In this paper we study structural properties of residuated lattices that are idempotent as monoids. We provide descriptions of the totally ordered members of this class and obtain counting theorems for the number of finite algebras in various subclasses. We also establish the finite embeddability property for certain varieties generated by classes of residuated lattices that are conservative in the sense that monoid multiplication always yields one of its arguments. We then make use of a more symmetric version of Raftery's characterization theorem for totally ordered commutative idempotent residuated lattices to prove that the variety generated by this class has the amalgamation property. Finally, we address an open problem in the literature by giving an example of a noncommutative variety of idempotent residuated lattices that has the amalgamation property.
We characterize commutative idempotent involutive residuated lattices as disjoint unions of Boolean algebras arranged over a distributive lattice. We use this description to introduce a new construction, called gluing, that allows us to build new members of this variety from other ones. In particular, all finite members can be constructed in this way from Boolean algebras. Finally, we apply our construction to prove that the fusion reduct of any finite member is a distributive semilattice, and to show that this variety is not locally finite.
We define lifting properties for universal algebras, which we study in this general context and then particularize to various such properties in certain classes of algebras. Next we focus on residuated lattices, in which we investigate lifting properties for Boolean and idempotent elements modulo arbitrary, as well as specific kinds of filters. We give topological characterizations to the lifting property for Boolean elements and several properties related to it, many of which we obtain by means of the reticulation.
Hahn's embedding theorem asserts that linearly ordered abelian groups embed in some lexicographic product of real groups. Hahn's theorem is generalized to a class of residuated semigroups in this paper, namely, to odd involutive commutative residuated chains which possess only finitely many idempotent elements. To this end, the partial sublex product construction is introduced to construct new odd involutive commutative residuated lattices from a pair of odd involutive commutative residuated lattices, and a representation theorem for odd involutive commutative residuated chains which possess o…
This paper deals with many-valued modal logics, based only on the necessity operator, over a residuated lattice. We focus on three basic classes, according to the accessibility relation, of Kripke frames: the full class of frames evaluated in the residuated lattice (and so defining the minimum modal logic), the ones evaluated in the idempotent elements and the ones evaluated in 0 and 1. We show how to expand an axiomatization, with canonical constants in the language, of a finite residuated lattice into one of the modal logic, for each one of the three basic classes of Kripke frames, over the …
A commutative residuated lattice A is said to be subidempotent if the lower bounds of its neutral element e are idempotent (in which case they naturally constitute a Brouwerian algebra A*). It is proved here that epimorphisms are surjective in a variety K of such algebras A (with or without involution), provided that each finitely subdirectly irreducible algebra B in K has two properties: (1) B is generated by lower bounds of e, and (2) the poset of prime filters of B* has finite depth. Neither (1) nor (2) may be dropped. The proof adapts to the presence of bounds. The result generalizes some …
In this paper we define the Boolean Lifting Property (BLP) for residuated lattices to be the property that all Boolean elements can be lifted modulo every filter, and study residuated lattices with BLP. Boolean algebras, chains, local and hyperarchimedean residuated lattices have BLP. BLP behaves interestingly in direct products and involutive residuated lattices, and it is closely related to arithmetic properties involving Boolean elements, nilpotent elements and elements of the radical. When BLP is present, strong representation theorems for semilocal and maximal residuated lattices hold.
We prove that every integral rig in Sets is (functorially) the rig of global sections of a sheaf of really local integral rigs. We also show that this representation result may be lifted to residuated integral rigs and then restricted to varieties of these. In particular, as a corollary, we obtain a representation theorem for pre-linear residuated join-semilattices in terms of totally ordered fibers. The restriction of this result to the level of MV-algebras coincides with the Dubuc-Poveda representation theorem.
In this paper we define, inspired by ring theory, the class of maximal residuated lattices with lifting Boolean center and prove a structure theorem for them: any maximal residuated lattice with lifting Boolean center is isomorphic to a finite direct product of local residuated lattices.
We introduce ($\ell$-)bimonoids as ordered algebras consisting of two compatible monoidal structures on a partially ordered (lattice-ordered) set. Bimonoids form an appropriate framework for the study of a general notion of complementation, which subsumes both Boolean complements in bounded distributive lattices and multiplicative inverses in monoids. The central question of the paper is whether and how bimonoids can be embedded into complemented bimonoids, generalizing the embedding of cancellative commutative monoids into their groups of fractions and of bounded distributive lattices into th…
We characterize the existence of minimal idempotent ultrafilters (on N) in the style of reverse mathematics and higher-order reverse mathematics using the Auslander-Ellis theorem and variant thereof. We obtain that the existence of minimal idempotent ultrafilters restricted to countable algebras of sets is equivalent to the Auslander-Ellis theorem (AET) and that the existence of minimal idempotent ultrafilters as higher-order objects is $Π^1_2$-conservative over a refinement of AET.
By using nonstandard analysis, and in particular iterated hyper-extensions, we give foundations to a peculiar way of manipulating ultrafilters on the natural numbers and their pseudo-sums. The resulting formalism is suitable for applications in Ramsey theory of numbers. To illustrate the use of our technique, we give a (rather) short proof of Milliken-Taylor's Theorem, and a ultrafilter version of Rado's theorem about partition regularity of diophantine equations.
In this paper, we introduce the concept of residuated implications derived from quasi-overlap functions on lattices and prove some related properties. In addition, we formalized the residuation principle for the case of quasi-overlap functions on lattices and their respective induced implications, as well as revealing that the class of quasi-overlap functions that fulfill the residuation principle is the same class of continuous functions according to topology of Scott. Also, Scott's continuity and the notion of densely ordered posets are used to generalize a classification theorem for residua…
We introduce and study the Congruence Boolean Lifting Property (CBLP) for congruence--distributive universal algebras, as well as a property related to CBLP, which we have called $(\star )$. CBLP extends the so--called Boolean Lifting Properties (BLP) from MV--algebras, BL--algebras and residuated lattices, but differs from the BLP when particularized to bounded distributive lattices. Important classes of universal algebras, such as discriminator varieties, fulfill the CBLP. The main results of the present paper include a characterization theorem for congruence--distributive algebras with CBLP…
Hindman's Theorem says that every finite coloring of the positive natural numbers has a monochromatic set of finite sums. Ramsey algebras, recently introduced, are structures that satisfy an analogue of Hindman's Theorem. It is an open problem posed by Carlson whether every Ramsey algebra has an idempotent ultrafilter. This paper developes a general framework to study idempotent ultrafilters. Under certain countable setting, the main result roughly says that every nondegenerate Ramsey algebra has a nonprincipal idempotent ultrafilter in some nontrivial countable field of sets. This amounts to …
Motivated by a question of Di Nasso, we prove that Hindman's theorem is equivalent to the existence of idempotent types in countable complete extensions of Peano Arithmetic.
Motivated by Kalman residuated lattices, Nelson residuated lattices and Nelson paraconsistent residuated lattices, we provide a natural common generalization of them. Nelson conucleus algebras unify these examples and further extend them to the non-commutative setting. We study their structure, establish a representation theorem for them in terms of twist structures and conuclei that results in a categorical adjunction, and explore situations where the representation is actually an isomorphism. In the latter case, the adjunction is elevated to a categorical equivalence. By applying this repres…
We show a general scheme of Ramsey-type results for partitions of countable sets of finite functions, where "one piece is big" is interpreted in the language originating in creature forcing. The heart of our proofs follows Glazer's proof of the Hindman Theorem, so we prove the existence of idempotent ultrafilters with respect to suitable operation. Then we deduce partition theorems related to creature forcings.
The famous Cantor-Bernstein-Schroder theorem (CBS-theorem for short) of set theory was generalized by Sikorski and Tarski to σ-complete Boolean algebras. After this, numerous generalizations of the CBS-theorem, extending the Sikorski-Tarski version to different classes of algebras, have been established. Among these classes there are lattice ordered groups, orthomodular lattices, MV-algebras, residuated lattices, etc. This suggests to consider a common algebraic framework in which various versions of the CBS-theorem can be formulated. In this work we provide this algebraic framework establishi…
The Lifting Idempotent Property ($LIP$) of ideals in commutative rings inspired the study of Boolean lifting properties in the context of other concrete algebraic structures ($MV$-algebras, commutative l-groups, $BL$-algebras, bounded distributive lattices, residuated lattices, etc.), as well as for some types of universal algebras (C. Muresan and the author defined and studied the Congruence Boolean Lifting Property ($CBLP$) for congruence modular algebras). A lifting ideal of a ring $R$ is an ideal of $R$ fulfilling $LIP$. In a recent paper, Tarizadeh and Sharma obtained new results on liftin…
