In this paper, we present a positivity-preserving limiter for nodal Discontinuous Galerkin disctretizations of the compressible Euler equations. We use a Legendre-Gauss-Lobatto (LGL) Discontinuous Galerkin Spectral Element Method (DGSEM) and blend it locally with a consistent LGL-subcell Finite Volume (FV) discretization using a hybrid FV/DGSEM scheme that was recently proposed for entropy stable shock capturing. We show that our strategy is able to ensure robust simulations with positive density and pressure when using the standard and the split-form DGSEM. Furthermore, we show the applicability of our FV positivity limiter in extremely under-resolved vortex dominated simulations and in problems with shocks.

The second paper of this series presents two robust entropy stable shock-capturing methods for discontinuous Galerkin spectral element (DGSEM) discretizations of the compressible magneto-hydrodynamics (MHD) equations. Specifically, we use the resistive GLM-MHD equations, which include a divergence cleaning mechanism that is based on a generalized Lagrange multiplier (GLM). For the continuous entropy analysis to hold, and due to the divergence-free constraint on the magnetic field, the GLM-MHD system requires the use of non-conservative terms, which need special treatment. In this work, we consider the general family of the so called ADER PNPM schemes for the numerical solution of hyperbolic partial differential equations with \textit{arbitrary} high order of accuracy in space and time. The family of one-step PNPM schemes was introduced in [Dumbser et al., JCP, 2008] and represents a unified framework for classical high order Finite Volume (FV) schemes (N=0), the usual Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods (N=M), as well as a new class of intermediate hybrid schemes for which a reconstruction operator of degree M is applied over piecewise polynomial data of degree…
A new scheme for communication between overset grids using subcells and Weighted Essentially Non Oscillatory (WENO) reconstruction for two-dimensional problems has been proposed. The effectiveness of this procedure is demonstrated using the discontinuous Galerkin method (DGM). This scheme uses WENO reconstruction using cell averages by dividing the immediate neighbors into subcells to find the degrees of freedom in cells near the overset interface. This also has the added advantage that it also works as a limiter if a discontinuity passes through the overset interface. Accuracy tests to demons…
High-order discontinuous Galerkin schemes with subcell finite volume limiter and adaptive mesh refinement for a monolithic first-order BSSNOK formulation of the Einstein-Euler equations
We extend the monolithic convex limiting (MCL) methodology to nodal discontinuous Galerkin spectral element methods (DGSEM). The use of Legendre-Gauss-Lobatto (LGL) quadrature endows collocated DGSEM space discretizations of nonlinear hyperbolic problems with properties that greatly simplify the design of invariant domain preserving high-resolution schemes. Compared to many other continuous and discontinuous Galerkin method variants, a particular advantage of the LGL spectral operator is the availability of a natural decomposition into a compatible subcell flux discretization. Representing a h…
This work concerns the numerical approximation of a multicomponent compressible Euler system for a fluid mixture in multiple space dimensions on unstructured meshes with a high-order discontinuous Galerkin spectral element method (DGSEM). We first derive an entropy stable (ES) and robust (i.e., that preserves the positivity of the partial densities and internal energy) three-point finite volume scheme using relaxation-based approximate Riemann solvers from Bouchut [Nonlinear stability of finite volume methods for hyperbolic conservation laws and well-balanced schemes for sources, Birkhauser] a…

Discontinuous Galerkin schemes for hyperbolic systems in non-conservative variables: quasi-conservative formulation with subcell finite volume corrections
In this work, we discuss and develop multidimensional limiting techniques for discontinuous Galerkin (DG) discretizations of scalar hyperbolic problems. To ensure that each cell average satisfies a local discrete maximum principle (DMP), we impose inequality constraints on the local Lax-Friedrichs fluxes of a piecewise-linear (P1) approximation. Since the piecewise-constant (P0) version corresponds to a property-preserving low-order finite volume method, the validity of DMP conditions can always be enforced using slope and/or flux limiters. We show that the (currently rather uncommon) use of d…
In this work we present a framework for enforcing discrete maximum principles in discontinuous Galerkin (DG) discretizations. The developed schemes are applicable to scalar conservation laws as well as hyperbolic systems. Our methodology for limiting volume terms is similar to recently proposed methods for continuous Galerkin approximations, while DG flux terms require novel stabilization techniques. Piecewise Bernstein polynomials are employed as shape functions for the DG spaces, thus facilitating the use of very high order spatial approximations. We discuss the design of a new, provably inv…
