A general formalism developed few years ago to model polytropic Newtonian stars with anisotropic pressure is applied to model stars for which, both, radial and tangential pressure satisfy polytropic equations of state. We obtain the corresponding Lane--Emden equation, and integrate it for a wide range of values of the parameters, thereby illustrating the effects of the pressure anisotropy on stellar objects. We calculate Chandrasekhar mass for a white dwarf and compare it with previous results. Finally, prospective applications to some astrophysical scenarios are discussed.
A general formalism recently proposed to study Newtonian polytropes for anisotropic fluids is here extended to the relativistic regime. Thus, it is assumed that a polytropic equation of state is satisfied by, both, the radial and the tangential pressures of the fluid. Doing so the generalized Lane--Emden equations are obtained and solved. Some specific models are obtained, and their physical properties are discussed.
An algorithm presented by K. Lake to obtain all static spherically symmetric perfect fluid solutions was recently extended by L. Herrera to the interesting case of locally anisotropic fluids (principal stresses unequal). In this work we develop an algorithm to construct all static spherically symmetric anisotropic solutions for general relativistic polytropes. Again the formalism requires the knowledge of only one function (instead of two) to generate all possible solutions. To illustrate the method some known cases are recovered.
In this work we study class I interior solutions supported by anisotropic polytropes. The generalized Lane--Emden equation compatible with the embedding condition is obtained and solved for a different set of parameters in both the isothermal and non--isothermal regimes. For completeness, the Tolman mass is computed and analysed to some extend. As a complementary study we consider the impact of the Karmarkar condition on the mass and the Tolman mass functions respectively. Comparison with other results in literature are discussed.
This paper examines the general formalism and applications of isotropic as well as anisotropic polytropic stars in curvature-matter coupled gravity. For this purpose, we consider static spherical and Schwarzschild spacetimes in the interior and exterior regions, respectively. We use two polytropic equations of state to obtain physically viable solutions of the field equations. The hydrostatic equilibrium and Lane-Emden equations are developed for both isotropic as well as anisotropic cases. We study the effects of anisotropic pressure on the stellar structure. Moreover, we graphically inspect …
The equation of state inside very compact objects like neutron stars is still largely unkown. Even though a lot progress has been made in recent years to develop the so-called realistic equations of state, a lot of insight can be gained by using polytropic equations of state to integrate the stellar equations of structure. In this work we provide a brief review of the Newtonian and relativistic equations of structure and present some numerical results, which we believe that can be useful for students starting to work on this field. The internal structure of the Newtonian polytropes is obtained…
In this paper, we study the electromagnetic effects on stability of spherically symmetric anisotropic fluid distribution satisfying two polytropic equations of state and construct the corresponding generalized Tolman Oppenheimer Volkoff equations. We apply perturbations on matter variables via polytropic constant as well as polytropic index and formulate the force distribution function. It is found that the compact object is stable for feasible choice of perturbed polytropic index in the presence of charge.
This paper explored the physical acceptability conditions for anisotropic matter configurations in General Relativity. The study considered a generalized polytropic equation of state $P=κρ^γ+αρ-β$ for a heuristic anisotropy. We integrated the corresponding Lane-Emden equation for several hundred models and found the parameter-space portion ensuring the configurations' acceptability. Polytrope based on the total energy density are more stable than those with baryonic density, and small positive local anisotropies produce acceptable models. We also found that polytropic configurations where tang…
In this work we will analyse the complexity factor, proposed by L. Herrera, for spherically symmetric static matter distributions satisfying a polytropic equation through the gravitational decoupling method. Specifically, we will use the 2-step GD, which is a particular case of the extended geometric deformation (EGD), to obtain analytic polytropic solutions of Einstein's equations. In order to give an example, we construct a model satisfying a polytropic equation of state using Tolman IV as a seed solution.
This paper analyzes the anisotropic stellar evolution governed by a polytropic equation of state in the framework of $f(R,T,Q)$ gravity, where $Q=R_{ab}T^{ab}$. We construct the field equations, hydrostatic equilibrium equation and trace equation to obtain their solutions numerically under the influence of $σR^{2}+γQ$ gravity model, where $σ$ and $γ$ are arbitrary constants. We examine the dependence of various physical characteristics such as radial/tangential pressure, energy density, anisotropic factor, total mass and surface redshift for specific values of the model parameters. The physica…
In this work we propose a novel approach to integrate the Lane-Emden equations for relativistic anisotropic polytropes. We take advantage of the fact that Gravitational Decoupling allows to decrease the number of degrees of freedom once a well known solution of the Einstein field equations is provided as a seed so after demanding the polytropic equation for the radial pressure the system is automatically closed. The approach not only allows to extend both isotropic or anisotropic known solutions but simplifies the computation of the Tolman mass whenever the Minimal Geometric Deformation is con…
We set up in detail the general formalism to model polytropic general relativistic stars with anisotropic pressure. We shall consider two different possible polytropic equations, all of which yield the same Lane-Emden equation in the Newtonian limit. A heuristic model based on an ansatz to obtain anisotropic matter solutions from known solutions for isotropic matter is adopted to illustrate the effects of the pressure anisotropy on the structure of the star. In this context, the Tolman mass, which is a measure of the active gravitational mass, is invoked to explain some features of the models.…
We present a detailed analysis of a general relativistic static spherical symmetric distribution in which both the radial and tangential pressures follow a master polytropic equation of state that generalizes the standard treatment and avoids the appearance of singularities in the system. In particular, we find the corresponding Lane-Emden equation and integrate it for a wide range of values of the parameters involved. We explore the parameter space with the aim to find the set of parameters leading to reasonable physical solutions. Also, we considered the effect of spherically symmetric pertu…
We present the results of numerical time evolutions of the linearised perturbations of rapidly and rigidly rotating Newtonian polytropes while making the Cowling approximation. The evolution code runs stably for hundreds of stellar rotations, allowing us to compare our results with previously published eigenmode calculations, for instance the f-mode calculations of Ipser & Lindblom, and the r-mode calculations of Karino et al. The mode frequencies were found to be in agreement within the expected accuracy. We have also examined the inertial modes recently computed by Lockitch & Friedman, and w…
The \lq\lq effective geometry" formalism is used to study the perturbations of a perfect barotropic Newtonian self-gravitating rotating and compressible fluid coupled with gravitational backreaction. The case of a uniformly rotating polytrope with index $n=1$ is investigated, due to its analytical tractability. Special attention is devoted to the geometrical properties of the underlying background acoustic metric, focusing in particular on null geodesics as well as on the analog light cone structure.
We set up the general formalism to model polytropic Newtonian stars with anisotropic pressure. We obtain the corresponding Lane-Emden equation. A heuristic model based on an ansatz to obtain anisotropic matter solutions from known solutions for isotropic matter is adopted to illustrate the effects of the pressure anisotropy on the structure of the star. In particular, we calculate the Chandrasekhar mass for a white dwarf. It is clearly displayed how the Chandrasekhar mass limit changes depending on the anisotropy. Prospective astrophysical applications of the proposed approach are discussed.
We discuss the effect that small fluctuations of local anisotropy of pressure, and energy density, may have on the occurrence of cracking in spherical compact objects, satisfying a polytropic equation of state. Two different kind of polytropes are considered. For both, it is shown that departures from equilibrium may lead to the appearance of cracking, for a wide range of values of the parameters defining the polytrope. Prospective applications of the obtained results, to some astrophysical scenarios, are pointed out.
In this paper we study the kinetic theory of many-particle astrophysical systems and we present a consistent version of the collisionless Boltzmann equation in the 1PN approximation. We argue that the equation presented by Rezania and Sobouti in A&A 354 1110 (2000) is not the correct expression to describe the evolution of a collisionless self-gravitating gas. One of the reasons that account for the previous statement is that the energy of a free-falling test particle, obeying the 1PN equations of motion for static gravitational fields, is not a static solution of the mentioned equation. The s…
We analyze in detail conformally flat spherically symmetric fluid distributions, satisfying a polytropic equation of state. Among the two possible families of relativistic polytropes, only one contains models which satisfy all the required physical conditions. The ensuing configurations are necessarily anisotropic and show interesting physical properties. Prospective applications of the presented models to the study of super-Chandrasekhar white dwarfs, are discussed.
An iterative method is presented for solving the problem of a uniformly rotating, self-gravitating ring without a central body in Newtonian gravity by expanding about the thin ring limit. Using this method, a simple formula relating mass to the integrated pressure is derived to the leading order for a general equation of state. For polytropes with the index n=1, analytic coefficients of the iterative approach are determined up to the third order. Analogous coefficients are computed numerically for other polytropes. Our solutions are compared with those generated by highly accurate numerical me…
In this paper, we study a family of two-component anisotropic polytropes which model a wide range of spherically symmetric astrophysical systems such as early-type baryonic galaxies. This family is found to contain a large class of models such as the hypervirial family (which satisfy the virial theorem locally), the Plummer and Hernquist models and Navarro-Frenk-White (NFW)-like models. The potential--density pair for these models are derived, as well as their velocity dispersions and anisotropy parameters. The projected quantities are computed and found to reduce to analytical expressions in …
We investigate static spherically symmetric perfect fluid models in Newtonian gravity for barotropic equations of state that are asymptotically polytropic at low and high pressures. This is done by casting the equations into a 3-dimensional regular dynamical system with bounded dependent variables. The low and high central pressure limits correspond to two 2-dimensional boundary subsets, described by homology invariant equations for exact polytropes. Thus the formulation naturally places work about polytropes in a more general context. The introduced framework yields a visual aid for obtaining…
Spherically symmetric relativistic stars with the polytropic equation of state (EoS), which possess the local pressure anisotropy, are considered within the framework of general relativity. The generalized Lane-Emden equations are derived for the arbitrary anisotropy parameter $Δ=p_t-p_r$ ($p_t$ and $p_r$ being the transverse and radial pressure, respectively). They are then applied to some special ansatz for the anisotropy parameter in the form of the differential relation between the anisotropy parameter $Δ$ and the metric function $ν$. The analytical solutions of the obtained equations are …
I use the Newtonian equation of hydrostatic equilibrium for an isotropic fluid sphere to generate exact anisotropic solutions of Einstein's equations. The input function is simply the density. An infinite number of regular solutions are constructed, some of which satisfy all the standard energy conditions. Two classes of these solutions generalize the Newtonian polytropes of index 0 and 1.
Axions and axion-like particles are a leading model for the dark matter in the Universe; therefore, dark matter halos may be boson stars in the process of collapsing. We examine a class of static boson stars with a non-minimal coupling to gravity. We modify the gravitational density of the boson field to be proportional to an arbitrary power of the modulus of the field, introducing a non-standard coupling. We find a class of solutions very similar to Newtonian polytropic stars that we denote "quantum polytropes." These quantum polytropes are supported by a non-local quantum pressure and follow…
In this paper we study anisotropic spherical polytropes within the framework of general relativity. Using the anisotropic Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkov (TOV) equations, we explore the relativistic anisotropic Lane-Emden equations. We find how the anisotropic pressure affects the boundary conditions of these equations. Also we argue that the behaviour of physical quantities near the center of star changes in the presence of anisotropy. For constant density, a class of exact solution is derived with the aid of a new ansatz and its physical properties are discussed.
In this paper we are concerned with the effects of anisotropic pressure on the boundary conditions of anisotropic Lane-Emden equation and homology theorem. Some new exact solutions of this equation are derived. Then some of the theorems governing the Newtonian perfect fluid star are extended taking the anisotropic pressure into account.
In this paper we explore how far the post-Newtonian theory goes in overcoming the difficulties associated with anisotropic homogeneous cosmologies in the Newtonian approximation. It will be shown that, unlike in the Newtonian case, the cosmological equations of the post-Newtonian approximation are much more in the spirit of general relativity with regard to the nine Bianchi types and issues of singularities. The situations of vanishing rotation and vanishing shear are treated separately. The homogeneous Bianchi I model is considered as an example of a rotation-free cosmology with anisotropy. I…
Using our new Post-Newtonian SPH (smoothed particle hydrodynamics) code, we study the final coalescence and merging of neutron star (NS) binaries. We vary the stiffness of the equation of state (EOS) as well as the initial binary mass ratio and stellar spins. Results are compared to those of Newtonian calculations, with and without the inclusion of the gravitational radiation reaction. We find a much steeper decrease in the gravity wave peak strain and luminosity with decreasing mass ratio than would be predicted by simple point-mass formulae. For NS with softer EOS (which we model as simple $…
In this work we evaluate the physical acceptability of relativistic anisotropic spheres modeled by two polytropic equations of state -- with the same newtonian limit -- commonly used to describe compact objects in General Relativity. We integrate numerically the corresponding Lane-Emden equation in order to get density, mass and pressure profiles. An ansatz is used for the anisotropic pressure allowing us to have material configurations slightly deviated from isotropic condition. Numerical models are classified in a parameter space according to the number of physical acceptability conditions t…
We study the dynamical instability of anisotropic collapsing cylinder with the expansion-free condition, which generates vacuum cavity within fluid distribution. The perturbation scheme is applied to distinguish Newtonian, post-Newtonian and post-post Newtonian terms, which are used for constructing dynamical equation at Newtonian and post-Newtonian regimes. We analyze the role of pressure anisotropy and energy density inhomogeneity on the stability of collapsing cylinder. It turns out that stability of the cylinder depends upon these physical properties of the fluid, not on the stiffness of t…
The problem of the dynamical stability of anistropic systems is studied, by proposing a criterion in terms of the adiabatic local index $γ$. The result has general validity and can be applied to several physical situations. Configurations that cannot exist in the isotropic regime can exist in the anisotropic one. Some applications of the criterion are also included.
We investigate properties of r-modes characterized by regular eigenvalue problem in slowly rotating relativistic polytropes. Our numerical results suggest that discrete r-mode solutions for the regular eigenvalue problem exist only for restricted polytropic models. In particular the r-mode associated with l=m=2, which is considered to be the most important for gravitational radiation driven instability, do not have a discrete mode as solutions of the regular eigenvalue problem for polytropes having the polytropic index N > 1.18 even in the post-Newtonian order. Furthermore for a N=1 polytrope,…
Despite the recent excitement over the r-mode instability of rotating stars, these modes are not yet well-understood for stellar models appropriate to neutron stars - perfect fluid models in which both the equilibrium and perturbed configurations obey the same one-parameter equation of state. In spherical stars of this kind, r-modes and g-modes form a degenerate zero-frequency subspace. Rotation splits the degeneracy to zeroth order in the star's angular velocity $Ω$, and the resulting modes are generically hybrids, whose limit as $Ω\to 0$ is a stationary current with axial and polar parts. Li…
The gravitational properties of astrophysical objects depend sensitively on their internal structure. In Newtonian theory, the gravitational potential of a rotating star can be fully described by an infinite number of multipole moments of its mass distribution. Recently, this infinite number of moments for uniformly-rotating stars were shown semi-analytically to be expressible in terms of just the first three: the mass, the spin, and the quadrupole moment of the star. The relations between the various lower multipole moments were additionally shown to depend weakly on the equation of state, wh…
An analytical method is presented for treating the problem of a uniformly rotating, self-gravitating ring without a central body in Newtonian gravity. The method is based on an expansion about the thin ring limit, where the cross-section of the ring tends to a circle. The iterative scheme developed here is applied to homogeneous rings up to the 20th order and to polytropes with the index n=1 up to the third order. For other polytropic indices no analytic solutions are obtainable, but one can apply the method numerically. However, it is possible to derive a simple formula relating mass to the i…
The Einstein-Maxwell equations with anisotropic pressures and electromagnetic field are studied with a polytropic equation of state. New exact solutions to the field equations are generated in terms of elementary functions. Special cases of the uncharged solutions of Feroze and Siddiqui (Gen Relativ Gravit 43: 1025, 2011) and Maharaj and Mafa Takisa (Gen Relativ Gravit 44: 1419, 2012) are recovered. We also obtain exact solutions for a neutral anisotropic gravitating body for a polytrope from our general treatment. Graphical plots indicate that the energy density, tangential pressure and aniso…
We sketch an algorithm to generate exact anisotropic solutions starting from a barotropic EoS and setting an ansatz on the metric functions. To illustrate the method, we use a generalization of the polytropic equation of state consisting of a combination of a polytrope plus a linear term. Based on this generalization, we develop two models which are not deprived of physical meaning as well as fulfilling the stringent criteria of physical acceptability conditions. We also show that some relativistic anisotropic polytropic models may have singular tangential sound velocity for polytropic indexes…
We discuss the dynamical analysis in $f(R,T)$ gravity (where $R$ is Ricci scalar and $T$ is trace of energy momentum tensor) for gravitating sources carrying axial symmetry. The self gravitating system is taken to be anisotropic and line element describes axially symmetric geometry avoiding rotation about symmetry axis and meridional motions (zero vorticity case). The modified field equations for axial symmetry in $f(R,T)$ theory are formulated, together with the dynamical equations. Linearly perturbed dynamical equations lead to the evolution equation carrying adiabatic index $Γ$ that defines…
We study the implications of $R^n$ extension of Starobinsky model on dynamical instability of Vorticity-free axially symmetric gravitating body. The matter distribution is considered to be anisotropic for which modified field equations are formed in context of $f(R)$ gravity. In order to achieve the collapse equation, we make use of the dynamical equations, extracted from linearly perturbed contracted Bianchi identities. The collapse equation carries adiabatic index $Γ$ in terms of usual and dark source components, defining the range of stability/insatbility in Newtonian (N) and post-Newtonian…
This paper is devoted to investigate the cylindrical collapse of an anisotropic fluid in $f(R)$ gravity. For this purpose, the viscous charged anisotropic fluid dissipating energy with heat flow and shear is assumed. We use the perturbation scheme to develop the dynamical equations for the variables that ultimately lead to the disturbance of the physical variables and the Starobinksy like $f(R)$ model chosen. The evolution of the matter variables is discussed with the help of these equations. It can be concluded that the range of dynamic instabilities depends on the field strength, density dis…
In this paper, we have introduced new viable solutions of Einstein-Maxwell field equations by incorporating the features of anisotropic matter distribution in the realm of General theory of Relativity ($GR$). For this procurement, we have employed a Finch-Skea spacetime along with a generalized polytropic equation of state ($EoS$). We have constructed various models of generalized polytropes by assuming the different choices of the polytropic index i.e.,$η=\frac{1}{2}, \frac{2}{3}, 1$ and $2$. The numerous physical characteristics of these considered models have been studied via graphical anal…
We investigate the integrability conditions of a class of shear-free perfect-fluid cosmological models within the framework of anisotropic fluid sources, applying our results to f(R) dark energy models. Generalising earlier general relativistic results for time-like geodesics, we extend the potential and acceleration terms of the quasi-Newtonian formulation of integrable dust cosmological models about a linearized Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker background and derive the equations that describe their dynamical evolutions. We show that in general, models with an anisotropic fluid source are…
We present the first results from our Post-Newtonian (PN) Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) code, which has been used to study the coalescence of binary neutron star (NS) systems. The Lagrangian particle-based code incorporates consistently all lowest-order (1PN) relativistic effects, as well as gravitational radiation reaction, the lowest-order dissipative term in general relativity. We test our code on sequences of single NS models of varying compactness, and we discuss ways to make PN simulations more relevant to realistic NS models. We also present a PN SPH relaxation procedure for con…
Using our new post-Newtonian (PN) smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) code, we have studied numerically the mergers of neutron star binaries with irrotational initial configurations. Here we describe a new method for constructing numerically accurate initial conditions for irrotational binary systems with circular orbits in PN gravity. We then compute the 3D hydrodynamic evolution of these systems until the two stars have completely merged, and we determine the corresponding GW signals. We present results for systems with different binary mass ratios, and for neutron stars represented by pol…
We consider both mode calculations and time evolutions of axial r-modes for relativistic uniformly rotating non-barotropic neutron stars, using the slow-rotation formalism, in which rotational corrections are considered up to linear order in the angular velocity Ω. We study various stellar models, such as uniform density models, polytropic models with different polytropic indices n, and some models based on realistic equations of state. For weakly relativistic uniform density models, and polytropes with small values of n, we can recover the growth times predicted from Newtonian theory when sta…
We present a test of the local Lorentz invariance of post-Newtonian gravity by monitoring Earth's gravity with a Mach-Zehnder atom interferometer that features a resolution of about 8*10^(-9)g/Hz^(1/2), the highest reported thus far. Expressed within the standard model extension (SME) or Nordtvedt's anisotropic universe model, the analysis limits four coefficients describing anisotropic gravity at the ppb level and three others, for the first time, at the 10ppm level. Using the SME we explicitly demonstrate how the experiment actually compares the isotropy of gravity and electromagnetism.
We calculate the gravitational radiation produced by the coalescence of inspiraling binary neutron stars in the Newtonian regime using 3-dimensional numerical simulations. The stars are modeled as polytropes and start out in the point-mass regime at wide separation. The hydrodynamic integration is performed using smooth particle hydrodynamics (SPH) with Newtonian gravity, and the gravitational radiation is calculated using the quadrupole approximation. We have run a number of simulations varying the neutron star radii, equations of state, spins, and mass ratio. The resulting gravitational wave…
We construct conformastat spherically symmetric spacetimes representing anisotropic fluid matter distributions from given solutions of the Poisson's equation of Newtonian gravity and its corresponding circular speed profile. As simple examples, we present three families of spherically symmetric spacetimes which we apply in constructing new models of relativistic anisotropic thick spherical shells, and of relativistic galaxy models composite by a central spherical bulge, the thick disk and the dark matter halo, writing in this case the metric in cylindrical coordinates. Moreover, the geodesic m…
For a variety of fully relativistic polytropic neutron star models we calculate the star's tidal Love number k2. Most realistic equations of state for neutron stars can be approximated as a polytrope with an effective index n~0.5-1.0. The equilibrium stellar model is obtained by numerical integration of the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkhov equations. We calculate the linear l=2 static perturbations to the Schwarzschild spacetime following the method of Thorne and Campolattaro. Combining the perturbed Einstein equations into a single second order differential equation for the perturbation to the metr…
In this paper, we have continued the work of Herrera \emph{et al.} \cite{herrera2012dynamical} in $f(G)$ gravitational theory. For this purpose, a spherically symmetric fluid exhibiting locally anisotropic pressure along with the energy density, is taken under consideration. The perturbation scheme is imposed on modified field equations and the dynamical equations. The collapse equation is devised from these perturbed equations which stimulates to disclose the instability zone under both Newtonian and post-Newtonian constraints. It is wrapped up by concluding that dynamical instability is inte…
In this work we have discussed the implications of shear-free condition on axially symmetric anisotropic gravitating objects in $f(R,T)$ theory. Restricted axial symmetry ignoring rotation and reflection enteries is taken into account for establishment of instability range. Implementation of linear perturbation on constitutive modified dynamical equations yield evolution equation. This equation associates adiabatic index $Γ$ with material and dark source components defining stable and unstable regions in Newtonian (N) and post-Newtonian (pN) approximations.
