Accreting millisecond X-ray pulsars are an important subset of low-mass X-ray binaries in which coherent X-ray pulsations can be observed during occasional, bright outbursts (X-ray luminosity $L_X\sim 10^{36}$ erg s$^{-1}$). These pulsations show that matter is being channeled onto the neutron star's magnetic poles. However, such sources spend most of their time in a low-luminosity, quiescent state ($L_X\lesssim 10^{34}$ erg s$^{-1}$), where the nature of the accretion flow onto the neutron star (if any) is not well understood. Here we report that the millisecond pulsar/low-mass X-ray binary transition object PSR J1023+0038 intermittently shows coherent X-ray pulsations at luminosities nearly 100 times fainter than observed in any other accreting millisecond X-ray pulsar. We conclude that in spite of its low luminosity PSR J1023+0038 experiences episodes of channeled accretion, a discovery that challenges existing models for accretion onto magnetized neutron stars.
IGR J06074+2205 is a poorly studied X-ray source with a Be star companion. It has been proposed to belong to the group of Be/X-ray binaries. In Be/X-ray binaries, accretion onto the neutron star occurs via the transfer of material from the Be star's circumstellar disk. Thus, in the absence of the disk, no X-ray should be detected. The main goal of this work is to study the quiescent X-ray emission of IGR J06074+2205 during a disk-loss episode. We show that at the time of the XMM-Newton observation the decretion disk around the Be star had vanished. Still, accretion appears as the source of ene…
We report on the Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) monitoring campaign of the 468 Hz accreting millisecond X-ray pulsar IGR J17379-3747. From a detailed spectral and timing analysis of the coherent pulsations we find that they show a strong energy dependence, with soft thermal emission lagging about 640 microseconds behind the hard, Comptonized emission. Additionally, we observe uncommonly large pulse fractions, with measured amplitudes in excess of 20% sinusoidal fractional amplitude across the NICER passband and fluctuations of up to ~70%. Based on a phase-resolved spectral …
We report a 72 ks XMM-Newton observation of the Be/X-ray pulsar (BeXRP) RX J0812.4-3114 in quiescence ($L_X \approx 1.6 \times 10^{33}~\mathrm{erg~s^{-1}}$). Intriguingly, we find a two component spectrum, with a hard power-law ($Γ\approx 1.5$) and a soft blackbody-like excess below $\approx 1~\mathrm{keV}$. The blackbody component is consistent in $kT$ with a prior quiescent Chandra observation reported by Tsygankov et al. and has an inferred blackbody radius of $\approx 10~\mathrm{km}$, consistent with emission from the entire neutron star (NS) surface. There is also mild evidence for an abs…

Cepheids are pulsating variable stars with a periodic chromospheric response at UV wavelengths close to their minimum radius phase. Recently, an X-ray variable signature was captured in observations during the \emph{maximum} radius phase. This X-ray emission came as a surprise and is not understood. In this work, we use the modern astrophysical code, PLUTO, to investigate the effects of pulsations on Cepheid X-ray emission. We run a number of hydrodynamic numerical simulations with a variety of initial and boundary conditions in order to explore the capability of shocks to produce the observed…
Using a 16.2 hr radio observation by the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) and archival Chandra data, we found $>5σ$ radio counterparts to 4 known and 3 new X-ray sources within the half-light radius ($r_\mathrm{h}$) of the Galactic globular cluster NGC 6397. The previously suggested millisecond pulsar (MSP) candidate, U18, is a steep-spectrum ($S_ν\propto ν^α$; $α=-2.0^{+0.4}_{-0.5}$) radio source with a 5.5 GHz flux density of $54.7\pm 4.3~\mathrm{μJy}$. We argue that U18 is most likely a "hidden" MSP that is continuously hidden by plasma shocked at the collision between the winds fro…
Detection of a large Be circumstellar disk during X-ray quiescence of XTE J1946+274
发现脉动,P_pulse=15.757(1)s(MJD 56363.115),rms脉冲分数为32.1(3)%。在静止…
We report results of the first broadband observation of the transient X-ray pulsar GRO J1008-57 performed in the quiescent state. Observations were conducted quasi-simultaneously with the Mikhail Pavlinsky ART-XC telescope on board SRG and NuSTAR right before the beginning of a Type I outburst. GRO J1008-57 was detected in the state with the lowest observed luminosity around several $\times 10^{34}$ erg s$^{-1}$ and consequently accreting from the cold disk. Timing analysis allowed to significantly detect pulsations during this state for the first time. The observed pulsed fraction of about 20…
Several redback and black widow millisecond pulsar binaries have episodes of flaring in X-rays and optical. We initially detected such behavior from the Fermi selected redback candidate 1FGL J0523.5$-$2529 during optical time-series monitoring. Triggered observations with the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory over the next $\approx100$ days showed episodic flaring in X-rays with luminosity up to $8\times10^{33}$ erg s$^{-1}$ ($\sim100$ times the minimum), and a comparable luminosity in the optical/UV, with similar power-law spectra of $f_ν\proptoν^{-0.7}$. These are the most luminous flares seen …
We present the timing and spectral studies of the Be/X-ray binary XTE J1946+274 during its 2018 and 2021 giant outbursts using observations with the SXT and the LAXPC instruments on the AstroSat satellite. Unlike the 1998 and 2010 outbursts, where a giant outburst was followed by several low intensity periodic outbursts, the 2018 and 2021 outbursts were single outbursts. The X-ray pulsations are detected over a broad energy band covering 0.5-80 keV from the compact object. We construct the spin evolution history of the pulsar over two decades and find that the pulsar spins-up during the outbur…
The Galactic supergiant B[e] star CI Camelopardalis (CI Cam) was the first sgB[e] star detected during an X-ray outburst. The star brightened to $\sim$2 Crab in the X-ray regime within hours before decaying to a quiescent level in less than 2 weeks, clearly indicative of binarity. Since the outburst of CI Cam, a number of sgB[e] stars have been identified as X-ray overluminous for a single star (i.e. $L_X > 10^{-7}~L_{bol}$). This small population has recently expanded to include two Ultra Luminous X-ray sources (ULX), Holmberg II X-1 and NGC300 ULX-1/supernova imposter SN2010da. We revisit CI…
