We find that the cosmic microwave background temperature and polarization power spectra measurements from Planck constrain the parameter $Ω_bh^2$ mostly through: A) the amplitude of Thomson scattering and B) a factor that ensures Thomson scattering does not violate momentum conservation of the baryon-photon fluid. This allows us to obtain two distinct but comparably strong constraints on $Ω_b h^2$ from the Planck data alone. They are consistent, showing robustness of the Planck $Ω_b h^2$ constraint. We can alternatively rephrase these constraints as A) the change of the Thomson scattering cross section since recombination is less than $\sim 2\%$ and B) momentum during recombination is conserved to better than $\sim 2\%$ by Thomson scattering. Decoupling the eight various ways in which $Ω_b h^2$ affects the Planck data leads to $H_0$ only slightly higher than in the standard analysis, $(68.3 \pm 1.6)\,\mathrm{km/s/Mpc}$. The overall consistency of all $Ω_b h^2$ constraints does not suggest any problem with the standard cosmological model.
Planck's Cosmic Microwave Background temperature and polarization observations are the premier dataset for constraining cosmological models. Cosmic variance limited temperature at large and intermediate scales today dominates the constraints; polarization provides additional constraining power and further scrutiny of the models. To complete this picture from Planck, ground-based experiments, such as the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) and the South Pole Telescope (SPT) continue to add temperature and polarization measurements at small scales, allowing for the extraction of competitive cosmol…
We perform a comparison of WMAP 9-year (WMAP9) and Planck 2015 cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature power spectra across multipoles $30\leq\ell\leq1200$. We generate simulations to estimate the correlation between the two datasets due to cosmic variance from observing the same sky. We find that their spectra are consistent within $1σ$. While we do not implement the optimal "$C^{-1}$" estimator on WMAP maps as in the WMAP9 analysis, we demonstrate that the change of pixel weighting only shifts our results at most at the $0.66σ$ level. We also show that changing the fiducial power spect…
In this work we explore the possibility of variations in the primordial scalar power spectrum around the power-law shape, as predicted by single-field slow-roll inflationary scenarios. We search for the trace of these fluctuations in a semi-blind, model-independent way on the observations of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) sky. In particular we use two sets of perturbation patterns, specific patterns with typical features such as oscillations, bumps and transitions, as well as perturbation modes, constructed from the eigenanalysis of the forecasted or measured covariance of perturbation …
In order to better analyse the polarization of the cosmic microwave background (CMB), which is dominated by emission from our Galaxy, we need tools that can detect residual foregrounds in cleaned CMB maps. Galactic foregrounds introduce statistical anisotropy and directionality to the polarization pseudo-vectors of the CMB, which can be investigated by using the D statistic of Bunn and Scott. This statistic is rapidly computable and capable of investigating a broad range of data products for directionality. We demonstrate the application of this statistic to detecting foregrounds in polarizati…
Primordial magnetic fields can change the recombination history of the universe by inducing clumping in the baryon density at small scales. They were recently proposed as a candidate model to relieve the Hubble tension. We investigate the consistency of the constraints on a clumping factor parameter $b$ in a simplistic model, using the latest CMB data from Planck, ACT DR4 and SPT-3G 2018. For the combined CMB data alone, we find no evidence for clumping being different from zero, though when adding a prior on $H_0$ based on the latest distance-ladder analysis of the SH0ES team, we report a wea…
The cosmic expansion is computed for various dynamical vacuum models $Λ(H)$ and confronted to the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) power spectrum from Planck. We also combined CMB in a joint analysis with other probes in order to place constraints on the cosmological parameters of the dynamical vacuum models. We find that all $Λ(H)$ models are very efficient and in very good agreement with the data. Considering that the interaction term of the dark sector is given in terms of matter and radiation densities, we find that the corresponding $Λ(H)$ model shows a small but non-zero deviation from …
In this study, we apply the Analytical method of Blind Separation (ABS) of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) from foregrounds to estimate the CMB temperature power spectrum from multi-frequency microwave maps. We test the robustness of the ABS estimator and assess the accuracy of the power spectrum recovery by using realistic simulations based on the seven-frequency Planck data, including various frequency-dependent and spatially-varying foreground components (synchrotron, free-free, thermal dust and anomalous microwave emission), as well as an uncorrelated Gaussian-distributed instrumenta…
Testing consistency of general relativity with kinematic and dynamical probes
The small but measurable effect of weak gravitational lensing on the cosmic microwave background radiation provide information about the large-scale distribution of matter in the universe. We use the all sky distribution of matter, as represented by the {\em convergence map} that is inferred from CMB lensing measurement by Planck survey, to test the fundamental assumption of Statistical Isotropy (SI) of the universe. For the analysis we use the $α$ statistic that is devised from the contour Minkowski tensor, a tensorial generalization of the scalar Minkowski functional, the contour length. In …
The next generation of Cosmic Microwave Background experiments will produce cosmic variance limited observations over a large fraction of sky and for a large range of multipoles. In this work we discuss different consistency tests that can be performed with the upcoming data from the Simons Observatory and the Planck data. We quantify the level of expected cosmological parameter shifts probed by these tests. We discuss the effect of difference in frequency of observation and present forecasts on a direct measurement of the Planck T-to-E leakage beam. We find that instrumental systematics in ei…
The canonical acoustic dark energy model (cADE), which is based on a scalar field with a canonical kinetic term that rapidly converts potential to kinetic energy around matter radiation equality, alleviates the Hubble tension found in $Λ$CDM. We show that it successfully passes new consistency tests in the CMB damping tail provided by the ACT data, while being increasingly constrained and distinguished from alternate mechanisms by the improved CMB acoustic polarization data from Planck. The best fit cADE model to a suite of cosmological observations, including the SH0ES $H_0$ measurement, has …
A significant tension has become manifest between the current expansion rate of our Universe measured from the cosmic microwave background by the Planck satellite and from local distance probes, which has prompted for interpretations of that as evidence of new physics. Within conventional cosmology a likely source of this discrepancy is identified here as a matter density fluctuation around the cosmic average of the 40 Mpc environment in which the calibration of Supernovae Type Ia separations with Cepheids and nearby absolute distance anchors is performed. Inhomogeneities on this scale easily …
We test the mutual consistency between the baryon acoustic oscillation measurements from the eBOSS SDSS final release, as well as the Pantheon supernova compilation in a model independent fashion using Gaussian process regression. We also test their joint consistency with the $Λ$CDM model, also in a model independent fashion. We also use Gaussian process regression to reconstruct the expansion history that is preferred by these two datasets. While this methodology finds no significant preference for model flexibility beyond $Λ$CDM, we are able to generate a number of reconstructed expansion hi…
We present angular power spectra and cosmological parameter constraints derived from the Planck PR4 (NPIPE) maps of the Cosmic Microwave Background. NPIPE, released by the Planck Collaboration in 2020, is a new processing pipeline for producing calibrated frequency maps from Planck data. We have created new versions of the CamSpec likelihood using these maps and applied them to constrain LCDM and single-parameter extensions. We find excellent consistency between NPIPE and the Planck 2018 maps at the parameter level, showing that the Planck cosmology is robust to substantial changes in the mapm…
The Hubble tension might be resolved by injecting a new energy component, called Early Dark Energy (EDE), prior to recombination. An Anti-de Sitter (AdS) phase around recombination can make the injected energy decay faster, which thus allows a higher EDE fraction (so larger $H_0$) while prevents degrading the CMB fit. In this work, we test the AdS-EDE model with CMB and Large-Scale Structure (LSS) data. Our CMB dataset consists of low-$\ell$ part of Planck TT spectrum and SPTpol polarization and lensing measurements, since this dataset predicts the CMB lensing effect consistent with $Λ$CDM exp…
We consider a quintessence model with Yukawa interaction between dark energy and dark matter and constrain this model by employing the recent cosmological data including the updated cosmic microwave background (CMB) measurements from Planck 2015, the weak gravitational lensing measurements from Kilo Degree Survey (KiDS) and redshift-space distortions. We find that an interaction in the dark sector is compatible with observations. The updated Planck data can significantly improve the constraints compared with the previous results from Planck 2013, while the KiDS data has less constraining power…
The results of joint analyses of available cosmological data have motivated an important debate about a possible detection of a non-zero spatial curvature. If confirmed, such a result would imply a change in our present understanding of cosmic evolution with important theoretical and observational consequences. In this paper we discuss the legitimacy of carrying out joint analyses with the currently available data sets and explore their implications for a non-flat universe and extensions of the standard cosmological model. We use a robust tension estimator to perform a quantitative analysis of…
Testing deviations from the $Λ$CDM model using the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) power spectra requires a pristine understanding of instrumental systematics. In this work we discuss the properties of a new observable ${\cal R}^{TE}_{\ell}$, the correlation coefficient of temperature and E modes. We find that this observable is mostly unaffected by systematics introducing multiplicative biases such as errors in calibration, polarisation efficiency, beam and transfer function measurements. We discuss the dependency of this observable on the cosmological model and derive its statistical prope…
Here we test the predictions of the theory of the origin of the universe from the landscape multiverse, against the 2015 Planck data, for the case of the Hilltop class of inflationary models, for $p=4$ and $p=6$. By considering the quantum entanglement correction of the multiverse, we can place just a lower limit on the local 'SUSY-breaking' scale, respectively $b>8.7\times10^6 GeV$ at $95 \%$ c.l. and $b>1.3\times10^8 GeV$ at $95 \%$ c.l. from Planck TT+lowP, so the case with multiverse correction is statistically indistinguishable from the case with an unmodified inflation. We find that the …
