Gauge/gravity duality relates an AdS black hole with uniform boost with a boosted strongly-coupled CFT at finite temperature. We study the perturbative change in holographic entanglement entropy for strip sub-region in such gravity solutions up to third order and try to formulate a first law of entanglement thermodynamics including higher order corrections. The first law receives important contribution from an entanglement chemical potential in presence of boost. We find that suitable modifications to the entanglement temperature and entanglement chemical potential are required to account for higher order corrections. The results can be extended to non-conformal cases and AdS plane wave background.
We study the effects of asymmetry in entanglement thermodynamics of the CFT subsystems. It is found that `boosted' $p$-branes backgrounds give rise to the first law of the entanglement thermodynamics where the CFT pressure plays decisive role in the entanglement. Two different strip like subsystems, one parallel to the boost and the other perpendicular, are studied in the perturbative regime, where $T_{thermal}\ll T_E$. We also discuss the AdS-wave backgrounds where some universal bounds can be obtained.
In this paper, we have studied the holographic subregion complexity for boosted black brane for strip like subsystem. The holographic subregion complexity has been computed for a subsystem chosen along and perpendicular to the boost direction. We have observed that there is an asymmetry in the result due to the boost parameter which can be attributed to the asymmetry in the holographic entanglement entropy. The Fisher information metric and the fidelity susceptibility have also been computed using bulk dual prescriptions. It is observed that the two metrics computed holographically are not rel…
Certain type II string non-threshold BPS bound states are shown to be related to non-static backgrounds in 11-dimensional theory. The 11-d counterpart of the bound state of NS-NS and R-R type IIB strings wound around a circle is a pure gravitational wave propagating along a generic cycle of 2-torus. The extremal (q_1,q_2) string with non-vanishing momentum along the circle (or infinitely boosted black string) corresponds in D=11 to a 2-brane wrapped around 2-torus with momentum flow along the (q_1,q_2) cycle. Applying duality transformations to the string-string solution we find type IIA backg…
We study the spacetimes of the near-horizon regions in D3-brane, M2-brane and M5-brane configurations, in cases where there is a pp-wave propagating along a direction in the world-volume. While non-extremal configurations of this kind locally have the same Carter-Novotny-Horsky-type metrics as those without the wave, taking the BPS limit results instead in Kaigorodov-type metrics, which are homogeneous, but preserve 1/4 of the supersymmetry, and have global and local structures that are quite different from the corresponding anti-de Sitter spacetimes associated with solutions where there is no…
We extend our earlier study of special double limits of `boosted' $AdS_5$ black hole solutions to include all black D$p$-branes of type II strings. We find that Lifshitz solutions can be obtained in generality, with varied dynamical exponents, by employing these limits. We then study such double limits for `boosted' D$p$-brane bubble solutions and find that the resulting non-relativistic solutions instead describe Schrödinger like spacetimes, having varied dynamical exponents. We get a simple map between these Lifshitz & Schrödinger solutions and a relationship between two types of dynamical e…
In this paper, we study various mixed state information theoretic quantities for a boosted black brane geometry. We have considered two setups, namely, a strip-like subsystem taken parallel and perpendicular to the direction of the boost. The quantities we calculate are the entanglement wedge cross-section, mutual information, entanglement negativity, and purification complexity. In the subsequent analysis, we have incorporated the thin-strip approximation and computed the leading order change (over pure AdS) in the concerned information theoretic quantities due to the boost parameter. We also…
We construct Nernst brane solutions, that is black branes with zero entropy density in the extremal limit, of FI-gauged minimal five-dimensional supergravity coupled to an arbitrary number of vector multiplets. While the scalars take specific constant values and dynamically determine the value of the cosmological constant in terms of the FI-parameters, the metric takes the form of a boosted AdS Schwarzschild black brane. This metric can be brought to the Carter-Novotny-Horsky form that has previously been observed to occur in certain limits of boosted D3-branes. By dimensional reduction to fou…
Deriving the gravitational field of the high-energy objects is an important theme because the black holes might be produced in particle collisions in the brane world scenario. In this paper, we develop a method for boosting the metric of the stationary objects and taking the lightlike limit in higher-dimensional spacetimes, using the Kerr black hole as one example. We analytically construct the metric of lightlike Kerr black holes and find that this method contains no ambiguity in contrast to the four-dimensional case. We discuss the possible implications of our results in the brane world cont…
In this paper we generalize the construction of locally boosted black brane space time to higher derivative gravities. We consider the Gauss-Bonnet term (with coefficient $α'$) as a toy example. We find the solution to the $α'$ corrected Einstein equations to first order in the boundary derivative expansion. This allows us to find the $α'$ corrections to the boundary stress tensor in the presence of the Gauss-Bonnet term in the bulk action. We therefore obtain the ratio of shear viscosity to entropy which agrees with other methods of computation in the literature.
$D$ dimensional neutral black strings wrapped on a circle are related to $(D-1)$ dimensional charged black holes by boosts. We show that the boost has to be performed in the covering space and the boosted coordinate has to be compactified on a circle with a Lorentz contracted radius. Using this fact we show that the transition between Schwarzschild black holes to black p-branes observed recently in M theory is the well-known black hole- black string transition viewed in a boosted frame. In a similar way the correspondence point where an excited string state goes over to a neutral black hole is…
Five dimensional neutral rotating black rings are described from a Randall-Sundrum brane world perspective in the bulk black string framework. To this end we consider a rotating black string extension of a five dimensional black ring into the bulk of a six dimensional Randall-Sundrum brane world with a single four brane. The bulk solution intercepts the four brane in a five dimensional black ring with the usual curvature singularity on the brane. The bulk geodesics restricted to the plane of rotation of the black ring are constructed and their projections on the four brane match with the usual…
In these lectures we review the properties of a boosted and rotated boundary state and of a boundary state with an abelian gauge field deriving from it the Dirac-Born-Infeld action and a newly constructed class of classical solutions. We also review the construction of the boundary state for the stable non-BPS state of type I theory corresponding to the perturbative state present at the first excited level of the SO(32) heterotic string and transforming according to the spinor representation of SO(32) (Lectures presented at the YITP Workshop on ``Developments in Superstring and M-theory'', Kyo…
We study special vanishing horizon limit of `boosted' black D3-branes having a compact light-cone direction. The type IIB solution obtained by taking such a zero temperature limit is found to describe a nonrelativistic system with dynamical exponent 3. We discuss about such limits in M2-branes case also.
We study the Euler numbers and the entropies of the non-extremal intersecting D-branes in ten-dimensions. We use the surface gravity to constrain the compactification radii. We correctly obtain the integer valued Euler numbers for these radii. Moreover, the entropies are found to be invariant under the T-duality transformation. In the extremal limit, we obtain the finite entropies only for two intersecting D-branes. We observe that these entropies are proportional to the product of the charges of each D-brane. We further study the entropies of the boosted metrics. We find that their entropies …
We obtain two new classes of magnetic brane solutions in third order Lovelock gravity. The first class of solutions yields an $(n+1)$-dimensional spacetime with a longitudinal magnetic field generated by a static source. We generalize this class of solutions to the case of spinning magnetic branes with one or more rotation parameters. These solutions have no curvature singularity and no horizons, but have a conic geometry. For the spinning brane, when one or more rotation parameters are nonzero, the brane has a net electric charge which is proportional to the magnitude of the rotation paramete…
We study the large N limit of matrix models of M5-branes, or (2,0) six-dimensional superconformal field theories, by making use of the Bulk/Boundary correspondence. Our emphasis is on the relation between the near-horizon limit of branes and the light-like limit of M-theory. In particular we discuss a conformal symmetry in the D0 + D4 system, and interpret it as a conformal symmetry in the discrete light-cone formulation of M5-branes. We also compute two-point functions of scalars by applying the conjecture for the AdS/CFT correspondence to the near-horizon geometry of boosted M5-branes. We fi…
We analyze string production in the background of a Schwarzschild black hole, after developing first quantized methods which capture string-theoretic nonadiabatic effects which can exceed naive extrapolations of effective field theory. Late-time infalling observers are strongly boosted in the near horizon region relative to early observers and formation matter. In the presence of large boosts in flat spacetime, known string and D-brane scattering processes exhibit enhanced string production, even for large impact parameter. This suggests the possibility that the nonadiabatic dynamics required …
This is an introduction to the properties of D-branes, topological defects in string theory on which string endpoints can live. D-branes provide a simple description of various nonperturbative objects required by string duality, and give new insight into the quantum mechanics of black holes and the nature of spacetime at the shortest distances. The first two thirds of these lectures closely follow the earlier ITP lectures hep-th/9602052, written with S. Chaudhuri and C. Johnson. The final third includes more extensive applications to string duality.
In certain circumstances when two branes pass through each other a third brane is produced stretching between them. We explain this phenomenon by the use of chains of dualities and the inflow of charge that is required for the absence of chiral gauge anomalies when pairs of D-branes intersect.
Based on a gas picture of D0-brane partons, it is shown that the entropy, as well as the geometric size of an infinitely boosted Schwarzschild black hole, can be accounted for in matrix theory by interactions involving spins, or interactions involving more than two bodies simultaneously.
We construct asymptotically AdS_5 solutions to 5-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell theory with Chern-Simons term which are dual to 4-dimensional gauge theories, including N=4 SYM theory, in the presence of a constant background magnetic field B and a uniform electric charge density ρ. For the solutions corresponding to supersymmetric gauge theories, we find numerically that a small magnetic field causes a drastic decrease in the entropy at low temperatures. The near-horizon AdS_2 \times R^3 geometry of the purely electrically charged brane thus appears to be unstable under the addition of a small m…
We generalize the quasilocal definition of the stress energy tensor of Einstein gravity to the case of third order Lovelock gravity, by introducing the surface terms that make the action well-defined. We also introduce the boundary counterterm that removes the divergences of the action and the conserved quantities of the solutions of third order Lovelock gravity with zero curvature boundary at constant $t$ and $r$. Then, we compute the charged rotating solutions of this theory in $n+1$ dimensions with a complete set of allowed rotation parameters. These charged rotating solutions present black…
In this paper we use the effective blackfold description of branes to extend the study of the thermal BIon, a D-brane and parallel anti-D-brane connected by a wormhole with F-string charge in hot flat space, by introducing a radial boost along the brane. The boosted system behaves qualitatively differently from both the extremal and the thermal BIon considered previously. Interestingly, we are able to formulate a first law of thermodynamics for the system as a whole, despite the fact that it is not a stationary blackfold. In particular, the global temperature is given by the rest frame tempera…
The partition function in Matrix theory is constructed by Euclidean path integral method. The D0-branes, which move around in the finite region with a typical size of Schwarzschild radius, are chosen as the background. The mass and entropy of the system obtained from the partition function contain the parameters of the background. After averaging the mass and entropy over the parameters, we find that they match the properties of 11D Schwarzschild black holes. The period $\b$ of Euclidean time can be identified with the reciprocal of the boosted Hawking temperature. The entropy $S$ is shown to …
The geometry of spinning codimension-two branes in AdS spacetime is analyzed in three and higher dimensions. The construction of non-extremal solutions is based on identifications in the covering of AdS space by isometries that have fixed points. The discussion focuses on the cases where the parameters of spinning states can be related to the velocity of a boosted static codimension-two brane. The resulting configuration describes a single spinning brane, or a set of intersecting branes, each one produced by an independent identification. The nature of the singularity is also examined, establi…
We propose a mechanism for mediating supersymmetry breaking in Type I string constructions. The basic set-up consists of a system of three D-branes: two parallel D-branes, a matter D-brane and a source D-brane, with supersymmetry breaking communicated via a third D-brane, the mediating D-brane, which intersects both of the parallel D-branes. We discuss an example in which the first and second family matter fields correspond to open strings living on the intersection of the matter D-brane and mediating D-brane, while the gauge fields, Higgs doublets and third family matter fields correspond to …
We study the quasinormal modes of the massless scalar field of charged black holes embedded in the Randal-Sundrum brane world using the third order WKB approximation. We consider the effects of the electromagnetic and tidal charges on quasinormal frequencies spectrum for charged black hole black holes as well as the effect of the thickness of the bulk.
In this paper we investigate open string pair production effects near hyperbolic black holes in AdS$_5$. We study the classical dynamics of D3 probe branes in this background and their quantum tunneling rate across the horizon from the inside using a method similar to that of Kraus, Parikh and Wilczek. The hyperbolic black holes can decay through these tunneling events and their lifetime is estimated. The radiated branes move towards the boundary and do not bounce back. Their world-lines do not intersect directly and they do not hit the singularity either, providing a clean scenario for studyi…
We derive the low-energy effective theory of gravity for a generalized Randall-Sundrum scenario, allowing for a third self-gravitating brane to live in the 5D bulk spacetime. At zero order the 5D spacetime is composed of two slices of anti-de Sitter spacetime, each with a different curvature scale, and the 5D Weyl tensor vanishes. Two boundary branes are at the fixed points of the orbifold whereas the third brane is free to move in the bulk. At first order, the third brane breaks the otherwise continuous evolution of the projection of the Weyl tensor normal to the branes. We derive a junction …

Considering both the nonlinear invariant terms constructed by the electromagnetic field and the Riemann tensor in gravity action, we obtain a new class of $(n+1)$-dimensional magnetic brane solutions in third order Lovelock-Born-Infeld gravity. This class of solutions yields a spacetime with a longitudinal nonlinear magnetic field generated by a static source. These solutions have no curvature singularity and no horizons but have a conic geometry with a deficit angle $δ$. We find that, as the Born-Infeld parameter decreases, which is a measure of the increase of the nonlinearity of the electro…
By performing a derivative expansion on a class of boosted Born-Infeld-AdS_5 black branes, we study the hydrodynamics of the dual field theory - in the spirit of AdS/CFT correspondence. We determine the fluid dynamical stress-energy tensor to first order, and find that the ratio of the shear viscosity to entropy density conforms to the universal value of $1/4π$ to all orders of the inverse of the Born-Infeld parameter.
We investigate the four dimensional gravitational theories which admit homogeneous but anisotropic black brane solutions in asymptotically AdS space-time. The gravitational theories we consider are 1) Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory, and 2) Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton-axion theory with SL(2,R) symmetry. We obtain the solutions both analytically and numerically. Analytical solutions are obtained by perturbation from the isotropic solutions. Our solutions approach singular behavior at the horizon in the extremal limit but in non-extremal case, they are smooth everywhere. We also discuss how the thi…
We calculate the ratio of shear viscosity to entropy density for charged black branes in third order Lovelock theory. For chargeless black branes, the result turns out to be consistent with the prediction made in $\rm arXiv:0808.3498[\rm hep-th] $. We find that, the third order Lovelock gravity term does not contribute to causality violation unlike the Gauss-Bonnet term. The stability of the black brane again requires the value of the Lovelock coupling constant to be bounded by 1/4 in the infinite dimensionality limit.

We consider, in five dimensions, the effective action from heterotic string which includes quantum gravity corrections up to (a')^2. The expansion, in the string frame, is in terms of |a'R|, where R is the scalar curvature and uses the third order Euler density, next to the Gauss-Bonnet term. For a positive tension brane and infinite extra dimension, the logarithmic class of solutions is less dependent from fine-tuning problems than in previous formulations. More importantly, the model suggests that in the full non-perturbative formulation, the string scale can be much lower than the effective…
In this work, we investigate the thermodynamics of black $p$-branes (BB) in the context of Gravity's Rainbow. We investigate this using rainbow functions that have been motivated from loop quantum gravity and $κ$-Minkowski noncommutative spacetime. Then for the sake of comparison, we examine a couple of other rainbow functions that have also appeared in the literature. We show that, for consistency, Gravity's Rainbow imposes a constraint on the minimum mass of the BB, a constraint that we interpret here as implying the existence of a black $p$-brane remnant. This interpretation is supported by…
We present a generalization of the infinitesimal gauge transformation for nonabelian fields on the stack of branes up to the third order in $Φ$. We test the gauge invariance of the action up to the fifth order in $Φ$ for $D$-instantons. This substantiates the Myers formula for the Chern-Simons term in action, which describes interaction with the RR fields of $N$ coincident $\Dp$ branes.
A fourth generation of Standard Model (SM) fermions is usually considered unlikely due to constraints from direct searches, electroweak precision measurements, and perturbative unitarity. We show that fermion mass textures consistent with all constraints may be obtained naturally in a model with four generations constructed from intersecting D6 branes on a T^6/(Z_2 x Z_2) orientifold. The Yukawa matrices of the model are rank 2, so that only the third- and fourth-generation fermions obtain masses at the trilinear level. The first two generations obtain masses via higher-order couplings and are…

We develop the non commutative Chern-Simons gauge model analysis modeling the description of the hierarchical states of fractional quantum Hall fluids. For a generic level $n$ of the hierarchy, we show that the order parameter matrix $K_{ab}$ is given by $ θ^{-2}Tr(τ_a τ_b)$, where $\{τ_a, 1\leq a \leq n \}$ define a specific set of $n\times n$ matrices depending on the parameter $θ$ and the levels $l_a$ of the CS effective field theory. Our analysis predicts the existence of a third order tensor of order parameters $C_{abc}$ induced by the external magnetic field. It is shown that the $C_{abc…
We extend our earlier work, regarding the perturbative stability of string configurations used for computing the interaction potential of heavy quarks within the gauge/gravity correspondence, to cover a more general class of gravity duals. We provide results, mostly based on analytic methods and corroborated by numerical calculations, which apply to strings in a general class of backgrounds that encompass boosted, spinning and marginally-deformed D3-brane backgrounds. For the case of spinning branes we demonstrate in a few examples that perturbative stability of strings requires strong conditi…
We consider gravity mediated supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking in 5D spacetime with two 4D branes B1 and B2 separated in the extra dimension. Using an off-shell 5D supergravity (SUGRA) formalism, we argue that the SUSY breaking scales could be non-universal even at the fundamental scale in a brane world setting, since SUSY breaking effects could be effectively localized. As an application, we suggest a model in which the two light chiral MSSM generations reside on B1, while the third generation is located on B2, and the Higgs multiplets as well as gravity and gauge multiplets reside in the bulk. F…
We investigate the thermodynamics of Lovelock-Lifshitz black branes. We begin by introducing the finite action of third order Lovelock gravity in the presence of a massive vector field for a flat boundary, and use it to compute the energy density of these black branes. Using the field equations, we find a conserved quantity along the $r$ coordinate that relates the metric parameters at the horizon and at infinity. Remarkably, though the subleading large-$r$ behavior of Lovelock-Lifshitz black branes differs substantively from their Einsteinian Lifshitz counterparts, we find that the relationsh…
\small The SL$(2,R)/U(1)$ coset model, with $U(1)$ an element of the third conjugacy class of $SL(2,R)$ subgroups, is considered. The resulting theory is seen to collapse to a one dimensional field theory of Liouville. Then the 2 dimensional black hole $SL(2,R)/U(1)$, with $U(1)$ a non-compact subgroup boosted by a Lorentz transformation, is considered. In the limit of high boost, the resulting black hole is found to tend to the Liouville field coupled to $a\ C=1$ matter field. The limit of the vertex operators of the 2 dimensional black hole also tend to those of the $C=1$ two dimensional gra…
We evaluate the entanglement entropy of strips for boosted D3-black-branes compactified along the lightcone coordinate. The bulk theory describes $3$-dimensional $a = 3$ $θ = 1$, Lifshitz theory on the boundary. The area of small strips is evaluated perturbatively up to second order, where the leading term has a logarithmic dependence on strip width l, whereas entropy of the excitations is found to be proportional to $l^4$. The entanglement temperature falls off as $\frac{1}{l^3}$ on expected lines. The size of the subsystem has to be bigger than the typical Lifshitz scale in the theory. At se…
Recently we proposed that K fields, that is, fields with a non-standard kinetic term, may provide a mechanism for the generation of thick branes, based on the following observations. Firstly, K field theories allow for soliton solutions with compact support, i.e., compactons. Compactons in 1+1 dimensions may give rise to topological defects of the domain wall type and with finite thickness in higher dimensions. Secondly, propagation of linear perturbations is confined inside the compacton domain wall. Further, these linear perturbations inside the topological defect are of the standard type, i…
I review the salient features of three classes of open-string models with broken supersymmetry. These suffice to exhibit, in relatively simple settings, the two phenomena of ``brane supersymmetry'' and ``brane supersymmetry breaking''. In the first class of models, to lowest order supersymmetry is broken both in the closed and in the open sectors. In the second class of models, to lowest order supersymmetry is broken in the closed sector, but is {\it exact} in the open sector, at least for the low-lying modes, and often for entire towers of string excitations. Finally, in the third class of mo…
This course provides a self contained introduction to the general theory of relativistic brane models, of the category that includes point particle, string, and membrane representations for phenomena that can be considered as being confined to a worldsheet of the corresponding dimension (respectively one, two, and three) in a thin limit approximation. The first part of the course is concerned with purely kinematic aspects: it is shown how, to second differential order, the geometry (and in particular the inner and outer curvature) of a brane worldsheet of arbitrary dimension is describable in …
In this thesis, two different aspects of asymptotically charged rotating black branes in various dimensions are studied. In the first part, the thermodynamics of these spacetimes is investigated, while in the second part the no hair theorem for these spacetimes in four dimensions is considered. In part I, first, the Euclidean actions of a d-dimensional charged rotating black brane are computed through the use of the counterterms renormalization method both in the canonical and the grand-canonical ensemble, and it is shown that the logarithmic divergencies associated to the Weyl anomalies and m…
We study the tidal deformations of various known black hole and wormhole solutions in a simple context of warped compactification -- Randall-Sundrum theory in which the four-dimensional spacetime geometry is that of a brane embedded in five-dimensional Anti-de Sitter spacetime. The linearized gravitational perturbation theory generically reduces to either an inhomogeneous second-order ODE or a homogeneous third-order ODE of which indicial roots associated with an expansion about asymptotic infinity can be related to Tidal Love Numbers. We describe various tidal-deformed metrics, classify their…
We discuss a general fourth-order theory of gravity on the brane. In general, the formulation of the junction conditions (except for Euler characteristics such as Gauss-Bonnet term) leads to the higher powers of the delta function and requires regularization. We suggest the way to avoid such a problem by imposing the metric and its first derivative to be regular at the brane, while the second derivative to have a kink, the third derivative of the metric to have a step function discontinuity, and no sooner as the fourth derivative of the metric to give the delta function contribution to the fie…
In the spirit of the AdS/CFT correspondence, we investigate the hydrodynamics of the dual conformal field in the Gauss-Bonnet gravity. By considering the parameters of the boosted black brane in the Gauss-Bonnet gravity as functions of boundary coordinates, and then solving the corresponding correction terms, we calculate the first order stress-energy tensor of the dual conformal field. From this first order stress-energy tensor, we also obtain the shear viscosity and entropy density. And these results are consistent with those of some previous works from the effective coupling of gravitons.
The sound mode hydrodynamic dispersion relation is computed up to order $q^3$ for a class of gravitational duals which includes both Schwarzschild $AdS$ and Dp-Brane metrics. The implications for second order transport coefficients are examined within the context of Israel-Stewart theory. These sound mode results are compared with previously known results for the shear mode. This comparison allows one to determine the third order hydrodynamic contributions to the shear mode for the class of metrics considered here.
Braneworld models with variable tension are investigated, and the corrections on the black string horizon along the extra dimension are provided. Such corrections are encrypted in additional terms involving the covariant derivatives of the variable tension on the brane, providing profound consequences concerning the black string horizon variation along the extra dimension, near the brane. The black string horizon behavior is shown to be drastically modified by the terms corrected by the brane variable tension. In particular, a model motivated by the phenomenological interesting case regarding …
We discuss semiclassical quantization of closed superstrings in AdS_5 x S^5. We consider two basic examples: point-like string boosted along large circle of S^5 and folded string rotating in AdS_5. In the first case we clarify the general structure of the sigma model perturbation theory for the energy of string states beyond the leading 1-loop order (related to the plane-wave limit). In the second case we argue that the large spin limit of the expression for the ground-state energy (i.e. for the dimension of the corresponding minimal twist gauge theory operator) has the form S + f(λ) \ln S to …
