We reexamine two-dimensional Lorentzian conformal field theory using the formalism previously developed in a study of sine-square deformation of Euclidean conformal field theory. We construct three types of Virasoro algebra. One of them reproduces the result by Lüscher and Mack, while another type exhibits the divergence in the central charge term. The other leads the continuous spectrum and contains no closed time-like curve in the system.
The Haag-Kastler net of local von Neumann algebras is constructed in the ultraviolet finite regime of the sine-Gordon model, and its equivalence with the massive Thirring model is proved. In contrast to other authors, we do not add an auxiliary mass term, and we work completely in Lorentzian signature. The construction is based on the functional formalism for perturbative Algebraic Quantum Field Theory together with estimates originally derived within Constructive Quantum Field Theory and adapted to Lorentzian signature. The paper extends previous work by two of us.
Motivated by sine-square deformation (SSD) for quantum critical systems in 1+1-dimension, we discuss a Mobius quantization approach to the two-dimensional conformal field theory (CFT), which bridges the conventional radial quantization and the dipolar quantization recently proposed by Ishibashi and Tada. We then find that the continuous Virasoro algebra of the dipolar quantization can be interpreted as a continuum limit of the Virasoro algebra for scaled generators in the SSD limit of the Mobius quantization approach.
We revisit conformal quantum mechanics (CQM) from the perspective of sine-square deformation (SSD) and the entanglement Hamiltonian. The operators that correspond to SSD and the entanglement Hamiltonian are identified. Thus, the nature of SSD and entanglement can be discussed in a much simpler CQM setting than higher-dimensional field theories.
We study the properties of two-dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs) with sine-square deformation (SSD). We show that there are no eigenstates of finite norm for the Hamiltonian of a unitary CFT with SSD, except for the zero-energy vacuum state $|0\rangle$. We then introduce a regularized version of the SSD Hamiltonian which is related to the undeformed Hamiltonian via a unitary transformation corresponding to the Mobius quantization. The unitary equivalence of the two Hamiltonians allows us to obtain zero-energy states of the deformed Hamiltonian in a systematic way. The regularization …
The short-distance expansion of the tau function of the radial sine-Gordon/Painlevé III equation is given by a convergent series which involves irregular $c=1$ conformal blocks and possesses certain periodicity properties with respect to monodromy data. The long-distance irregular expansion exhibits a similar periodicity with respect to a different pair of coordinates on the monodromy manifold. This observation is used to conjecture an exact expression for the connection constant providing relative normalization of the two series. Up to an elementary prefactor, it is given by the generating fu…
Using the proposed AdS/CFT correspondence, we calculate the correlators of operators of conformal field theory at the boundary of AdS$_{d+1}$ corresponding to the sine-Gordon model in the bulk.
We study integrable deformations of sine-Liouville conformal field theory. Every integrable perturbation of this model is related to the series of quantum integrals of motion (hierarchy). We construct the factorized scattering matrices for different integrable perturbed conformal field theories. The perturbation theory, Bethe ansatz technique, renormalization group and methods of perturbed conformal field theory are applied to show that all integrable deformations of sine-Liouville model possess non-trivial duality properties.
Extending our previous construction in the sine-Gordon model, we show how to introduce two kinds of fermionic screening operators, in close analogy with conformal field theory with c<1.
The main properties of indefinite Kac-Moody and Borcherds algebras, considered in a unified way as Lorentzian algebras, are reviewed. The connection with the conformal field theory of the vertex operator construction is discussed. By the folding procedure a class of subalgebras is obtained.
This paper is a survey on special geometric structures that admit conformal Killing spinors based on lectures, given at the ``Workshop on Special Geometric Structures in String Theory'', Bonn, September 2001 and at ESI, Wien, November 2001. We discuss the case of Lorentzian signature and explain which geometries occur up to dimension 6.
We consider SUSY sine-Gordon theory in the framework of perturbed conformal field theory. Using an argument from Zamolodchikov, we obtain the vacuum structure and the kink adjacency diagram of the theory, which is cross-checked against the exact S matrix prediction, first-order perturbed conformal field theory (PCFT), the NLIE method and truncated conformal space approach. We provide evidence for consistency between the usual Lagrangian description and PCFT on the one hand, and between PCFT, NLIE and a massgap formula conjectured by Baseilhac and Fateev, on the other. In addition, we extend th…
We construct five-dimensional non-Lorentzian Lagrangian gauge field theories with an SU(1,3) conformal symmetry and 12 (conformal) supersymmetries. Such theories are interesting in their own right but can arise from six-dimensional (1,0) superconformal field theories on a conformally compactified Minkowski spacetime. In the limit that the conformal compactification is removed the Lagrangians we find give field theory formulations of DLCQ constructions of six-dimensional (1,0) conformal field theories.
By making use of conformal mapping, we construct various time-evolution operators in (1+1) dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs), which take the form $\int dx\, f(x) \mathcal{H}(x)$, where $\mathcal{H}(x)$ is the Hamiltonian density of the CFT, and $f(x)$ is an envelope function. Examples of such deformed evolution operators include the entanglement Hamiltonian, and the so-called sine-square deformation of the CFT. Within our construction, the spectrum and the (finite-size) scaling of the level spacing of the deformed evolution operator are known exactly. Based on our construction, we al…
We study chiral vertex operators in the sine-Gordon [SG] theory, viewed as an off-conformal system. We find that these operators, which would have been primary fields in the conformal limit, have interesting and, in some ways, unexpected properties in the SG model. Some of them continue to have scale- invariant dynamics even in the presence of the non-conformal cosine interaction. For instance, it is shown that the Mandelstam operator for the bosonic representation of the Fermi field does {\it not} develop a mass term in the SG theory, contrary to what the real Fermi field in the massive Thirr…
We consider a class of smooth oriented Lorentzian manifolds in dimensions three and four which admit a nowhere vanishing conformal Killing vector and a closed two-form that is invariant under the Lie algebra of conformal Killing vectors. The invariant two-form is constrained in a particular way by the conformal geometry of the manifold. In three dimensions, the conformal Killing vector must be everywhere causal (or null if the invariant two-form vanishes identically). In four dimensions, the conformal Killing vector must be everywhere null and the invariant two-form vanishes identically if the…
We propose several different types of construction principles for new classes of Toda field theories based on root systems defined on Lorentzian lattices. In analogy to conformal and affine Toda theories based on root systems of semi-simple Lie algebras, also their Lorentzian extensions come about in conformal and massive variants. We carry out the Painlevé integrability test for the proposed theories, finding in general only one integer valued resonance corresponding to the energy-momentum tensor. Thus most of the Lorentzian Toda field theories are not integrable, as the remaining resonances,…
We present the coupled nonlinear integral equations (NLIE) governing the finite size effects in N=1 super sine-Gordon model for the vacuum as well as for the excited states. Their infrared limit correctly yields the scattering data of the super sine-Gordon S-matrix conjectured by Ahn. Ultraviolet analysis is in agreement with the expected conformal data of c=3/2 CFT. Conformal perturbation theory further corroborates this result.
In conformal field theory in Minkowski momentum space, the 3-point correlation functions of local operators are completely fixed by symmetry. Using Ward identities together with the existence of a Lorentzian operator product expansion (OPE), we show that the Wightman function of three scalar operators is a double hypergeometric series of the Appell $F_4$ type. We extend this simple closed-form expression to the case of two scalar operators and one traceless symmetric tensor with arbitrary spin. Time-ordered and partially-time-ordered products are constructed in a similar fashion and their rela…
We study correlation functions in five-dimensional non-Lorentzian theories with an $SU(1,3)$ conformal symmetry. Examples of such theories have recently been obtained as $Ω$-deformed Yang-Mills Lagrangians arising from a null reduction of six-dimensional superconformal field theories on a conformally compactified Minkowski space. The correlators exhibit a rich structure with many novel properties compared to conventional correlators in Lorentzian conformal field theories. Moreover, identifying the instanton number with the Fourier mode number of the dimensional reduction offers a hope to formu…
We revisit the issue of counting all local fields of the restricted sine-Gordon model, in the case corresponding to a perturbation of minimal unitary conformal field theory. The problem amounts to the study of a quotient of certain space of polynomials which enter the integral representation for form factors. This space may be viewed as a $q$-analog of the space of conformal coinvariants associated with U_q(sl_{2}^) with q=\sqrt{-1}. We prove that its character is given by the restricted Kostka polynomial multiplied by a simple factor. As a result, we obtain a formula for the truncated charact…
The perturbed conformal field theories corresponding to the massive Symmetric Space sine-Gordon soliton theories are identified by calculating the central charge of the unperturbed conformal field theory and the conformal dimension of the perturbation. They are described by an action with a positive-definite kinetic term and a real potential term bounded from below, their equations of motion are non-abelian affine Toda equations and, moreover, they exhibit a mass gap. The unperturbed CFT corresponding to the compact symmetric space G/G_0 is either the WZNW action for G_0 or the gauged WZNW act…
We describe a general process where a non-Lorentzian rescaling of a supersymmetric field theory leads to a scale-invariant fixed point action without Lorentz invariance but where the supersymmetry is preserved or even enhanced. We apply this procedure to five-dimensional maximally supersymmetric super-Yang-Mills, leading to a field theory with 24 super(conformal) symmetries. We also apply this procedure to the BLG model with 32 super(conformal) symmetries and ABJM models with 24 super(conformal) symmetries.
We consider states of holographic conformal field theories constructed by adding sources for local operators in the Euclidean path integral, with the aim of investigating the extent to which arbitrary bulk coherent states can be represented by such Euclidean path-integrals in the CFT. We construct the associated dual Lorentzian spacetimes perturbatively in the sources. Extending earlier work, we provide explicit formulae for the Lorentzian fields to first order in the sources for general scalar field and metric perturbations in arbitrary dimensions. We check the results by holographically comp…
Some properties of the higher grading integrable generalizations of the conformal affine Toda systems are studied. The fields associated to the non-zero grade generators are Dirac spinors. The effective action is written in terms of the Wess-Zumino-Novikov-Witten (WZNW) action associated to an affine Lie algebra, and an off-critical theory is obtained as the result of the spontaneous breakdown of the conformal symmetry. Moreover, the off-critical theory presents a remarkable equivalence between the Noether and topological currents of the model. Related to the off-critical model we define a rea…
We study solvable spin chains, one-dimensional massless Dirac fermions, and conformal field theories (CFTs) with sine-square deformation (SSD), in which the Hamiltonian density is modulated by the function $f(x)=\sin^2 (πx/\ell)$, where $x$ is the position and $\ell$ is the length of the system. For the XY chain and the transverse field Ising chain at criticality, it is shown that the ground state of an open system with SSD is identical to that of a uniform chain with periodic boundary conditions. The same holds for the massless Dirac fermions with SSD, corresponding to the continuum limit of …
We analyze a version of the sine-Gordon model in which the strength of the cosine potential has a periodic dependence on time. This model can be considered as the continuum limit of the many body generalization of the Kapitza pendulum. Based on the perturbed CFT point of view, we develop a truncated conformal space approach (TCSA) to investigate the Floquet quasienergy spectrum. We focus on the effective behaviour for large driving frequencies, which we also derive exactly. Depending on the driving protocol, we can recover the original sine-Gordon model or its two-frequency version. The rich s…
The symmetric space sine-Gordon models arise by conformal reduction of ordinary 2-dim $σ$-models, and they are integrable exhibiting a black-hole type metric in target space. We provide a Lagrangian formulation of these systems by considering a triplet of Lie groups $F \supset G \supset H$. We show that for every symmetric space $F/G$, the generalized sine-Gordon models can be derived from the $G/H$ WZW action, plus a potential term that is algebraically specified. Thus, the symmetric space sine-Gordon models describe certain integrable perturbations of coset conformal field theories at the cl…
We provide a detailed construction of the quantum theory of the massless scalar field on 2-dimensional, globally-hyperbolic (in particular, Lorentzian) manifolds using the framework of perturbative algebraic quantum field theory. From this we subalgebras of observables isomorphic to the Heisenberg and Virasoro algebras on the Einstein cylinder. We also show how the conformal version of general covariance, as first introduced by Pinamonti as an extension of the construction due to Brunetti, Fredenhagen and Verch, may be applied to the concept of natural Lagrangians in order to obtain a simple c…
We consider here XXZ spin chain perturbed by the operator sigma^x (``in transverse field'') which is a lattice regularization of the sine-Gordon model. This can be shown using conformal perturbation theory. We calculated mass ratios of particles which lie in a discrete part of the spectrum and obtained results in accord with the DHN formula and in disagreement with recent calculations in literature based on numerical Bethe Ansatz and infinite momentum frame methods. We also analysed a short distance behavior of this states (UV or conformal limit). Our result for conformal dimension of the seco…
We consider a two-dimensional integrable and conformally invariant field theory possessing two Dirac spinors and three scalar fields. The interaction couples bilinear terms in the spinors to exponentials of the scalars. Its integrability properties are based on the sl(2) affine Kac-Moody algebra, and it is a simple example of the so-called conformal affine Toda theories coupled to matter fields. We show, using bosonization techniques, that the classical equivalence between a U(1) Noether current and the topological current holds true at the quantum level, and then leads to a bag model like mec…
Eleven different types of "maximally superintegrable" Hamiltonian systems on the real hyperboloid $(s^0)^2-(s^1)^2+(s^2)^2-(s^3)^2=1$ are obtained. All of them correspond to a free Hamiltonian system on the homogeneous space $SU(2,2)/U(2,1)$, but to reductions by different maximal abelian subgroups of $SU(2,2)$. Each of the obtained systems allows 5 functionally independent integrals of motion, from which it is possible to form two or more triplets in involution (each of them includes the hamiltonian). The corresponding classical and quantum equations of motion can be solved by separation of v…
We discuss non-Lorentzian Lagrangian field theories in $2n-1$ dimensions that admit an $SU(1,n)$ spacetime symmetry which includes a scaling transformation. These can be obtained by a conformal compactification of a $2n$-dimensional Minkowskian conformal field theory. We discuss the symmetry algebra, its representations including primary fields and unitarity bounds. We also give various examples of free theories in a variety of dimensions and a discussion of how to reconstruct the parent $2n$-dimensional theory.
We study the exact construction of D-branes in Lorentzian AdS(3). We start by defining a family of conformal field theories that gives a natural Euclidean version of the SL(2,R) CFT and does not correspond to H(3)+, the analytic continuation of AdS(3). We argue that one can recuperate the exact CFT results of Lorentzian AdS(3), upon an analytic continuation in the moduli space of these conformal field theories. Then we construct exact boundary states for various symmetric and symmetry-breaking D-branes in AdS(3).
In this work, motivated by the sine-square deformation (SSD) for (1+1)-dimensional quantum critical systems, we study the non-equilibrium quantum dynamics of a conformal field theory (CFT) with SSD, which was recently proposed to have continuous energy spectrum and continuous Virasoro algebra. In particular, we study the time evolution of entanglement entropy after a quantum quench from a uniform CFT, which is defined on a finite space of length $L$, to a sine-square deformed CFT. We find there is a crossover time $t^{\ast}$ that divides the entanglement evolution into two interesting regions.…
We derive a nonlinear integral equation (NLIE) for some bulk excited states of the sine-Gordon model on a finite interval with general integrable boundary interactions, including boundary terms proportional to the first time derivative of the field. We use this NLIE to compute numerically the dimensions of these states as a function of scale, and check the UV and IR limits analytically. We also find further support for the ground-state NLIE by comparison with boundary conformal perturbation theory (BCPT), boundary truncated conformal space approach (BTCSA) and the boundary analogue of the Lusc…
The interest in string Hamiltonian system has recently been rekindled due to its application to target-space duality. In this article, we explore another direction it motivates. In Sec.\ 1, conformal symmetry and some algebraic structures of the system that are related to interacting strings are discussed. These lead one naturally to the study of Lorentz surfaces in Sec.\ 2. In contrast to the case of Riemann surfaces, we show in Sec.\ 3 that there are Lorentz surfaces that cannot be conformally deformed into Mandelstam diagrams. Lastly in Sec.\ 4, we discuss speculatively the prospect of Lore…
The notion of operator resonances was introduced earlier by Al. Zamolodchikov within the framework of the conformal perturbation theory. The resonances are related to logarithmic divergences of integrals in the perturbation expansion, and manifest themselves in poles of the correlation functions and form factors of local operators considered as functions of conformal dimensions. The residues of the poles can be computed by means of some operator identities. Here we study the resonances in the Liouville, sinh- and sine-Gordon models, considered as perturbations of a massless free boson. We show…
Thermal partition functions for gravitational systems have traditionally been studied using Euclidean path integrals. But in Euclidean signature the gravitational action suffers from the conformal factor problem, which renders the action unbounded below. This makes it difficult to take the Euclidean formulation as fundamental. However, despite their familiar association with periodic imaginary time, thermal gravitational partition functions can also be described by real-time path integrals over contours defined by real Lorentzian metrics. The one caveat is that we should allow certain codimens…
We investigate a generalization of the massless boundary sine-Gordon model with conformal invariance, which has been used to describe an array of D-branes (or rolling tachyon). We consider a similar action whose couplings are replaced with external fields depending on the boundary coordinate. Even in the presence of the external fields, this model is still solvable, though it does not maintain the whole conformal symmetry. We obtain, to all orders in perturbation theory in terms of the external fields, a simpler expression of the boundary state and the disc partition function. As a by-product,…
Sine-square deformation, a recently found modulation of the coupling strength in certain statistical models, is discussed in the context of two-dimensional conformal field theories, with particular attention to open/closed string duality. This deformation is shown to be non-trivial and leads to a divergence in the worldsheet metric. The structure of the vacua of the deformed theory is also investigated. The approach advocated here may provide an understanding of string duality through the worldsheet dynamics.
We examine the connection between the nonlinear integral equation (NLIE) derived from light-cone lattice and sine-Gordon quantum field theory, considered as a perturbed c=1 conformal field theory. After clarifying some delicate points of the NLIE deduction from the lattice, we compare both analytic and numerical predictions of the NLIE to previously known results in sine-Gordon theory. To provide the basis for the numerical comparison we use data from Truncated Conformal Space method. Together with results from analysis of infrared and ultraviolet asymptotics, we find evidence that it is neces…
We study tools of the conformal bootstrap in simplifying limits, primarily a limit of large operator dimensions and small cross-ratios corresponding to non-relativistic physics in AdS. We show that T-channel conformal blocks give the classical limit of correlation functions to linear order in an interaction potential. We use the Lorentzian inversion formula to compute anomalous dimensions due to T-channel exchanges and compare with time-independent perturbation theory in AdS. These calculations include new results not restricted to any limit, including anomalous dimensions from stress-tensor e…
We argue that an infinite circumference limit can be obtained in 2-dimensional conformal field theory by adopting $L_0-(L_1+L_{-1})/2$ as a Hamiltonian instead of $L_0$. The theory obtained has a circumference of infinite length and hence exhibits a continuous and heavily degenerated spectrum as well as the continuous Virasoro algebra. The choice of this Hamiltonian was inspired partly by the so-called sine-square deformation, which is found in the study of a certain class of quantum statistical systems. The enigmatic behavior of sine-square deformed systems such as the sharing of their vacuum…
Classical sine-Gordon theory on a strip with integrable boundary conditions is considered analyzing the static (ground state) solutions, their existence, energy and stability under small perturbations. The classical analogue of Bethe-Yang quantization conditions for the (linearized) first breather is derived, and the dynamics of the ground states is investigated as a function of the volume. The results are shown to be consistent with the expectations from the quantum theory, as treated in the perturbed conformal field theory framework using the truncated conformal space method and thermodynami…
We consider superconformal and supersymmetric field theories on four-dimensional Lorentzian curved space-times, and their five-dimensional holographic duals. As in the Euclidean signature case, preserved supersymmetry for a superconformal theory is equivalent to the existence of a charged conformal Killing spinor. Differently from the Euclidean case, we show that the existence of such spinors is equivalent to the existence of a null conformal Killing vector. For a supersymmetric field theory with an R-symmetry, this vector field is further restricted to be Killing. We demonstrate how these res…
We present a discussion on recent progress in high energy diffraction from the perspective of AdS/CFT, through which a unified treatment for both perturbative and nonperturbative Pomeron emerges. By working with Unitary Irreducible Representation of Conformal group, a frame is provided in extending AdS/CFT to both forward and nearforward scattering. We present an analysis involving an exact solution to conformal blocks in Minkowski CFT and discuss possible applications. Phenomenological applications can range from forward scattering to DIS/DVCS/TMD at LHC energies and beyond.
The global conformal gauge is playing the crucial role in string theory providing the basis for quantization. Its existence for two-dimensional Lorentzian metric is known locally for a long time. We prove that if a Lorentzian metric is given on a plain then the conformal gauge exists globally on the whole ${\mathbb R}^2$. Moreover, we prove the existence of the conformal gauge globally on the whole worldsheets represented by infinite strips with straight boundaries for open and closed bosonic strings. The global existence of the conformal gauge on the whole plane is also proved for the positiv…
Conformal field theories (CFTs) in Euclidean signature satisfy well-accepted rules, such as conformal invariance and the convergent Euclidean operator product expansion (OPE). Nowadays, it is common to assume that CFT correlators exist and have various properties in the Lorentzian signature. Some of these properties may represent extra assumptions, and it is an open question if they hold for familiar statistical-physics CFTs such as the critical 3d Ising model. In this thesis, we clarify that at the level of four-point functions, the Euclidean CFT axioms imply the standard quantum field theory…
In a conformal field theory, two and three-point functions of scalar operators and conserved currents are completely determined, up to constants, by conformal invariance. The expressions for these correlators in Euclidean signature are long known in position space, and were fully worked out in recent years in momentum space. In Lorentzian signature, the position-space correlators simply follow from the Euclidean ones by means of the i-epsilon prescription. In this paper, we compute the Lorentzian correlators in momentum space and in arbitrary dimensions for three scalar operators by means of a…
We study N <= 2 superconformal and supersymmetric theories on Lorentzian threemanifolds with a view toward holographic applications, in particular to BPS black hole solutions. As in the Euclidean case, preserved supersymmetry for asymptotically locally AdS solutions implies the existence of a (charged) "conformal Killing spinor" on the boundary. We find that such spinors exist whenever there is a conformal Killing vector which is null or timelike. We match these results with expectations from supersymmetric four-dimensional asymptotically AdS black holes. In particular, BPS bulk solutions in g…
We discuss the non-equilibrium time evolution of the phase field in the sine-Gordon model using two very different approaches: the truncated Wigner approximation and the truncated conformal space approach. We demonstrate that the two approaches agree for a period covering the first few oscillations, thereby giving a solid theoretical prediction in the framework of sine-Gordon model, which is thought to describe the dynamics of two bosonic condensates in quasi-one-dimensional traps coupled via a Josephson tunneling term. We conclude, however, that the recently observed phase-locking behavior ca…
We look at the equivalence of the massive Thirring and sine-Gordon models. Previously, this equivalence was derived perturbatively in mass (though to all orders). Our calculation goes beyond that and uncovers an underlying conformal symmetry.
We investigate the relationship between conformal and spin structure on lorentzian manifolds and see how their compatibility influences the formulation of rigid supersymmetric field theories. In dimensions three, four, six and ten, we show that if the Dirac current associated with a generic spinor defines a null conformal Killing vector then the spinor must obey a twistor equation with respect to a certain connection with torsion. Of the theories we consider, those with classical superconformal symmetry in Minkowski space can be reformulated as rigid supersymmetric theories on any lorentzian m…
Using a field theory generalization of the spinning top motion, we construct nonabelian generalizations of the sine-Gordon theory according to each symmetric spaces. A Lagrangian formulation of these generalized sine-Gordon theories is given in terms of a deformed gauged Wess-Zumino-Witten action which also accounts for integrably perturbed coset conformal field theories. As for physical applications, we show that they become precisely the effective field theories of self-induced transparency in nonlinear optics. This provides a dictionary between field theory and nonlinear optics.
We study chaos in non-Lorentzian field theories, specifically Galilean and Carrollian conformal field theories in two dimensions. In a large central charge limit, we find that the Lyapunov exponent saturates the bound on chaos, conjectured originally for relativistic field theories. We recover the same Lyapunov exponent holographically by a shock-wave calculation in three-dimensional flat space cosmologies, providing further evidence for flat space holography.
