We investigate the left-right entanglement entropy of a boundary state, corresponding to a dynamical D$p$-brane with the internal and background fields. We assume that the brane has a tangential linear motion and a rotation, and is dressed with an internal $U(1)$ gauge potential and the Kalb-Ramond tensor field $B_{μν}$. We derive the entanglement entropy via the Rényi entropy by applying the replica trick. Our calculations will be in the context of the bosonic string theory.
We study the time evolution of entanglement entropy in expanding universes with various matters. To describe expanding universes holographically, we take into account a braneworld moving in an asymptotic AdS space involving a uniform $p$-brane gas. In the braneworld model, an observer living in the braneworld detects the bulk motion of the braneworld as an expanding universe. We show that the entanglement entropy of expanding universes increases by the volume law in the early time and by the area law in the late time. We further consider the cosmological horizon, which is the border of the vis…
Like BPS D3 brane, the non-supersymmetric (non-susy) D3 brane of type IIB string theory is also known to have a decoupling limit and leads to a non-supersymmetric AdS/CFT correspondence. The throat geometry in this case represents a QFT which is neither conformal nor supersymmetric. The `black' version of the non-susy D3 brane in the decoupling limit describes a QFT at finite temperature. Here we first compute the entanglement entropy for small subsystem of such QFT from the decoupled geometry of `black' non-susy D3 brane using holographic technique. Then we study the entanglement thermodynami…
In the context of the gauge/gravity duality applications, we study and compute the entanglement entropy of gauge theories corresponding to string/M theories on D3-, M2- and M5-brane backgrounds. This is achieved using the Ryu-Takayanagi formula. We obtain the entanglement entropy for the general cases of the D3-, M2- and M5-brane backgrounds and also for the near horizon AdS limit, as well as the non-conformal flat space limit in each case.
We compute the left-right entanglement entropy for Dp-branes in string theory. We employ the CFT approach to string theory Dp-branes, in particular, its presentation as coherent states of the closed string sector. The entanglement entropy is computed as the von Neumann entropy for a density matrix resulting from integration over the left-moving degrees of freedom. We discuss various crucial ambiguities related to sums over spin structures and argue that different choices capture different physics; however, we advance a themodynamic argument that seems to favor a particular choice of replica. W…
In this work an algorithm is proposed to calculate entropy for field theories living on NS five branes, which gives a result invariant under T-duality. This is a deformation of the well known Ryu-Takayanagi formula, which takes into account dependence of localized backgrounds for the branes on winding modes of strings.
We consider the left-right entanglement (LREE) entropy in 1+1 dimensions for WZW models on a circle, and for WZW models on untwisted and twisted D-branes. The consequences of level-rank duality for these applications is presented which provides a map of LREE from large to small central charge.
We compute the renormalized entanglement entropy (REE) for BPS black solutions in ${\cal N}=2$, 4d gauged supergravity. We find that this quantity decreases monotonically with the size of the entangling region until it reaches a critical point, then increases and approaches the entropy density of the brane. This behavior can be understood as a consequence of the REE being driven by two competing factors, namely entanglement and the mixedness of the black brane. In the UV entanglement dominates, whereas in the IR the mixedness takes over.
The AdS-bubble solutions interestingly mimic Schrödinger-like geometries when expressed in light-cone coordinates. These D$p$ bubble vacuas exhibit asymmetric scaling property with a negative dynamical exponent of time $a<0$, but are smooth geometries. Through a time-like T-duality we map these vacua to E$p$-brane bubbles with $a>0$ in type II* super-strings. We obtain an expression for the entanglement entropy for `bubble E3-branes'. It is argued that the entropy from E3-bubbles has to be the lowest.
We examine the deSitter entropy in the braneworld model with the Gauss-Bonnet/Lovelock terms. Then, we can see that the deSitter entropy computed through the Euclidean action exactly coincides with the holographic entanglement entropy.
We perform a systematic search for globally defined MSSM-like and left-right symmetric models on D6-branes on the T6/Z(2)xZ(6)xOR orientifold with discrete torsion. Our search is exhaustive for models that are independent of the value of the one free complex structure modulus. Preliminary investigations suggest that there exists one prototype of visible sector for MSSM-like and another for left-right symmetric models with differences arising from various hidden sector completions to global models. For each prototype, we provide the full matter spectrum, as well as the Yukawa and other three-po…
We compute the holographic entanglement entropy contribution from planar two-dimensional defects in six-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=(2,0)$ superconformal field theory, holographically dual to probe M2- and M5-branes in $AdS_7 \times S^4$. In particular, we test the viability of the universal contribution of the defect to entanglement entropy as a candidate $C$-function. We find that this coefficient is not monotonic under defect renormalization group flows triggered by the vacuum expectation value of a marginal operator. Another candidate $C$-function, the on-shell action inside the entanglement …
The notion of generalized gravitational entropy introduced by Lewkowycz and Maldacena allows, via the AdS/CFT correspondence, to calculate CFT entanglement entropies. We adapt the method to the case where flavor branes are present and treated in the probe approximation. This allows to calculate the leading flavor correction to the CFT entanglement entropy from the on-shell action of the probe, while dealing with the backreaction is avoided entirely and from the outset. As an application we give concise derivations for the contribution of massless and massive flavor degrees of freedom to the en…
Following [arXiv:1202.5935 [hep-th]] and [arXiv:1212.4328 [hep-th]], we study non-conformal brane plane wave backgrounds dual to strongly coupled gauge theories with constant energy flux and holographic entanglement entropy for strip subsystems in them. We find that for the strip direction along the direction of the energy flux, the finite cutoff-independent part of entanglement entropy can be estimated in terms of a dimensionless combination of the energy density and the strip dimensions, alongwith an effective scale-dependent number of degrees of freedom. For the strip orthogonal to the flux…
We calculate the entanglement entropy of scalar perturbations due to gravitational non-linearities present in any model of canonically-coupled, single-field ekpyrosis. Specifically, we focus on a recent model of improved ekpyrosis which is able to generate a scale-invariant power spectrum of curvature perturbations and gravitational waves as well as have a non-singular bounce due to an S-brane at the end of ekpyrotic contraction. By requiring that the entanglement entropy remians subdominant to the thermal entropy produced during reheating, we get an upper bound on the energy scale of the boun…
We study the effects of asymmetry in entanglement thermodynamics of the CFT subsystems. It is found that `boosted' $p$-branes backgrounds give rise to the first law of the entanglement thermodynamics where the CFT pressure plays decisive role in the entanglement. Two different strip like subsystems, one parallel to the boost and the other perpendicular, are studied in the perturbative regime, where $T_{thermal}\ll T_E$. We also discuss the AdS-wave backgrounds where some universal bounds can be obtained.
We study corner contributions to holographic entanglement entropy in non-conformal backgrounds: a kink for D2-branes as well as a cone and two different types of crease for D4-branes. Unlike 2+1-dimensional CFTs, the corner contribution to the holographic entanglement entropy of D2-branes exhibits a power law behaviour rather than a logarithmic term. However, the logarithmic term emerges in the holographic entanglement entropy of D4-branes. We identify the logarithmic term for a cone in D4-brane background as the universal contribution under appropriate limits and compare it with other physica…
We first calculate the holographic entanglement entropy of M5 branes on a circle and see that it has phase transition during decreasing the compactified radius. In particular, it is shown that the entanglement entropy scales as $N^3$. Next, we investigate the holographic entanglement entropy of D0+D4 system on a circle and see that it scales as $N^2$ at low energy, likes as a gauge theory with instantons. However, at high energy it transforms to a phase which scales as $N^3$, like as M5 branes system. We also present the general form of holographic entanglement entropy of Dp, ${\rm D_p+D_{p+4}…
We present new classes of supersymmetric Standard-like models from type IIA $\IT^6/(\IZ_2\times \IZ_2)$ orientifold with intersecting D6-branes. D6-branes can wrap general supersymmetric three-cycles of $\IT^6=\IT^2\times \IT^2\times \IT^2$, and any $\IT^2$ is allowed to be tilted. The models still suffer from additional exotics, however we obtained solutions with fewer Higgs doublets, as well as models with all three families of left-handed quarks and leptons arising from the same intersecting sector, and examples of a genuine left-right symmetric model with three copies of left-handed and ri…
Entanglement temperature is an interesting quantity which relates the increased amount of entanglement entropy and energy for a weakly excited state in entanglement first-law, it is proportional to the inverse of the size of the entanglement subsystem and only depends on the shape of the entanglement region. We find the explicit formula of entanglement temperature for the general hyperscaling violation backgrounds with a strip-subsystem. We then investigate the entanglement temperature for a round ball-subsystem, we check that the entanglement temperature have a universal form when the hypersc…
We study the entanglement of closed strings degrees of freedom in order to investigate the microscopic structure and statistics of objects as D-branes. By considering the macroscopic pure state (MPS) limit, whenever the entanglement entropy goes to zero (in such a way that the macroscopic properties of the state are preserved), we show that boundary states may be recovered in this limit and, furthermore, the description through closed string (perturbative) degrees of freedom collapses. We also show how the thermal properties of branes and closed strings could be described by this model, and it…
We give a prescription for calculating the entanglement entropy in holographic probe brane systems by systematically taking the leading order backreaction of the probe brane into account. We find a simple compact double integral formula, which is insensitive to many details of the backreaction, most notably the internal space or the non-metric fields sourced by the probe. We validate our method by comparing to exact results in solvable toy models. We also determine the entanglement entropies for a sphere and a strip in the top-down D3/D7 and D3/D5 system. For the sphere the entanglement entrop…
In this note, we study the first law of entanglement in a boundary conformal field theory (BCFT) dual to warped AdS cut off by a brane. Exploiting the symmetry of boundary-centered half-balls in the BCFT, and using Wald's covariant phase space formalism in the presence of boundaries, we derive constraints from the first law for a broad range of covariant bulk Lagrangians. We explicitly evaluate these constraints for Einstein gravity, and find a local equation on the brane which is precisely the Neumann condition of Takayanagi [arXiv:1105.5165] at linear order in metric perturbations. This is a…
We study the entanglement entropy for open bosonic strings on multiple $Dp$-branes by using the covariant open string field theory. Choosing one of the spatial coordinates which are tangential to the hyperplane on which $Dp$-branes are located, we divide the hyperplane into two halves. By using the string wavefunction in the Fock space representation, we evaluate the entanglement entropy. The entanglement entropy is found to be proportional to the area of $(p-1)$-dimensional boundary of the bipartite hyperplanes and divergent in the ultraviolet (UV) region as well as in the infrared (IR) regio…
Gauge/gravity duality relates an AdS black hole with uniform boost with a boosted strongly-coupled CFT at finite temperature. We study the perturbative change in holographic entanglement entropy for strip sub-region in such gravity solutions up to third order and try to formulate a first law of entanglement thermodynamics including higher order corrections. The first law receives important contribution from an entanglement chemical potential in presence of boost. We find that suitable modifications to the entanglement temperature and entanglement chemical potential are required to account for …
A family of deformed black branes is employed to examine the confinement/deconfinement phase transition in AdS/QCD. The holographic entanglement entropy (HEE) plays the role of the order parameter driving the confinement/deconfinement phase transition. The binding energy of quark-antiquark bound states and the critical length that makes a null variation of the HEE, together with the critical temperature separating the deconfined quark-gluon plasma to the confined hadronic phase, are discussed in the deformed black brane background, matching current experimental hadronic data.
We study the holographic representation of the entanglement entropy, recently proposed by Ryu and Takayanagi, in a braneworld context. The holographic entanglement entropy of a de Sitter brane embedded in an anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetime is evaluated using geometric quantities, and it is compared with two kinds of de Sitter entropy: a quarter of the area of the cosmological horizon on the brane and entropy calculated from the Euclidean path integral. We show that the three entropies coincide with each other in a certain limit. Remarkably, the entropy obtained from the Euclidean path integral …
The BPS D3 brane has a non-supersymmetric cousin, called the non-susy D3 brane, which is also a solution of type IIB string theory. The corresponding counterpart of black D3 brane is the `black' non-susy D3 brane and like the BPS D3 brane, it also has a decoupling limit, where the decoupled geometry (in the case we are interested, this is asymptotically AdS$_5$ $\times$ S$^5$) is the holographic dual of a non-conformal, non-supersymmetric QFT in $(3+1)$-dimensions. In this QFT we compute the entanglement entropy (EE), the complexity and the Fisher information metric holographically using the a…
Recent progress in our understanding of the black hole information paradox has lead to a new prescription for calculating entanglement entropies, which involves special subsystems in regions where gravity is dynamical, called \textit{quantum extremal islands}. We present a simple holographic framework where the emergence of quantum extremal islands can be understood in terms of the standard Ryu-Takayanagi prescription, used for calculating entanglement entropies in the boundary theory. Our setup describes a $d$-dimensional boundary CFT coupled to a ($d$-1)-dimensional defect, which are dual to…
It has been suggested in arXiv:2004.00613 that in Dp-brane holography, entanglement in the target space of the D-brane Yang-Mills theory provides a precise notion of bulk entanglement in the gravity dual. We expand on this discussion by providing a gauge invariant characterization of operator sub-algebras corresponding to such entanglement. This is achieved by finding a projection operator which imposes a constraint characterizing the target space region of interest. By considering probe branes in the Coulomb branch we provide motivation for why the operator sub-algebras we consider are approp…
We study the mutual information between pairs of regions on the two asymptotic boundaries of maximally-extended anisotropic black-brane solutions. This quantity characterizes the local pattern of entanglement of thermofield double states which are dual to these geometries. We analyse the disruption of the mutual information in anisotropic shock wave geometries and show that the entanglement velocity plays an important role in this phenomenon. Besides that we compute several chaos-related properties of this system, like the entanglement velocity, the butterfly velocity and the scrambling time. …
We obtain the left-right entanglement entropy (LREE) for a D$p$-brane with tangential motion in the presence of a $U(1)$ gauge potential, the Kalb-Ramond field and an open string tachyon field. Thus, at first we extract the Rényi entropy and then by taking a special limit of it we acquire the entanglement entropy. We shall investigate the behavior of the LREE under the tachyon condensation phenomenon. We observe that the deformation of the LREE, through this process, reveals the collapse of the brane. Besides, we examine the second law of thermodynamics for the LREE under tachyon condensation,…
We study thermodynamics of entanglement entropy for weakly excited states in certain non-conformal fields theories, whose gravity duals are given by non-conformal Dp-branes. We observe that the entanglement entropy of a sufficiently small system in non-conformal backgrounds still obeys a first-law like relation, just as the AdS counterparts investigated in arXiv: 1212.1164 [hep-th]. The effective temperature is proportional to the inverse of the size of the subsystem. The proportionality is a dimensionless constant which is only determined by the shape of the entangling region and independent …
In this paper, we will regularize the holographic entanglement entropy, holographic complexity and fidelity susceptibility for a configuration of D3-branes. We will also study the regularization of the holographic complexity from action for a configuration of D3-branes. It will be demonstrated that for a spherical shell of D3-branes the regularized holographic complexity is always greater than or equal to than the regularized fidelity susceptibility. Furthermore, we will also demonstrate that the regularized holographic complexity is related to the regularized holographic entanglement entropy …
The entanglement entropy of various geometries is calculated for the boundary theory dual to a stack of N Dp-branes. The entanglement entropies are readily expressed in terms of the effective coupling at the appropriate energy scales. The results are also compared to the entropy density of a black brane and some universal properties of holographic entropy are found.
We compute holographic entanglement entropy for subregions of a BCFT thermal state living on a nongravitating black hole background. The system we consider is doubly holographic and dual to an eternal black string with an embedded Karch-Randall brane that is parameterized by its angle. Entanglement islands are conventionally expected to emerge at late times to preserve unitarity at finite temperature, but recent calculations at zero temperature have shown such islands do not exist when the brane lies below a critical angle. When working at finite temperature in the context of a black string, w…
We calculate the evolution of the geometric entanglement entropy following a local quench in the D1D5 conformal field theory, a two-dimensional theory that describes a particular bound state of D1 and D5 branes. The quench corresponds to a localized insertion of the exactly marginal operator that deforms the field theory off of the orbifold (free) point in its moduli space. This deformation ultimately leads to thermalization of the system. We find an exact analytic expression for the entanglement entropy of any spatial interval as a function of time after the quench and analyze its properties.…
What is the meaning of entanglement in a theory of extended objects such as strings? To address this question we consider the spatial entanglement between two intervals in the Gross-Taylor model, the string theory dual to two-dimensional Yang-Mills theory at large $N$. The string diagrams that contribute to the entanglement entropy describe open strings with endpoints anchored to the entangling surface, as first argued by Susskind. We develop a canonical theory of these open strings, and describe how closed strings are divided into open strings at the level of the Hilbert space. We derive the …
We study various entanglement measures associated with certain non-conformal field theories. We consider non-conformal D$p$-brane backgrounds, which are dual to these field theories, for our holographic analysis. Restricting our interests in $p=1,2,4$, we explicitly compute properties of holographic entanglement entropy and entanglement wedge cross section, $\text{E}_{W}$, corresponding to two parallel strip shaped boundary subregions in these set ups. We study low and high temperature behaviours of these quantities analytically as well as using numerical methods. In all cases, the $\text{E}_{…
Entanglement entropy is an important quantity in field theory, but its definition poses some challenges. The naive definition involves an extension of quantum field theory in which one assigns Hilbert spaces to spatial sub-regions. For two-dimensional topological quantum field theory we show that the appropriate extension is the open-closed topological quantum field theory of Moore and Segal. With the addition of one additional axiom characterizing the `entanglement brane' we show how entanglement calculations can be cast in this framework. We use this formalism to calculate modular Hamiltonia…
From the quantum field theory point of view, matter and gauge fields are generally expected to be localised around branes or topological defects occurring in extra dimensions. Here I discuss a simple scenario where, by starting with a five dimensional SU(3) gauge theory, we end up with several 4-D parallel branes with localised "chiral" fermions and gauge fields to them. I will show that it is possible to reproduce the electroweak model confined to a single brane, allowing a simple and geometrical approach to the fermion hierarchy problem. Some nice results of this construction are: Gauge and …
To understand the time-dependent quantum correlation in expanding universes, we study the time-dependent entanglement entropy in the braneworld model. If we take into account a generalized string cloud geometry caused by uniformly distributed open strings, cosmologies on the braneworld result in the standard Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker cosmologies with various matter contents. On the dual field theory side, open strings are reinterpreted as a fundamental matter, while the black hole mass corresponds to the excitation energy of massless gauge bosons. In this work, we show how the string…
We use entanglement entropy to define a central charge associated to a two-dimensional defect or boundary in a conformal field theory (CFT). We present holographic calculations of this central charge for several maximally supersymmetric CFTs dual to eleven-dimensional supergravity in Anti-de Sitter space, namely the M5-brane theory with a Wilson surface defect and three-dimensional CFTs related to the M2-brane theory with a boundary. Our results for the central charge depend on a partition of the number of M2-branes, $N$, ending on the number of M5-branes, $M$. For the Wilson surface, the part…
Localization of a spin-$1/2$ fermion on the braneworld is an important and interesting problem. It is well known that a five-dimensional free massless fermion $Ψ$ minimally coupled to gravity cannot be localized on the Randall-Sundrum braneworld. In order to trap such a fermion, the coupling between the fermion and bulk scalar fields should be introduced. In this paper, localization and quasilocalization of a bulk fermion on the thick braneworld generated by two scalar fields (a kink scalar $ϕ$ and a dilaton scalar $π$) are investigated. Two types of couplings between the fermion and two scala…
We introduce a simple scenario where, by starting with a five-dimensional SU(3) gauge theory, we end up with several 4-D parallel branes with localized fermions and gauge fields. Similar to the split fermion scenario, the confinement of fermions is generated by the nontrivial topological solution of a SU(3) scalar field. The 4-D fermions are found to be chiral, and to have interesting properties coming from their 5-D group representation structure. The gauge fields, on the other hand, are localized by loop corrections taking place at the branes produced by the fermions. We show that these two …

In this work, we consider the question of local Hilbert space factorization in 2D conformal field theory. Generalizing previous work on entanglement and open-closed TQFT, we interpret the factorization of CFT states in terms of path integral processes that split and join the Hilbert spaces of circles and intervals. More abstractly, these processes are cobordisms of an extended CFT which are defined purely in terms of the OPE data. In addition to the usual sewing axioms, we impose an entanglement boundary condition that is satisfied by the vacuum Ishibashi state. This choice of entanglement bou…
