The Maxwell field can be viewed as a $U(1)$-gauge theory, therefore, generalizing it to form-invariance in dynamical spacetime backgrounds should take this symmetry into account. This is of essential importance when generalizations of general relativity to theories with non-vanishing torsion are considered. Despite the many statements in literature that a $U(1)$-gauge field cannot couple to torsion, this issue was recently revived. In this letter we contribute to the discussion by demonstrating via a canonical transformation within the framework of the DeDonder-Weyl Hamiltonian formalism that a $U(1)$-gauge field does not couple to torsion.
We study the system of self-dual Maxwell field coupled to 3D gravity with torsion, with Maxwell field modified by a topological mass term. General structure of the field equations reveals a new, dynamical role of the classical central charges, and gives a simple correspondence between self-dual solutions with torsion and their Riemannian counterparts. We construct two exact self-dual solutions, corresponding to the sectors with massless and massive Maxwell field, and calculate their conserved charges.
A system of field equations for an Einstein-Maxwell model with $RF^2$-type nonminimal coupling in a non-Riemannian space-time with a non-vanishing torsion is derived and the resulting field equations are expressed in terms of the Riemannian quantities based on a metric with a Lorentzian signature. The torsion is generated by the gradients of the electromagnetic field invariants. An electromagnetic constitutive tensor is introduced in the formulation of the field equations.
We consider a possible (parity conserving) interaction between the electromagnetic field $F$ and a torsion field $T^α$ of spacetime. For generic elementary torsion, gauge invariant coupling terms of lowest order fall into two classes that are both nonminimal and {\it quadratic} in torsion. These two classes are displayed explicitly. The first class of the type $\sim F T^2$ yields (undesirable) modifications of the Maxwell equations. The second class of the type $\sim F^2 T^2$ doesn't touch the Maxwell equations but rather modifies the constitutive tensor of spacetime. Such a modification can b…
It has been known for a long time that the presence of torsion is in conflict with gauge invariance of the the electromagnetic field in curved Riemann-Cartan space if the Maxwell field is minimally coupled to the curved gravitational space through the covariant derivative. In search for a possible solution, we consider in this note the system of Maxwell-Dirac electrodynamics in Riemann-Cartan space. Through investigating consistency of the field equations, and taking cue from the scale invariance properties of the system, we come up with a solution that satisfies gauge invariance without havin…
We address the implementation of the cosmological principle, that is, the assumption of homogeneity and isotropy in the spatial distribution of matter in the Universe, within the context of Einstein-Cartan theory including minimal couplings of both Dirac and Maxwell fields to torsion. This theory gives rise to new physical effects in environments of high spin densities while leaving the vacuum dynamics unaffected. Our approach is to impose the cosmological principle from the onset to the geometrical degrees of freedom (metric and torsion functions), which constrains the torsion components and …
We propose a generalizing gauge-invariant model of propagating torsion which couples to the Maxwell field and to charged particles. As a result we have an Abelian gauge invariant action which leads to a theory with nonzero torsion and which is consistent with available experimental data.
It is shown that in static and spherically symmetric configurations of the system of Maxwell field coupled to 3D gravity with torsion, at least one of the Maxwell field components has to vanish. Restricting our attention to the electric sector of the theory, we find an interesting exact solution, corresponding to the azimuthal electric field. Its geometric structure is to a large extent influenced by the values of two different central charges, associated to the asymptotic AdS structure of spacetime.
The form of Maxwell's theory is well known in the framework of general relativity, a fact that is related to the applicability of the principle of equivalence to electromagnetic phenomena. We pose the question whether this form changes if torsion and/or nonmetricity fields are allowed for in spacetime. Starting from the conservation laws of electric charge and magnetic flux, we recognize that the Maxwell equations themselves remain the same, but the constitutive law must depend on the metric and, additionally, may depend on quantities related to torsion and/or nonmetricity. We illustrate our r…
We consider the Lagrangian density for a free Maxwell field, in which the electromagnetic field tensor minimally couples to the affine connection, in the Einstein-Cartan-Sciama-Kibble theory of gravity. We derive the formulae for the torsion and electromagnetic field tensors in terms of the electromagnetic potential. The divergence of the magnetic field does not vanish: the photon-torsion coupling acts like an effective magnetic monopole density. Such a coupling, which breaks U(1) gauge invariance, is significant only at extremely high energies existing in the very early Universe or inside bla…
A modification of Kaluza-Klein theory is proposed in which, as a result of a symmetry breaking, five-dimensional space-time is partially parallelized implying the appearance of torsion fields. A naturally chosen action functional leads to the Einstein-Cartan-Maxwell theory where the electromagnetic field strength is represented by the fifth component of the torsion 2-form. Incorporation of a scalar field reveals that four-dimensional space-time torsion is not induced by the scalar field.
While one can in principle augment gravity theory with torsion, it is generally thought that any such torsion affects would be too small to be of consequence. Here we show that this cannot in general be the case. We show that the limit of vanishing torsion is not necessarily a continuous one, with the theory obtained in the limit not necessarily coinciding with the theory in which torsion had never been present at all. However, for a standard torsion tensor that is antisymmetric in two of its indices we have found two cases in which the vanishing torsion limit is in fact continuous, namely Ein…

The canonical approach to black hole entropy in Poincaré gauge theory without matter is extended to include Maxwell field as a matter source. The new formalism is used to calculate asymptotic charges and entropy of Kerr--Newmann--AdS black holes with torsion. The result implies that the first law, with a nontrivial contribution of the Maxwell field, takes the same form as in general relativity.
An exact solution of Einstein-Cartan-Maxwell (ECM) field equations representing a charged domain wall given by the jump on the electric charge and spin density across the wall is obtained from the Riemannian theory of distributions. The Gauss-Coddazzi equations are used to show that spin, charge and Cartan torsion increases the repulsive character of the domain wall. Taub and Vilenkin walls are discussed as well as their relations to wormhole geometry. The electric and torsion fields are constants at the wall.
In this paper we present a torsional non-relativistic Chern-Simons teleparallel (super)gravity theory in three spacetime dimensions. We start by developing the non-relativistic limit of the purely bosonic relativistic teleparallel Chern-Simons formulation of gravity. On-shell the latter yields a non-Riemannian setup with non-vanishing torsion, which, at non-relativistic level, translates into a non-vanishing spatial torsion sourced by the cosmological constant. Then we consider the three-dimensional relativistic $\mathcal{N}=2$ Chern-Simons supergravity theory and obtain its non-relativistic c…
A non-minimal coupling of Weyl curvatures to electromagnetic fields is considered in Brans-Dicke-Maxwell theory. The gravitational field equations are formulated in a Riemannian spacetime where the spacetime torsion is constrained to zero by the method of Lagrange multipliers in the language of exterior differential forms. The significance and ramifications of non-minimal couplings to gravity are examined in a pp-wave spacetime.
We investigate the hidden symmetries of the Kerr-Newman, of the D=5 minimal gauged supergravity which admits a Killing-Maxwell system in the sense of Carter and of higher dimensional spacetimes in the presence of Killing-Yano torsion. We note that when an electromagnetic tensor is present and an associated Killing-Maxwell system can be constructed in the sense of Carter, the Killing- Maxwell field becomes a PCKY (primary conformal Killing-Yano) tensor or a PGCKY (primary generalized conformal Killing-Yano) tensor, the latter in the presence of torsion. We point out the structure of the Dirac-t…
It is found that conformally coupled induced gravity with gradient torsion gives a dilaton gravity in Riemann geometry. In the Einstein frame of the dilaton gravity the conformal symmetry is hidden and a non-vanishing cosmological constant is not plausible due to the constraint of the conformal coupling.
Spacetimes with everywhere vanishing curvature tensor, but with torsion different from zero only on world sheets that represent closed loops in ordinary space are presented, also defects along open curves with end points at infinity are studied. The case of defects along timelike loops is also considered and the geodesics in these spaces are briefly discussed.
We obtain a full characterization of Einstein-Maxwell $p$-form solutions $(\boldsymbol{g},\boldsymbol{F})$ in $D$-dimensions for which all higher-order corrections vanish identically. These thus simultaneously solve a large class of Lagrangian theories including both modified gravities and (possibly non-minimally coupled) modified electrodynamics. Specifically, both $\boldsymbol{g}$ and $\boldsymbol{F}$ are fields with vanishing scalar invariants and further satisfy two simple tensorial conditions. They describe a family of gravitational and electromagnetic plane-fronted waves of the Kundt cla…
Einstein-Cartan theory is an extension of the standard formulation of General Relativity characterized by a non-vanishing torsion. The latter is sourced by the matter fields via the spin tensor, and its effects are expected to be important at very high spin densities. In this work we analyze in detail the physics of Einstein-Cartan theory with Dirac and Maxwell fields minimally coupled to the spacetime torsion. This breaks the $U(1)$ gauge symmetry, which is suggested by the possibility of a torsion-induced phase transition in the early Universe. The resulting Dirac-like and Maxwell-like equat…
Issuing from a geometry with nonmetricity and torsion we build up a classical theory of gravitation and electromagnetism. The theory is coordinate covariant as well Weyl-gauge covariant. Massless and massive photons, intrinsic electr. and magn. currents exist in this framework. The field EQ-s and EQ-s of motion are derived from a geometrically based action. It is shown that the magn.-magn. interaction is transmitted by massive photons. A magn. charge (monopole) cannot be located together with an electr. one. In absence of torsion and in the Einstein gauge one obtains the Einstein-Maxwell theor…
In this work we take into consideration a generalization of Gauge Theories based on the analysis of the structural characteristics of Maxwell theory, which can be considered as the prototype of such kind of theories (Maxwell-like). Such class of theories is based on few principles related to different orders of commutators between covariant derivatives. Their physical meaning is very simple, and lies in stating that the local transformations of a suitable substratum (the space-time or a particular phase space) and the imposed constraints define a "compensative mechanism" or the "interaction" w…
The system of Einstein-Maxwell equations for fields mentioned in the title is simplified. Known pure radiation solutions are systematized and new solutions are given by separating the variables.
We prove uniqueness of static, asymptotically flat spacetimes with non-degenerate black holes for three special cases of Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory: For the coupling ``$α= 1$'' (which is the low energy limit of string theory) on the one hand, and for vanishing magnetic or vanishing electric field (but arbitrary coupling) on the other hand. Our work generalizes in a natural, but non-trivial way the uniqueness result obtained by Masood-ul-Alam who requires both $α= 1$ and absence of magnetic fields, as well as relations between the mass and the charges. Moreover, we simplify Masood-ul-Alam'…
It is shown that in all odd dimensional Chern-Simons theories states in which the torsion is non zero (but it can approach smoothly to zero outside suitable regions) do exist. Some possible observational effects related to neutrino oscillations are pointed out. In the theory of continuum media (in which suitable defects can be described by localized non vanishing torsion) "the gravitational intuition" is a rather useful tool to describe the physical effects of such defects. A possible astrophysical application is shortly described.
We study massless Duffin-Kemmer-Petiau (DKP) fields in the context of Einstein-Cartan gravitation theory, interacting via minimal coupling procedure. In the case of an identically vanishing torsion (Riemannian space-times) we show that there exists local gauge symmetries which reproduce the usual gauge symmetries for the massless scalar and electromagnetic fields. On the other hand, similarly to what happens with the Maxwell theory, a non-vanishing torsion, in general, breaks the usual U(1) local gauge symmetry of the electromagnetic field or, in a different point of view, impose conditions on…
We present a novel, exact, traversable wormhole (T-WH) solution for $(3+1)$-dimensional Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet theory (EsGB) coupled to a power-Maxwell nonlinear electrodynamics (NLED). The solution is characterized by two parameters, $\mathcal{Q}\!_{\rm e}$ and $\mathcal{Q}\!_{_{ \mathcal{S} }}$, associated respectively with the electromagnetic field and the scalar field. We show that for $\mathcal{Q}^2_{\rm e} - \mathcal{Q}\!_{_{ \mathcal{S} }}>0$ the solution can be interpreted as a traversable wormhole. In the general case, with non-vanishing electromagnetic field, the scalar-Gauss-B…
Inspired by the Maxwell symmetry generalization of general relativity (Maxwell gravity), we have constructed the Maxwell extension of $f(R)$ gravity. We found that the semi-simple extension of the Poincare symmetry allows us to introduce geometrically a cosmological constant term in four-dimensional $f(R)$ gravity. This symmetry also allows the introduction of a non-vanishing torsion to the Maxwell $f(R)$ theory. It is found that the antisymmetric gauge field $B^{ab}$ associated with Maxwell extension is considered as a source of the torsion. It is also found that the gravitational equation of…
We show that the necessary and sufficient condition for erecting locally inertial coordinates at a point $p$ of a $U^4$-space, and therefore assuring the validity of the equivalence principle at that point, is the vanishing at $p$ of the symmetric part of the contortion tensor. This fact does not demand a vanishing torsion, but only a totally antisymmetric one. As an application, we derive the geodesic deviation equation; and prove the compatibility with the Newtonian limit.
We present a gauge theory of the conformal group in four spacetime dimensions with a non-vanishing torsion. In particular, we allow for a completely antisymmetric torsion, equivalent by Hodge duality to an axial vector whose presence does not spoil the conformal invariance of the theory, in contrast with claims of antecedent literature. The requirement of conformal invariance implies a differential condition (in particular, a Killing equation) on the aforementioned axial vector which leads to a Maxwell-like equation in a four-dimensional curved background. We also give some preliminary results…
We consider a (non--Riemannian) metric--affine gravity theory, in particular its nonmetricity--torsion sector ``isomorphic'' to the Einstein--Maxwell theory. We map certain Einstein--Maxwell electrovacuum solutions to it, namely the Plebański--Demiański class of Petrov type D metrics.
Five dimensional Chern-Simons theory with (anti-)de Sitter SO(1,5) or SO(2,4) gauge invariance presents an alternative to General Relativity with cosmological constant. We consider the zero-modes of its Kaluza-Klein compactification to four dimensions. Solutions with vanishing torsion are obtained in the cases of a spherically symmetric 3-space and of a homogeneous and isotropic 3-space, which reproduce the Schwarzshild-de Sitter and $Λ$CDM cosmological solutions of General Relativity. We also check that vanishing torsion is a stable feature of the solutions.
In this work we present a generalized Brans-Dicke lagrangian including a non-minimally coupled Gauss-Bonnet term without imposing the vanishing torsion condition. In the resulting field equations, the torsion is closely related to the dynamics of the scalar field, i.e., if non-minimally coupled terms are present in the theory, then the torsion must be present. For the studied lagrangian we analyze the cosmological consequences of an effective torsional fluid and we show that this fluid can be responsible for the current acceleration of the universe. Finally, we perform a detailed dynamical sys…
In the framework of the teleparallel equivalent of general relativity, we study the dynamics of a gravitationally coupled electromagnetic field. It is shown that the electromagnetic field is able not only to couple to torsion, but also, through its energy-momentum tensor, to produce torsion. Furthermore, it is shown that the coupling of the electromagnetic field with torsion preserves the local gauge invariance of Maxwell's theory.
In this work we present a gauge-invariant three-dimensional teleparallel supergravity theory using the Chern-Simons formalism. The present construction is based on a supersymmetric extension of a particular deformation of the Poincaré algebra. At the bosonic level the theory describes a non-Riemannian geometry with a non-vanishing torsion. In presence of supersymmetry, the teleparallel supergravity theory is characterized by a non-vanishing super-torsion in which the cosmological constant can be seen as a source for the torsion. We show that the teleparallel supergravity theory presented here …
We show that it is possible to formulate the classical Einstein-Maxwell-Dirac theory of spinors interacting with the gravitational and electromagnetic fields as the Einstein-Cartan-Kibble-Sciama theory with the Ricci scalar of the traceless torsion, describing gravity, and the torsion trace acting as the electromagnetic potential.
Motivated by the analogy between a weak field expansion of general relativity and Maxwell's laws of electrodynamics, we explore physical consequences of a parity violating $θ$ term in gravitoelectromagnetism. This is distinct from the common gravitational $θ$ term formed as a square of the Riemann tensor. Instead it appears as a product of the gravitoelectric and gravitomagnetic fields in the Lagrangian, similar to the Maxwellian $θ$ term. We show that this sector can arise from a quadratic torsion term in nonlinear gravity. In analogy to the physics of topological insulators, the torsion-indu…
Electrostatics on global Anti-de-Sitter (AdS) spacetime is sharply different from that on global Minkowski spacetime. It admits a multipolar expansion with everywhere regular, finite energy solutions, for every multipole moment except the monopole (arXiv:1507.04370). A similar statement holds for global AdS magnetostatics. We show that everywhere regular, finite energy, electric plus magnetic fields exist on AdS in three distinct classes: $(I)$ with non-vanishing total angular momentum $J$; $(II)$ with vanishing $J$ but non-zero angular momentum density, $T^t_φ$; $(III)$ with vanishing $J$ and…
We investigate the solutions of black holes in $f(T)$ gravity with nonlinear power-law Maxwell field, where $T$ is the torsion scalar in teleparalelism. In particular, we introduce the Langranian with diverse dimensions in which the quadratic polynomial form of $f(T)$ couples with the nonlinear power-law Maxwell field. We explore the leverage of the nonlinear electrodynamics on the space-time behavior. It is found that these new black hole solutions tend towards those in general relativity without any limit. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that the singularity of the curvature invariant and th…
In this work we investigate analytic static and spherically symmetric solutions of a generalized theory of gravity in the Einstein-Cartan formalism. The main goal consists in analyzing the behavior of the solutions under the influence of a quadratic curvature term in the presence of cosmological constant and no torsion. In the first incursion we found an exact de Sitter-like solution. This solution is obtained by imposing vanishing torsion in the field equations. On the other hand, by imposing vanishing torsion directly in the action, we are able to find a perturbative solution around the Schw…
We study the three-dimensional gravity with torsion given by the Mielke-Baekler (MB) model coupled to gravitational Chern-Simons term, and that possess electric charge described by Maxwell-Chern-Simons electrodynamics. We find and discuss this theory's charged black holes solutions and uncharged solutions. We find that for vanishing torsion our solutions by means of a coordinate transformation can be written as three-dimensional Chern-Simons black holes. We also discuss a special case of this theory, Topologically Massive Gravity (TMG) at chiral point, and we show that the logarithmic solution…
Stationary black holes in 5-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory possess surprising properties. When considering the Chern-Simons coefficient $λ$ as a parameter, two critical values of $λ$ appear: the supergravity value $λ_{\rm SG}=1$, and the value $λ=2$. At $λ=1$, supersymmetric black holes with vanishing horizon angular velocity, but finite angular momentum exist. As $λ$ increases beyond $λ_{\rm SG}$ a rotational instability arises, and counterrotating black holes appear, whose horizon rotates in the opposite sense to the angular momentum. Thus supersymmetry is associated with t…
We perform a systematic study of the Maxwell quasinormal spectrum in a mirror-like cavity following the generic Robin type vanishing energy flux principle, by starting with the Schwarzschild black holes in this paper. It is shown that, for black holes in a cavity, the vanishing energy flux principle leads to \textit{two} different sets of boundary conditions. By solving the Maxwell equations with these two boundary conditions both analytically and numerically, we observe \textit{two} distinct sets of modes. This indicates that the vanishing energy flux principle may be applied not only to asym…
We study the field equations of extensions of General Relativity formulated within a metric-affine formalism setting torsion to zero (Palatini approach). We find that different (second-order) dynamical equations arise depending on whether torsion is set to zero i) a priori or ii) a posteriori, i.e., before or after considering variations of the action. Considering a generic family of Ricci-squared theories, we show that in both cases the connection can be decomposed as the sum of a Levi-Civita connection and terms depending on a vector field. However, while in case i) this vector field is rela…
We derive exact brane solutions of minimally coupled Einstein-Maxwell-scalar gravity in d+2 dimensions with a vanishing scalar potential. The solutions are conformal to the Lifshitz spacetime and have several properties, which make them interesting for holographic applications. In particular, the dual QFT is characterized by hyperscaling violation. We show that our solutions, together with the AdS brane and the domain wall sourced by an exponential potential, give the complete list of scalar branes sourced by a generic potential having simple (scale-covariant) scaling symmetries. This allows u…
The Geroch-Held-Penrose formalism is used to re-analyse algebraically special non-null Einstein-Maxwell fields, aligned as well as non-aligned, in the presence of a possible non-vanishing cosmological constant. A new invariant characterisation is given of the Garcia-Plebanski and Plebanski-Hacyan metrics within the family of aligned solutions and of the Griffiths metrics within the family of the non-aligned solutions. As a corollary also the double alignment of the Debever-McLenaghan 'class D' metrics with non-vanishing cosmological constant is shown to be equivalent with the shear-free and ge…
Perturbations of asymptotically Anti-de-Sitter (AdS) spacetimes are often considered by imposing field vanishing boundary conditions (BCs) at the AdS boundary. Such BCs, of Dirichlet-type, imply a vanishing energy flux at the boundary, but the converse is, generically, not true. Regarding AdS as a gravitational box, we consider vanishing energy flux (VEF) BCs as a more fundamental physical requirement and we show that these BCs can lead to a new branch of modes. As a concrete example, we consider Maxwell perturbations on Kerr-AdS black holes in the Teukolsky formalism, but our formulation appl…
A linear Lorentz connection has always two fundamental derived characteristics: curvature and torsion. The latter is assumed to vanish in general relativity. Three gravitational models involving non-vanishing torsion are examined: teleparallel gravity, Einstein-Cartan, and new general relativity. Their dependability is critically examined. Although a final answer can only be given by experience, it is argued that teleparallel gravity provides the most consistent approach.
We determine the class of $p$-forms $F$ which possess vanishing scalar invariants (VSI) at arbitrary order in a $n$-dimensional spacetime. Namely, we prove that $F$ is VSI if and only if it is of type N, its multiple null direction $l$ is "degenerate Kundt", and $\nabla_{l}F=0$. The result is theory-independent. Next, we discuss the special case of Maxwell fields, both at the level of test fields and of the full Einstein-Maxwell equations. These describe electromagnetic non-expanding waves propagating in various Kundt spacetimes. We further point out that a subset of these solutions possesses …
In this paper we present an alternative cosmological extension of the three-dimensional extended Newtonian Chern-Simons gravity by switching on the torsion. The theory is obtained as a non-relativistic limit of an enhancement and $U(1)$-enlargement of the so-called teleparallel algebra and can be seen as the teleparallel analogue of the Newtonian gravity theory. The infinite-dimensional extension of our result is also explored through the Lie algebra expansion method. An infinite-dimensional torsional Galilean gravity model is presented which in the vanishing cosmological constant limit reprod…
We extract exact charged black-hole solutions with flat transverse sections in the framework of D-dimensional Maxwell-f(T) gravity, and we analyze the singularities and horizons based on both torsion and curvature invariants. Interestingly enough, we find that in some particular solution subclasses there appear more singularities in the curvature scalars than in the torsion ones. This difference disappears in the uncharged case, or in the case where f(T) gravity becomes the usual linear-in-T teleparallel gravity, that is General Relativity. Curvature and torsion invariants behave very differen…
Inflation in the framework of Einstein-Cartan theory is revisited. Einstein-Cartan theory is a natural extension of the General Relativity, with non-vanishing torsion. The connection on Riemann-Cartan spacetime is only compatible with the cosmological principal for a particular form of torsion. We show this form to also be compatible with gauge invariance principle for a non-Abelian and Abelian gauge fields under a certain deviced minimal coupling procedure. We adopt an Abelian gauge field in the form of "cosmic triad". The dynamical field equations are obtained and shown to sustain cosmic inf…
The investigation on higher-dimensional AdS black holes is of great importance under the light of AdS/CFT correspondence. In this work we study static and rotating, uncharged and charged, AdS black holes in higher-dimensional $f(T)$ gravity, focusing on the power-law ansatz which is the most viable according to observations. We extract AdS solutions characterized by an effective cosmological constant that depends on the parameters of the $f(T)$ modification, as well as on the electric charge, even if the explicit cosmological constant is absent. These solutions do not have a general relativity…
In conventional Maxwell--Lorentz electrodynamics, the propagation of light is influenced by the metric, not, however, by the possible presence of a torsion T. Still the light can feel torsion if the latter is coupled nonminimally to the electromagnetic field F by means of a supplementary Lagrangian of the type l^2 T^2 F^2 (l = coupling constant). Recently Preuss suggested a specific nonminimal term of this nature. We evaluate the spacetime relation of Preuss in the background of a general O(3)-symmetric torsion field and prove by specifying the optical metric of spacetime that this can yield b…
The present paper analyses the Einstein-Cartan theory of gravitation with Elko spinors as sources of curvature and torsion. After minimally coupling the Elko spinors to torsion, the spin angular momentum tensor is derived and its structure is discussed. It shows a much richer structure than the Dirac analogue and hence it is demonstrated that spin one half particles do not necessarily yield only an axial vector torsion component. Moreover, it is argued that the presence of Elko spinors partially solves the problem of minimally coupling Maxwell fields to Einstein-Cartan theory.
In this paper, a semi-simple and Maxwell extension of the (anti) de Sitter algebra is constructed. Then, a gauge-invariant model has been presented by gauging the Maxwell semi-simple extension of the (anti) de Sitter algebra. We firstly construct a Stelle-West like model action for five-dimensional space-time in which the effects of spontaneous symmetry breaking have been taken into account. In doing so, we get an extended version of Einstein's field equations. Next, we decompose the five-dimensional extended Lie algebra and establish a MacDowell-Mansouri like action that contains the Einstein…
Recently Kahniashivili et al (2006) presented a unified treatment for ultraviolet Lorentz violation (LV) testing through electromagnetic wave propagation in magnetised plasmas, based on dispersion and rotation measured data. Based on the fact discovered recently by Kostelecky et al (2008), that LV may place constraints on spacetime torsion, in this paper it is shown that on the limit of very low frequency torsion waves, it is possible to constraint torsion from Faraday rotation and CMB on a similar fashion as Minkowski spacetime plus torsion. Here the Maxwells modified equations are obtained b…
