I use the Newtonian equation of hydrostatic equilibrium for an isotropic fluid sphere to generate exact anisotropic solutions of Einstein's equations. The input function is simply the density. An infinite number of regular solutions are constructed, some of which satisfy all the standard energy conditions. Two classes of these solutions generalize the Newtonian polytropes of index 0 and 1.
We present a generalized Newtonian description of particle dynamics valid for any spherically symmetric, static black hole spacetime. This approach is derived from the geodesic motion of test particles in the low-energy limit. It reproduces exactly the location of the marginally stable, marginally bound, and photon circular orbits; the radial dependence of the energy and angular momentum of circular orbits; parabolic motion; pericentre shift; and the spatial projection of general trajectories. As explicit examples of the new prescription, we apply it to the Schwarzschild, Schwarzschild-de Sitt…
We discuss stability of spherically symmetric static solutions in Newtonian limit of Jordan, Brans-Dicke field equations. The behavior of the stable equilibrium solutions for the spherically symmetric configurations considered here, it emerges that the more compact a model is, the more stable it is. Moreover, linear stability analysis shows the existence of stable configurations for any polytropic index.
The post-Newtonian Jeans equation for stationary self-gravitating systems is derived from the post-Newtonian Boltzmann equation in spherical coordinates. The Jeans equation is coupled with the three Poisson equations from the post-Newtonian theory. The Poisson equations are functions of the energy-momentum tensor components which are determined from the post-Newtonian Maxwell--Jüttner distribution function. As an application, the effect of a central massive black hole on the velocity dispersion profile of the host galaxy is investigated and the influence of the post-Newtonian corrections are d…
Black hole p-brane solutions for a wide class of intersection rules are considered. The solutions are defined on a manifold which contains a product of n-1 Ricci-flat "internal'' spaces. The post-Newtonian parameters "beta" and "gamma" corresponding to a 4-dimensional section of the metric for general intersection rules are studied. It is shown that "beta" does not depend but "gamma" depends on brane intersections. For "block-orthogonal" intersection rules spherically symmetric solutions are considered, and explicit relations for post-Newtonian parameters are obtained. The bounds on parameters…
The present paper has the purpose to illustrate the importance of the ideas and constructions of the Non-Euclidean (Lobachevsky) Geometry, which can be applied even today for solving some conceptually important problems. We study the static and spherically symmetric solutions to the Einstein field equations under the assumption that the space-time may possess an arbitrary number of spatial dimensions. A new exact solution of a perfect fluid sphere of constant (homogeneous) energy-density which agrees with interior Lobachevsky geometry for 3D and 4D spaces are found. We discuss the property of …
Nonlocal terms in the Einstein Hilbert(EH) action appears as IR corrections in effective theory of quantum gravity. Here we have considered such an action keeping the terms which are quadratic in Ricci Scalar. We obtain the solution for a spherical symmetric. We conduct an analysis for linearised gravity action and find the Newtonian potentials of linearized gravity action and count the degrees of freedom. Finally we reproduce the results for few known examples found in literature.
We investigate spherically symmetric equilibrium states of the Vlasov-Poisson system, relevant in galactic dynamics. We recast the equations into a regular three-dimensional system of autonomous first order ordinary differential equations on a region with compact closure.Based on a dynamical systems analysis we derive theorems that guarantee that the steady state solutions have finite mass and compact support.
This work is concerned with the finiteness problem for static, spherically symmetric perfect fluids in both Newtonian Gravity and General Relativity. We derive criteria on the barotropic equation of state guaranteeing that the corresponding perfect fluid solutions possess finite/infinite extent. In the Newtonian case, for the large class of monotonic equations of state, and in General Relativity we improve earlier results.
We study the problem of static, spherically symmetric, self-gravitating elastic matter distributions in Newtonian gravity. To this purpose we first introduce a new definition of homogeneous, spherically symmetric (hyper)elastic body in Euler coordinates, i.e., in terms of matter fields defined on the current physical state of the body. We show that our definition is equivalent to the classical one existing in the literature and which is given in Lagrangian coordinates, i.e., in terms of the deformation of the body from a given reference state. After a number of well-known examples of constitut…
A solution of the linearized Einstein's equations for a spherically symmetric perturbation of the ultrarelativistic fluid in the homogeneous and isotropic universe is obtained. Conditions on the boundary of the perturbation are discussed. The examples of particle-like and wave-like solutions are given.
In this paper we study static spherically symmetric wormhole solutions sustained by matter sources with isotropic pressure. We show that such spherical wormholes do not exist in the framework of zero-tidal-force wormholes. On the other hand, it is shown that for the often used power-law shape function there is no spherically symmetric traversable wormholes sustained by sources with a linear equation of state $p=ωρ$ for the isotropic pressure, independently of the form of the redshift function $ϕ(r)$. We consider a solution obtained by Tolman at 1939 for describing static spheres of isotropic f…
According to Birkhoff's theorem the only spherically symmetric solution of the vacuum Einstein field equations is the Schwarzschild solution. Inspite of imposing asymptotically flatness and staticness as initial conditions we obtain that these equations have general solutions with the Schwarzschild metric as merely a special and simplest form of them. It is possible to have perfect and smooth metrics with the same Newtonian and post-Newtonian limits of Schwarzschild by a convenient and correct selection.
The objetive of this work is to investigate the influence of the corrections to the spherical symmetrical accretion of an infinity gas cloud characterized by a polytropic equation into a massive object due to the post-Newtonian approximation. The post-Newtonian corrections to the critical values of the flow velocity, sound velocity and radial distance are obtained from the system of hydrodynamics equations in spherical coordinates. The critical point in the post-Newtonian approximation accretion does not correspond to the transonic point like in Newtonian theory. An equation for the Mach number…
We present an elementary derivation of the planetary advance of the perihelion for a general spherically symmetric line element in the post- newtonian approximation.
The relation between angular diameter distance and redshift in a spherically symmetric dust-shell universe is studied. This model has large inhomogeneities of matter distribution on small scales. We have discovered that the relation agrees with that of an appropriate Friedmann-Lemaitre(FL) model if we set a ``homogeneous'' expansion law and a ``homogeneous'' averaged density field. This will support the averaging hypothesis that a universe looks like a FL model in spite of small-scale fluctuations of density field, if its averaged density field is homogeneous on large scales.
A spherically symmetric wormhole in Newtonian gravitation in curved space, enhanced with a connection between the mass density and the Ricci scalar, is presented. The wormhole, consisting of two connected asymptotically flat regions, inhabits a spherically symmetric curved space. The gravitational potential, gravitational field and the pressure that supports the fluid that permeates the Newtonian wormhole are computed. Particle dynamics and tidal effects in this geometry are studied. The possibility of having Newtonian black holes in this theory is sketched.

We consider time dependent problem in perturbative approach for a nonrelativistic inviscid spherically symmetric accretion model where the effect of the gravity of the medium is considered in Newtonian gravity framework. We consider spherically symmetric nonrelativistic accretion, i.e. Bondi accretion with self-gravity. Our approach is perturbative in the linear order of perturbation regime. We introduce linear perturbation over the existing steady state solution of the system. The analysis has two features, one is that the linear perturbation in mass accretion rate in such irrotational invisc…
A phase space is built that allows to study, classify and compare easily large classes of static spherically symmetric wormholes solutions, sustained by an isotropic perfect fluid in General Relativity. We determine the possible locations of equilibrium points, throats and curvature singularities in this phase space. Throats locations show that the spatial variation of the gravitational redshift at the throat of a static spherically symmetric wormhole sustained by an isotropic perfect fluid is always diverging, generalising the result that there is no such wormhole with zero-tidal force. Sever…
Modified Newtonian potentials have been proposed for the description of relativistic effects acting on particles and fluids in permanent orbital motion around black holes. Here we further discuss spherically symmetric potentials like the one proposed by Artemova, Bjornson & Novikov (1996, Astrophysical Journal, 461, 565), and we illustrate their virtues by studying the acceleration along circular trajectories. We compare the results with exact expressions in the spacetime of a rotating (Kerr) black hole.
Trajectory of a test particle or a photon around a general spherical black hole is studied and bending of light trajectory is investigated. Pseudo-Newtonian gravitational potential describing the gravitational field of the black hole is determined and is compared with the related effective potential for test particle motion. As an example, results are presented for Reissner-Nordström black hole.
In this paper we show that problem of proving the existence of a countable number of solutions to the static spherically symmetric SU(2) Einstein-Yang-Mills-dilaton (EYMd) equations can be reduced to proving the non-existence of solutions to the linearized Yang-Mills-dilaton equations (lYMd) satisfying certain asymptotic conditions. The reduction from a non-linear to a linear problem is achieved using a Newtonian perturbation type argument.
We study the post-Newtonian dynamics of black hole binaries in Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet gravity theories. To this aim we build static, spherically symmetric black hole solutions at fourth order in the Gauss-Bonnet coupling $α$. We then "skeletonize" these solutions by reducing them to point particles with scalar field-dependent masses, showing that this procedure amounts to fixing the Wald entropy of the black holes during their slow inspiral. The cosmological value of the scalar field plays a crucial role in the dynamics of the binary. We compute the two-body Lagrangian at first post-Newt…
Using the 3+1 formalism of general relativity we obtain the equations governing the dynamics of spherically symmetric spacetimes with arbitrary sources. We then specialize for the case of perfect fluids accompanied by a flow of interacting massless or massive particles (e.g. neutrinos) which are described in terms of relativistic transport theory. We focus in three types of coordinates: 1) isotropic gauge and maximal slicing, 2) radial gauge and polar slicing, and 3) isotropic gauge and polar slicing.
The crucial role played by pressure in general relativity is explored in the mathematically simple context of a static spherically symmetric geometry. By keeping all pressure terms, the standard formalisms of rotation curve and gravitational lensing observations are extended to a first post-Newtonian order. It turns out that both post-Newtonian formalisms encode the gravitational field differently. Therefore, combined observations of rotation curves and gravitational lensing of the same galaxy can in principle be used to infer both the density and pressure profile of the galactic fluid. The ne…
The Johannsen-Psaltis spacetime describes a rotating black hole with parametric deviations from the Kerr metric. By construction this spacetime explicitly violates the no-hair theorems. Rotating black hole solutions in any modified theory of gravity could be written in terms of the Johannsen-Psaltis metric. We examined the accretion of gas onto a black hole described by the static limit of this spacetime. We employed a potential that generalises the Paczynski-Wiita potential to the static Johannsen-Psaltis metric. Our analysis utilised a recent pseudo-Newtonian formulation of the dynamics arou…
We study the Einstein equations of the static spherically symmetric anisotropic fluid system in curvature coordinates to find algorithms that generate all solutions and all solutions that are regular at the center. All possible combinations of input functions from the set of four functions that characterize the anisotropic system are considered and all equivalent conditions for central regularity are determined (for both isotropic and anisotropic systems). We provide the first regularity analysis of the known algorithm that uses the potential function and anisotropy as inputs. For three other …
In this paper, we examine static spherically symmetric wormhole solutions in generalized $f(R,ϕ)$ gravity. To do this, we consider three different kinds of fluids: anisotropic, barotropic and isotropic. We explore different $f(R,ϕ)$ models and inspect the energy conditions for all of those three fluids. It is found that under some models in this theory, it is possible to obtain wormhole solutions without requiring exotic matter. The discussion about the conditions where the standard energy conditions (WEC and NEC) are valid for the fluids is discussed in details. From our results and for our c…
Using both numerical and analytical tools we study various features of static, spherically symmetric solutions of the Einstein-Vlasov system. In particular, we investigate the possible shapes of their mass-energy density and find that they can be multi-peaked, we give numerical evidence and a partial proof for the conjecture that the Buchdahl inequality $\sup_{r > 0} 2 m(r)/r < 8/9$, $m(r)$ the quasi-local mass, holds for all such steady states--both isotropic {\em and} anisotropic--, and we give numerical evidence and a partial proof for the conjecture that for any given microscopic equation …
We study the behaviour of a specific system of relativistic elasticity in its own gravitational field: a static, spherically symmetric shell whose wall is of arbitrary thickness consisting of hyperelastic material. We give the system of field equations and boundary conditions within the framework of the Einsteinian theory of gravity. Furthermore, we analize the situation in the Newtonian theory of gravity and obtain an existence result valid for small gravitational constants and pointwise stability by using the implicit function theorem. If one replaces the elastic material with a fluid, one f…
We discuss spherically symmetric solutions for point-like sources in Lorentz-breaking massive gravity theories. This analysis is valid for Stückelberg's effective field theory formulation, for Lorentz Breaking Massive Bigravity and general extensions of gravity leading to an extra term $-Sr^γ$ added to the Newtonian potential. The approach consists in analyzing the stability of the geodesic equations, at the first order (deviation equation). The main result is a strong constrain in the space of parameters of the theories. This motivates higher order analysis of geodesic perturbations in order …
In this paper, we discuss the effects of electromagnetic field on the dynamical instability of a spherically symmetric expansionfree gravitational collapse. Darmois junction conditions are formulated by matching interior spherically symmetric spacetime to exterior Reissner-Nordstr$\ddot{o}$m spacetime. We investigate the role of different terms in the dynamical equation at Newtonian and post Newtonian regimes by using perturbation scheme. It is concluded that instability range depends upon pressure anisotropy, radial profile of energy density and electromagnetic field, but not on the adiabatic…
With Einstein's inertial motion (free-falling and non-rotating relative to gyroscopes), geodesics for non-relativistic particles can intersect repeatedly, allowing one to compute the space-time curvature $R^{\hat{0} \hat{0}}$ exactly. Einstein's $R^{\hat{0} \hat{0}}$ for strong gravitational fields and for relativistic source-matter is identical with the Newtonian expression for the relative radial acceleration of neighboring free-falling test-particles, spherically averaged.--- Einstein's field equations follow from Newtonian experiments, local Lorentz-covariance, and energy-momentum conserva…
This paper focuses on the analysis of the gravitational instability in presence of bulk viscosity both in Newtonian regime and in the fully-relativistic approach. The standard Jeans Mechanism and the Quasi-Isotropic Solution are treated expressing the bulk-viscosity coefficient $ζ$ as a power-law of the fluid energy density $ρ$, i.e., $ζ=\zoρ^{s}$. In the Newtonian regime, the perturbation evolution is founded to be damped by viscosity and the top-down mechanism of structure fragmentation is suppressed. The value of the Jeans Mass remains unchanged also in presence of viscosity. In the relativ…
Within a cosmological context, we study the behaviour of collisionless particles in the weak field approximation to General Relativity, allowing for large gradients of the fields and relativistic velocities for the particles. We consider a spherically symmetric setup such that high resolution simulations are possible with minimal computational resources. We test our formalism by comparing it to two exact solutions: the Schwarzschild solution and the Lemaître-Tolman-Bondi model. In order to make the comparison we consider redshifts and lensing angles of photons passing through the simulation. T…
We construct conformastat spherically symmetric spacetimes representing anisotropic fluid matter distributions from given solutions of the Poisson's equation of Newtonian gravity and its corresponding circular speed profile. As simple examples, we present three families of spherically symmetric spacetimes which we apply in constructing new models of relativistic anisotropic thick spherical shells, and of relativistic galaxy models composite by a central spherical bulge, the thick disk and the dark matter halo, writing in this case the metric in cylindrical coordinates. Moreover, the geodesic m…
We study a static spherically symmetric problem with a black hole and radially directed geodesic flows of dark matter. The obtained solutions have the following properties. At large distances, the gravitational field produces constant velocities of circular motion, i.e., flat rotation curves. At smaller distances, the field switches to Newtonian regime, then to Schwarzschild regime. Deviations from Schwarzschild regime start below the gravitational radius. The dark matter prevents the creation of event horizon, instead, a spherical region possessing extremely large redshift is created. The str…
Multidimensional model describing the "cosmological" and/or spherically symmetric configuration with n+1 Einstein spaces in the theory with several scalar fields and forms is considered. When electro-magnetic composite p-brane ansatz is adopted, n "internal" spaces are Ricci-flat, one space M_0 has a non-zero curvature, and all p-branes do not "live" in M_0, a class of exact solutions is obtained if certain block-orthogonality relations on p-brane vectors are imposed. A subclass of spherically-symmetric solutions containing non-extremal p-brane black holes is considered. Post-Newtonian paramet…
We formulate a generic Newtonian like analogous potential for static spherically symmetric general relativistic (GR) spacetime, and subsequently derived proper Newtonian like analogous potential corresponding to Janis-Newman-Winicour (JNW) and Reissner-Nordström (RN) spacetimes, both exhibiting naked singularities. The derived potentials found to reproduce the entire GR features including the orbital dynamics of the test particle motion and the orbital trajectories, with precise accuracy. The nature of the particle orbital dynamics including their trajectory profiles in JNW and RN geometries s…
A new derivation of the propagation direction of light is given for a 3-parameter family of static, spherically symmetric space-times within the post-post-Newtonian framework. The emitter and the observer are both located at a finite distance. The case of a ray emitted at infinity is also treated.
We show that the bootstrapped Newtonian potential generated by a uniform and isotropic source does not depend on the one-loop correction for the matter coupling to gravity. The latter however affects the relation between the proper mass and the ADM mass and, consequently, the pressure needed to keep the configuration stable.
An exact solution of Einstein's field equations for a static spherically symmetric medium with a radially boost invariant energy-momentum tensor is presented. In the limit of an equation of state corresponding to a distribution of radially directed strings there is a $1/r$ correction to Newton's force law. At large distances and small accelerations this law coincides with the phenomenological force law invented by Milgrom in order to explain the flat rotation curves of galaxies without introducing dark matter. The present model explaines why the critical acceleration of Milgrom is of the same …
The Vlasov-Einstein system describes the evolution of an ensemble of particles (such as stars in a galaxy, galaxies in a galaxy cluster etc.) interacting only by the gravitational field which they create collectively and which obeys Einstein's field equations. The matter distribution is described by the Vlasov or Liouville equation for a collisionless gas. Recent investigations seem to indicate that such a matter model is particularly suited in a general relativistic setting and may avoid the formation of naked singularities, as opposed to other matter models. In the present note we consider t…
We show that the general relativistic theory of the dynamics of isotropic stellar clusters can be developed essentially along the same lines as the Newtonian theory. We prove that the distribution function can be derived from any isotropic momentum moment and that every higher-order moment of the distribution can be written as an integral over a zeroth-order moment. We propose a mathematically simple expression for the distribution function of a family of isotropic general relativistic cluster models and investigate their dynamical properties. In the Newtonian limit, these models obtain a dist…
We derive the `exact' Newtonian limit of general relativity with a positive cosmological constant $Λ$. We point out that in contrast to the case with $Λ= 0 $, the presence of a positive $Λ$ in Einsteins's equations enforces, via the condition $| Φ| \ll 1$, on the potential $Φ$, a range ${\cal R}_{max}(Λ) \gg r \gg {\cal R}_{min} (Λ)$, within which the Newtonian limit is valid. It also leads to the existence of a maximum mass, ${\cal M}_{max}(Λ)$. As a consequence we cannot put the boundary condition for the solution of the Poisson equation at infinity. A boundary condition suitably chosen now …
In this paper we show that any static and spherically symmetric anisotropic solution of the Einstein field equations can be thought as a system sourced by certain deformed isotropic system in the context of Minimal Geometric Deformation-decoupling approach. To be more precise, we developed a mechanism to obtain an isotropic solution from any anisotropic solution of the Einstein field equations. As an example, we implement the method to obtain the sources of a simple static anisotropic and spherically symmetric traversable wormhole.
We describe a method to analyze causal geodesics in static and spherically symmetric spacetimes of Kerr-Schild form which, in particular, allows for a detailed study of the geodesics in the vicinity of the central singularity by means of a regularization procedure based on a generalization of the McGehee regularization for the motion of Newtonian point particles moving in a power-law potential. The McGehee regularization was used by Belbruno and Pretorius to perform a dynamical system regularization of the central singularity of the motion of massless test particles in the Schwarzschild spacet…
A wormhole solution in Newtonian gravitation, enhanced through an equation relating the Ricci scalar to the mass density, is presented. The wormhole inhabits a spherically symmetric curved space, with one throat and two asymptotically flat regions. Particle dynamics in this geometry is studied, and the three distinct dynamical radii, namely, the geodesic, circumferential, and curvature radii, appear naturally in the study of circular motion. Generic motion is also analysed. A limiting case, although inconclusive, suggests the possibility of having a Newtonian black hole in a region of finite (…
A generally covariant extension of general relativity (GR) in which a dynamical unit timelike vector field is coupled to the metric is studied in the asymptotic weak field limit of spherically symmetric static solutions. The two post-Newtonian parameters known as the Eddington-Robertson-Schiff parameters are found to be identical to those in the case of pure GR, except for some non-generic values of the coefficients in the Lagrangian.
The objective of this paper is to discuss the dynamical instability in the context of Newtonian and post Newtonian regimes. For this purpose, we consider non-viscous heat conducting charged isotropic fluid as a collapsing matter with cylindrical symmetry. Darmois junction conditions are formulated. The perturbation scheme is applied to investigate the influence of dissipation and electromagnetic field on the dynamical instability. We conclude that the adiabatic index $Γ$ has smaller value for such a fluid in cylindrically symmetric than isotropic sphere.
We investigate the dynamical nature of the collapse process of a spherically symmetric star in quasi-static hydrodynamical equilibrium. The star collapses from an initial static configuration by dissipating energy in the form of a radial heat flux. The dissipation ensures that the singularity is never formed and the stellar mass completely evaporates over a finite time.
We investigate the conditions for the (in)stability of the isotropic pressure condition in collapsing spherically symmetric, dissipative fluid distributions. It is found that dissipative fluxes, and/or energy density inhomogeneities and/or the appearance of shear in the fluid flow, force any initially isotropic configuration to abandon such a condition, generating anisotropy in the pressure. To reinforce this conclusion we also present some arguments concerning the axially symmetric case. The consequences ensuing our results are analyzed.
We survey many of the important properties of spherically symmetric spacetimes as follows. We present several different ways of describing a spherically symmetric spacetime and the resulting metrics. We then focus our discussion on an especially useful form of the metric of a spherically symmetric spacetime in polar-areal coordinates and its properties. In particular, we show how the metric component functions chosen are extremely compatible with notions in Newtonian mechanics. We also show the monotonicity of the Hawking mass in these coordinates. As an example, we discuss how these coordinat…
We report our rederivation of the equations of motion for relativistic compact binaries through the third-and-a-half post-Newtonian (3.5 PN) order approximation to general relativity using the strong field point particle limit to describe self-gravitating stars instead of the Dirac delta functional. The computation is done in harmonic coordinates. Our equations of motion describe the orbital motion of the binary consisting of spherically symmetric non-rotating stars. The resulting equations of motion fully agree with the 3.5 PN equations of motion derived in the previous works. We also show th…
We prove that all spherically symmetric static spacetimes which are both regular at r=0 and satisfying the single energy condition rho + p_r + p_t >= 0 cannot contain any black hole region (equivalently, they must satisfy 2m/r <= 1 everywhere). This result holds even when the spacetime is allowed to contain a finite number of matching hypersurfaces. This theorem generalizes a result by Baumgarte and Rendall when the matter contents of the space-time is a perfect fluid and also complements their results in the general non-isotropic case.
We study an effective quantum description of the static gravitational potential for spherically symmetric systems up to the first post-Newtonian order. We start by obtaining a Lagrangian for the gravitational potential coupled to a static matter source from the weak field expansion of the Einstein-Hilbert action. By analysing a few classical solutions of the resulting field equation, we show that our construction leads to the expected post-Newtonian expressions. Next, we show that one can reproduce the classical Newtonian results very accurately by employing a coherent quantum state and modifi…
