In this paper we are concerned with the effects of anisotropic pressure on the boundary conditions of anisotropic Lane-Emden equation and homology theorem. Some new exact solutions of this equation are derived. Then some of the theorems governing the Newtonian perfect fluid star are extended taking the anisotropic pressure into account.
In this paper we explore how far the post-Newtonian theory goes in overcoming the difficulties associated with anisotropic homogeneous cosmologies in the Newtonian approximation. It will be shown that, unlike in the Newtonian case, the cosmological equations of the post-Newtonian approximation are much more in the spirit of general relativity with regard to the nine Bianchi types and issues of singularities. The situations of vanishing rotation and vanishing shear are treated separately. The homogeneous Bianchi I model is considered as an example of a rotation-free cosmology with anisotropy. I…
A general formalism developed few years ago to model polytropic Newtonian stars with anisotropic pressure is applied to model stars for which, both, radial and tangential pressure satisfy polytropic equations of state. We obtain the corresponding Lane--Emden equation, and integrate it for a wide range of values of the parameters, thereby illustrating the effects of the pressure anisotropy on stellar objects. We calculate Chandrasekhar mass for a white dwarf and compare it with previous results. Finally, prospective applications to some astrophysical scenarios are discussed.
We study the dynamical instability of anisotropic collapsing cylinder with the expansion-free condition, which generates vacuum cavity within fluid distribution. The perturbation scheme is applied to distinguish Newtonian, post-Newtonian and post-post Newtonian terms, which are used for constructing dynamical equation at Newtonian and post-Newtonian regimes. We analyze the role of pressure anisotropy and energy density inhomogeneity on the stability of collapsing cylinder. It turns out that stability of the cylinder depends upon these physical properties of the fluid, not on the stiffness of t…
The problem of the dynamical stability of anistropic systems is studied, by proposing a criterion in terms of the adiabatic local index $γ$. The result has general validity and can be applied to several physical situations. Configurations that cannot exist in the isotropic regime can exist in the anisotropic one. Some applications of the criterion are also included.
I use the Newtonian equation of hydrostatic equilibrium for an isotropic fluid sphere to generate exact anisotropic solutions of Einstein's equations. The input function is simply the density. An infinite number of regular solutions are constructed, some of which satisfy all the standard energy conditions. Two classes of these solutions generalize the Newtonian polytropes of index 0 and 1.
We discuss stability of spherically symmetric static solutions in Newtonian limit of Jordan, Brans-Dicke field equations. The behavior of the stable equilibrium solutions for the spherically symmetric configurations considered here, it emerges that the more compact a model is, the more stable it is. Moreover, linear stability analysis shows the existence of stable configurations for any polytropic index.
We use surface adapted ellipsoidal coordinates to obtain a first order post-Newtonian (PN) approximation to Dedekind ellipsoids with the intention of proceeding to higher orders.
We set up the general formalism to model polytropic Newtonian stars with anisotropic pressure. We obtain the corresponding Lane-Emden equation. A heuristic model based on an ansatz to obtain anisotropic matter solutions from known solutions for isotropic matter is adopted to illustrate the effects of the pressure anisotropy on the structure of the star. In particular, we calculate the Chandrasekhar mass for a white dwarf. It is clearly displayed how the Chandrasekhar mass limit changes depending on the anisotropy. Prospective astrophysical applications of the proposed approach are discussed.
We discuss the dynamical analysis in $f(R,T)$ gravity (where $R$ is Ricci scalar and $T$ is trace of energy momentum tensor) for gravitating sources carrying axial symmetry. The self gravitating system is taken to be anisotropic and line element describes axially symmetric geometry avoiding rotation about symmetry axis and meridional motions (zero vorticity case). The modified field equations for axial symmetry in $f(R,T)$ theory are formulated, together with the dynamical equations. Linearly perturbed dynamical equations lead to the evolution equation carrying adiabatic index $Γ$ that defines…
We study the implications of $R^n$ extension of Starobinsky model on dynamical instability of Vorticity-free axially symmetric gravitating body. The matter distribution is considered to be anisotropic for which modified field equations are formed in context of $f(R)$ gravity. In order to achieve the collapse equation, we make use of the dynamical equations, extracted from linearly perturbed contracted Bianchi identities. The collapse equation carries adiabatic index $Γ$ in terms of usual and dark source components, defining the range of stability/insatbility in Newtonian (N) and post-Newtonian…
This paper is devoted to investigate the cylindrical collapse of an anisotropic fluid in $f(R)$ gravity. For this purpose, the viscous charged anisotropic fluid dissipating energy with heat flow and shear is assumed. We use the perturbation scheme to develop the dynamical equations for the variables that ultimately lead to the disturbance of the physical variables and the Starobinksy like $f(R)$ model chosen. The evolution of the matter variables is discussed with the help of these equations. It can be concluded that the range of dynamic instabilities depends on the field strength, density dis…
We investigate the integrability conditions of a class of shear-free perfect-fluid cosmological models within the framework of anisotropic fluid sources, applying our results to f(R) dark energy models. Generalising earlier general relativistic results for time-like geodesics, we extend the potential and acceleration terms of the quasi-Newtonian formulation of integrable dust cosmological models about a linearized Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker background and derive the equations that describe their dynamical evolutions. We show that in general, models with an anisotropic fluid source are…
Using equations of motion accurate to the third post-Newtonian (3PN) order (O(v/c)^6 beyond Newtonian gravity), we derive expressions for the total energy E and angular momentum J of the orbits of compact binary systems (black holes or neutron stars) for arbitrary orbital eccentricity. We also incorporate finite-size contributions such as spin-orbit and spin-spin coupling, and rotational and tidal distortions, calculated to the lowest order of approximation, but we exclude the effects of gravitational radiation damping. We describe how these formulae may be used as an accurate diagnostic of th…
A general formalism recently proposed to study Newtonian polytropes for anisotropic fluids is here extended to the relativistic regime. Thus, it is assumed that a polytropic equation of state is satisfied by, both, the radial and the tangential pressures of the fluid. Doing so the generalized Lane--Emden equations are obtained and solved. Some specific models are obtained, and their physical properties are discussed.
We present a test of the local Lorentz invariance of post-Newtonian gravity by monitoring Earth's gravity with a Mach-Zehnder atom interferometer that features a resolution of about 8*10^(-9)g/Hz^(1/2), the highest reported thus far. Expressed within the standard model extension (SME) or Nordtvedt's anisotropic universe model, the analysis limits four coefficients describing anisotropic gravity at the ppb level and three others, for the first time, at the 10ppm level. Using the SME we explicitly demonstrate how the experiment actually compares the isotropy of gravity and electromagnetism.
A Newtonian-like theory inspired by the Brans-Dicke gravitational Lagrangian has been recently proposed. For static configurations the gravitational coupling acquires an intrinsic spatial dependence within the matter distribution. Therefore, the interior of astrophysical configurations may provide a testable environment for this approach as long as no screening mechanism is evoked. In this work we focus on the stellar hydrostatic equilibrium structure in such varying $G$ scenario. A modified Lane-Emden equation is presented and its solutions for various values of the polytropic index are discu…
We present a formalism to obtain equilibrium configurations of uniformly rotating fluid in the second post-Newtonian approximation of general relativity. In our formalism, we need to solve 29 Poisson equations, but their source terms decrease rapidly enough at the external region of the matter(i.e., at worst $O(r^{-4})$). Hence these Poisson equations can be solved accurately as the boundary value problem using standard numerical methods. This formalism will be useful to obtain nonaxisymmetric uniformly rotating equilibrium configurations such as synchronized binary neutron stars just before me…
In this paper we study anisotropic spherical polytropes within the framework of general relativity. Using the anisotropic Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkov (TOV) equations, we explore the relativistic anisotropic Lane-Emden equations. We find how the anisotropic pressure affects the boundary conditions of these equations. Also we argue that the behaviour of physical quantities near the center of star changes in the presence of anisotropy. For constant density, a class of exact solution is derived with the aid of a new ansatz and its physical properties are discussed.
In this work we evaluate the physical acceptability of relativistic anisotropic spheres modeled by two polytropic equations of state -- with the same newtonian limit -- commonly used to describe compact objects in General Relativity. We integrate numerically the corresponding Lane-Emden equation in order to get density, mass and pressure profiles. An ansatz is used for the anisotropic pressure allowing us to have material configurations slightly deviated from isotropic condition. Numerical models are classified in a parameter space according to the number of physical acceptability conditions t…
In this paper, we have reviewed the present status of the theory of equilibrium configurations of compact binary star systems in Newtonian gravity. Evolutionary processes of compact binary star systems due to gravitational wave emission can be divided into three stages according to the time scales and configurations. The evolution is quasi-stationary until a merging process starts, since the time scale of the orbital change due to gravitational wave emission is longer than the orbital period. In this stage, equilibrium sequences can be applied to evolution of compact binary star systems. Along…
In this work we study the influence of the newtonian noise on atom interferometers applied to the detection of gravitational waves, and we compute the resulting limits to the sensitivity in two different configurations: a single atom interferometer, or a pair of atom interferometers operated in a differential configuration. We find that for the instrumental configurations considered, and operating in the frequency range [0.1-10] Hz, the limits would be comparable to those affecting large scale optical interferometers.
We consider thin spherical shells of matter in both Newtonian gravity and general relativity, and examine their equilibrium configurations and dynamical stability. Thin-shell models are admittedly a poor substitute for realistic stellar models. But the simplicity of the equations that govern their dynamics, compared with the much more complicated mechanics of a self-gravitating fluid, allows us to deliver, in a very direct and easy manner, powerful insights regarding their equilibria and stability. We explore, in particular, the link between the existence of a maximum mass along a sequence of …
In this paper, we study a family of two-component anisotropic polytropes which model a wide range of spherically symmetric astrophysical systems such as early-type baryonic galaxies. This family is found to contain a large class of models such as the hypervirial family (which satisfy the virial theorem locally), the Plummer and Hernquist models and Navarro-Frenk-White (NFW)-like models. The potential--density pair for these models are derived, as well as their velocity dispersions and anisotropy parameters. The projected quantities are computed and found to reduce to analytical expressions in …
In this paper, we have continued the work of Herrera \emph{et al.} \cite{herrera2012dynamical} in $f(G)$ gravitational theory. For this purpose, a spherically symmetric fluid exhibiting locally anisotropic pressure along with the energy density, is taken under consideration. The perturbation scheme is imposed on modified field equations and the dynamical equations. The collapse equation is devised from these perturbed equations which stimulates to disclose the instability zone under both Newtonian and post-Newtonian constraints. It is wrapped up by concluding that dynamical instability is inte…
We determine the onset point of secular instability for the nonaxisymmetric bar mode in rigidly rotating equilibrium configurations in the Post-Newtonian approximation, in order to apply it to neutron stars. The treatment is based on a precedent Newtonian analytic energy variational method which we have extended to the Post-Newtonian case. This method, based upon Landau's theory of second-order phase transitions, provides the critical value of the ellipsoid polar eccentricity e at the onset of viscosity-driven instability and it is valid for any equation of state. The extension of this method …
We set up in detail the general formalism to model polytropic general relativistic stars with anisotropic pressure. We shall consider two different possible polytropic equations, all of which yield the same Lane-Emden equation in the Newtonian limit. A heuristic model based on an ansatz to obtain anisotropic matter solutions from known solutions for isotropic matter is adopted to illustrate the effects of the pressure anisotropy on the structure of the star. In this context, the Tolman mass, which is a measure of the active gravitational mass, is invoked to explain some features of the models.…
We use a post-Newtonian diagnostic tool to examine numerically generated quasiequilibrium initial data sets for non-spinning double neutron star and neutron star-black hole binary systems. The PN equations include the effects of tidal interactions, parametrized by the compactness of the neutron stars and by suitable values of ``apsidal'' constants, which measure the degree of distortion of stars subjected to tidal forces. We find that the post-Newtonian diagnostic agrees well with the double neutron star initial data, typically to better than half a percent except where tidal distortions are b…
In this work we have discussed the implications of shear-free condition on axially symmetric anisotropic gravitating objects in $f(R,T)$ theory. Restricted axial symmetry ignoring rotation and reflection enteries is taken into account for establishment of instability range. Implementation of linear perturbation on constitutive modified dynamical equations yield evolution equation. This equation associates adiabatic index $Γ$ with material and dark source components defining stable and unstable regions in Newtonian (N) and post-Newtonian (pN) approximations.
We consider general metric $f(R)$ theories of gravity by solving the field equations in the presence of a spherical static mass distribution by analytical perturbative means. Expanding the field equations systematically in $\cO(G)$, we solve the resulting set of equations and show that $f(R)$ theories which attempt to solve the dark energy problem very generally lead to $γ_{PPN}=1/2$ in the solar system. This excludes a large class of theories as possible explanations of dark energy. We also present the first order correction to $γ_{PPN}$ and show that it cannot have a significant effect.
Well-posedness for the initial value problem for a self-gravitating elastic body with free boundary in Newtonian gravity is proved. In the material frame, the Euler-Lagrange equation becomes, assuming suitable constitutive properties for the elastic material, a fully non-linear elliptic-hyperbolic system with boundary conditions of Neumann type. For systems of this type, the initial data must satisfy compatibility conditions in order to achieve regular solutions. Given a relaxed reference configuration and a sufficiently small Newton's constant, a neigborhood of initial data satisfying the com…

Relativistic, spherically symmetric configurations consisting of a gravitating magnetized anisotropic fluid are studied. For such configurations, we obtain static equilibrium solutions with an axisymmetric, poloidal magnetic field produced by toroidal electric currents. The presence of such a field results in small deviations of the shape of the configuration from spherical symmetry. This in turn leads to the modification of an equation for the current and correspondingly to changes in the structure of the internal magnetic field for the systems supported by the anisotropic fluid, in contrast …
We investigate the stability of self-gravitating spherically symmetric anisotropic spheres under radial perturbations. We consider both the Newtonian and the full general-relativistic perturbation treatment. In the general-relativistic case, we extend the variational formalism for spheres with isotropic pressure developed by Chandrasekhar. We find that, in general, when the tangential pressure is greater than the radial pressure, the stability of the anisotropic sphere is enhanced when compared to isotropic configurations. In particular, anisotropic spheres are found to be stable for smaller v…

This paper investigates the coplanar and circular three-body problem in the parametrized post-Newtonian (PPN) formalism, for which we focus on a class of fully conservative theories characterized by the Eddington-Robertson parameters $β$ and $γ$. It is shown that there can still exist a collinear equilibrium configuration and a triangular one, each of which is a generalization of the post-Newtonian equilibrium configuration in general relativity. The collinear configuration can exist for arbitrary mass ratio, $β$, and $γ$. On the other hand, the PPN triangular configuration depends on the nonl…
In this work, we study the effect of a magnetic field on the growth of cosmological perturbations. We develop a mathematical consistent treatment in which a perfect fluid and a uniform magnetic field evolve together in a Bianchi I universe. We then study the energy density perturbations on this background with particular emphasis on the effect of the background magnetic field. We develop a full relativistic solution which refines previous analysis in the relativistic limit, recovers the known ones in the Newtonian treatment with adiabatic sound speed, and it adds anisotropic effects to the rel…
In this paper, the dynamical equations and junction conditions at the interface between adjacent layers of different elastic properties for an elastic deformable astronomical body in the first post-Newtonian approximation of Einstein theory of gravity are discussed in both rotating Cartesian coordinates and rotating spherical coordinates. The unperturbed rotating body (the ground state) is described as uniformly rotating, stationary and axisymmetric configuration in an asymptotically flat space-time manifold. Deviations from the equilibrium configuration are described by means of a displacemen…
A new class of solution describing an anisotropic stellar configuration satisfying Karmarkar's condition i.e. spherically symmetric metric of embedding class 1, is reported. It has been shown that the compact star model is physically well-behaved and meet all the physical requirements for a stable configuration in hydrostatic equilibrium. Our model describes compact stars like Vela X-1 and 4U1608-52 to a very good approximation.
This paper explored the physical acceptability conditions for anisotropic matter configurations in General Relativity. The study considered a generalized polytropic equation of state $P=κρ^γ+αρ-β$ for a heuristic anisotropy. We integrated the corresponding Lane-Emden equation for several hundred models and found the parameter-space portion ensuring the configurations' acceptability. Polytrope based on the total energy density are more stable than those with baryonic density, and small positive local anisotropies produce acceptable models. We also found that polytropic configurations where tang…
Continuing work initiated in earlier publications [Yamada, Asada, Phys. Rev. D 82, 104019 (2010), 83, 024040 (2011)], we investigate the post-Newtonian effects on Lagrange's equilateral triangular solution for the three-body problem. For three finite masses, it is found that the equilateral triangular configuration satisfies the post-Newtonian equation of motion in general relativity, if and only if all three masses are equal. When a test mass is included, the equilateral configuration is possible for two cases: (1) one mass is finite and the other two are zero, or (2) two of the masses are fi…
The implications of shearfree condition on instability range of anisotropic fluid in $f(R,T)$ are studied in this manuscript. A viable $f(R, T)$ model is chosen to arrive at stability criterion, where $R$ is Ricci scalar and $T$ is the trace of energy momentum tensor. The evolution of spherical star is explored by employing perturbation scheme on modified field equations and contracted Bianchi identities in $f(R, T)$. The effect of imposed shearfree condition on collapse equation and adiabatic index $Γ$ is studied in Newtonian and post-Newtonian regimes.
We analyze dynamical instability of non-static reflection axial stellar structure by taking into account generalized Euler's equation in metric $f(R)$ gravity. Such an equation is obtained by contracting Bianchi identities of usual anisotropic and effective stress-energy tensors, which after using radial perturbation technique gives modified collapse equation. In the realm of $R+εR^n$ gravity model, we investigate instability constraints at Newtonian and post-Newtonian approximations. We find that instability of meridional axial self-gravitating system depends upon static profile of structure …
Continuing work initiated in an earlier publication [Ichita, Yamada and Asada, Phys. Rev. D 83, 084026 (2011)], we reexamine the post-Newtonian effects on Lagrange's equilateral triangular solution for the three-body problem. For three finite masses, it is found that a triangular configuration satisfies the post-Newtonian equation of motion in general relativity, if and only if it has the relativistic corrections to each side length. This post-Newtonian configuration for three finite masses is not always equilateral and it recovers previous results for the restricted three-body problem when on…
Spin precession occurs in binary black holes whose spins are misaligned with the orbital angular momentum. Otherwise, the spin configuration is constant and the subsequent binary dynamics and gravitational-wave emission are much simpler. We summarize a series of works which has shown that, while three of the aligned configurations are stable equilibria, the `up-down' configuration, in which the heavier (lighter) black hole is (anti) aligned with the orbital angular momentum, is unstable when perturbed; at a critical point in the inspiral the black hole spins begin to tilt wildly as precession …
By means of a highly accurate, multi-domain, pseudo-spectral method, we investigate the solution space of uniformly rotating, homogeneous and axisymmetric relativistic fluid bodies. It turns out that this space can be divided up into classes of solutions. In this paper, we present two new classes including relativistic core-ring and two-ring solutions. Combining our knowledge of the first four classes with post-Newtonian results and the Newtonian portion of the first ten classes, we present the qualitative behaviour of the entire relativistic solution space. The Newtonian disc limit can only b…
Spherical systems with polytropic equations of state are of great interest in astrophysics. They are widely used to describe neutron stars, red giants, white dwarfs, brown dwarfs, main sequence stars, galactic halos, and globular clusters of diverse sizes. In this paper we construct analytically a family of self-gravitating spherical models in the post-Newtonian approximation of general relativity. These models present interesting cusps in their density profiles which are appropriate for the modeling of galaxies and dark matter halos. The systems described here are anisotropic in the sense tha…
We derive constraints on corrections to Newtonian gravity of the Yukawa type and light elementary particles from two recently performed measurements of the gradient of the Casimir force. In the first measurement the configuration of two Au surfaces has been used, whereas in the second a nonmagnetic metal Au interacted with a magnetic metal Ni. In these configurations one arrives at different, respectively, similar theoretical predictions for the Casimir force when the competing theoretical approaches are employed. Nevertheless, we demonstrate that the constraints following from both experiment…
Although general relativistic cosmological solutions, even in the presence of pressure, can be mimicked by using neo-Newtonian hydrodynamics, it is not clear whether there exists the same Newtonian correspondence for spherical static configurations. General relativity solutions for stars are known as the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff (TOV) equations. On the other hand, the Newtonian description does not take into account the total pressure effects and therefore can not be used in strong field regimes. We discuss how to incorporate pressure in the stellar equilibrium equations within the neo-Newto…
We study the validity of the Newtonian description of cosmological perturbations using the Lemaitre model, an exact spherically symmetric solution of Einstein's equation. This problem has been investigated in the past for the case of a dust fluid. Here, we extend the previous analysis to the more general case of a fluid with non-negligible pressure, and, for the numerical examples, we consider the case of radiation (P=ρ/3). We find that, even when the density contrast has a nonlinear amplitude, the Newtonian description of the cosmological perturbations using the gravitational potential ψand t…
The non-linear dynamics of irrotational dust in General Relativity is studied in synchronous and comoving coordinates. All the equations are written in terms of the metric tensor of spatial sections orthogonal to the flow, which allows an unambiguous expansion in powers of $1/c^2$. To lowest order, the Newtonian approximation in Lagrangian form is derived. At this level the evolution is governed by the Raychaudhuri equation for the Lagrangian-to-Eulerian Jacobian matrix. The Lagrangian spatial metric reduces to that of Euclidean 3-space in time-dependent curvilinear coordinates. A Lagrangian v…
In a previous paper [arXiv:1308.1852] we showed how a finite system of discrete particles interacting with each other via Newtonian gravitational attraction would lead to precisely the same dynamical equations for homothetic motion as in the case of the pressure-free Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker cosmological models of General Relativity Theory, provided the distribution of particles obeys the central configuration equation. In this paper we show one can obtain perturbed such Newtonian solutions that give the same linearised structure growth equations as in the general relativity case. W…

In this paper, we are interested in exploring the existence of stealth configurations on anisotropic backgrounds playing a prominent role in the non-relativistic version of the gauge/gravity correspondence. By stealth configuration, we mean a nontrivial scalar field nonminimally coupled to gravity whose energy-momentum tensor evaluated on the anisotropic background vanishes identically. In the case of a Lifshitz spacetime with a nontrivial dynamical exponent z, we spotlight the role played by the anisotropy to establish the holographic character of the stealth configurations, i.e. the scalar f…
