The deviations of non-linear perturbations of black holes from the linear case are important in the context of ringdown signals with large signal-to-noise ratio. To facilitate a comparison between the two we derive several results of linear perturbation theory in coordinates which may be adopted in numerical work. Specifically, our results are derived in Kerr-Schild coordinates adjusted by a general height function. In the first part of the paper we address the questions: for an initial configuration of a massless scalar field, what is the amplitude of the excited quasinormal mode (QNM) for any observer outside outside the event horizon, and furthermore what is the resulting tail contribution? This is done by constructing the full Green's function for the problem with exact solutions of the confluent Heun equation satisfying appropriate boundary conditions. In the second part of the paper, we detail new developments to our pseudospectral numerical relativity code bamps to handle scalar fields. In the linear regime we employ precisely the Kerr-Schild coordinates treated by our previous analysis. In particular, we evolve pure QNM type initial data along with several other types of initial data and report on the presence of overtone modes in the signal.
We use the Kerr-Schild type Teukolsky equation (horizon penetrating) to evolve binary black hole initial data as proposed by Bishop {\em et al.} in the close limit. Our results are in agreement with those recently obtained by Sarbach {\em et al.} from the Zerilli equation evolution of the same initial data.
We study the quasinormal mode eigenvalues and eigenfunctions for the Teukolsky equation in a horizon penetrating, hyperboloidally compactified (HPHC) coordinate system. Following earlier work by Zenginoğlu (arXiv:1102.2451), we show that the quasinormal eigenfunctions for the Teukolsky equation are regular from the black hole horizon to future null infinity in these coordinates. We then present several example quasinormal eigenfunction solutions, and study some of their properties in the near-extremal Kerr limit.
We derive the Teukolsky equation for perturbations of a Kerr spacetime when the spacetime metric is written in either ingoing or outgoing Kerr-Schild form. We also write explicit formulae for setting up the initial data for the Teukolsky equation in the time domain in terms of a three metric and an extrinsic curvature. The motivation of this work is to have in place a formalism to study the evolution in the ``close limit'' of two recently proposed solutions to the initial value problem in general relativity that are based on Kerr-Schild slicings. A perturbative formalism in horizon penetrating…
We derive a geometrical version of the Regge-Wheeler and Zerilli equations, which allows us to study gravitational perturbations on an arbitrary spherically symmetric slicing of a Schwarzschild black hole. We explain how to obtain the gauge-invariant part of the metric perturbations from the amplitudes obeying our generalized Regge-Wheeler and Zerilli equations and vice-versa. We also give a general expression for the radiated energy at infinity, and establish the relation between our geometrical equations and the Teukolsky formalism. The results presented in this paper are expected to be usef…
In this work we present a formulation of the Teukolsky equation for generic spin perturbations on the hyperboloidal and horizon penetrating foliation of Kerr recently proposed by Racz and Toth. An additional, spin-dependent rescaling of the field variable can be used to achieve stable, long-term, and accurate time-domain evolutions of generic spin perturbations. As an application (and a severe numerical test), we investigate the late-time decays of electromagnetic and gravitational perturbations at the horizon and future null infinity by means of 2+1 evolutions. As initial data we consider fou…
The explicit form of perturbation equation for the $Ψ_4$ Weyl scalar, containing the matter source terms, is derived for general type D spacetimes. It is described in detail the particular case of the Schwarzschild spacetime using in-going penetrating coordinates. As a practical application, we focused on the emission of gravitational waves when a black hole is perturbed by a surrounding dust-like fluid matter. The symmetries of the spacetime and the simplicity of the matter source allow, by means of a spherical harmonic decomposition, to study the problem by means of a one dimensional numeric…
We construct approximate initial data for non-spinning black hole binary systems by asymptotically matching the 4-metrics of two tidally perturbed Schwarzschild solutions in isotropic coordinates to a resummed post-Newtonian 4-metric in ADMTT coordinates. The specific matching procedure used here closely follows the calculation in gr-qc/0503011, and is performed in the so called buffer zone where both the post-Newtonian and the perturbed Schwarzschild approximations hold. The result is that both metrics agree in the buffer zone, up to the errors in the approximations. However, since isotropic …
Geodesics (by definition) have an intrinsic 4-acceleration zero. However, when expressed in terms of coordinates, the coordinate acceleration $d^2 x^i/d t^2$ can very easily be non-zero, and the coordinate velocity $d x^i/d t$ can behave unexpectedly. The situation becomes extremely delicate in the near-horizon limit---for both astrophysical and idealised black holes---where an inappropriate choice of coordinates can quite easily lead to significant confusion. We shall carefully explore the relative merits of horizon-penetrating versus horizon-non-penetrating coordinates, arguing that in the n…
We describe the Kerr black hole in the ingoing and outgoing Kerr-Schild horizon penetrating coordinates. Starting from the null vector naturally defined in these coordinates, we construct the null tetrad for each case, as well as the corresponding geometrical quantities allowing us to explicitly derive the field equations for the ${Ψ_0}^{(1)}$ and ${Ψ_4}^{(1)}$ perturbed scalar projections of the Weyl tensor, including arbitrary source terms. This perturbative description, including arbitrary sources, described in horizon penetrating coordinates is desirable in several lines of research on bla…
The Cauchy horizon inside a perturbed Kerr black hole develops an instability that transforms it into a curvature singularity. We solve for the linearized Weyl scalars $ψ_0$ and $ψ_4$ and for the curvature scalar $R_{αβγδ}R^{αβγδ}$ along outgoing null rays approaching the Cauchy horizon in the interior of perturbed Kerr black holes using the Teukolsky equation, and compare our results with those found in perturbation analysis. Our results corroborate the previous perturbation analysis result that at its early parts the Cauchy horizon evolves into a deformationally-weak, null, scalar-curvature …
In a companion paper we showed that the symmetry group $\mathfrak{G}$ of non-expanding horizons (NEHs) is a 1-dimensional extension of the Bondi-Metzner-Sachs group $\mathfrak{G}$ at $\mathcal{I}^{+}$. For each infinitesimal generator of $\mathfrak{G}$, we now define a charge and a flux on NEHs as well as perturbed NEHs. The procedure uses the covariant phase space framework in presence of internal null boundaries $\mathcal{N}$. However, $\mathcal{N}$ is required to be an NEH or a perturbed NEH. Consequently, charges and fluxes associated with generators of $\mathfrak{G}$ are free of physicall…
We discuss parameterizations of black-hole spacetimes in and beyond General Relativity in view of their symmetry constraints: within the class of axisymmetric, stationary spacetimes, we propose a parameterization that includes non-circular spacetimes, both in Boyer-Lindquist as well as in horizon-penetrating coordinates. We show how existing parameterizations, which make additional symmetry assumptions (first, circularity; second, a hidden constant of motion), are included in the new parameterization. Further, we explain why horizon-penetrating coordinates may be more suitable to parameterize …
The Ashtekar and Ashtekar-Barbero connection variable formulations of Kerr isolated horizons are derived. Using a regular Kinnersley tetrad in horizon-penetrating Kruskal-Szekeres-like coordinates, the spin coefficients of Kerr geometry are determined by solving the first Maurer-Cartan equation of structure. Isolated horizon conditions are imposed on the tetrad and the spin coefficients. A transformation into an orthonormal tetrad frame that is fixed in the time gauge is applied and explicit calculations of the spin connection, the Ashtekar and Ashtekar-Barbero connections, and the correspondi…
The separability of the massive Dirac equation in the non-extreme Kerr geometry in horizon-penetrating advanced Eddington-Finkelstein-type coordinates is shown. To this end, the Kerr geometry is described in the Newman-Penrose formalism by a regular Carter tetrad and the Dirac spinors and matrices are defined in a chiral Newman-Penrose dyad representation. Applying Chandrasekhar's mode ansatz, the Dirac equation is separated into radial and angular systems of ordinary differential equations. Asymptotic radial solutions at infinity, the event horizon, and the Cauchy horizon are derived, and the…

The evolutions of linear structures in a spatially homogeneous and isotropic world model are characterized by some conserved quantities: the amplitude of gravitational wave is conserved in the super-horizon scale, the perturbed three-space curvature in the comoving gauge is conserved in the super-sound-horizon scale, and the angular momentum of rotational perturbation is generally conserved.
We explicitly construct the metric of a Kerr black hole that is tidally perturbed by the external universe in the slow-motion approximation. This approximation assumes that the external universe changes slowly relative to the rotation rate of the hole, thus allowing the parameterization of the Newman-Penrose scalar $ψ_0$ by time-dependent electric and magnetic tidal tensors. This approximation, however, does not constrain how big the spin of the background hole can be and, in principle, the perturbed metric can model rapidly spinning holes. We first generate a potential by acting with a differ…
We investigate relativistic low angular momentum accretion of inviscid perfect fluid onto a Schwarzschild black hole. The simulations are performed with a general-relativistic, high-resolution (second-order), shock-capturing, hydrodynamical numerical code. We use horizon-penetrating Eddington-Finkelstein coordinates to remove inaccuracies in regions of strong gravity near the black hole horizon and show the expected convergence of the code with the Michel solution and stationary Fishbone-Moncrief toroids. We recover, in the framework of relativistic hydrodynamics, the qualitative behavior know…
We study numerically the evolution of spactime, and in particular of a spacetime singularity, inside a black hole under a class of perturbations of non-compact support. We use a very simplified toy model of a spherical charged black hole which is perturbed nonlinearly by a self-gravitating, spherical scalar field. The latter grows logarithmically with advanced time along an outgoing characteristic hypersurface. We find that for that class of perturbations a portion of the Cauchy horizon survives as a non-central, null singularity.
We calculate the emission of gravitational waves, gravitons, photons and neutrinos from a perturbed Schwarzschild blackhole (BH). The perturbation can be due to either classical or quantum sources and therefore the injected energy can be either positive or negative. The emission can be classical in nature, as in the case of gravitational waves, or of quantum nature, for gravitons and the additional fields. We first set up the theoretical framework for calculating the emission by treating the case of a minimally coupled scalar field and then present the results for the other fields. We perform …
We construct planar black hole solutions in AdS_3 and AdS_4 in which the boundary CFT is perturbed by marginally relevant quenched disorder. We show that the entropy density of the horizon has the scaling temperature dependence s \sim T^{(d-1)/z} (with d=2,3). The dynamical critical exponent z is computed numerically and, at weak disorder, analytically. These results lend support to the claim that the perturbed CFT flows to a disordered quantum critical theory in the IR.
For a Kerr black hole perturbed by a particle on the "corotating" circular orbit (angular velocity equal to that of the unperturbed event horizon), the black hole remains in equilibrium in the sense that the perturbed event horizon is a Killing horizon of the helical Killing field. The associated surface gravity is constant over the horizon and should correspond to the physical Hawking temperature. We calculate the perturbation in surface gravity/temperature, finding it negative: the moon has a cooling effect on the black hole. We also compute the change in horizon angular frequency, which is …

We model an extreme mass ratio merger (EMR) as a point particle radially plunging into a large Schwarzschild black hole. We assume that the mass of the point particle, $μ$, is much smaller than the black hole mass M. Under this assumption we can employ the Zerilli formalism modified to include a source term which arises from the energy-momentum tensor of the small object. We solve the Zerilli equation by numerically evolving initial data. Then, we ray trace the null geodesics of the event horizon from after the merger backward in time to extract the geometry of the perturbed event horizon. Fur…
We study the Cauchy horizon (CH) singularity of a spherical charged black hole perturbed nonlinearly by a self-gravitating massless scalar field. We show numerically that the singularity is weak both at the early and at the late sections of the CH, where the focusing of the area coordinate $r$ is strong. In the early section the metric is almost Reissner-Nordström, and the fields behave according to perturbation analysis. We find exact analytical expressions for the gradients of $r$ and of the scalar field, which are valid at both sections. We then verify these analytical results numerically.
We have studied the wave properties of the cold and isothermal plasma in the vicinity of the Schwarzschild black hole event horizon. The Fourier analyzed perturbed 3+1 GRMHD equations are taken on the basis of which the complex dispersion relations are obtained for non-rotating, rotating non-magnetized and rotating magnetized backgrounds. The propagation and attenuation vectors along with the refractive index are obtained (shown in graphs) to study the dispersive properties of the medium near the event horizon. The results show that no information can be obtained from the Schwarzschild magneto…
Using the Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin (WKB) approximation we study the formation and propagation of quantum bound states in the vicinity of a Galileon black hole. We show that for given ranges of black hole horizon radii and of the derivative coupling which appears in the metric of the Galileon black hole, a Regge-Wheeler potential containing a local well is formed. Varying the strength of the derivative coupling we investigate the behaviour of the bound states trapped in the potential well or penetrating the horizon of the Galileon black hole.
When one splits spacetime into space plus time, the Weyl curvature tensor (which equals the Riemann tensor in vacuum) splits into two spatial, symmetric, traceless tensors: the tidal field $E$, which produces tidal forces, and the frame-drag field $B$, which produces differential frame dragging. In recent papers, we and colleagues have introduced ways to visualize these two fields: tidal tendex lines (integral curves of the three eigenvector fields of $E$) and their tendicities (eigenvalues of these eigenvector fields); and the corresponding entities for the frame-drag field: frame-drag vortex…
We solve the 2+1-dimensional Teukolsky equation numerically for the Weyl scalars $ψ_0$ and $ψ_4$ along a time-like geodesic approaching the Cauchy horizon of a rapidly rotating perturbed Kerr black hole. We find that both the amplitude and frequency of the Weyl scalars agree with the results of linear perturbation analysis. We then model a physical object by a simple damped harmonic oscillator, which is driven by an external force that mimics the tidal force experienced by the infalling object. We use this model to find the total deformation of the object at the Cauchy horizon, and the resonan…
The mass inflation phenomenon implies that black hole interiors are unstable due to a back-reaction divergence of the perturbed black hole mass function at the Cauchy horizon. Weak point in the standard mass inflation calculations is in a fallacious using of the global Cauchy horizon as a place for the maximal growth of the back-reaction perturbations instead of the local inner apparent horizon. It is derived the new spherically symmetric back-reaction solution for two counter-streaming light-like fluxes near the inner apparent horizon of the charged black hole by taking into account its separ…
In the early section the metric perturbations vanish, and the fields behave according to perturbation analysis. We find exact analytical expressions for the gradients of $r$ and of the scalar field, which are valid at both sections. We then verify these analytical results numerically.
We construct initial data corresponding to a single perturbed Kerr black hole in vacuum. These data are defined on specific hyperboloidal ("ACMC-") slices on which the mean extrinsic curvature K asymptotically approaches a constant at future null infinity scri+. More precisely, we require that K obeys the Taylor expansion K=K0 + s^4 where K0 is a constant and s describes a compactified spatial coordinate such that scri+ is represented by s=0. We excise the singular interior of the black hole and assume a marginally outer trapped surface as inner boundary of the computational domain. The moment…
A perturbed Reissner-Nordström-de Sitter solution is used to emphasize the nature of the singularity along the Cauchy horizon of a charged spherically symmetric black hole. For these solutions, conditions may prevail under which the mass function is bounded and yet the curvature scalar $R_{αβγδ} R^{αβγδ}$ diverges.
We present numerical simulations of a Kerr black hole perturbed by a pulse of ingoing gravitational radiation. For strong perturbations we find up to five concentric marginally outer trapped surfaces. These trapped surfaces appear and disappear in pairs, so that the total number of such surfaces at any given time is odd. The world tubes traced out by the marginally outer trapped surfaces are found to be spacelike during the highly dynamical regime, approaching a null hypersurface at early and late times. We analyze the structure of these marginally trapped tubes in the context of the dynamical…
This work is concerned with suitable choices of tetrad fields and coordinate systems for the Hamiltonian formalism of a spinning particle derived in [E. Barausse, E. Racine, and A. Buonanno, Phys. Rev. D 80, 104025 (2009)]. After demonstrating that with the originally proposed tetrad field the components of the total angular momentum are not preserved in the Schwarzschild limit, we analyze other hitherto proposed tetrad choices. Then, we introduce and thoroughly test two new tetrad fields in the horizon penetrating Kerr-Schild coordinates. Moreover, we show that for the Schwarzschild spacetime…
One of the most fundamental results of general relativity is that the event horizon of black hole is purely ingoing. On the other hand, semiclassical-gravity effects, such as particle creation and the quantization of black-hole area, suggest that black holes can emit energy. Since a black hole is characterized by the presence of the event horizon, the emitted energy must be extracted from the black hole through its horizon. These considerations provide a motivation to test the validity of the purely ingoing nature of black-hole horizon. In this paper, we propose a novel test of the purely ingo…
We discuss the merger process of binary black holes with Hawking radiation taken into account. Besides the redshifted radiation to infinity, binary black holes can exchange radiation between themselves, which is first redshifted and then blueshifted when it propagates from one hole to the other. The exchange rate should be large when the temperature-divergent horizons are penetrating each other to form a single horizon with unique temperature. This will cause non-negligible mass and angular momentum transfer between the black holes during the merging process of the horizons. We further argue i…
We use the numerical solution describing the evolution of a perturbed black string presented in Choptuik et al. (2003) to elucidate the intrinsic behavior of the horizon. It is found that by the end of the simulation, the affine parameter on the horizon has become very large and the expansion and shear of the horizon in turn very small. This suggests the possibility that the horizon might pinch off in infinite affine parameter.
We undertake a rigorous study of the stability of the Cauchy horizon in the naked self-similar Lemaitre-Tolman-Bondi spacetimes under even parity linear perturbations. We use a combination of energy methods and results about L^p-spaces to determine the behaviour of the perturbations as they evolve through the spacetime. We first establish that an average of the perturbation generically diverges on the Cauchy horizon. We next introduce a rescaled version of the perturbation, and show that it is bounded and non-zero on the Cauchy horizon. This in turn shows that the perturbation itself diverges …
In this paper, we study the chaotic motion of a massive particle moving in a perturbed Schwarzschild or Kerr background. We discover three novel orbits that do not exist in the unperturbed cases. First, we find zoom-whirl orbits moving around the photon shell which simultaneously exhibits Arnold diffusion: large oscillations of particle's angular momentum and energy. Next, we show the existence of oscillating orbits between a bounded region and infinity, analogous to Newtonian three-body problem. Thirdly, we find that in perturbed Kerr, there exists chaotic orbits around the event horizon that…
We study the existence and nature of Aretakis "hair" and its potentially observable imprint at a finite distance from the horizon (Ori-coefficient) in near-extremal black hole backgrounds. Specifically, we consider the time evolution of horizon penetrating scalar and gravitational perturbations with compact support on near-extremal Reissner-Nordstrom (NERN) and Kerr (NEK). We do this by numerically solving the Teukolsky equation and determining the Aretakis charge values on the horizon and at a finite distance from the black hole. We demonstrate that these values are no longer strictly conserv…
Relativistic cosmological perturbation analyses can be made based on several different fundamental gauge conditions. In the pressureless limit the variables in certain gauge conditions show the correct Newtonian behaviors. Considering the general curvature ($K$) and the cosmological constant ($Λ$) in the background medium, the perturbed density in the comoving gauge, and the perturbed velocity and the perturbed potential in the zero-shear gauge show the same behavior as the Newtonian ones in general scales. In the first part, we elaborate these Newtonian correspondences. In the second part, us…
We numerically investigate the interior of a four-dimensional, spherically symmetric charged black hole accreting neutral null fluid. Previous study by Marolf and Ori suggested that late infalling observers encounter an effective shock wave as they approach the outgoing portion of the inner horizon. Non-linear perturbations could generate an effective gravitational shock wave, which manifests as a drop of the area coordinate $r$ from inner horizon value $r_{-}$ towards zero in an extremely short proper time duration of the infalling observer. We consider three different scenarios: a) A charged…
