The equation of state inside very compact objects like neutron stars is still largely unkown. Even though a lot progress has been made in recent years to develop the so-called realistic equations of state, a lot of insight can be gained by using polytropic equations of state to integrate the stellar equations of structure. In this work we provide a brief review of the Newtonian and relativistic equations of structure and present some numerical results, which we believe that can be useful for students starting to work on this field. The internal structure of the Newtonian polytropes is obtained by the numerical integration of the Lane-Emden equation, and we used our results which can also be used to study the Chandrasekhar limit for white dwarfs. However, Newtonian physics cannot correctly describe very compact and massive objects. There is an upper mass limit for neutron stars, supported by observations, which is not predicted by the Newtonian equations. Neutron stars are best described under the framework of General Relativity. The introduction of the TOV equations (as well as the relativistic Lane-Emden equations) is, therefore, necessary to correctly identify stable and non-stable models via the mass-radius relation. The analysis of the EoS also becomes relevant to discard models that allow a possible violation of causality (sound speed larger than c).
A general formalism developed few years ago to model polytropic Newtonian stars with anisotropic pressure is applied to model stars for which, both, radial and tangential pressure satisfy polytropic equations of state. We obtain the corresponding Lane--Emden equation, and integrate it for a wide range of values of the parameters, thereby illustrating the effects of the pressure anisotropy on stellar objects. We calculate Chandrasekhar mass for a white dwarf and compare it with previous results. Finally, prospective applications to some astrophysical scenarios are discussed.
A general formalism recently proposed to study Newtonian polytropes for anisotropic fluids is here extended to the relativistic regime. Thus, it is assumed that a polytropic equation of state is satisfied by, both, the radial and the tangential pressures of the fluid. Doing so the generalized Lane--Emden equations are obtained and solved. Some specific models are obtained, and their physical properties are discussed.
An algorithm presented by K. Lake to obtain all static spherically symmetric perfect fluid solutions was recently extended by L. Herrera to the interesting case of locally anisotropic fluids (principal stresses unequal). In this work we develop an algorithm to construct all static spherically symmetric anisotropic solutions for general relativistic polytropes. Again the formalism requires the knowledge of only one function (instead of two) to generate all possible solutions. To illustrate the method some known cases are recovered.
We discuss the effect that small fluctuations of both local anisotropy and energy density, may have on the occurrence of cracking in spherical compact objects satisfying a polytropic equation of state. A systematic scheme to bring the fluid configurations out of hydrostatic equilibrium is revisited. Various models of polytropes are considered and it is shown that departures from equilibrium may lead to the appearance of cracking for a wide range of values of the parameters involved. Prospective applications of the obtained results to some astrophysical scenarios are pointed out.
This paper explored the physical acceptability conditions for anisotropic matter configurations in General Relativity. The study considered a generalized polytropic equation of state $P=κρ^γ+αρ-β$ for a heuristic anisotropy. We integrated the corresponding Lane-Emden equation for several hundred models and found the parameter-space portion ensuring the configurations' acceptability. Polytrope based on the total energy density are more stable than those with baryonic density, and small positive local anisotropies produce acceptable models. We also found that polytropic configurations where tang…
We present a detailed analysis of a general relativistic static spherical symmetric distribution in which both the radial and tangential pressures follow a master polytropic equation of state that generalizes the standard treatment and avoids the appearance of singularities in the system. In particular, we find the corresponding Lane-Emden equation and integrate it for a wide range of values of the parameters involved. We explore the parameter space with the aim to find the set of parameters leading to reasonable physical solutions. Also, we considered the effect of spherically symmetric pertu…
In this work we propose a novel approach to integrate the Lane-Emden equations for relativistic anisotropic polytropes. We take advantage of the fact that Gravitational Decoupling allows to decrease the number of degrees of freedom once a well known solution of the Einstein field equations is provided as a seed so after demanding the polytropic equation for the radial pressure the system is automatically closed. The approach not only allows to extend both isotropic or anisotropic known solutions but simplifies the computation of the Tolman mass whenever the Minimal Geometric Deformation is con…
A main question in astrophysics and cosmology has been the severe stability of the astrophysical objects, whether a particular equilibrium configuration is stable. In this article, we study the relativistic self-gravitating, hydrostatic spheres with a polytropic equation of state , considering structures with the polytropic indices and illustrates the results for the relativistic parameters . We determined the critical relativistic parameter at which the mass of the polytrope has a maximum value and represents the first mode of radial instability. For n=1 (0.5)-2.5, stable relativistic polytro…
We discuss the effect that small fluctuations of local anisotropy of pressure, and energy density, may have on the occurrence of cracking in spherical compact objects, satisfying a polytropic equation of state. Two different kind of polytropes are considered. For both, it is shown that departures from equilibrium may lead to the appearance of cracking, for a wide range of values of the parameters defining the polytrope. Prospective applications of the obtained results, to some astrophysical scenarios, are pointed out.
Neutral Points of Oscillation Modes along Equilibrium Sequences of Rapidly Rotating Polytropes in General Relativity --- Application of The Cowling Approximation ---
Spherically symmetric equilibrium configurations of perfect fluid obeying a polytropic equation of state are studied in spacetimes with a repulsive cosmological constant. The configurations are specified in terms of three parameters---the polytropic index $n$, the ratio of central pressure and central energy density of matter $σ$, and the ratio of energy density of vacuum and central density of matter $λ$. The static equilibrium configurations are determined by two coupled first-order nonlinear differential equations that are solved by numerical methods with the exception of polytropes with $n…
Dark matter halos modeled by polytropic spheres influenced by the relict cosmological constant and trapping polytropes forming supermassive black holes
Axions and axion-like particles are a leading model for the dark matter in the Universe; therefore, dark matter halos may be boson stars in the process of collapsing. We examine a class of static boson stars with a non-minimal coupling to gravity. We modify the gravitational density of the boson field to be proportional to an arbitrary power of the modulus of the field, introducing a non-standard coupling. We find a class of solutions very similar to Newtonian polytropic stars that we denote "quantum polytropes." These quantum polytropes are supported by a non-local quantum pressure and follow…
We complete the stability study of general relativistic spherically symmetric polytropic perfect fluid spheres, concentrating attention to the newly discovered polytropes containing region of trapped null geodesics. We compare the methods of treating the dynamical stability based on the equation governing infinitesimal radial pulsations of the polytropes and the related Sturm-Liouville eigenvalue equation for the eigenmodes governing the pulsations, to the methods of stability analysis based on the energetic considerations. Both methods are applied to determine the stability of the polytropes …
Spherically symmetric relativistic stars with the polytropic equation of state (EoS), which possess the local pressure anisotropy, are considered within the framework of general relativity. The generalized Lane-Emden equations are derived for the arbitrary anisotropy parameter $Δ=p_t-p_r$ ($p_t$ and $p_r$ being the transverse and radial pressure, respectively). They are then applied to some special ansatz for the anisotropy parameter in the form of the differential relation between the anisotropy parameter $Δ$ and the metric function $ν$. The analytical solutions of the obtained equations are …
A Newtonian uniform ball expanding in empty space constitutes a common heuristic analogy for FLRW cosmology. We discuss possible implementations of the corresponding general-relativistic problem and a variety of new cosmological analogies arising from them. We highlight essential ingredients of the Newtonian analogy, including that the quasilocal energy is always `Newtonian' in the sense that the magnetic part of the Weyl tensor does not contribute to it. A symmetry of the Einstein-Friedmann equations produces another one in the original Newtonian system.
In this paper we study anisotropic spherical polytropes within the framework of general relativity. Using the anisotropic Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkov (TOV) equations, we explore the relativistic anisotropic Lane-Emden equations. We find how the anisotropic pressure affects the boundary conditions of these equations. Also we argue that the behaviour of physical quantities near the center of star changes in the presence of anisotropy. For constant density, a class of exact solution is derived with the aid of a new ansatz and its physical properties are discussed.
With continuous advances in technology, future satellite gradiometry missions will be capable of performing precision relativistic experiments and imposing constraints on modern gravity theories. To this end, the full first-order post-Newtonian tidal tensor under inertially guided and Earth-pointing local frames along post-Newtonian orbits is worked out. The physical picture behind the "Mashhoon-Theiss anomaly" is explained at the post-Newtonian level. The relativistic precession of the local frame with respect to the sidereal frame will produce modulations of Newtonian tidal forces along cert…
With Einstein's inertial motion (free-falling and non-rotating relative to gyroscopes), geodesics for non-relativistic particles can intersect repeatedly, allowing one to compute the space-time curvature $R^{\hat{0} \hat{0}}$ exactly. Einstein's $R^{\hat{0} \hat{0}}$ for strong gravitational fields and for relativistic source-matter is identical with the Newtonian expression for the relative radial acceleration of neighboring free-falling test-particles, spherically averaged.--- Einstein's field equations follow from Newtonian experiments, local Lorentz-covariance, and energy-momentum conserva…
The post-Newtonian hydrodynamic equations for a non-perfect fluid are developed within the framework of a post-Newtonian Boltzmann equation. The post-Newtonian components of the energy-momentum tensor are determined by considering the relativistic Eckart decomposition for a viscous and heat conducting fluid. From the relativistic Grad distribution function its post-Newtonian expression is derived. The hydrodynamic equations for the mass density, mass-energy density and momentum density are determined from a post-Newtonian transfer equation and Grad's distribution function. In the non-relativis…
In this work we evaluate the physical acceptability of relativistic anisotropic spheres modeled by two polytropic equations of state -- with the same newtonian limit -- commonly used to describe compact objects in General Relativity. We integrate numerically the corresponding Lane-Emden equation in order to get density, mass and pressure profiles. An ansatz is used for the anisotropic pressure allowing us to have material configurations slightly deviated from isotropic condition. Numerical models are classified in a parameter space according to the number of physical acceptability conditions t…
Non-equilibrium and equilibrium thermodynamics of an interacting component in a special-relativistic multi-component system is discussed by use of an entropy identity. The special case of the corresponding free component is considered. Equilibrium conditions and especially the multi-component Killing relation of the 4-temperature are discussed. Two axioms characterize the mixture: additivity of the energy momentum tensors and of the 4-entropies of the components generating those of the mixture. The resulting quantities of a component and of the mixture, energy, energy flux, momentum flux, stre…
