We investigate the existence and the boundary regularity of source-type self-similar solutions to the thin-film equation $h_t=-(h^nh_{zzz})_z+(h^{n+3})_{zz},$ $ t>0,\; z\in \mathbb{R};\; h(0,z)= ωδ(z)$ where $n\in (\frac{3}{2},3),\; ω> 0$ and $δ$ is the Dirac mass at the origin. It is known that the leading order expansion near the edge of the support coincides with that of a traveling-wave solution for the standard thin-film equation: $h_t=-(h^nh_{zzz})_z$. In this paper we sharpen this result, proving that the higher order corrections are analytic with respect to three variables: the first one is just the {spatial} variable, whereas the second and the third (except for $n = 2$) are irrational powers of it. It is known that this third variable does not appear for the thin-film equation without gravity.
We prove some C^{1,α} regularity in some gradient constraint problem and application to Torsion problem and micromagnetic problem and variational inequality.
In this paper we study the regularity of weak solutions to systems of p-Stokes type, describing the motion of some shear thinning fluids in certain steady regimes. In particular we address the problem of regularity up to the boundary improving previous results especially in terms of the allowed range for the parameter p.
The present paper is concerned with the analysis of two strongly coupled systems of degenerate parabolic partial differential equations arising in multiphase thin film flows. In particular, we consider the two-phase thin film Muskat problem and the two-phase thin film approximation of the Stokes flow under the influence of both, capillary and gravitational forces. The existence of global weak solutions for medium size initial data in large function spaces is proved. Moreover, exponential decay results towards the equilibrium state are established, where the decay rate can be estimated by expli…
We study thin obstacle problems involving the energy functional with $p(x)$-growth. We prove higher integrability and Hölder regularity for the gradient of minimizers of the thin obstacle problems under the assumption that the variable exponent $p(x)$ is Hölder continuous.
We present here an analysis of the regularity of minimizers of a variational model for epitaxially strained thin-films identified by the authors in the companion paper [Davoli E., Piovano P., Derivation of a heteroepitaxial thin-film model. Submitted 2018]. The regularity of energetically-optimal film profiles is studied by extending previous methods and by developing new ideas based on transmission problems. The achieved regularity results relate to both the Stranski-Krastanow and the Volmer-Weber modes, the possibility of different elastic properties between the film and the substrate, and t…
In this paper, we study almost minimizers for the parabolic thin obstacle (or Signorini) problem with zero obstacle. We establish their $H^{σ,σ/2}$-regularity for every $0<σ<1$, as well as $H^{β,β/2}$-regularity of their spatial gradients on the either side of the thin space for some $0<β<1$. A similar result is also obtained for almost minimizers for the Signorini problem with variable Hölder coefficients.
We prove $C^{2,α}$ regularity of sufficiently flat free boundaries, for the thin one-phase problem in which the free boundary occurs on a lower dimensional subspace. This problem appears also as a model of a one-phase free boundary problem in the context of the fractional Laplacian $(-Δ)^{1/2}$.
Variational inequalities with thin obstacles and Signorini-type boundary conditions are classical problems in the calculus of variations, arising in numerous applications. In the linear case many refined results are known, while in the nonlinear setting our understanding is still at a preliminary stage. In this paper we prove $C^1$ regularity for the solutions to a general class of quasi-linear variational inequalities with thin obstacles and $C^{1, α}$ regularity for variational inequalities under Signorini-type conditions on the boundary of a domain.
We proved the existence and uniqueness of a traveling wave solution to the thin film equation with a Navier slip condition at the liquid-solid interface. We obtain explicit lower and upper bounds for the solution and an absolute error estimate of approximation of a solution to the thin films equation by the traveling-wave solution.
An approach to some "optimal" (more precisely, non-improvable) regularity of solutions of the thin film equation u_{t} = -\nabla \cdot(|u|^{n} \nabla \D u) in \ren \times \re_+, u(x,0)=u_0(x) in \re^N, where n in (0,2) is a fixed exponent, with smooth compactly supported initial data u_0(x), in dimensions $N \geq 2$ is discussed. Namely, a precise exponent for the Hölder continuity with respect to the spatial radial variable $|x|$ is obtained by construction of a Graveleau-type focusing self-similar solution. As a consequence, optimal regularity of the gradient $\nabla u$ in certain $L^p$ spac…
Starting from a nonlinear 2D/1D fluid-structure interaction problem between a thin layer of a viscous fluid and a thin elastic structure, on the vanishing limit of the relative fluid thickness, we rigorously derive a sixth-order thin-film equation describing the dynamics of vertical displacements of the structure. The procedure is essentially based on quantitative energy estimates, quantified in terms of the relative fluid thickness, and a uniform no-contact result between the structure and the solid substrate. The sixth-order thin-film equation is justified in the sense of strong convergence …
We derive several lubrication approximation models, using Shikhmurzaev's approach to the contact line problem, obtained in \cite{GNV}. The first two lubrication models describe thin film flow of incompressible fluids on solid substrates, based on different orders of magnitude of the slip length parameter. The third lubrication model describes a meniscus formation where a wedge-shaped solid immerses in a thin film of fluid.
In this thesis, we consider the thin-film equation with nonlinear surface tension term in one space dimension. Relying on the corresponding energy and entropy estimates, we prove existence of weak solutions as well as nonnegativity results.
We prove existence of weak solutions of a fractional thin film type equation in any space dimension and for any order of the equation. The proof is based on a gradient flow technique in the space of Borel probability measures endowed with the Wasserstein distance.
In this article we study solutions to the (interior) thin obstacle problem under low regularity assumptions on the coefficients, the obstacle and the underlying manifold. Combining the linearization method of Andersson \cite{An16} and the epiperimetric inequality from \cite{FS16}, \cite{GPSVG15}, we prove the optimal $C^{1,\min\{α,1/2\}}$ regularity of solutions in the presence of $C^{0,α}$ coefficients $a^{ij}$ and $C^{1,α}$ obstacles $ϕ$. Moreover we investigate the regularity of the regular free boundary and show that it has the structure of a $C^{1,γ}$ manifold for some $γ\in (0,1)$.
A thin film on a horizontal solid substrate and coated with a soluble surfactant is considered. The governing degenerate parabolic equations for the film height and the surfactant concentrations on the surface and in the bulk are derived using a lubrication approximation when gravity is taken into account. It is shown that the steady states are asymptotically stable.
We consider a two-dimensional motion of a thin film flowing down an inclined plane under the influence of the gravity and the surface tension. In order to investigate the stability of such flow, we often use a thin film approximation, which is an approximation obtained by the perturbation expansion with respect to the aspect ratio of the film. The famous example of the approximate equations are the Burgers equation, Kuramoto--Sivashinsky equation, KdV--Burgers equation, KdV--Kuramoto--Sivashinsky equation, and so on. In this paper, we give a mathematically rigorous justification of a thin film…
We consider a two-dimensional motion of a thin film flowing down an inclined plane under the influence of the gravity and the surface tension. In order to investigate the stability of such flow, it is hard to treat the Navier--Stokes equations directly, so that a thin film approximation is often used. It is an approximation obtained by the perturbation expansion with respect to the aspect ratio $δ$ of the film under the thin film regime $δ\ll1$. Our purpose is to give a mathematically rigorous justification of the thin film approximation by establishing an error estimate between the solution o…
The quasilinear fourth-order thin film equation in $R^N$ is shown to admit infinite countable families of global and blow-up similarity solutions, which are originated in the limit from eigenfunctions of the corresponding linear non-self-adjoint operators.
It is shown that a Riemann-type problem with discontinuous data of sign-type for the thin film equation, which degenerates at +1 and -1, admits a self-similar solution. Both FBP and the Cauchy problem (oscillatory solutions near interfaces) settings are taken into account.
We show that various asymptotic properties of global solutions of a fourth-order quasilinear thin film equation can be described by branching from corresponding solutions of the linear bi-harmonic equation. This includes a countable family of self-similar solutions and other aspects.
We consider a second order thin curved film whose behavior is governed by an energy made up of a first order nonlinear part depending on the gradient of the deformation augmented by a quadratic second order part depending on the tensor of second derivatives of the deformation. We carry out a 3D-2D analysis through an asymptotic expansion in powers of the thickness of the film as it tends to zero.
Let $M$ be an $n$-dimensional complete simply connected Riemannian manifold with sectional curvature bounded above by a nonpositive constant $-κ^2$. Using the cone total curvature $TC(Γ)$ of a graph $Γ$ which was introduced by Gulliver and Yamada Math. Z. 2006, we prove that the density at any point of a soap film-like surface $Σ$ spanning a graph $Γ\subset M$ is less than or equal to $\frac{1}{2π}\{TC(Γ) - κ^{2}\area(p\mbox{$\times\hspace*{-0.178cm}\times$}Γ)\}$. From this density estimate we obtain the regularity theorems for soap film-like surfaces spanning graphs with small total curvature…
We consider singular limits of the three-dimensional Ginzburg-Landau functional for a superconductor with thin-film geometry, in a constant external magnetic field. The superconducting domain has characteristic thickness on the scale $\eps>0$, and we consider the simultaneous limit as the thickness $\eps\rightarrow 0$ and the Ginzburg-Landau parameter $κ\rightarrow\infty$. We assume that the applied field is strong (on the order of $\eps^{-1}$ in magnitude) in its components tangential to the film domain, and of order $\logκ$ in its dependence on $κ$. We prove that the Ginzburg-Landau energy $…
Dimension-reduction homogenization results for thin films have been obtained under hypotheses of periodicity or almost-periodicity of the energies in the directions of the mid-plane of the film. In this note we consider thin films, obtained as sections of a periodic medium with a mid-plane that may be incommensurate; that is, not containing periods other than $0$. A geometric almost-periodicity argument similar to the cut-and-project argument used for quasicrystals allows to prove a general homogenization result.
