The emergence of collective behaviors and the existence of large amplitude motions are both central features in the fields of nuclear structure and reactions. From a theoretical point of view, describing such phenomena requires increasing the complexity of the many-body wavefunction of the system to account for long-range correlations. One of the challenges, when going in this direction, is to keep the approach tractable within our current computational resources while gaining a maximum of predictive power for the phenomenon under study. In the Generator Coordinate Method (GCM), the many-body wave function is a linear superposition of (generally non-orthogonal) many-body states (the generator states) labeled by a few collective coordinates. Such a method has been widely used in structure studies to restore the symmetries broken by single-reference approaches. In the domain of reactions, its time-dependent version (TDGCM) has been developed and applied to predict the dynamics of heavy-ion collisions or fission where the collective fluctuations play an essential role. In this review, we present the recent developments and applications of the TDGCM in nuclear reactions. We recall the formal derivations of the TDGCM and its most common approximate treatment, the Gaussian Overlap Approximation. We also emphasize the Schrödinger Collective-Intrinsic Model (SCIM) variant focused on the inclusion of quasiparticle excitations into the description. Finally, we highlight several exploratory studies related to a TDGCM built on time-dependent generator states.
An event generator for the description of nuclear reactions in the Fermi energy range is briefly introduced and first comparisons with experimental data are shown.
We investigate the accuracy of several schemes to calculate ground-state correlation energies using the generator coordinate technique. Our test-bed for the study is the $sd$ interacting boson model, equivalent to a 6-level Lipkin-type model. We find that the simplified projection of a triaxial generator coordinate state using the $S_3$ subgroup of the rotation group is not very accurate in the parameter space of the Hamiltonian of interest. On the other hand, a full rotational projection of an axial generator coordinate state gives remarkable accuracy. We also discuss the validity of the simp…
We present a generator-coordinate method for realistic shell-model Hamiltonians that closely approximates the full shell model calculations of the matrix elements for the neutrinoless double-$β$ decay of $^{124}$Sn, $^{130}$Te, and $^{136}$Xe. We treat not only quadrupole deformations but also the proton-neutron pairing amplitudes as generator coordinates. We validate this method by calculating and comparing spectroscopic quantities with the exact shell model results and experimental data. Our Hamiltonian-based generator-coordinate method produces $0νββ$ matrix elements much closer to the shel…
We propose a consistent prescription for the derivation of the particle number and angular momentum projected QRPA (PQRPA) equation in the Generator Coordinate Method (GCM) framework for calculation of NME's of double-beta decay of axially deformed nuclei. We derive closed formulae for the calculation of excitation energies and wave functions of the intermediate nucleus.
We treat proton-neutron pairing amplitudes, in addition to the nuclear deformation, as generator coordinates in a calculation of the neutrinoless double-beta decay of 76Ge. We work in two oscillator shells, with a Hamiltonian that includes separable terms in the quadrupole, spin-isospin, and pairing (isovector and isoscalar) channels. Our approach allows larger single-particle spaces than the shell model and includes the important physics of the proton-neutron quasiparticle random-phase approximation (QRPA) without instabilities near phase transitions. After comparing the results of a simplifi…
We present a mechanism to efficiently pre-select the number of intrinsic many-body states that are used to define the many-body wave functions within the discrete Generator Coordinate Method (GCM). This procedure, based on the proper definition of a natural basis of orthonormal states, does not require the evaluation of the non-diagonal Hamiltonian kernels to do the selection and helps to reduce the numerical instabilities. The performance of the method is analyzed in detail in the ground state and $0^{+}$ excited states of some selected nuclei computed with the Gogny energy density functional…
It has been known that the time-dependent Hartree-Fock (TDHF) method, or the time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT), fails to describe many-body quantum tunneling. We overcome this problem by superposing a few time-dependent Slater determinants with the time-dependent generator coordinate method (TDGCM). We apply this method to scattering of two $α$ particles in one dimension, and demonstrate that the TDGCM method yields a finite tunneling probability even at energies below the Coulomb barrier, at which the tunneling probability is exactly zero in the TDHF. This is the first case in …
In this work, we derived a transport equation based on a generalized equation of time-dependent generator coordinate method (TDGCM) under the Gaussian overlap approximation (GOA). The transport equation is obtained by using quantum-mechanics phase space distributions under a ``quasi-particle" picture and strategy of Bogoliubov-Born-Green-Kirkood-Yvon (BBGKY) hierarchy. The theoretical advantage of this transport equation is that time evolution of $s$-body phase space density distribution is coupled with $s+1$-body phase space density distributions, and thus, non-adiabatic effects and dynamical…
The similarity renormalization group (SRG) has been successfully applied to soften interactions for ab initio nuclear calculations. In almost all practical applications in nuclear physics, an SRG generator with the kinetic energy operator is used. With this choice, a fast convergence of many-body calculations can be achieved, but at the same time substantial three-body interactions are induced even if one starts from a purely two-nucleon (NN) Hamiltonian. Three-nucleon (3N) interactions can be handled by modern many-body methods. However, it has been observed that when including initial chiral…
The generator coordinate method begins with the variational construction of a set of non-orthogonal mean-field states that span a subspace of the full many-body Hilbert space. These states are then often projected onto states with good quantum numbers to restore symmetries, leading to a set with members that can be similar to one another, and it is sometimes possible to reduce this set without greatly affecting results. Here we propose a greedy algorithm that we call the energy-transition-orthogonality procedure (ENTROP) to select subsets of important states. As applied here, the approach sele…
Good many-body methods for medium and heavy nuclei are important. Here we combine ideas from standard generator-coordinate methods (GCM) and the so-called Monte Carlo shell model, and set forth a novel approach: starting from a mean-field solution (Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov), we create a set of non-orthogonal basis states, by using low-lying vibrational quasiparticleTamm-Dancoff modes, and then project onto states of good angular momentum and particle number. The results we benchmark against full shell model calculations. Even with just a few such modes we find improvement over standard GCM calc…
The main characteristics of the ground and, in particular, the first excited monopole state in the $^{4}$He, $^{16}$O and $^{40}$Ca nuclei are studied within the generator coordinate method using Skyrme-type effective forces and three construction potentials, namely the harmonic-oscillator, the square-well and Woods-Saxon potentials. Calculations of density distributions, radii, nucleon momentum distributions, natural orbitals, occupation numbers and depletions of the Fermi sea, as well as of pair density and momentum distributions are carried out. A comparison of these quantities for both gro…
We use the generator-coordinate method with realistic shell-model interactions to closely approximate full shell-model calculations of the matrix elements for the neutrinoless double-beta decay of $^{48}$Ca, $^{76}$Ge, and $^{82}$Se. We work in one major shell for the first isotope, in the $f_{5/2}pg_{9/2}$ space for the second and third, and finally in two major shells for all three. Our coordinates include not only the usual axial deformation parameter $β$, but also the triaxiality angle $γ$ and neutron-proton pairing amplitudes. In the smaller model spaces our matrix elements agree well wit…
A new approach called the Schrödinger Collective Intrinsic Model (SCIM) has been developed to achieve a microscopic description of the coupling between collective and intrinsic excitations. The derivation of the SCIM proceeds in two steps. The first step is based on a generalization of the symmetric moment expansion of the equations derived in the framework of the Generator Coordinate Method (GCM), when both Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) states and two-quasi-particle excitations are taken into account as basis states. The second step consists in reducing the generalized Hill and Wheeler equati…
The existing formalism used to compute the operator overlaps necessary to carry out generator coordinate method calculations using a set of Hartree- Fock- Bogoliubov wave functions, is generalized to the case where each of the HFB states are expanded in different arbitrary bases spanning different sub-space of the Hilbert space.
A model is developed to calculate the total kinetic energy (TKE) distribution of fission fragments in the framework of the time-dependent generator coordinate method (TDGCM), extended to include dissipation effects in the description of induced fission dynamics. Starting from an expression for the dissipative term in the GCM Hamiltonian that determines the time evolution of a statistical collective wave function, derived in the first part of this work, the integrated flux of the probability current through the scission hyper-surface can be computed at different temperatures. The kinetic energy…
Exact canonically conjugate momenta Pi_{2mu} in quadrupole nuclear collective motions are proposed. The basic idea lies in the introduction of a discrete integral equation for the strict definition of canonically conjugate momenta to collective variables phi_{2mu}. A part of our collective Hamiltonian, the Pi_{2mu}-dependence of the kinetic part of the Hamiltonian, is given exactly. Further, phi_{2mu}-dependence of the kinetic part of the Hamiltonian is also given.
An approach to the Generator Coordinate Method (GCM) using Skyrme-type effective forces and Woods-Saxon construction potential is applied to calculate the single-particle proton and neutron overlap functions in $^{40}$Ca. The relationship between the bound-state overlap functions and the one-body density matrix has been used. These overlap functions are applied to calculate the cross sections of one-nucleon removal reactions such as ($e,e'p$), ($γ,p$) and ($p,d$) on $^{40}$Ca on the same theoretical footing. A consistent description of data for the different reactions is achieved. The shapes o…
The extraction of neutrino oscillation parameters requires the determination of the neutrino energy from observations of the hadronic final state. The use of nuclear targets then requires the use of event generators to isolate the interesting elementary processes and to take experimental acceptances into account. In this talk I briefly summarize the history of event generators and their use in nuclear physics, talk briefly about the generators used in the neutrino community and then discuss future necessary developments.
Since its beginnings, fission theory has asumed that low-energy induced fission takes place through transition-state channels at the barrier tops. Neverthess, up to now there is no microscopic theory applicable to those conditions. We suggest that modern reaction theory is suitable for this purpose, and propose a methodology based on a configuration-interaction framework using the Generator Coordinate Method (GCM). Simple reaction-theoretic models are constructed with the Gaussian Overlap Approximation (GOA) to parameterize both the dynamics within the channels and their incoherent couplings t…
It is found that $α$ cluster structure has the apparently opposing dual property of crystallinity and condensation simultaneously. The mathematical equivalence of the spatially localized Brink $α$ cluster model in the generator coordinate method (GCM) and the nonlocalized cluster model (NCM), which is also called the THSR (Tohsaki-Horiuchi-Schuck-R$\ddot{\rm o}$pke) wave function based on the condensation of $α$ clusters, is shown. The latter is found to be an equivalent representation of the localized cluster model and it is a natural consequence that the many NCM (THSR) calculations reproduc…
The principles behind the detailed results of a light-front mean field theory of finite nuclei are elucidated by deriving the nucleon mode equation using a simple general argument, based on the idea that a static source in equal time coordinates corresponds to a moving source in light front coordinates. This idea also allows us to solve several simple toy model examples: scalar field in a box, 1+1 dimensional bag model, three-dimensional harmonic oscillator and the Hulthén potential. The latter provide simplified versions of momentum distributions and form factors of relevance to experiments. …
We investigate truncation schemes to reduce the computational cost of calculating correlations by the generator coordinate method based on mean-field wave functions. As our test nuclei, we take examples for which accurate calculations are available. These include a strongly deformed nucleus, 156Sm, a nucleus with strong pairing, 120Sn, the krypton isotope chain which contains examples of soft deformations, and the lead isotope chain which includes the doubly magic 208Pb. We find that the Gaussian overlap approximation for angular momentum projection is effective and reduces the computational c…
Semi-inclusive $CCν$ cross sections based on factorized cross sections are studied for a selection of spectral function models with the objective of facilitating the choice of models for use as input into event generators. The basic formalism for such cross sections is presented along with an introduction to constructing spectral functions for simple models based on the independent particle shell model (IPSM), the relativistic Fermi gas model (RFG) and a local density approximation (LDA) based on the RFG. Spectral functions for these models are shown for $^{16}$O along with a more sophisticate…
We present recent results in theoretical studies on nuclear structure and reaction beyond mean field, using the adiabatic self-consistent collective coordinate method and its extension. We also present new results with the finite-temperature Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov calculation with the three-dimensional-coordinate-space representation.
A C++ code for the solution of the relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov theory in coordinate space is presented. The theory describes a nucleus as a relativistic system of baryons and mesons. The RHB model is applied in the self-consistent mean-field approximation to the description of ground state properties of spherical nuclei. Finite range interactions are included to describe pairing correlations and the coupling to particle continuum states. Finite element methods are used in the coordinate space discretization of the coupled system of Dirac-Hartree-Bogoliubov integro-differential eigenvalue e…

We discuss an extension of the generator coordinate method (GCM) by taking simultaneously a collective coordinate and its conjugate momentum as generator coordinates. To this end, we follow the idea of the dynamical GCM (DGCM) proposed by Goeke and Reinhard. We first show that the DGCM method can be regarded as an extension of the double projection method for the center of mass motion. As an application of DGCM, we then investigate the particle number projection, for which we not only carry out an integral over the gauge angle as in the usual particle number projection but also take a linear s…
A Monte Carlo generator of the final state of hadrons emitted from an ultrarelativistic nuclear collision is introduced. An important feature of the generator is a possible fragmentation of the fireball and emission of the hadrons from fragments. Phase space distribution of the fragments is based on the blast wave model extended to azimuthally non-symmetric fireballs. Parameters of the model can be tuned and this allows to generate final states from various kinds of fireballs. A facultative output in the OSCAR1999A format allows for a comprehensive analysis of phase-space distributions and/or …
We apply the generator coordinate method (GCM) to single-$Λ$ hypernuclei in order to discuss the spectra of hypernuclear low-lying states. To this end, we use the same relativistic point-coupling energy functional both for the mean-field and the beyond-mean-field calculations. This relativistic GCM approach provides a unified description of low-lying states in ordinary nuclei and in hypernuclei, and is thus suitable for studying the $Λ$ impurity effect. We carry out an illustrative calculation for the low-lying spectrum of $^{21}_Λ$Ne, in which the interplay between the hypernuclear collective…
Low-energy positive and negative parity collective states in the equilibrium minimum, and the dynamics of induced fission of actinide nuclei are investigated in a unified theoretical framework based on the generator coordinate method (GCM) with the Gaussian overlap approximation (GOA). The collective potential and inertia tensor, both at zero and finite temperature, are computed using the self-consistent multidimensionally constrained relativistic mean field (MDC-RMF) model, based on the energy density functional DD-PC1. Pairing correlations are treated in the BCS approximation with a separabl…
We study the feasibility of applying the Generator Coordinate Method (GCM) of self-consistent mean-field theory to calculate decay widths of composite particles to composite-particle final states. The main question is how well the GCM can approximate continuum wave functions in the decay channels. The analysis is straightforward under the assumption that the GCM wave functions are separable into internal and Gaussian center-of-mass wave functions. Two methods are examined for calculating decays widths. In one method, the density of final states is computed entirely in the GCM framework. In the…
We describe the software package FELIX that solves the equations of the time-dependent generator coordinate method (TDGCM) in N-dimensions (N $\geq$ 1) under the Gaussian overlap approximation. The numerical resolution is based on the Galerkin finite element discretization of the collective space and the Crank-Nicolson scheme for time integration. The TDGCM solver is implemented entirely in C++. Several additional tools written in C++, Python or bash scripting language are also included for convenience. In this paper, the solver is tested with a series of benchmarks calculations. We also demon…

We apply the dynamical generator coordinate method (DGCM) with a conjugate momentum to a nuclear collective excitation. To this end, we first discuss how to construct a numerically workable scheme of the DGCM for a general one-body operator. We then apply the DGCM to the quadrupole vibration of $^{16}$O using the Gogny D1S interaction. We show that both the ground state energy and the excitation energies are lowered as compared to the conventional GCM with the same number of basis functions. We also compute the sum rule values for the quadrupole and monopole operators, and show that the DGCM y…
\noindent\textbf{Background:} While many phenomenological models for nuclear fission have been developed, a microscopic understanding of fission has remained one of the most challenging problems in nuclear physics. \noindent\textbf{Purpose:} We investigate an applicability of the generator coordinate method (GCM) as a microscopic theory for cluster radioactivities of heavy nuclei, which can be regarded as a fission with large mass asymmetry, that is, a phenomenon in between fission and $α$-decays. \noindent\textbf{Methods:} Based on the Gamow theory, we evaluate the preformation probability of…
The collective pairing hamiltonian is obtained in the framework of the generator coordinate method in the gaussian overlap approximation with a slightly modified BCS function used as a generator function. The collective variable alpha, measuring the monopole moment of the pairing field, and the gauge transformation angle phi are chosen as generator coordinates. The vibrational ground states are calculated by diagonalisation of the collective pairing hamiltonian in the harmonic oscillator basis.
Compactness is introduced as a new method to search for the onset of the quark matter transition in relativistic heavy ion collisions. That transition supposedly leads to stronger compression and higher compactness of the source in coordinate space. That effect could be observed via pion interferometry. We propose to measure the compactness of the source in the appropriate principal axis frame of the compactness tensor in coordinate space.
${\bf Background:}$ Weakly bound and unbound nuclear states appearing around particle thresholds are prototypical open quantum systems. Theories of such states must take into account configuration mixing effects in the presence of strong coupling to the particle continuum space. ${\bf Purpose:}$ To describe structure and decays of three-body systems, we developed a Gamow coupled-channel (GCC) approach in Jacobi coordinates by employing the complex-momentum formalism. We benchmarked the new framework against the complex-energy Gamow Shell Model (GSM). ${\bf Methods:}$ The GCC formalism is expre…
Starting from a quantum theory of dissipation for nuclear collective motion, the time-dependent generator coordinate method (TDGCM) is extended to allow for dissipation effects in the description of induced fission dynamics. The extension is based on a generalization of the GCM generating functions that includes excited states, and the resulting equation of motion in the collective coordinates and excitation energy. With the assumption of a narrow hamiltonian kernel, an expansion in a power series in collective momenta leads to a Schrödinger-like equation that explicitly includes a dissipation…
Recent progress in nuclear-structure theory has been dramatic. I describe recent and future applications of ab initio calculations and the generator coordinate method to double-beta decay. I also briefly discuss the old and vexing problem of the renormalization of the weak nuclear axial-vector coupling constant "in medium" and plans to resolve it.
We present the first application of a new approach, proposed in [Journal of Physics G: Nuclear and Particle Physics, 43, 04LT01 (2016)] to derive coupling constants of the Skyrme energy density functional (EDF) from ab initio Hamiltonian. By perturbing the ab initio Hamiltonian with several functional generators defining the Skyrme EDF, we create a set of metadata that is then used to constrain the coupling constants of the functional. We use statistical analysis to obtain such an ab initio-equivalent Skyrme EDF. We find that the resulting functional describes properties of atomic nuclei and i…

Background: The isospin mixing is an interesting feature of atomic nuclei. It plays a crucial role in astrophysical nuclear reactions. However, it is not straightforward for variational nuclear structure models to describe it. Purpose: We propose a tractable method to describe the isospin mixing within a framework of the generator coordinate method and demonstrate its usability. Method: We generate the basis wave functions by applying the Fermi transition operator to the wave functions of isobars. The superposition of these basis wave functions and variationally obtained wave functions quantit…
The generator coordinate method (GCM) casts the wavefunction as an integral over a weighted set of non-orthogonal single determinantal states. In principle this representation can be used like the configuration interaction (CI) or shell model to systematically improve the approximate wavefunction towards an exact solution. In practice applications have generally been limited to systems with less than three degrees of freedom. This bottleneck is directly linked to the exponential computational expense associated with the numerical projection of broken symmetry Hartree-Fock (HF) or Hartree-Fock-…
The momentum distributions of partons in bound nucleons are known to depend significantly on the size of the nucleus. The Fourier transform of the momentum ($\xbj$) distribution measures the overlap between Fock components of the nucleon wave function which differ by a displacement of one parton along the light cone. The magnitude of the overlap thus determines the average range of mobility of the parton in the nucleon. By comparing the Fourier transforms of structure functions for several nuclei we study the dependence of quark mobility on nuclear size. We find a surprisingly small nuclear de…
