In this paper, we develop high-order nodal discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods for hyperbolic conservation laws that satisfy invariant domain preserving properties using a subcell flux corrections and convex limiting. These methods are based on a subcell flux corrected transport (FCT) methodology that involves blending a high-order target scheme with a robust, low-order invariant domain preserving method that is obtained using a graph viscosity technique. The new low-order discretizations are based on sparse stencils which do not increase with the polynomial degree of the high-order DG method. As a result, the accuracy of the low-order method does not degrade when used with high-order target methods. The method is applied to both scalar conservation laws, for which the discrete maximum principle is naturally enforced, and to systems of conservation laws such as the Euler equations, for which positivity of density and a minimum principle for specific entropy are enforced. Numerical results are presented on a number of benchmark test cases.
A new scheme for communication between overset grids using subcells and Weighted Essentially Non Oscillatory (WENO) reconstruction for two-dimensional problems has been proposed. The effectiveness of this procedure is demonstrated using the discontinuous Galerkin method (DGM). This scheme uses WENO reconstruction using cell averages by dividing the immediate neighbors into subcells to find the degrees of freedom in cells near the overset interface. This also has the added advantage that it also works as a limiter if a discontinuity passes through the overset interface. Accuracy tests to demons…
In this paper, we generalize the compact subcell weighted essentially non oscillatory (CSWENO) limiting strategy for Runge-Kutta discontinuous Galerkin method developed recently by us in 2021 for structured meshes to unstructured triangular meshes. The main idea of the limiting strategy is to divide the immediate neighbors of a given cell into the required stencil and to use a WENO reconstruction for limiting. This strategy can be applied for any type of WENO reconstruction. We have used the WENO reconstruction proposed by Zhu and Shu in 2019 and provided accuracy tests and results for two-dim…
We present the two-dimensional unstructured grids extension of the a posteriori local subcell correction of discontinuous Galerkin (DG) schemes introduced in [52]. The technique is based on the reformulation of DG scheme as a finite volume (FV) like method through the definition of some specific numerical fluxes referred to as reconstructed fluxes. High-order DG numerical scheme combined with this new local subcell correction technique ensures positivity preservation of the solution, along with a low oscillatory and sharp shocks representation. The main idea of this correction procedure is to …
In this work, we introduce a generalization of the enriched Galerkin (EG) method. The key feature of our scheme is an adaptive two-mesh approach that, in addition to the standard enrichment of a conforming finite element discretization via discontinuous degrees of freedom, allows to subdivide selected (e.g. troubled) mesh cells in a non-conforming fashion and to use further discontinuous enrichment on this finer submesh. We prove stability and sharp a priori error estimates for a linear advection equation by using a specially tailored projection and conducting some parts of a standard converge…
High order schemes are known to be unstable in the presence of shock discontinuities or under-resolved solution features, and have traditionally required additional filtering, limiting, or artificial viscosity to avoid solution blow up. Entropy stable schemes address this instability by ensuring that physically relevant solutions satisfy a semi-discrete entropy inequality independently of discretization parameters. However, additional measures must be taken to ensure that solutions satisfy physical constraints such as positivity. In this work, we present a high order entropy stable discontinuo…

In this paper we consider a level set reinitialization technique based on a high-order, local discontinuous Galerkin method on unstructured triangular meshes. A finite volume based subcell stabilization is used to improve the nonlinear stability of the method. Instead of the standard hyperbolic level set reinitialization, the flow of time Eikonal equation is discretized to construct an approximate signed distance function. Using the Eikonal equation removes the regularization parameter in the standard approach which allows more predictable behavior and faster convergence speeds around the inte…
We present a general family of subcell limiting strategies to construct robust high-order accurate nodal discontinuous Galerkin (DG) schemes. The main strategy is to construct compatible low order finite volume (FV) type discretizations that allow for convex blending with the high-order variant with the goal of guaranteeing additional properties, such as bounds on physical quantities and/or guaranteed entropy dissipation. For an implementation of this main strategy, four main ingredients are identified that may be combined in a flexible manner: (i) a nodal high-order DG method on Legendre-Gaus…
In this paper, we present a positivity-preserving limiter for nodal Discontinuous Galerkin disctretizations of the compressible Euler equations. We use a Legendre-Gauss-Lobatto (LGL) Discontinuous Galerkin Spectral Element Method (DGSEM) and blend it locally with a consistent LGL-subcell Finite Volume (FV) discretization using a hybrid FV/DGSEM scheme that was recently proposed for entropy stable shock capturing. We show that our strategy is able to ensure robust simulations with positive density and pressure when using the standard and the split-form DGSEM. Furthermore, we show the applicabil…
Discontinuous Galerkin schemes for hyperbolic systems in non-conservative variables: quasi-conservative formulation with subcell finite volume corrections
This work extends the concepts of algebraic flux correction and convex limiting to continuous high-order Bernstein finite element discretizations of scalar hyperbolic problems. Using an array of adjustable diffusive fluxes, the standard Galerkin approximation is transformed into a nonlinear high-resolution scheme which has the compact sparsity pattern of the piecewise-linear or multilinear subcell discretization. The representation of this scheme in terms of invariant domain preserving states makes it possible to prove the validity of local discrete maximum principles under CFL-like conditions…

A new hybrid mixed discontinuous Galerkin finite element (HMDGFE) method is constructed for incompressible miscible displacement problem. In this method, the hybrid mixed finite element (HMFE) procedure is considered to solve pressure and velocity equations, and a new hybrid mixed discontinuous Galerkin procedure is constructed to solve the concentration equation with upwind technique. Compared with other traditional discontinuous Galerkin methods, the new method can reach global systems with less unknowns and sparser stencils. The consistency and conservation of the method are analyzed, the s…
Existing a priori convergence results of the discontinuous Petrov-Galerkin method to solve the problem of linear elasticity are improved. Using duality arguments, we show that higher convergence rates for the displacement can be obtained. Post-processing techniques are introduced in order to prove superconvergence and numerical experiments {\color{black} confirm} our theory.
A discontinuous Galerkin pressure correction numerical method for solving the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations is formulated and analyzed. We prove unconditional stability of the propose scheme. Convergence of the discrete velocity is established by deriving a priori error estimates. Numerical results verify the convergence rates.
In this paper, discontinuous Galerkin finite element methods are applied to one dimensional Rosenau equation. Theoretical results including consistency, a priori bounds and optimal error estimates are established for both semidiscrete and fully discrete schemes. Numerical experiments are performed to validate the theoretical results. The decay estimates are verified numerically for the Rosenau equation.
In this paper we propose a novel regularization strategy for the local discontinuous Galerkin method to solve the Hamilton-Jacobi equation in the context of level-set reinitialization. The novel regularization idea works in analogy to shock-capturing schemes for discontinuous Galerkin methods, which are based on finite volume sub-cells. In this spirit, the local discontinuous Galerkin method is combined with an upwind/downwind finite volume sub-cell discretization, which is applied in areas of low regularity. To ensure the applicability on unstructured meshes, the finite volume discretization …
We present a geometric multigrid solver for the Compact Discontinuous Galerkin method through building a hierarchy of coarser meshes using a simple agglomeration method which handles arbitrary element shapes and dimensions. The method is easily extendable to other discontinuous Galerkin discretizations, including the Local DG method and the Interior Penalty method. We demonstrate excellent solver performance for Poisson's equation, provided a flux formulation is used for the operator coarsening and a suitable switch function chosen for the numerical fluxes.
In this paper, we provide a framework of designing the local discontinuous Galerkin scheme for integral fractional Laplacian $(-Δ)^{s}$ with $s\in(0,1)$ in two dimensions. We theoretically prove and numerically verify the numerical stability and convergence of the scheme with the convergence rate no worse than $\mathcal{O}(h^{k+\frac{1}{2}})$.
This paper is devoted to the numerical analysis of a piecewise constant discontinuous Galerkin method for time fractional subdiffusion problems. The regularity of weak solution is firstly established by using variational approach and Mittag-Leffler function. Then several optimal error estimates are derived with low regularity data. Finally, numerical experiments are conducted to verify the theoretical results.
The pressure correction scheme is combined with interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin method to solve the time-dependent Navier-Stokes equations. Optimal error estimates are derived for the velocity in the L$^2$ norm in time and in space. Error bounds for the discrete time derivative of the velocity and for the pressure are also established.
The hybrid Raviart-Thomas mixed discontinuous Galerkin (HRTMDG) method is proposed for solving the Helmholtz equation. With a new energy norm, we establish the existence and uniqueness of the HRTMDG method, and give its convergence analysis. The corresponding error estimate shows that the HRTMDG method has an optimal $L^2$-norm convergence accuracy which is independent of wavenumber.
We devise and analyze a class of interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin methods for nonlinear and nonsmooth variational problems. Discrete duality relations are derived that lead to optimal error estimates in the case of total-variation regularized minimization or obstacle problems. The analysis provides explicit estimates that precisely determine the role of stabilization parameters. Numerical experiments suppport the optimality of the estimates.
We generalize the energy-based discontinuous Galerkin method proposed in [SIAM J. Num. Anal., 53(6):2705-2726, 2015.] to second-order semilinear wave equations. A stability and convergence analysis is presented along with numerical experiments demonstrating optimal convergence for certain choices of the interelement fluxes. Applications to the sine-Gordon equation include simulations of breathers, kink, and anti-kink solitons.
For the stationary advection-diffusion problem the standard continuous Galerkin method is unstable without some additional control on the mesh or method. The interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin method is stable but at the expense of an increased number of degrees of freedom. The hybrid method proposed in [5] combines the computational complexity of the continuous method with the stability of the discontinuous method without a significant increase in degrees of freedom. We discuss the implementation of this method using the finite element library deal.ii and present some numerical experimen…
We present a strongly conservative and pressure-robust hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin method for the coupled time-dependent Navier-Stokes and Darcy problem. We show existence and uniqueness of a solution and present an optimal a priori error analysis for the fully discrete problem when using Backward Euler time stepping. The theoretical results are verified by numerical examples.
In this paper, we investigate a Local Discontinuous Galerkin (LDG) approximation for systems with balanced Orlicz-structure. We propose a new numerical flux, which yields optimal convergence rates for linear ansatz functions. In particular, our approach yields a unified treatment for problems with $(p,δ)$-structure for arbitrary $p \in (1,\infty)$ and $δ\ge 0$.
We introduce a homogeneous multigrid method in the sense that it uses the same embedded discontinuous Galerkin (EDG) discretization scheme for Poisson's equation on all levels. In particular, we use the injection operator developed in [LuRK2020] for HDG and prove optimal convergence of the method under the assumption of elliptic regularity. Numerical experiments underline our analytical findings.
The mixed form of the Cahn-Hilliard equations is discretized by the hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin method. For any chemical energy density, existence and uniqueness of the numerical solution is obtained. The scheme is proved to be unconditionally stable. Convergence of the method is obtained by deriving a priori error estimates that are valid for the Ginzburg-Lindau chemical energy density and for convex domains. The paper also contains discrete functional tools, namely discrete Agmon and Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequalities, which are proved to be valid in the hybridizable discontinuous Gale…
In this work, we propose and investigate stable high-order collocation-type discretisations of the discontinuous Galerkin method on equidistant and scattered collocation points. We do so by incorporating the concept of discrete least squares into the discontinuous Galerkin framework. Discrete least squares approximations allow us to construct stable and high-order accurate approximations on arbitrary collocation points, while discrete least squares quadrature rules allow us their stable and exact numerical integration. Both methods are computed efficiently by using bases of discrete orthogonal…
A discontinuous Galerkin (DG) scheme for solving semilinear elliptic problem is developed and analyzed in this paper. The DG finite element discretizations are established, and the corresponding existence and uniqueness theorem is proved by using Brouwer's fixed point method. Some optimal priori error estimates under both DG norm and $L^2$ norm are presented. Numerical results are also shown to confirm the efficiency of the proposed approach.
The second paper of this series presents two robust entropy stable shock-capturing methods for discontinuous Galerkin spectral element (DGSEM) discretizations of the compressible magneto-hydrodynamics (MHD) equations. Specifically, we use the resistive GLM-MHD equations, which include a divergence cleaning mechanism that is based on a generalized Lagrange multiplier (GLM). For the continuous entropy analysis to hold, and due to the divergence-free constraint on the magnetic field, the GLM-MHD system requires the use of non-conservative terms, which need special treatment. In this paper, a discontinuous Galerkin finite element method of Nitsche's version for the Steklov eigenvalue problem in linear elasticity is presented. The a priori error estimates are analyzed under a low regularity condition, and the robustness with respect to nearly incompressible materials (locking-free) is proven. Furthermore, some numerical experiments are reported to show the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed method.
We present a computational model of thin elastic bilayers that undergo large bending isometric deformations when actuated by non-mechanical stimuli. We propose a discontinuous Galerkin approximation of the variational formulation discussed in Bartels et al. (2018). We showcase its advantages and good computational performance with configurations of interest in both engineering and medicine and either Dirichlet or free boundary conditions.
In this paper, we study the convergence of adaptive mixed interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin method for H(curl)-elliptic problems. We first get the mixed model of H(curl)-elliptic problem by introducing a new intermediate variable. Then we discuss the continuous variational problem and discrete variational problem, which based on interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin approximation. Next, we construct the corresponding posteriori error indicator, and prove the contraction of the summation of the energy error and the scaled error indicator. At last, we confirm and illustrate the theoretic…
This paper proposes and analyzes a fully discrete scheme that discretizes space with an ultra-weak local discontinuous Galerkin scheme and time with the Crank--Nicolson method for the nonlinear biharmonic Schrödinger equation. We first rewrite the problem into a system with a second-order spatial derivative and then apply the ultra-weak discontinuous Galerkin method to the system. The proposed scheme is more computationally efficient compared with the local discontinuous Galerkin method because of fewer auxiliary variables, and unconditionally stable without any penalty terms; it also preserve…
