In November 2019, MAXI detected an X-ray outburst from the known Be X-ray binary system RX J0209.6-7427 located in the outer wing of the Small Magellanic Cloud. We followed the outburst of the system with NICER which led to the discovery of X-ray pulsations with a period of 9.3 s. We analyzed simultaneous X-ray data obtained with NuSTAR and NICER allowing us to characterize the spectrum and provide an accurate estimate of its bolometric luminosity. During the outburst the maximum broadband X-ray luminosity of the system reached $1-2\times10^{39}$ erg/s, thus exceeding by about one order of magnitude the Eddington limit for a typical 1.4 $M_{\odot}$ mass neutron star (NS). Monitoring observations with Fermi/GBM and NICER allowed us to study the spin evolution of the NS and compare it with standard accretion torque models. We found that the NS magnetic field should be of the order of $3\times10^{12}$ G. We conclude that RX J0209.6-7427 exhibited one of the brightest outbursts observed from a Be X-ray binary pulsar in the Magellanic Clouds, reaching similar luminosity level to the 2016 outburst of SMC X-3. Despite the super-Eddington luminosity of RX J0209.6-7427, the NS appears to have only a moderate magnetic field strength.
In this paper we present a coherent timing analysis of the 401 Hz pulsations of the accreting millisecond X-ray pulsar SAX J1808.4-3658 during its 2019 outburst. Using observations collected with the Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER), we establish the pulsar spin frequency and orbital phase during its latest epoch. We find that the 2019 outburst shows a pronounced evolution in pulse phase over the course of the outburst. These phase shifts are found to correlate with the source flux, and are interpreted in terms of hot-spot drift on the stellar surface, driven by changes in th…
Context: An impulsive increase in luminosity by one half or more of the Eddington value will lead to ejection of all optically thin plasma from Keplerian orbits around the radiating star, if gravity is Newtonian and the Poynting-Robertson drag is neglected. Radiation drag may bring some particles down to the stellar surface. On the other hand, general relativistic calculations show that gravity may be balanced by a sufficiently intense radiation field at a certain distance from the star. Aims: We investigate the motion of test particles around highly luminous stars to determine conditions unde…
The bright black hole X-ray binary 4U 1543-47 during 2021 outburst. A clear state transition from super-Eddington to sub-Eddington accretion revealed by Insight-HXMT
The Be X-ray pulsar, SMC X-3 underwent a giant outburst from 2016 August to 2017 March, which was monitored with the Swift satellite. During the outburst, its broadband flux increased dramatically, and the unabsorbed X-ray luminosity reached an extreme value of $\sim 10^{39}$ erg/s around August 24. Using the Swift/XRT data, we measure the observed pulse frequency of the neutron star to compute the orbital parameters of the binary system. After applying the orbital corrections to Swift observations, we find that the spin frequency increases steadily from 128.02 mHz on August 10 and approach to…
The black-hole binary V404 Cyg entered the outburst phase in June 2015 after 26 years of X-ray quiescence, and with its behaviour broke the outburst evolution pattern typical of most black-hole binaries. We observed the entire outburst with the Swift satellite and performed time-resolved spectroscopy of its most active phase, obtaining over a thousand spectra with exposures from tens to hundreds of seconds. All the spectra can be fitted with an absorbed power law model, which most of the time required the presence of a partial covering. A blue-shifted iron-Kalpha line appears in 10% of the spe…
On 2016 July 30 (MJD 57599), observations of the Small Magellanic Cloud by Swift/XRT found an increase in X-ray counts coming from a position consistent with the Be/X-ray binary pulsar SMC X-3. Follow-up observations on 2016 August 3 (MJD 57603) and 2016 August 10 (MJD 57610) revealed a rapidly increasing count rate and confirmed the onset of a new X-ray outburst from the system. Further monitoring by Swift began to uncover the enormity of the outburst, which peaked at 1.2 x 10^39 erg/s on 2016 August 25 (MJD 57625). The system then began a gradual decline in flux that was still continuing ove…
The Be X-ray pulsar SMC X-3 underwent an extra long and ultraluminous giant outburst from 2016 August to 2017 March. The peak X-ray luminosity is up to $\sim 10^{39}$ erg/s, suggesting a mildly super-Eddington accretion onto the strongly magnetized neutron star. It therefore bridges the gap between the Galactic Be/X-ray binaries ($L_{\rm X}^{\rm peak} \leq 10^{38}$ erg/s) and the ultraluminous X-ray pulsars ($L_{\rm X}^{\rm peak} \geq 10^{40}$ erg/s) found in nearby galaxies. A number of observations were carried out to observe the outburst. In this paper, we perform a comprehensive phase-reso…

Physical models of X-ray binary outbursts can aid in understanding the origin of 'changing-look' active galactic nuclei (AGN), if we can establish that these two black hole accretion phenomena are analogous. Previously, studies of the correlation between the UV-to-X-ray spectral index alpha_OX and Eddington ratio using single-epoch observations of changing-look AGN samples have revealed possible similarities to the spectral evolution of outbursting X-ray binaries. However, direct comparisons using multi-epoch UV/X-ray light curves of individual changing-look AGN undergoing dramatic changes in …
We present our Swift monitoring campaign of the slowly rotating neutron star Be/X-ray transient GX 304-1 (spin period of ~275 s) when the source was not in outburst. We found that between its type-I outbursts the source recurrently exhibits a slowly decaying low-luminosity state (with luminosities of 10^(34-35) erg/s). This behaviour is very similar to what has been observed for another slowly rotating system, GRO J1008-57. For that source, this low-luminosity state has been explained in terms of accretion from a non-ionised ('cold') accretion disk. Due to the many similarities between both sy…
It is now widely accepted that most ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) are binary systems whose large (above $10^{39}$ erg s$^{-1}$) apparent luminosities are explained by super-Eddington accretion onto a stellar-mass compact object. Many of the ULXs, especially those containing magnetized neutron stars, are highly variable; some exhibit transient behaviour. Large luminosities might imply large accretion discs that could be therefore prone to the thermal-viscous instability known to drive outbursts of dwarf novae and low-mass X-ray binary transient sources. The aim of this paper is to extend a…
We present a model for a super-Eddington accretion disc around a magnetized neutron star taking into account advection of heat and the mass loss by the wind. The model is semi-analytical and predicts radial profiles of all basic physical characteristics of the accretion disc. The magnetospheric radius is found as an eigenvalue of the problem. When the inner disc is in radiation-pressure-dominated regime but does not reach its local Eddington limit, advection is mild, and the radius of the magnetosphere depends weakly on the accretion rate. Once approaching the local Eddington limit, the disc b…
We study the temporal and spectral characteristics of SMC X-3 during its 2016 outburst. To probe accretion onto highly magnetized neutron stars (NSs), at the Eddington limit. We obtained XMM-Newton observations of SMC X-3 and combined them with long-term observations by Swift. We studied the temporal and spectral behavior of the source, and its short- and long-term evolution. We constructed a simple toy-model to gain insight into the complex emission pattern of SMC X-3. We confirm the pulse period of the system, derived by previous works and note that the pulse has a complex, three peaked shap…
M87, the active galaxy at the center of the Virgo cluster, is ideal for studying the interaction of a supermassive black hole (SMBH) with a hot, gas-rich environment. A deep Chandra observation of M87 exhibits an approximately circular shock front (13 kpc radius, in projection) driven by the expansion of the central cavity (filled by the SMBH with relativistic radio-emitting plasma) with projected radius $\sim$1.9 kpc. We combine constraints from X-ray and radio observations of M87 with a shock model to derive the properties of the outburst that created the 13 kpc shock. Principal constraints …
We observed RX J0520.5-6932 in the X-rays and studied the optical light curve of its counterpart to verify it as a Be/X-ray binary. We performed an XMM-Newton anticipated target of opportunity observation in January 2013 during an X-ray outburst of the source in order to search for pulsations and derive its spectral properties. We monitored the source with Swift to follow the evolution of the outburst and to look for further outbursts to verify the regular pattern seen in the optical light curve with a period of ~24.4 d. The XMM-Newton EPIC light curves show coherent X-ray pulsations with a pe…
Two \textit{NuSTAR} observations of the luminous X-ray pulsar LMC X-4 in October and November 2015 captured several bright accretion flares from this source, which has a long history of stable pulse and superorbital behavior. We present a timing analysis of these data in which we detect a rapid pulse turn-on in association with the accretion flares, during which the source reaches super-Eddington luminosities. Pulsations, which are normally seen from this source, are found to only occur for approximately one hour before and during the bright flares. Beyond one hour before and after the flares,…
During its 2005 outburst, GRO J1655-40 was observed at high spectral resolution with the Chandra HETGS, revealing a spectrum rich with blueshifted absorption lines indicative of an accretion disk wind -- apparently too hot, too dense, and too close to the black hole to be driven by radiation pressure or thermal pressure (Miller et al.). But this exotic wind represents just one piece of the puzzle in this outburst, as its presence coincides with an extremely soft and curved X-ray continuum spectrum, remarkable X-ray variability (Uttley & Klein-Wolt), and a bright, unexpected optical/infrared bl…
IGR J18483-0311 is a supergiant fast X-ray transient whose compact object is located in a wide (18.5 d) and eccentric (e~0.4) orbit, which shows sporadic outbursts that reach X-ray luminosities of ~1e36 erg/s. We investigated the timing properties of IGR J18483-0311 and studied the spectra during bright outbursts by fitting physical models based on thermal and bulk Comptonization processes for accreting compact objects. We analysed archival INTEGRAL data collected in the period 2003-2010, focusing on the observations with IGR J18483-0311 in outburst. We searched for pulsations in the INTEGRAL …
Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE)/Proportional Counter Array (PCA) observations of IGR J19294+1816 covering two outburst episodes are reported. The first outburst happened during MJD 54921-54925 (2009 C.E.) and the second one happened during MJD 55499-55507 (2010 C.E.). In both the cases the PCA observations were made during the decay phase of the outburst, with the source exhibiting temporal and spectral evolution with the change in flux. At the bright flux level an absorption feature at 35.5 keV is detected in the spectra which may be attributed to Cyclotron Resonance Scattering Feature cor…
In this study we present a method to estimate posterior distributions for standard accretion torque model parameters and binary orbital parameters for X-ray binaries using a nested sampling algorithm for Bayesian Parameter Estimation. We study the spin evolution of two Be X-ray binary systems in the Magellanic Clouds, RX J0520.5-6932 and RX J0209-7427, during major outbursts, in which they surpassed the Eddington-limit. Moreover, we apply our method to the recently discovered Swift J0243.6+6124; the only known Galactic pulsating ultra-luminous X-ray source. This is an excellent candidate for s…
PSR J1119-6127 is a radio pulsar that behaved magnetar like bursts, and we performed a comprehensive investigation of this pulsar using the archival high-energy observations obtained after its outburst in 2016 July. After the 2016 outburst, specific regions on the neutron star surface were heated up to > 0.3 and > 1 keV from about 0.2 keV. A hard non-thermal spectral component with a photon index < 0.5 related to the magnetospheric emission can be resolved from the NuSTAR spectra above 10 keV. We find that the thermal emitting regions did not cool down and gradually shrank by about (20-35)% fo…
The anti- and positive correlations between X-ray photon index and Eddington-scaled X-ray luminosity were found in decay phase of X-ray binary outbursts and a sample of active galactic nuclei in former works. We further systematically investigate the evolution of X-ray spectral index, along the X-ray flux and Eddington ratio in eight outbursts of four black-hole X-ray binaries, where all selected outbursts have observational data from Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer in both rise and decay phases. In the initial rise phase, the X-ray spectral index is anti-correlated with the flux, and the X-ray sp…
Ground-based optical photometry of the counterparts of High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) has revealed the presence of periodic modulations on timescales of ~0.3-0.5 d. More recent space-based observations Corot and TESS of OB and Be stars have shown that pulsations caused by p and g modes are common in early type stars. We have therefore undertaken a systematic search for variability in the optical counterparts of 23 HMXBs (mostly neutron star systems, but including one black hole, Cyg X-1) using TESS data primarily in 2 min cadence mode. After removing the orbital period modulation in four sys…
Luminosities of ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) are uncomfortably large if compared to the Eddington limit for isotropic accretion onto stellar-mass object. Most often either supercritical accretion onto stellar mass black hole or accretion onto intermediate mass black holes is invoked the high luminosities of ULXs. However, the recent discovery of coherent pulsations from M82 ULX with NuSTAR showed that another scenario implying accretion onto a magnetized neutron star is possible for ULXs. Motivated by this discovery, we re-visited the available XMM-Newton archival observations of several…

We report the evolution of the X-ray pulsations of EXO 2030+375 during its 2021 outburst using the observations from \textit{Insight}-HXMT. Based on the accretion torque model, we study the correlation between the spin frequency derivatives and the luminosity. Pulsations can be detected in the energy band of 1--160 keV. The pulse profile evolves significantly with luminosity during the outburst, leading to that the whole outburst can be divided into several parts with different characteristics. The evolution of the pulse profile reveals the transition between the super-critical (fan-beam domin…
We report here a new result extracted from the Fermi Large Area Telescope observation of the classical nova ASASSN-16ma that exhibits coherent gamma-ray pulsations at 544.84(7) seconds during its outburst in 2016. Considering the number of independent trials, the significance of the evidence is 4.0 sigma, equivalent to a false alarm probability of 5.9e-5. The periodicity was steady during the 4 days of its appearance, indicating its origin as the spinning signal of the white dwarf. Given that the optical and gamma-ray light curves of some shock-powered gamma-ray novae have been recently shown …
We study the 205.9 Hz pulsations of the accreting millisecond X-ray pulsar NGC 6440 X-2 across all outbursts observed with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer over a period of 800 days. We find the pulsations are highly sinusoidal with a fundamental amplitude of 5%-15% rms and a second harmonic that is only occasionally detected with amplitudes of <2% rms. By connecting the orbital phase across multiple outbursts, we obtain an accurate orbital ephemeris for this source and constrain its 57 min orbital period to sub-ms precision. We do not detect an orbital period derivative to an upper limit of $ …

We study the timing properties of XTE J1858+034 using the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) and Burst Alert Telescope onboard Swift during the outburst in October--November 2019. We have investigated for Quasi-Periodic Oscillation (QPO) during the outburst and detected a low-frequency QPO at $\sim$196 mHz with $\sim$6% RMS variability from the NuSTAR observation. The QPO is fitted and explained with the model - power law and a Lorentzian component. We have also studied the variation of QPO frequency with energy. The beat frequency model and Keplerian frequency model both are suita…

An overview of the results of observations for the transient X-ray pulsar 4U 0115+63, a member of a binary system with a Be star, since its discovery to the present day (~40 years) based on data from more than dozen observatories and instruments is presented. A overall light curve and the history of change in the spin frequency of the neutron star over the entire history of its observations, which also includes the results of recent measurements made by the INTEGRAL observatory during the 2004, 2008, and 2011 outbursts, are provided. The source's energy spectra have also been constructed from …
We perform a reflection study on a new observation of the neutron star low-mass X-ray binary Aquila X-1 taken with NuSTAR during the August 2016 outburst and compare with the July 2014 outburst. The source was captured at $\sim32\%\ L_{\mathrm{Edd}}$, which is over four times more luminous than the previous observation during the 2014 outburst. Both observations exhibit a broadened Fe line profile. Through reflection modeling, we determine that the inner disk is truncated $R_{in,\ 2016}=11_{-1}^{+2}\ R_{g}$ (where $R_{g}=GM/c^{2}$) and $R_{in,\ 2014}=14\pm2\ R_{g}$ (errors quoted at the 90% co…
Ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) represent a class of binary systems that are more luminous than any black hole in our Galaxy. The nature of these objects remained unclear for a long time. The most popular models for the ULXs involve either intermediate mass black holes (IMBHs) or stellar-mass black holes accreting at super-Eddington rates. In the last few years our understating of these objects was significantly improved, which made the model of super-Eddington accretion much preferable. Both the X-ray and optical spectra provide evidence for the strong outflows coming from supercritical ac…
We model the intermediate-mass black hole HLX-1, using the Hubble Space Telescope, XMM-Newton and Swift. We quantify the relative contributions of a bluer component, function of X-ray irradiation, and a redder component, constant and likely coming from an old stellar population. We estimate a black hole mass of about (2^{+2}_{-1}) x 10^4 M_{sun}, a spin parameter a/M ~ 0.9 for moderately face-on view, and a peak outburst luminosity of about 0.3 times the Eddington luminosity. We discuss the discrepancy between the characteristic sizes inferred from the short X-ray timescale (R ~ a few 10^{11} …
Transient ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) provide an important link bridging transient low-mass X-ray binaries and ULXs. Here we report the first discovery of both a canonical sub-Eddington outburst and an ultraluminous super-Eddington outburst from an unusual transient ULX, NGC 7793 P9 with a variability factor higher than $10^3$. Its X-ray spectrum switches between the typical high/soft state and the steep power-law state during the canonical outburst. The inner radius of the accretion disk and the disk temperature--luminosity correlation suggest that P9 harbors a stellar-mass black hole …
We review observations of ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs). X-ray spectroscopic and timing studies of ULXs suggest a new accretion state distinct from those seen in Galactic stellar-mass black hole binaries. The detection of coherent pulsations indicates the presence of neutron-star accretors in three ULXs and therefore apparently super-Eddington luminosities. Optical and X-ray line profiles of ULXs and the properties of associated radio and optical nebulae suggest that ULXs produce powerful outflows, also indicative of super-Eddington accretion. We discuss models of super-Eddington accretio…
The metal rich globular cluster RZ 2109 in the massive Virgo elliptical galaxy NGC 4472 (M49) harbours the ultra luminous X-ray source XMMU 122939.7+075333. Previous studies showed that this source varies between bright and faint phases on timescales of just a few hours. Here, we report the discovery of two peculiar X-ray bursting events that last for about 8 and 3.5 hours separated by about 3 days. Such a recurring X-ray burst-like behaviour has never been observed before. We argue that type-I X-ray bursts or super bursts as well as outburst scenarios requiring a young stellar object are high…
{\it NuSTAR} has detected pulsations from the ultraluminous X-ray source X-2 in M82 and archival {\it Chandra} observations have given us a good idea of its duty cycle. The newly discovered pulsar exhibited at least 4 super-Eddington outbursts in the past 15 years but, in its lowest-power state, it radiates just below the Eddington limit and its properties appear to be typical of high-mass X-ray binaries. M82 X-2 has been described as a common neutron star with a 1~TG magnetic field that occasionally accretes above the Eddington rate and as a magnetar-like pulsar with a 10-100~TG magnetic fiel…
We report on the spectral behavior of the first Galactic ultraluminous X-ray pulsar Swift J0243.6+6124 with NuSTAR observations during its 2017-2018 outburst. At sub-Eddington levels, the source spectrum is characterized by three emission components, respectively from the accretion column, the hot spot, and a broad iron line emission region. When the source is above the Eddington limit, the hot spot temperature increases and the spectrum features two more blackbody components. One blackbody component has a radius of 10-20 km and is likely originated from the top of the accretion column. The ot…
We report the detection of coherent pulsations from the ultraluminous X-ray source NGC 7793 P13. The ~0.42s nearly sinusoidal pulsations were initially discovered in broadband X-ray observations using XMM-Newton and NuSTAR taken in 2016. We subsequently also found pulsations in archival XMM-Newton data taken in 2013 and 2014. The significant (>>5 sigma) detection of coherent pulsations demonstrates that the compact object in P13 is a neutron star with an observed peak luminosity of ~1e40 erg/s (assuming isotropy), well above the Eddington limit for a 1.4 M_sun accretor. This makes P13 the seco…
Possible manifestations of accreting magnetars are discussed. It is shown that the four ultra-luminous X-ray pulsars can be understood in the accreting low magnetic field magnetar scenario. The NGC300 ULX1 pulsar may have a higher dipole magnetic field than other sources. General constraint on their mass accretion rate confirmed their super-Eddington nature. Lower limits on their beaming factor are obtained. They do not seem to have strong beaming. The duty cycle of the ULX burst state can also be constrained by their timing observations. ULX pulsars may be in accretion equilibrium in the long…
We present Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer and Swift observations made during the final three weeks of the 2006-2007 outburst of the super-Eddington neutron star (NS) transient XTE J1701-462, as well as Chandra and XMM-Newton observations covering the first ~800 days of the subsequent quiescent phase. The source transitioned quickly from active accretion to quiescence, with the luminosity dropping by over 3 orders of magnitude in ~13 days. The spectra obtained during quiescence exhibit both a thermal component, presumed to originate in emission from the NS surface, and a non-thermal component of u…

We report on the analysis of the AstroSat dataset of the accreting millisecond X-ray pulsar SAX J1808.4-3658, obtained during its 2019 outburst. We found coherent pulsations at $\sim 401$ Hz and an orbital solution consistent with previous studies. The 3-20 keV pulse profile can be well fitted with three harmonically related sinusoidal components with background-corrected fractional amplitude of $\sim 3.5 \%$, $\sim 1.2 \%$ and $\sim 0.37 \%$ for fundamental, second and third harmonic, respectively. Our energy-resolved pulse profile evolution study indicate a strong energy dependence. We also …
Accreting millisecond X-ray pulsars are an important subset of low-mass X-ray binaries in which coherent X-ray pulsations can be observed during occasional, bright outbursts (X-ray luminosity $L_X\sim 10^{36}$ erg s$^{-1}$). These pulsations show that matter is being channeled onto the neutron star's magnetic poles. However, such sources spend most of their time in a low-luminosity, quiescent state ($L_X\lesssim 10^{34}$ erg s$^{-1}$), where the nature of the accretion flow onto the neutron star (if any) is not well understood. Here we report that the millisecond pulsar/low-mass X-ray binary t…
We report the results of AstroSat and NuSTAR observations of the Be/X-ray binary pulsar SXP 15.3 in the Small Magellanic Cloud during its outburst in late 2017, when the source reached a luminosity level of ~ 10^{38} erg s^{-1}, close to the Eddington limit. The unprecedented broadband coverage of the source allowed us to perform timing and spectral analysis between 3 and 80 keV. The pulse profile exhibits a significant energy dependence, and morphs from a double peaked profile to a single broad pulse at energies >15 keV. This can be explained by a spectral hardening during an intensity dip se…
We present results of phase- and time-resolved study of iron spectral features in the emission of the Be/X-ray transient pulsar V0332+53, during its type II outburst in 2004 using archival RXTE/PCA data. Coherent pulsations of both fluorescent iron line at {\approx}6.4 keV and neutral iron K-edge at {\approx}7.1 keV have been detected throughout the entire outburst. The pulsating iron K-edge is reported for the first time for this object. Near the peak of the outburst, the 3-12 keV pulse profile shows two deep, F_max / F_min ~ 2, and narrow dips of nearly identical shape, separated by exactly …
