k$-median, it is sufficient to give a \emph{pseudo-approximation algorithm} that finds an $α$-approximate solution by opening $k+O(1)$ facilities. This is a rather surprising result as there exist instances for which opening $k+1$ facilities may lead to a significant…
We consider computing the longest palindrome in a text of length $n$ in the streaming model, where the characters arrive one-by-one, and we do not have random access to the input. While computing the answer exactly using sublinear memory is not possible in such a setting, one can still hope for a good approximation guarantee. We focus on the two most natural variants, where we aim for either additive or multiplicative approximation of the length of the longest palindrome. We first show that there is no point in considering Las Vegas algorithms in such a setting, as they cannot achieve sublinea…
In this work, we consider the Combinatorial RNA Design problem, a minimal instance of the RNA design problem which aims at finding a sequence that admits a given target as its unique base pair maximizing structure. We provide complete characterizations for the structures that can be designed using restricted alphabets. Under a classic four-letter alphabet, we provide a complete characterization of designable structures without unpaired bases. When unpaired bases are allowed, we provide partial characterizations for classes of designable/undesignable structures, and show that the class of desig…
Given a text $T$ of length $n$ and a pattern $P$ of length $m$, the approximate pattern matching problem asks for computation of a particular \emph{distance} function between $P$ and every $m$-substring of $T$. We consider a $(1\pm\varepsilon)$ multiplicative approximation variant of this problem, for $\ell_p$ distance function. In this paper, we describe two $(1+\varepsilon)$-approximate algorithms with a runtime of $\widetilde{O}(\frac{n}{\varepsilon})$ for all (constant) non-negative values of $p$. For constant $p \ge 1$ we show a deterministic $(1+\varepsilon)$-approximation algorithm. Pre…
The noise sensitivity of a Boolean function $f: \{0,1\}^n \rightarrow \{0,1\}$ is one of its fundamental properties. A function of a positive noise parameter $δ$, it is denoted as $NS_δ[f]$. Here we study the algorithmic problem of approximating it for monotone $f$, such that $NS_δ[f] \geq 1/n^{C}$ for constant $C$, and where $δ$ satisfies $1/n \leq δ\leq 1/2$. For such $f$ and $δ$, we give a randomized algorithm performing $O\left(\frac{\min(1,\sqrt{n} δ\log^{1.5} n) }{NS_δ[f]} \text{poly}\left(\frac{1}ε\right)\right)$ queries and approximating $NS_δ[f]$ to within a multiplicative factor of $…
