The problems we address in this paper are the spectral theory and the inverse problems associated with Laplacians on non-compact Riemannian manifolds and more general manifolds admitting conic singularities. In particular, we study the inverse scattering problem where one observes the asymptotic behavior of the solutions of the Helmholtz equation on the manifold. These observations are analogous to Heisenberg's scattering matrix in quantum mechanics. We then show that the knowledge of the scattering matrix determines the topology and the metric of the manifold.
In the paper we develop a unified approach to consider scattering problems on manifolds that can have very different type of infinities, such as regular hyperbolic ends, cusps, and cylindrical ends related to models encountered in the study of wave guides. We allow the manifold to have also conic singularities. Due to this, the studied class of manifolds include orbifolds. Such non-smooth structures arise in the study of the stability of inverse problems and of the geometrical collapse.
We study inverse boundary problems for the advection diffusion equation on an admissible manifold, i.e. a compact Riemannian manifold with boundary of dimension $\ge 3$, which is conformally embedded in a product of the Euclidean real line and a simple manifold. We prove the unique identifiability of the advection term of class $H^1\cap L^\infty$ and of class $H^{2/3}\cap C^{0,1/3}$ from the knowledge of the associated Dirichlet-to-Neumann map on the boundary of the manifold. This seems to be the first global identifiability result for possibly discontinuous advection terms.
We study inverse boundary problems for magnetic Schrödinger operators on a compact Riemannian manifold with boundary of dimension $\ge 3$. In the first part of the paper we are concerned with the case of admissible geometries, i.e. compact Riemannian manifolds with boundary which are conformally embedded in a product of the Euclidean line and a simple manifold. We show that the knowledge of the Cauchy data on the boundary of the manifold for the magnetic Schrödinger operator with $L^\infty$ magnetic and electric potentials, determines the magnetic field and electric potential uniquely. In the …
In this paper, we study the amount of information contained in the Steklov spectrum of some compact manifolds with connected boundary equipped with a warped product metric. Examples of such manifolds can be thought of as deformed balls in R^d. We first prove that the Steklov spectrum determines uniquely the warping function of the metric. We show in fact that the approximate knowledge (in a given precise sense) of the Steklov spectrum is enough to determine uniquely the warping function in a neighbourhood of the boundary. Second, we provide stability estimates of log-type on the warping functi…
In this paper, we study an inverse scattering problem at fixed energy on three-dimensional asymptotically hyperbolic St{ä}ckel manifolds having the topology of toric cylinders and satisfying the Robertson condition. On these manifolds the Helmholtz equation can be separated into a system of a radial ODE and two angular ODEs. We can thus decompose the full scattering operator onto generalized harmonics and the resulting partial scattering matrices consist in a countable set of $2 \times 2$ matrices whose coefficients are the so-called transmission and reflection coefficients. It is shown that t…
In this paper, we consider the inverse hessian quotient curvature flow with star-shaped initial hypersurface in anti-de Sitter-Schwarzschild manifold. We prove that the solution exists for all time, and the second fundamental form converges to identity exponentially fast.
We consider an inverse boundary value problem for a semilinear wave equation on a time-dependent Lorentzian manifold with time-like boundary. The time-dependent coefficients of the nonlinear terms can be recovered in the interior from the knowledge of the Neumann-to-Dirichlet map. Either distorted plane waves or Gaussian beams can be used to derive uniqueness.
We show that the knowledge of the Dirichlet--to--Neumann map for a nonlinear magnetic Schrödinger operator on the boundary of a compact complex manifold, equipped with a Kähler metric and admitting sufficiently many global holomorphic functions, determines the nonlinear magnetic and electric potentials uniquely.
We consider the problem of recovering a nonlinear potential function in a nonlinear Schrödinger equation on transversally anisotropic manifolds from the linearized Dirichlet-to-Neumann map at a large wavenumber. By calibrating the complex geometric optics (CGO) solutions according to the wavenumber, we prove the increasing stability of recovering the coefficient of a cubic term as the wavenumber becomes large.
We consider the inverse problem of recovering the magnetic and potential term of a magnetic Schrödinger operator on certain compact Riemannian manifolds with boundary from partial Dirichlet and Neumann data on suitable subsets of the boundary. The uniqueness proof relies on proving a suitable Carleman estimate for functions which vanish only on a part of boundary and constructing complex geometric optics solutions which vanish on a part of the boundary.
We consider inverse problems in space-time $(M, g)$, a $4$-dimensional Lorentzian manifold. For semilinear wave equations $\square_g u + H(x, u) = f$, where $\square_g$ denotes the usual Laplace-Beltrami operator, we prove that the source-to-solution map $L: f \rightarrow u|_V$, where $V$ is a neighborhood of a time-like geodesic $μ$, determines the topological, differentiable structure and the conformal class of the metric of the space-time in the maximal set where waves can propagate from $μ$ and return back. Moreover, on a given space-time $(M, g)$, the source-to-solution map determines som…
We study inverse boundary problems for first order perturbations of the biharmonic operator on a conformally transversally anisotropic Riemannian manifold of dimension $n \ge 3$. We show that a continuous first order perturbation can be determined uniquely from the knowledge of the set of the Cauchy data on the boundary of the manifold provided that the geodesic $X$-ray transform on the transversal manifold is injective.
We survey recent results on inverse problems for geodesic X-ray transforms and other linear and non-linear geometric inverse problems for Riemannian metrics, connections and Higgs fields defined on manifolds with boundary.
On compact Riemannian manifolds, we prove a decomposition theorem for arbitrarily bounded energy sequence of solutions of a singular elliptic equation.
We consider the inverse problem to determine a smooth compact Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ from a restriction of the source-to-solution operator, $Λ_{\mathcal{S,R}}$, for the wave equation on the manifold. Here, $\mathcal{S}$ and $\mathcal{R}$ are open sets on $M$, and $Λ_{\mathcal{S,R}}$ represents the measurements of waves produced by smooth sources supported on $\mathcal{S}$ and observed on $\mathcal{R}$. We emphasise that $\overline{\mathcal{S}}$ and $\overline{\mathcal{R}}$ could be disjoint. We demonstrate that $Λ_{\mathcal{S,R}}$ determines the manifold $(M,g)$ uniquely under the followi…
This paper studies the existence of extremal problems for the Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev inequalities on compact manifolds without boundary via Concentration-Compactness principle.
On a compact Riemannian manifold, we prove the existence of multiple solutions for an elliptic equation with critical Sobolev growth and critical Hardy potential.
For a class of Riemannian manifolds with boundary that includes all negatively curved manifolds with strictly convex boundary, we establish Hölder type stability estimates in the geometric inverse problem of determining the electric potential or the conformal factor from the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map associated with the Schrödinger equation and the wave equation. The novelty in this result lies in the fact that we allow some geodesics to be trapped inside the manifold and have infinite length.
