PSR J1119-6127 is a radio pulsar that behaved magnetar like bursts, and we performed a comprehensive investigation of this pulsar using the archival high-energy observations obtained after its outburst in 2016 July. After the 2016 outburst, specific regions on the neutron star surface were heated up to > 0.3 and > 1 keV from about 0.2 keV. A hard non-thermal spectral component with a photon index < 0.5 related to the magnetospheric emission can be resolved from the NuSTAR spectra above 10 keV. We find that the thermal emitting regions did not cool down and gradually shrank by about (20-35)% four months after the outburst. Hard X-ray pulsations were detected with NuSTAR immediately after the outburst, at 5 sigma confidence level and with a background-subtracted pulsed fraction of (40+-10)%. However, the signal became undetectable after a few days. Using Fermi data, we found that the gamma-ray emission in 0.5-300 GeV was suppressed along with the disappearance of the radio pulsations. This is likely caused by a reconfiguration of the magnetic field. We also discovered that the timing noise evolved dramatically, and the spin-down rate significantly increased after the 2016 glitch. We proposed that post-outburst temporal and spectral behaviors from radio to gamma-ray bands were caused by changes of the magnetosphere structure, pair plasma injection and the shrinking emission sites on the neutron star.
The outburst and spin-down glitch of magnetars are modeled from the magnetospheric point of view. We try to discuss the following four questions: (1) Which pulsar on the period and peirod-derivative diagram are more likely to show magnetar outburst? (2) Which outburst will make the glitch that triggered the outburst to become a spin-down glitch? (3) Can we model the outburst and spin-down glitch in PSR J1119$-$6127 simultaneously? (4) Why the torque variation is delayed compared with the peak of the X-ray luminosity in 1E 1048.1$-$5937 and PSR J1119$-$6127? It is found that both the global and…
Temporal and spectral evolution in X- and gamma-rays of magnetar 1E 1547.0-5408 since its October 2008 outburst: the discovery of a transient hard pulsed component after its January 2009 outburst
We present the results of the systematic study of all magnetar outbursts observed to date, through a reanalysis of data acquired in about 1100 X-ray observations. We track the temporal evolution of the outbursts soft X-ray spectral properties and the luminosities of the single spectral components as well as of the total emission. We model empirically all outburst light curves, and estimate the characteristic decay time-scales as well as the energetics involved. We investigate the link between different parameters (e.g. the luminosity at the peak of the outburst and in quiescence, the maximum l…
We report on single-pulse observations of the Galactic Center magnetar PSR J1745$-$2900 that were made using the Parkes 64-m radio telescope with a central frequency of 3.1 GHz at five observing epochs between 2013 July and August. The shape of the integrated pulse profiles was relatively stable across the five observations, indicating that the pulsar was in a stable state between MJDs 56475 and 56514. This extends the known stable state of this pulsar to 6.8 months. Short term pulse shape variations were also detected. It is shown that this pulsar switches between two emission modes frequentl…
We report the detection of the pulsed signal of the radio-quiet magnetar-like pulsar PSR J1846-0258 in the high-energy \gr-ray data of the Fermi Large Area Telescope (Fermi LAT). We produced phase-coherent timing models exploiting RXTE PCA and Swift XRT monitoring data for the post- (magnetar-like) outburst period from 2007 August 28 to 2016 September 4, with independent verification using INTEGRAL ISGRI and Fermi GBM data. Phase-folding barycentric arrival times of selected Fermi LAT events from PSR J1846-0258, resulted in a 4.2 sigma detection (30--100 MeV) of a broad pulse consistent in sha…
Magnetars are strongly magnetized pulsars and they occasionally show violent radiative outbursts. They also often exhibit glitches which are sudden changes in the spin frequency. It was found that some glitches were associated with outbursts but their connection remains unclear. We present a systematic study to identify possible correlations between them. We find that the glitch size of magnetars likely shows a bimodal distribution, different from the distribution of the Vela-like recurrent glitches but consistent with the high end of that of normal pulsars. A glitch is likely a necessary cond…
Modeling magnetar outbursts: Flux enhancements and the connection with short bursts and glitches
Radio magnetars are exotic sources noted for their diverse spectro-temporal phenomenology and pulse profile variations over weeks to months. Unusual for radio magnetars, the Galactic Center (GC) magnetar $\rm PSR~J1745-2900$ has been continually active since its discovery in 2013. We monitored the GC magnetar at $\rm 4-8~GHz$ for 6 hours in August$-$September 2019 using the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope. During our observations, the GC magnetar emitted a flat fluence spectrum over $\rm 5-8~GHz$ to within $2σ$ uncertainty. From our data, we estimate a $\rm 6.4~GHz$ period-averaged flux de…
Polarised radio emission from PSR J1745-2900 has already been used to investigate the strength of the magnetic field in the Galactic Centre, close to Sagittarius A*. Here we report how persistent radio emission from this magnetar, for over four years since its discovery, has revealed large changes in the observed Faraday rotation measure, by up to 3500 rad m$^{-2}$ (a five per cent fractional change). From simultaneous analysis of the dispersion measure, we determine that these fluctuations are dominated by variations in the projected magnetic field, rather than the integrated free electron de…
We investigated the radio spectra of two magnetars, PSR J1622$-$4950 and 1E 1547.0$-$5408, using observations from the Australia Telescope Compact Array and the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array taken in 2017. Our observations of PSR J1622$-$4950 show a steep spectrum with a spectral index of $-$1.3 $\pm$ 0.2 in the range of 5.5-45 GHz during its re-activating X-ray outburst in 2017. By comparing the data taken at different epochs, we found significant enhancement in the radio flux density. The spectrum of 1E 1547.0$-$5408 was inverted in the range of 43-95 GHz, suggesting a spectra…
The Deep Space Network (DSN) is a worldwide array of radio telescopes that supports NASA's interplanetary spacecraft missions. When the DSN antennas are not communicating with spacecraft, they provide a valuable resource for performing observations of radio magnetars, searches for new pulsars at the Galactic Center, and additional pulsar-related studies. We describe the DSN's capabilities for carrying out these types of observations. We also present results from observations of three radio magnetars, PSR J1745-2900, PSR J1622-4950, and XTE J1810-197, and the transitional magnetar candidate, PS…
The low braking-index pulsar PSR J1734$-$3333 could be born with superhigh internal magnetic fields $B_{\rm in}\sim10^{15}-10^{16}$ G, and undergo a supercritical accretion soon after its formation in a supernova explosion. The buried multipole magnetic fields will merger into a dipole magnetic field. Since the magnetic flow transfers from the core to the crust of the pulsar, its surface dipole field grows quickly at a power-law form assumed until it saturates at the level of internal dipole field. The increase in surface dipole magnetic field results in the observed low braking index of $n=0.…
The magnetar Swift J1822.3$-$1606 entered an outburst phase in 2011 July. Previous X-ray studies of its post-outburst rotational evolution yielded inconsistent measurements of the spin-inferred magnetic field. Here we present the timing behavior and flux relaxation from over two years of Swift, XTE, and Chandra observations following the outburst. We find that the ambiguity in previous timing solutions was due to enhanced spin down that resembles an exponential recovery following a glitch at the outburst onset. After fitting out the effects of the recovery, we measure a long-term spin-down rat…
The magnetar SGR J1745-2900 discovered at parsecs distance from the Milky Way central black hole, Sagittarius A*, represents the closest pulsar to a supermassive black hole ever detected. Furthermore, its intriguing radio emission has been used to study the environment of the black hole, as well as to derive a precise position and proper motion for this object. The discovery of SGR J1745-2900 has opened interesting debates about the number, age and nature of pulsars expected in the Galactic center region. In this work, we present extensive X-ray monitoring of the outburst of SGR J1745-2900 usi…
We report on the long-term flux relaxation of the magnetar SGR 1627-41 after its 2008 outburst, and evidence for hard X-ray excess measured with NuSTAR. We use new observations made with Chandra and XMM-Newton, and an archival NuSTAR observation which add flux measurements at ~2000 days into quiescence after the 2008 outburst. We find that the source flux has further declined since the last measurement made in 2011, ~1000 days after the outburst in 2008. This trend is similar to the relaxation after the source's 1998 outburst. We use crustal cooling models to reproduce the flux relaxation; if …
We present results from observations of the Galactic Center magnetar, PSR J1745-2900, at 2.3 and 8.4 GHz with the NASA Deep Space Network 70 m antenna, DSS-43. We study the magnetar's radio profile shape, flux density, radio spectrum, and single pulse behavior over a ~1 year period between MJDs 57233 and 57621. In particular, the magnetar exhibits a significantly negative average spectral index of $\langleα\rangle$ = -1.86 $\pm$ 0.02 when the 8.4 GHz profile is single-peaked, which flattens considerably when the profile is double-peaked. We have carried out an analysis of single pulses at 8.4 …
Magnetars are neutron stars having extreme magnetic field strengths. Study of their emission properties in quiescent state can help understand effects of a strong magnetic field on neutron stars. SGR 0501+4516 is a magnetar that was discovered in 2008 during an outburst, which has recently returned to quiescence. We report its spectral and timing properties measured with new and archival observations from the Chandra X-Ray Observatory, XMM-Newton, and Suzaku. We found that the quiescent spectrum is best fit by a power-law plus two blackbody model, with temperatures of kT_low~0.26 keV and kT_hi…
We present a Chandra Director's Discretionary Time observation of PSR J1119-6127 and its compact X-ray pulsar wind nebula (PWN) obtained on 27 October 2016, three months after the Fermi and Swift detection of millisecond bursts in hard X-rays, accompanied by >160 times increase in flux. This magnetar-like activity, the first observed from a rotation-powered radio pulsar, provides an important probe of the physical processes that differentiate radio pulsars from magnetars. The post-burst X-ray spectrum of the pulsar can be described by a single powerlaw model with a photon index of 2.0\pm0.2 an…
The defining trait of magnetars, the most strongly magnetized neutron stars (NSs), is their transient activity in the X/$γ$-bands. In particular, many of them undergo phases of enhanced emission, the so-called outbursts, during which the luminosity rises by a factor $\sim$10$-$1000 in a few hours to then decay over months/years. Outbursts often exhibit a thermal spectrum, associated with the appearance of hotter regions on the surface of the star, which subsequently change in shape and cool down. Here we simulate the unfolding of a sudden, localized heat injection in the external crust of a NS…
After two major outbursts in 2006 and 2011, on 2017 May 16 the magnetar CXOU J164710.2-455216, hosted within the massive star cluster Westerlund I, emitted a short (20 ms) burst, which marked the onset of a new active phase. We started a long-term monitoring campaign with Swift (45 observations), Chandra (5 observations) and NuSTAR (4 observations) from the activation until 2018 April. During the campaign, Swift BAT registered the occurrence of multiple bursts, accompanied by two other enhancements of the X-ray persistent flux. The long time span covered by our observations allowed us to study…

Multi-instrument X-ray monitoring of the January 2009 outburst from the recurrent magnetar candidate 1E 1547.0-5408
Four significant events of rapid $^{14}$C increase have taken place within the past several thousand years. The physical origin of these rapid increases is still a mystery but must be associated with extremely energetic cosmic processes. Pulsars are highly magnetized neutron stars that emit a beam of electromagnetic radiations. Any sudden release of the energy stored in the magnetic multipole field will trigger outbursts similar to the giant flares of magnetars. Here we show that the relativistic outflow from the outbursts of a nearby pulsar interacting with the interstellar medium generates a…
The magnetic field of magnetars may be twisted compared with that of normal pulsars. Previous works mainly discussed magnetic energy release in the closed field line regions of magnetars. For a twisted magnetic field, the field lines will inflate in the radial direction. Similar to normal pulsars, the idea of light cylinder radius is introduced. More field lines will cross the light cylinder and become open for a twisted magnetic field. Therefore, magnetars may have a large polar cap, which may correspond to the hot spot during outburst. Particle flow in the open field line regions will result…
Magnetars, isolated neutron stars with magnetic field strengths typically $\gtrsim10^{14}$~G, exhibit distinctive months-long outburst epochs during which strong evolution of soft X-ray pulse profiles, along with nonthermal magnetospheric emission components, is often observed. Using near-daily NICER observations of the magnetar SGR 1830-0645 during the first 37 days of a recent outburst decay, a pulse peak migration in phase is clearly observed, transforming the pulse shape from an initially triple-peaked to a single-peaked profile. Such peak merging has not been seen before for a magnetar. O…
On the braking index of the unusual high-B rotation-powered pulsar PSR J1846-0258
The characteristic age of PSR J1734$-$3333 estimated from its current spin down rate implies that it is a young pulsar ($τ_c<10$ kyr). But the time derivative of its spin down rate differs markedly from that assumed for normal radio pulsars, meaning its actual age is uncertain. G354.8$-$0.8 is a supernova remnant (SNR) whose centre is located 21 arcmin away of the pulsar, and with a morphology that suggests an association with the pulsar. We want to assess the likelihood of the association between PSR J1734$-$3333 and G354.8$-$0.8 or other nearby supernova remnants quantitatively, with the obj…

The braking index of PSR J1734-3333 and the magnetar population
We apply theoretical spin-down models of magnetospheric evolution and magnetic field decay to simulate the possible evolution of PSR J0250+5854, which is the slowest-spinning radio pulsar detected to date. Considering the alignment of inclination angle in a 3-D magnetosphere, it is possible that PSR J0250+5854 has a high magnetic field comparable with magnetars or/and high magnetic field pulsars, if a small inclination angle is considered. Our calculations show that similar long-period pulsars tend to have a relatively low period derivative in this case. In another case of magnetic field decay…
High magnetic field (high-B) pulsars are key sources to bridge magnetars and conventional rotation powered pulsars, and thus to understand the origin of magnetar activities. We have estimated a tight upper-limit on the X-ray flux of one of the youngest high-B pulsars PSR J1208-6238 for the first time; a Chandra 10 ks observation shows no significant source. Depending on the emission models, the 3sigma upper-limit on the intrinsic 0.5-7 keV flux to (2.2-10.0)e-14 erg/s/cm2.
We present the X-ray survey results of high-magnetic-field radio pulsars (high-B PSRs) with Swift/XRT. X-ray observations of the rotation-powered pulsars with the dipole magnetic field ${\it B_{\rm d}}$ near the quantum critical field ${\it B_{\rm q}}=4.4\times10^{13}$ G is of great importance for understanding the transition between the rotation-powered pulsars and the magnetars, because there are a few objects that have magnetar-like properties. Out of the 27 high-B PSRs that are in the ATNF pulsar catalogue but have not been reported or have no effective upper-limits in the X-ray bands, we …
The magnetar SGR J1935+2154 underwent a new active episode on 2020 April 27-28, when a forest of hundreds of X-ray bursts and a large enhancement of the persistent flux were detected. For the first time, a radio burst with properties similar to those of fast radio bursts and with a X-ray counterpart was observed from this source, showing that magnetars can power at least a group of fast radio bursts. In this paper, we report on the X-ray spectral and timing properties of SGR J1935+2154 based on a long-term monitoring campaign with Chandra, XMM-Newton, NuSTAR, Swift and NICER covering a time sp…
We report on a search for dark matter axion conversion photons from the magnetosphere of the Galactic Center magnetar PSR J1745-2900 using spectra obtained from the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array. No significant spectral features are detected. Using a hybrid model for PSR J1745-2900 and canonical assumptions about the dark matter density profile, we exclude axion models with axion-photon coupling $g_{aγγ}$ > 6-34 x 10$^{-12}$ GeV$^{-1}$ with 95% confidence over the mass ranges 4.2-8.4, 18.6-26.9, 33.0-41.4, 53.7-62.1, and 126.0-159.3 $μ$eV. If there is a dark matter cusp, the limits reduce to…
