In this letter, the effects of dark radiation (DR) are tested. Theoretically, the phase-space analysis method is applied to check whether the model is consist with the history of our universe which shows positive results. Observationally, by using the observational data ($SNLS$ (SuperNovae Legacy Survey), $WMAP9$(Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe 9 Years Result), $PLANCK$ (Planck First Data Release), $BAO$ (Baryon Acoustic Oscillations), $H(z)$ (Hubble Parameter Data) and $BBN$ (Big Bang Nucleosynthesis)), the dark radiation is found to have the effect of wiping out the tension between the $SNLS$ data and the other data in flat $ΛCDM$ model. The effects of dark radiation also make the best fit value of $N_{eff}$ slightly larger than 3.04.
This paper has been withdrawn by the author. The velocity structure of the broad-line region is reflective of the radiation pressure over much longer timescales than are probed by year-to-year changes in reverberation mapping results. Hence, the paper's test of the Marconi et al. model is not valid.
The effect of light refraction in a galaxy halo of dark matter, described by profiles of Navarro-Frenk-White and Burkett, was considered. Powers of the Cherenkov radiation for the refractive indexes of gravitational fields with these profiles were calculated. It was shown that correspondent radiation temperature in the X-rays range have the magnitude about some microKelvins. It was also marked that its detection may be the criteria on choosing the preferable dark matter density distribution in a galaxy.
Recent cosmological data have provided evidence for a "dark" relativistic background at high statistical significance. Parameterized in terms of the number of relativistic degrees of freedom Neff, however, the current data seems to indicate a higher value than the one expected in the standard scenario based on three active neutrinos. This dark radiation component can be characterized not only by its abundance but also by its clustering properties, as its effective sound speed and its viscosity parameter. It is therefore crucial to study the correlations among the dark radiation properties and …
In this work, we study a new quintessence model associated with non-Abelian gauge fields, minimally coupled to Einstein gravity. This gauge theory has been recently introduced and studied as an inflationary model, called gauge-flation. Here, however, we are interested in the late time cosmology of the model in the presence of matter and radiation to explain the present time accelerating Universe. During the radiation and matter eras, the gauge field tracks radiation and basically acts like a dark radiation sector. As we approach lower redshifts, the dark component takes the form of a dark ener…
Sterile neutrino dark matter is expected to suppress structure formation at small astrophysical scales. The details of the suppression depend on the sterile neutrino production mechanism in the early universe. In this proceeding, we focus on the most popular cases of resonant production (via the mixing between active and sterile neutrinos) and scalar decay production (via the decay of a hypothetical scalar singlet). We first review current constraints from structure formation before discussing how the sterile neutrino dark matter hypothesis can alleviate the overabundance problem of dwarf gala…
In this paper, we conduct a search in the latest large-scale structure measurements for signatures of the dark matter-dark radiation interaction proposed by Buen-Abad et al. (2015). We show that prior claims of a detection of this interaction rely on a use of the SZ cluster mass function that ignores uncertainty in the mass-observable relationship. Including this uncertainty we find that the inferred level of interaction remains consistent with the data, but so does zero interaction; i.e., there is no longer a detection. We also point out that inference of the shape and amplitude of the matter…
In this work, we further investigate the family of $f(R)$ dark energy models that can exactly mimic the same background expansion history as that of the $Λ$CDM model. We study the large scale structure in the $f(R)$ gravity using the full set cosmological perturbation equations. We investigate the structure formation in both the spatially flat and curved Universe. We also confront our model with the latest observations and conduct a Markov Chain Monte Carlo analysis on the parameter space.
The accumulation of dark matter particles near the primordial black holes starts at the radiation-dominated cosmological stage and produces the central density spikes. The spikes can be the bright gamma-ray sources due to dark matter annihilation. We present the self-consistent derivation of the equation of motion of particle in the metrics of primordial black hole immersed into cosmological background. By numerical solution of this equation we find the central dark matter density profile. The density growth is suppressed in the central part of the profile compared with previous calculations.
The cosmic expansion history proceeds in broad terms from a radiation dominated epoch to matter domination to an accelerated, dark energy dominated epoch. We investigate whether intermittent periods of acceleration are possible in the early universe -- between Big Bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) and recombination and beyond. We establish that the standard picture is remarkably robust: observations of anisotropies in the cosmic microwave background exclude any extra period of accelerated expansion between 1 \leq z \lesssim 10^5 (corresponding to 5\times10^{-4}\ {\rm eV} \leq T \lesssim 25\ {\rm eV})…
Constraints on the expansion history of the universe from measurements of cosmological distances make predictions for large-scale structure growth. Since these predictions depend on assumptions about dark energy evolution and spatial curvature, they can be used to test general classes of dark energy models by comparing predictions for those models with direct measurements of the growth history. I present predictions from current distance measurements for the growth history of dark energy models including a cosmological constant and quintessence. Although a time-dependent dark energy equation o…
Coupling dark energy to dark matter provides one of the simplest way to effectively modify gravity at large scales without strong constraints from local (i.e. solar system) observations. Models of coupled dark energy have been studied several times in the past and are already significantly constrained by cosmic microwave background experiments. In this paper we estimate the constraints that future large-scale observations will be able to put on the coupling and in general on all the parameters of the model. We combine cosmic microwave background, tomographic weak lensing, redshift distortions …
Recent cosmological data analyses hint at the presence of an extra relativistic energy component in the early universe. This component is often parametrized as an excess of the effective neutrino number N_{eff} over the standard value of 3.046. The excess relativistic energy could be an indication for an extra (sterile) neutrino, but early dark energy and barotropic dark energy also contribute to the relativistic degrees of freedom. We examine the capabilities of current and future data to constrain and discriminate between these explanations, and to detect the early dark energy density associ…
The growth rate of large scale structure can probe whether dark matter clusters at gravitational strength or deviates from this, e.g. due to self interactions. Measurement of the growth rate through redshift space distortions in galaxy redshift surveys constrains the clustering strength, and its redshift dependence. We compare such effects on growth to those from high redshift deviations (e.g. early dark energy) or modified gravity, and give a simple, highly accurate analytic prescription. Current observations can constrain the dark matter clustering strength to F_{cl}=0.99\pm0.02 of standard,…
We show that the scattering of a general spin-0 sector of dark radiation off the pre-recombination thermal plasma results in undetectably small spectral distortions of the Cosmic Microwave Background.
Results from the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP), Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) and recently from the South Pole Telescope (SPT) have indicated the possible existence of an extra radiation component in addition to the well known three neutrino species predicted by the Standard Model of particle physics. In this paper, we explore the possibility of the apparent extra dark radiation being linked directly to the physics of cold dark matter (CDM). In particular, we consider a generic scenario where dark radiation, as a result of an interaction, is produced directly by a fraction of…
We present a unified dark fluid model to describe the possible evolutionary behavior of $ΔN_\mathrm{eff}$ in dark radiation. This model can be viewed as an interacting model for the dark sectors, in which dark matter interacts with dark radiation. We show that the evolution of $ΔN_\mathrm{eff}$ can be nicely explained without some drawbacks, such as the blowup of $ΔN_\mathrm{eff}$ and the non-vanishing interaction at the late time.
Recent cosmological observations indicate the existence of extra light species, i.e., dark radiation. In this paper we show that signatures of the dark radiation are imprinted in the spectrum of inflationary gravitational waves. If the dark radiation is produced by the decay of a massive particle, high frequency mode of the gravitational waves are suppressed. In addition, due to the effect of the anisotropic stress caused by the dark radiation, a dip in the gravitational wave spectrum may show up at the frequency which enters the horizon at the time of the dark radiation production. Once the g…
One of the open questions in modern cosmology is the small scale crisis of the cold dark matter paradigm. Increasing attention has recently been devoted to self-interacting dark matter models as a possible answer. However, solving the so-called "missing satellites" problem requires in addition the presence of an extra relativistic particle (dubbed dark radiation) scattering with dark matter in the early universe. Here we investigate the impact of different theoretical models devising dark matter dark radiation interactions on large scale cosmological observables. We use cosmic microwave backgr…
We propose a new class of dark matter models with unusual phenomenology. What is ordinary about our models is that dark matter particles are WIMPs, they are weakly coupled to the Standard Model and have weak scale masses. What is unusual is that they come in multiplets of a new "dark" non-Abelian gauge group with milli-weak coupling. The massless dark gluons of this dark gauge group contribute to the energy density of the universe as a form of weakly self-interacting dark radiation. In this paper we explore the consequences of having i.) dark matter in multiplets ii.) self-interacting dark rad…
Recent cosmological data favour additional relativistic degrees of freedom beyond the three active neutrinos and photons, often referred to as "dark radiation". Extensions of the SM involving TeV-scale Z' gauge bosons generically contain superweakly interacting light right-handed neutrinos which can constitute this dark radiation. In this letter we confront the requirement on the parameters of the E6 Z' models to account for the present evidence of dark radiation with the already existing constraints from searches for new neutral gauge bosons at LHC7.
An extra dark radiation component can be present in the universe in the form of sterile neutrinos, axions or other very light degrees of freedom which may interact with the dark matter sector. We derive here the cosmological constraints on the dark radiation abundance, on its effective velocity and on its viscosity parameter from current data in dark radiation-dark matter coupled models. The cosmological bounds on the number of extra dark radiation species do not change significantly when considering interacting schemes. We also find that the constraints on the dark radiation effective velocit…
Although Planck data supports the standard ΛCDM model, it still allows for the presence of Dark Radiation corresponding up to about half an extra standard neutrino species. We propose a scenario for obtaining a fractional "effective neutrino species" from a thermally produced particle which decays into a much lighter stable relic plus standard fermions. At lifetimes much longer than 1 sec, both the relic particles and the non-thermal neutrino component contribute to Dark Radiation. By increasing the stable-to-unstable particle mass ratio, the relic particle no longer acts as Dark Radiation but…
If even a relatively small number of black holes were created in the early universe, they will constitute an increasingly large fraction of the total energy density as space expands. It is thus well-motivated to consider scenarios in which the early universe included an era in which primordial black holes dominated the total energy density. Within this context, we consider Hawking radiation as a mechanism to produce both dark radiation and dark matter. If the early universe included a black hole dominated era, we find that Hawking radiation will produce dark radiation at a level $ΔN_{\rm eff} …
Although the standard ΛCDM model describes the cosmic microwave background radiation and the large scale structure of the Universe with great success, it has some tensions with observations in the effective number of neutrino species (dark radiation) and the number of small scale structures (overabundance problem). Here we propose a scenario which can relax these tensions by producing both dark matter and dark radiation by late decays of heavy particle. Thanks to the generation mechanism, dark matters are rather warm so that the small-scale structure problem is resolved. This scenario can be n…
Interaction between dark energy and dark matter is probed through deviation from the virial equilibrium for two relaxed clusters: A586 and A1689. The evaluation of the virial equilibrium is performed using realistic density profiles. The virial ratios found for the more realistic density profiles are consistent with the absence of interaction.
The standard paradigm of collisionless cold dark matter is in tension with measurements on large scales. In particular, the best fit values of the Hubble rate $H_0$ and the matter density perturbation $σ_8$ inferred from the cosmic microwave background seem inconsistent with the results from direct measurements. We show that both problems can be solved in a framework in which dark matter consists of two distinct components, a dominant component and a subdominant component. The primary component is cold and collisionless. The secondary component is also cold, but interacts strongly with dark ra…
Interacting Dark Energy and Dark Matter is used to go beyond the standard cosmology. We base our arguments on Planck data and conclude that an interaction is compatible with the observations and can provide a strong argument towards consistency of different values of cosmological parameters.
It has been thought that only light species could behave as radiation and account for the dark radiation observed recently by Planck, WMAP9, South Pole and ATACAMA telescopes. In this work we will show that GeV scale WIMPs can plausibly account for the dark radiation as well. Heavy WIMPs might mimic the effect of a half neutrino species if some of their fraction were produced non-thermally after the thermal freeze-out. In addition, we will show how BBN, CMB and Structure Formation bounds might be circumvented.
We show that the Stephenson-Kilmister-Yang (SKY) equation combined with Camenzind's matter current term naturally provides the cosmological constant and dark radiation as integration constants of the SKYC field equation. To characterize the property of the dark radiation, we develop a method to separate it from the ordinary radiation. We found a special property of Camenzind's matter current, namely that the solution space for radiation in fact belongs to that of the vacuum solution of SKY equation. We also found that his matter current does not obey the conservation condition suggested by Kil…
Primordial black holes in the mass range from $10^{-5}$ to $10^9$ g might have existed in the early universe. Via their evaporation mechanism (completed before Big Bang Nucleosynthesis), they might have released stable particles beyond the Standard Model. We reconsider the possibility that such particles might constitute the main part or a fraction of the dark matter observed today, updating the impact on this scenario from warm dark matter constraints. If sufficiently light, stable particles from primordial black holes evaporation might also provide a significant contribution to dark radiatio…
We consider a cosmological scenario where a relativistic particle and a stable massive particle are simultaneously produced from the decay of a late-decaying particle after Big-Bang Nucleosynthesis but before matter-radiation equality. The relativistic and massive particles behave as dark radiation and warm dark matter, respectively. Due to a common origin, the warmness and abundances are closely related. We refer to the models that lead to such a scenario as Common Origin of Warm and Relativistic Decay Products (COWaRD). We show that COWaRD predicts a correlation between the amount of dark ra…
We investigate possible cosmological effects of interacting scalar radiation and dark matter. After its decoupling, scalar radiation can stream freely as neutrinos or self-interact strongly as perfect fluid, highly depending on the magnitude of its self-couplings. We obtain the general and novel structure for self-scattering rate and compare it with the expansion rate of our Universe. If its trilinear/cubic coupling is non-zero, scalar radiation can be eventually treated as perfect fluid. Possible effects on CMB are also discussed. When this scalar also mediates interaction among dark matter p…
Decaying cold dark matter (CDM) has been considered as a mechanism to tackle the tensions in the Hubble expansion rate and the clustering of matter. However, polarization measurements of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) severely constrain the fraction of dark matter decaying before recombination, and lensing of the CMB anisotropies by large-scale structure set strong constraints on dark matter decaying after recombination. Together, these constraints make an explanation of the Hubble tension in terms of decaying dark matter unlikely. In response to this situation, we investigate whether a…
We consider a simple class of models where dark radiation has self-interactions and therefore does not free stream. Such dark radiation has no anisotropic stress (or viscosity), leaving a distinct signature on the CMB angular power spectrum. Specifically we study a possibility that hidden gauge bosons and/or chiral fermions account for the excess of the effective number of neutrino species. They have gauge interactions and remain light due to the unbroken hidden gauge symmetry, leading to ΔN_{\rm eff} \simeq 0.29 in some case.
The existence of dark radiation that is completely decoupled from the standard model in the early Universe leaves open the possibility of an associated dark radiation isocurvature mode. We show that the presence of dark radiation isocurvature leads to spatial variation in the primordial abundances of helium and deuterium due to spatial variation in $N_{\rm eff}$ during Big Bang nucleosynthesis. We use the result to constrain the existence of such an isocurvature mode on scales down to $\sim 1$ Mpc scales. By measuring the excess variance in the primordial helium to hydrogen and deuterium to hy…
Recent studies of the cosmic microwave background, large scale structure, and big bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) show trends towards extra radiation. Within the framework of supersymmetric hadronic axion models, we explore two high-reheating-temperature scenarios that can explain consistently extra radiation and cold dark matter (CDM), with the latter residing either in gravitinos or in axions. In the gravitino CDM case, axions from decays of thermal saxions provide extra radiation already prior to BBN and decays of axinos with a cosmologically required TeV-scale mass can produce extra entropy. In…
We show that if dark energy evolves in time, its dynamical component could be dominated by a bath of dark radiation. Within current constraints this radiation could have up to $\sim 10^4$ times more energy density than the cosmic microwave background. We demonstrate particular models in which a rolling scalar field generates different forms of dark radiation such as hidden photons, milli-charged particles and even Standard Model neutrinos. We find the leading effect on the late-time cosmological expansion history depends on a single parameter beyond $Λ$CDM, namely the temperature of the dark r…
We study the range of consistency of a model based on a nonlinear scalar field Dirac-Born-Infeld action for the unification of dark matter and dark energy using Gamma-Ray Bursts at high-redshifts. We use the sample of 59 high-redshift GRBs reported by Wei (2010), calibrated at low redshifts with the Union 2 sample of SNe Ia, thus avoiding the circularity problem. In this analysis, we also include the CMB7-year data and the baryonic acoustic peak BAO. Besides, it is calculated the parameter of the equation of state $w$, the deceleration parameter $q_0$ and the redshift of the transition to the …
We propose a novel particle physics model in which vector dark matter (VDM) and dark radiation (DR) originate from the same non-Abelian dark sector. We show an illustrating example where dark $SU(3)$ is spontaneously broken into $SU(2)$ subgroup by the nonzero vacuum expectation value of a complex scalar in fundamental representation of $SU(3)$. The massless gauge bosons associated with the residual unbroken $SU(2)$ constitute DR and help to relieve the tension in Hubble constant measurements between $\textit{Planck}$ and Hubble Space Telescope. In the meantime, massive dark gauge bosons assoc…
We consider General Relativity with matter, radiation and a minimally coupled dark energy defined by an equation of state w. Using dynamical system method, we find the equilibrium points of such a theory assuming an expanding Universe and a positive dark energy density. Two of these points correspond to classical radiation and matter dominated epochs for the Universe. For the other points, dark energy mimics matter, radiation or accelerates Universe expansion. We then look for possible sequences of epochs describing a Universe starting with some radiation dominated epoch(s) (mimicked or not by…
We consider a cosmology in which dark matter and a quintessence scalar field responsible for the acceleration of the Universe are allowed to interact. Allowing for both conformal and disformal couplings, we perform a global analysis of the constraints on our model using Hubble parameter measurements, baryon acoustic oscillation distance measurements, and a Supernovae Type Ia data set. We find that the additional disformal coupling relaxes the conformal coupling constraints. Moreover we show that, at the background level, a disformal interaction within the dark sector is preferred to both $Λ$CD…
The mechanism of the generation of dark matter and dark radiation from the evaporation of primordial black holes is very interesting. We consider the case of Kerr black holes to generalize previous results obtained in the Schwarzschild case. For dark matter, the results do not change dramatically and the bounds on warm dark matter apply similarly: in particular, the Kerr case cannot save the scenario of black hole domination for light dark matter. For dark radiation, the expectations for $ΔN_{eff}$ do not change significantly with respect to the Schwarzschild case, but for an enhancement in th…
We investigate the validity of the generalized second law of thermodynamics, in the cosmological scenario where dark energy interacts with both dark matter and radiation. Calculating separately the entropy variation for each fluid component and for the apparent horizon itself, we show that the generalized second law is always and generally valid, independently of the specific interaction form, of the fluids equation-of-state parameters and of the background geometry.
We present a general approach for modelling the small-scale suppression in the linear matter power spectrum induced by the presence of non-cold dark matter. We show that the new parametrisation accurately describes a large variety of non-thermal scenarios, removing the need to individually test each of them. We discuss the first astrophysical constraints on its free parameters and we outline the next steps for pursuing a full statistical data analysis.

We examine the issue of dark radiation (DR) from string moduli decay into axion-like particles (ALPs). In KKLT-type models of moduli stabilization, the axionlike phases of moduli fields are expected to decouple whilst in LVS-type moduli stabilization some can remain light and may constitute dark radiation. We evaluate modulus decay to Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) particles and dark radiation for more general compactifications. In spite of tightening error bars on ΔN_{eff}, we find only mild constraints on modulus-ALP couplings due to the somewhat suppressed modulus branching fr…
New measurements of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) by the Planck mission have greatly increased our knowledge about the Universe. Dark radiation, a weakly interacting component of radiation, is one of the important ingredients in our cosmological model which is testable by Planck and other observational probes. At the moment the possible existence of dark radiation is an unsolved question. For instance, the discrepancy between the value of the Hubble constant, H_0, inferred from the Planck data and local measurements of H_0 can to some extent be alleviated by enlarging the minimal Lambd…
We investigate a universe filled with interacting dark matter, holographic dark energy, and dark radiation for the spatially flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) spacetime. We use a linear interaction to reconstruct all the component energy densities in terms of the scale factor by directly solving the balance's equations along with the source equation. We apply the $χ^{2}$ method to the observational Hubble data for constraining the cosmic parameters, contrast with the Union 2 sample of supernovae, and analyze the amount of dark energy in the radiation era. It turns out that our model exhibi…
We propose a QCD axion model that avoids the cosmological domain wall problem, introducing a global SU(3)_f family symmetry to which we embed the unwanted PQ discrete symmetry. The spontaneous breaking of SU(3)_f and PQ symmetry predicts eight NG bosons as well as axion, all of which contribute to dark radiation in the Universe. The derivation from the standard model prediction of dark radiation can be observed by future observations of CMB fluctuations. Our model also predicts a sizable exotic kaon decay rate, which is marginally consistent with the present collider data and would be tested b…
Recently it has been suggested that dark radiation in the form of axions produced during the decay of string theory moduli fields could be responsible for the soft x-ray excess in galaxy clusters. These soft X-ray photons come about due to the conversion of these axions into photons in the magnetic fields of the clusters. In this work we calculate the conversion of axionic dark radiation into X-ray photons in the magnetic field of our own Galaxy. We consider Delta N ~ 0.5 worth of dark radiation made up of axions with energy of order 0.1-1 keV. We show that it is possible, if a little optimist…
Reheating in string compactifications is generically driven by the decay of the lightest modulus which produces Standard Model particles, dark matter and light hidden sector degrees of freedom that behave as dark radiation. This common origin allows us to find an interesting correlation between dark matter and dark radiation. By combining present upper bounds on the effective number of neutrino species N_eff with lower bounds on the reheating temperature as a function of the dark matter mass m_DM from Fermi data, we obtain strong constraints on the (N_eff,m_DM)-plane. Most of the allowed regio…
We consider the generic possibility that the Universe's energy budget includes some form of relativistic or semi-relativistic dark radiation (DR) with non-gravitational interactions with Standard Model (SM) particles. Such dark radiation may consist of SM singlets or a non-thermal, energetic component of neutrinos. If such DR is created at a relatively recent epoch, it can carry sufficient energy to leave a detectable imprint in experiments designed to search for very weakly interacting particles: dark matter and underground neutrino experiments. We analyze this possibility in some generality,…
Cosmological analysis based on currently available observations are unable to rule out a sizeable coupling between dark energy and dark matter. However, the signature of the coupling is not easy to grasp, since the coupling is degenerate with other cosmological parameters, such as the dark energy equation of state and the dark matter abundance. We discuss the possible ways to break such degeneracy. Based on the perturbation formalism, we carry out the global fitting by using latest observational data and get a tight constraint on the interaction between dark sectors. We find that the appropria…
Recent pulsar timing data reported by the NANOGrav collaboration may indicate the existence of a stochastic gravitational wave background around $f \sim 10^{-8}$ Hz. We explore a possibility to generate such low-frequency gravitational waves from a dark sector phase transition. Assuming that the dark sector is completely decoupled from the visible sector except via the gravitational interaction, we find that some amount of dark radiation should remain until present. The NANOGrav data implies that the amount of dark radiation is close to the current upper bound, which may help mitigate the so-c…
