We consider a class of fully nonlinear integro-differential operators where the nonlocal integral has two components: the non-degenerate one corresponds to the $α$-stable operator and the second one (possibly degenerate) corresponds to a class of \textit{lower order} Lévy measures. Such operators do not have a global scaling property. We establish Hölder regularity, Harnack inequality and boundary Harnack property of solutions of these operators.
For the singularly perturbed system \[Δu_{i,β}=βu_{i,β}\sum_{j\neq i}u_{j,β}^2, \quad 1\leq i\leq N,\] we prove that flat interfaces are uniformly Lipschitz. As a byproduct of the proof we also obtain the optimal lower bound near the flat interfaces, \[\sum_iu_{i,β}\geq cβ^{-1/4}.\]
In this article we are interested in studying regularity up to the boundary for one-phase singularly perturbed fully nonlinear elliptic problems, associated to high energy activation potentials, namely $$ F(X, \nabla u^{\varepsilon}, D^2 u^{\varepsilon}) = ζ_{\varepsilon}(u^{\varepsilon}) \quad \mbox{in} \quad Ω\subset \R^n $$ where $ζ_{\varepsilon}$ behaves asymptotically as the Dirac measure $δ_{0}$ as $\varepsilon$ goes to zero. We shall establish global gradient bounds independent of the parameter $\varepsilon$.
Rough surface scattering problems are always very challenging both theoretically and numerically. In this paper, we adopt the Bloch transform and the perturbation theory to investigate a special case, i.e., when the rough surface is a slight perturbation of a periodic one. Based on known results from the Bloch transform, the problem could be written into an equivalent bounded variational problem in higher dimensional spaces. The first step is to consider the non-perturbed problem. From the perturbation theory, the solution could be written as a Neumann series. The second step is to consider th…
In this paper, a standard about the existence and upper semi-continuity of pullback attractors in the non-initial space is established for some classes of non-autonomous SPDE. This pullback attractor, which is the omega-limit set of the absorbing set constructed in the initial space, is completely determined by the asymptotic compactness of solutions in both the initial and non-initial spaces. As applications, the existences and upper semi-continuity of pullback attractors in $H^1(\mathbb{R}^N)$ are proved for stochastic non-autonomous reaction-diffusion equation driven by a multiplicative noi…

We prove a couple of results concerning pseudodifferential perturbations of differential operators being sums of squares of vector fields and satisfying Hörmander's condition. The first is on the minimal Gevrey regularity: if a sum of squares with analytic coefficients is perturbed with a pseudodifferential operator of order strictly less than its subelliptic index it still has the Gevrey minimal regularity. We also prove a statement concerning real analytic hypoellipticity for the same type of pseudodifferential perturbations, provided the operator satisfies to some extra conditions (see Theo…
We construct a solution for a class of strongly perturbed semilinear heat equations which blows up in finite time with a prescribed blow-up profile. The construction relies on the reduction of the problem to a finite dimensional one and the use of index theory to conclude.
This paper considers the inverse boundary value problem for the equation $\nabla\cdot(σ\nabla u+a|\nabla u|^{p-2}\nabla u)=0$. We give a procedure for the recovery of the coefficients $σ$ and $a$ from the corresponding Dirichlet-to-Neumann map, under suitable regularity and ellipticity assumptions.
We prove that a probability solution of the stationary Kolmogorov equation generated by a first order perturbation $v$ of the Ornstein--Uhlenbeck operator $L$ possesses a highly integrable density with respect to the Gaussian measure satisfying the non-perturbed equation provided that $v$ is sufficiently integrable. More generally, a similar estimate is proved for solutions to inequalities connected with Markov semigroup generators under the curvature condition $CD(θ,\infty)$. For perturbations from $L^p$ an analog of the Log-Sobolev inequality is obtained. It is also proved in the Gaussian ca…
We consider a system describing the long-time dynamics of an hydrodynamical, density-dependent flow under the effects of gravitational forces. We prove that if the Froude number is sufficiently small such system is globally well posed with respect to a $ H^s, \ s>1/2 $ Sobolev regularity. Moreover if the Froude number converges to zero we prove that the solutions of the aforementioned system converge (strongly) to a stratified three-dimensional Navier-Stokes system. No smallness assumption is assumed on the initial data.
Let $2\le n\le 5$. We establish an apriori interior Hölder regularity of $C^2$-stable solutions to the semilinear equation $-Δu=f(u)$ in any domain of $R^n$ for any nonlinearity $f\in C^{0,1}(R) $.If $f $ is nondecreasing and convex in addition,we obtain an interior Hölder regularity, and hence the local boundedness, of $W^{1,2}(Ω)$-stable solutions by locally approximating them via $C^2(Ω)$-stable solutions. In particular, we do not require any lower bound on $f$.
We analyze stable weak solutions to the fractional Gel'fand problem \begin{equation*} (-Δ)^su=e^u\quad\mathrm{in}\quad Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^n. \end{equation*} We prove that the dimension of the singular set is at most $n-10s.$
The boundedness of stable solutions to semilinear (or reaction-diffusion) elliptic PDEs has been studied since the 1970's. In dimensions 10 and higher, there exist stable energy solutions which are unbounded (or singular). This note describes, for non-expert readers, a recent work in collaboration with Figalli, Ros-Oton, and Serra, where we prove that stable solutions are smooth up to the optimal dimension 9. This answers to an open problem posed by Brezis in the mid-nineties concerning the regularity of extremal solutions to Gelfand-type problems. We also describe, briefly, a famous analogue …
This short note describes the benefit one obtains from a specific construction of a family of parametrices for a class of elliptic boundary value problems perturbed by non-linear terms of product type. The construction is based on the Boutet de Monvel calculus of pseudo-differential boundary operators for the linear elliptic parts, and on paradifferential operators for the product terms.
We investigate the regularity of semi-stable, radially symmetric, and decreasing solutions for a class of quasilinear reaction-diffusion equations in the inhomogeneous context of Riemannian manifolds. We prove uniform boundedness, Lebesgue and Sobolev estimates for this class of solutions for equations involving the p-Laplace Beltrami operator and locally Lipschitz non-linearity. We emphasize that our results do not depend on the boundary conditions and the specific form of the non-linearities and metric. Moreover, as an application, we establish regularity of the extremal solutions for equati…
The nonlinear semigroup generated by the subdifferential of a convex lower semicontinuous function $φ$ has a smoothing effect, discovered by H. Brézis, which implies maximal regularity for the evolution equation. We use this and Schaefer's fixed point theorem to solve the evolution equation perturbed by a Nemytskii-operator of sublinear growth. For this, we need that the sublevel sets of $φ$ are not only closed but even compact. We apply our results to the $p$-Laplacian and also to the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator with respect to $p$-harmonic functions.
We consider a one-Laplace equation perturbed by $p$-Laplacian with $1<p<\infty$. We prove that a weak solution is continuously differentiable ($C^{1}$) if it is convex. Note that similar result fails to hold for the unperturbed one-Laplace equation. The main difficulty is to show $C^{1}$-regularity of the solution at the boundary of a facet where the gradient of the solution vanishes. For this purpose we blow-up the solution and prove that its limit is a constant function by establishing a Liouville-type result, which is proved by showing a strong maximum principle. Our argument is rather elem…
We study the regularity of stable solutions to the problem $$ \left\{ \begin{array}{rcll} (-Δ)^s u &=& f(u) & \text{in} \quad B_1\,, u &\equiv&0 & \text{in} \quad \mathbb R^n\setminus B_1\,, \end{array} \right. $$ where $s\in(0,1)$. Our main result establishes an $L^\infty$ bound for stable and radially decreasing $H^s$ solutions to this problem in dimensions $2 \leq n < 2(s+2+\sqrt{2(s+1)})$. In particular, this estimate holds for all $s\in(0,1)$ in dimensions $2 \leq n\leq 6$. It applies to all nonlinearities $f\in C^2$. For such parameters $s$ and $n$, our result leads to the regularity of …
We study the behaviour of solutions to a class of nonlinear degenerate parabolic problems when the data are perturbed. The class includes the Richards equation, Stefan problem and the parabolic $p$-Laplace equation. We show that, up to a subsequence, weak solutions of the perturbed problem converge uniformly-in-time to weak solutions of the original problem as the perturbed data approach the original data. We do not assume uniqueness or additional regularity of the solution. However, when uniqueness is known, our result demonstrates that the weak solution is uniformly temporally stable to pert…
We examine the system given by \hfill -Δu = λ(v+1)^p \qquad Ω \hfill -Δv = γ(u+1)^θ\qquad Ω, \hfill u = v =0 \qquad \quad \partial Ω, where $ λ,γ$ are positive parameters and where $ 1 < p \le θ$ and where $ Ω$ is a smooth bounded domain in $ R^N$. We show the extremal solutions associated with the above system are bounded provided [\frac{N}{2} < 1 + \frac{2(θ+1)}{pθ-1} (\sqrt{\frac{p θ(p+1)}{θ+1}} + \sqrt{\frac{p θ(p+1)}{θ+1} - \sqrt{\frac{p θ(p+1)}{θ+1}}})]
We prove endpoint estimates with angular regularity for the wave and Dirac equations perturbed with a small potential. The estimates are applied to prove global existence for the cubic Dirac equation perturbed with a small potential, for small initial $H^{1}$ data with additional angular regularity. This implies in particular global existence in the critical energy space $H^{1}$ for small radial data.
We consider the scattering problem on locally perturbed periodic penetrable dielectric layers, which is formulated in terms of the full vector-valued time-harmonic Maxwell's equations. The right-hand side is not assumed to be periodic. At first, we derive a variational formulation for the electromagnetic scattering problem in a suitable Sobolev space on an unbounded domain and reformulate the problem into a family of bounded domain problems using the Bloch-Floquet transform. For this family we can show the unique existence of the solution by applying a carefully designed Helmholtz decompositio…
We establish sharp interior and boundary regularity estimates for solutions to $\partial_t u - L u = f(t, x)$ in $I\times Ω$, with $I \subset \mathbb{R}$ and $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^n$. The operators $L$ we consider are infinitessimal generators of stable Lévy processes. These are linear nonlocal operators with kernels that may be very singular. On the one hand, we establish interior estimates, obtaining that $u$ is $C^{2s+α}$ in $x$ and $C^{1+\fracα{2s}}$ in $t$, whenever $f$ is $C^α$ in $x$ and $C^{\fracα{2s}}$ in $t$. In the case $f\in L^\infty$, we prove that $u$ is $C^{2s-ε}$ in $x$ and $C^{1…
We consider some certain nonlinear perturbations of the stochastic linear-quadratic optimization problems and study the connections between their solutions and the corresponding Markovian backward stochastic diferential equations (BSDEs). Using the methods of stochastic control, nonlinear partial differential equations (PDEs) and BSDEs, we identify conditions for the solvability of the problem and obtain some regularity properties of the solutions.
We study admissible observation operators for perturbed evolution equations using the concept of maximal regularity. We first show the invariance of the maximal $L^p$-regularity under non-autonomous Miyadera-Voigt perturbations. Second, we establish the invariance of admissibility of observation operators under such a class of perturbations. Finally, we illustrate our result with two examples, one on a non-autonomous parabolic system, and the other on an evolution equation with mixed boundary conditions and a non-local perturbation.
We study solutions to $Lu=f$ in $Ω\subset\mathbb R^n$, being $L$ the generator of any, possibly non-symmetric, stable Lévy process. On the one hand, we study the regularity of solutions to $Lu=f$ in $Ω$, $u=0$ in $Ω^c$, in $C^{1,α}$ domains~$Ω$. We show that solutions $u$ satisfy $u/d^γ\in C^{\varepsilon_\circ}\big(\overlineΩ\big)$, where $d$ is the distance to $\partialΩ$, and $γ=γ(L,ν)$ is an explicit exponent that depends on the Fourier symbol of operator $L$ and on the unit normal $ν$ to the boundary $\partialΩ$. On the other hand, we establish new integration by parts identities in half s…
In this paper we prove a Sobolev and a Morrey type inequality involving the mean curvature and the tangential gradient with respect to the level sets of the function that appears in the inequalities. Then, as an application, we establish \textit{a priori} estimates for semi-stable solutions of $-Δ_p u= g(u)$ in a smooth bounded domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$. In particular, we obtain new $L^r$ and $W^{1,r}$ bounds for the extremal solution $u^\star$ when the domain is strictly convex. More precisely, we prove that $u^\star\in L^\infty(Ω)$ if $n\leq p+2$ and $u^\star\in L^{\frac{np}{n-p-2}}(Ω)\…
We consider the reaction-diffusion problem $-Δ_g u = f(u)$ in $\mathcal{B}_R$ with zero Dirichlet boundary condition, posed in a geodesic ball $\mathcal{B}_R$ with radius $R$ of a Riemannian model $(M,g)$. This class of Riemannian manifolds includes the classical \textit{space forms}, i.e., the Euclidean, elliptic, and hyperbolic spaces. For the class of semistable solutions we prove radial symmetry and monotonicity. Furthermore, we establish $L^\infty$, $L^p$, and $W^{1,p}$ estimates which are optimal and do not depend on the nonlinearity $f$. As an application, under standard assumptions on …
We consider an elliptic Kolmogorov equation $λu - Ku = f$ in a separable Hilbert space $H$. The Kolmogorov operator $K$ is associated to an infinite dimensional convex gradient system: $dX = (AX - DU(X))dt + dW (t)$, where $A $ is a self--adjoint operator in $H$ and $U$ is a convex lower semicontinuous function. Under mild assumptions we prove that for $λ>0$ and $f\in L^2(H,ν)$ the weak solution $u$ belongs to the Sobolev space $W^{2,2}(H,ν)$, where $ν$ is the log-concave probability measure of the system. Moreover maximal estimates on the gradient of $u$ are proved. The maximal regularity res…
We consider the equation $-Δ_p u=f(u)$ in a smooth bounded domain of $\mathbb{R}^n $, where $Δ_p$ is the $p$-Laplace operator. Explicit examples of unbounded stable energy solutions are known if $n\geq p+4p/(p-1)$. Instead, when $n<p+4p/(p-1)$, stable solutions have been proved to be bounded only in the radial case or under strong assumptions on $f$. In this article we solve a long-standing open problem: we prove an interior $C^α$ bound for stable solutions which holds for every nonnegative $f\in C^1$ whenever $p\geq2$ and the optimal condition $n<p+4p/(p-1)$ holds. When $p\in(1,2)$, we obtain…
We investigate the existence and the boundary regularity of source-type self-similar solutions to the thin-film equation $h_t=-(h^nh_{zzz})_z+(h^{n+3})_{zz},$ $ t>0,\; z\in \mathbb{R};\; h(0,z)= ωδ(z)$ where $n\in (\frac{3}{2},3),\; ω> 0$ and $δ$ is the Dirac mass at the origin. It is known that the leading order expansion near the edge of the support coincides with that of a traveling-wave solution for the standard thin-film equation: $h_t=-(h^nh_{zzz})_z$. In this paper we sharpen this result, proving that the higher order corrections are analytic with respect to three variables: the first o…
We study the quasilinear elliptic equation \begin{equation*} -Qu=e^u \ \ \text{in} \ \ Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^{N} \end{equation*} where the operator $Q$, known as Finsler-Laplacian (or anisotropic Laplacian), is defined by $$Qu:=\sum_{i=1}^{N}\frac{\partial}{\partial x_{i}}(F(\nabla u)F_{ξ_{i}}(\nabla u)),$$ where $F_{ξ_{i}}=\frac{\partial F}{\partialξ_{i}}$ and $F: \mathbb{R}^{N}\rightarrow[0,+\infty)$ is a convex function of $ C^{2}(\mathbb{R}^{N}\setminus\{0\})$, that satisfies certain assumptions. For bounded domain $Ω$ and for a stable weak solution of the above equation, we prove that the H…
We study the blowup behavior of a class of strongly perturbed wave equations with a focusing supercritical power nonlinearity in three spatial dimensions. We show that the ODE blowup profile of the unperturbed equation still describes the asymptotics of stable blowup. As a consequence, stable ODE-type blowup is seen to be a universal phenomenon that exists in a large class of semilinear wave equations.
We establish Hölder regularity and gradient estimates for the transition semigroup of the solutions to the following SDE: $$ {\rm d} X_t=σ(t, X_{t-}){\rm d} Z_t+b (t, X_t){\rm d} t,\ \ X_0=x\in{\mathbb R}^d, $$ where $( Z_t)_{t\geq 0}$ is a $d$-dimensional cylindrical $α$-stable process with $α\in (0, 2)$, $σ(t, x):{\mathbb R}_+\times{\mathbb R}^d\to{\mathbb R}^d\otimes{\mathbb R}^d$ is bounded measurable, uniformly nondegenerate and Lipschitz continuous in $x$ uniformly in $t$, and $b (t, x):{\mathbb R}_+\times{\mathbb R}^d\to{\mathbb R}^d$ is bounded $β$-Hölder continuous in $x$ uniformly in…
For $α\in [1,2)$ we consider operators of the form $$L f(x)=\int_{R^d} [f(x+h)-f(x)-1_{(|h|\leq 1)} \nabla f(x)\cdot h] \frac{A(x,h)}{|h|^{d+α}}$$ and for $α\in (0,1)$ we consider the same operator but where the $\nabla f$ term is omitted. We prove, under appropriate conditions on $A(x,h)$, that the solution $u$ to $L u=f$ will be in $C^{α+β}$ if $f\in C^β$.
The Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation perturbed by a multiplicative space-dependent noise is considered for a ferromagnet filling a bounded three-dimensional domain. We show the existence of weak martingale solutions taking values in a sphere $\mathbb S^2$. The regularity of weak solutions is also discussed. Some of the regularity results are new even for the deterministic Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation.
In this paper, we consider a product of a symmetric stable process in $\mathbb{R}^d$ and a one-dimensional Brownian motion in $\mathbb{R}^+$. Then we define a class of harmonic functions with respect to this product process. We show that bounded non-negative harmonic functions in the upper-half space satisfy Harnack inequality and prove that they are locally Hölder continuous. We also argue a result on Littlewood-Paley functions which are obtained by the $α$-harmonic extension of an $L^p(\mathbb{R}^d)$ function.
We establish sharp regularity estimates for solutions to $Lu=f$ in $Ω\subset\mathbb R^n$, being $L$ the generator of any stable and symmetric Lévy process. Such nonlocal operators $L$ depend on a finite measure on $S^{n-1}$, called the spectral measure. First, we study the interior regularity of solutions to $Lu=f$ in $B_1$. We prove that if $f$ is $C^α$ then $u$ belong to $C^{α+2s}$ whenever $α+2s$ is not an integer. In case $f\in L^\infty$, we show that the solution $u$ is $C^{2s}$ when $s\neq1/2$, and $C^{2s-ε}$ for all $ε>0$ when $s=1/2$. Then, we study the boundary regularity of solutions…
For two self-adjoint operators $H,A$ we show that a general commutation relation of type $[H,\mathrm{i}A]=Q(H)+K$, in addition to regularity of $H$ and Kato-smoothness of $K$, guarantee pointwise in time decay rates of diverse order. The methodology is based on the construction of a modified conjugate operator $\tilde{A}$ that reduces the problem to previously developed estimates when $K=0$. Our results apply to energy thresholds and do not rely on resolvent estimates. We discuss applications for the Schrödinger equation (SE) with potential of critical decay, and for the free SE on an asymptot…
