Let $M$ be an oriented geometrically finite hyperbolic manifold of infinite volume with dimension at least $3$. For all $k \geq 0$, we provide a lower bound on the $k$th eigenvalue of the Laplace-Beltrami operator of $M$ by the $k$th eigenvalue of some neighborhood of the thick part of the convex core, up to a constant. As an application, we recover a theorem similar to the one of Burger and Canary which bounds the bottom $λ_0$ of the spectrum from below by $\frac{c}{\text{vol}(C_1(M))^2}$, where $C_1(M)$ is the $1$-neighborhood of the convex core and $c$ is a constant.
We prove the meromorphic extension to C for the resolvent of the Laplacian on a class of geometrically finite hyperbolic manifolds with infinite volume and we give a polynomial bound on the number of resonances. This class notably contains the geometrically finite quotients with rational non-maximal rank cusps previously studied by Froese-Hislop-Perry.
For geometrically finite hyperbolic manifolds $Γ\backslash H^{n+1}$, we prove the meromorphic extension of the resolvent of Laplacian, Poincaré series, Einsenstein series and scattering operator to the whole complex plane. We also deduce the asymptotics of lattice points of $Γ$ in large balls of $H^{n+1}$ in terms of the Hausdorff dimension of the limit set of $Γ$.
We give results on the following questions about a topologically tame hyperbolic 3-manifold M : 1. Does M have nonzero square-integrable harmonic 1-forms? 2. Does zero lie in the spectrum of the Laplacian acting on (1-forms on M)/Ker(d)?
On geometrically finite hyperbolic manifolds $Γ\backslash H^{d}$, including those with non-maximal rank cusps, we give upper bounds on the number $N(R)$ of resonances of the Laplacian in disks of size $R$ as $R\to \infty$. In particular, if the parabolic subgroups of $Γ$ satisfy a certain Diophantine condition, the bound is $N(R)= O(R^d (\log R)^{d+1})$.
In this paper, we construct families of nonisometric hyperbolic orbifolds that contain the same isometry classes of nonflat totally geodesic subspaces. The main tool is a variant of the well-known Sunada method for constructing length-isospectral Riemannian manifolds that handles totally geodesic submanifolds of multiple codimensions simultaneously.
We show that the number of isometry classes of cusped hyperbolic $3$-manifolds that bound geometrically grows at least super-exponentially with their volume, both in the arithmetic and non-arithmetic settings.
In this article, we prove an isoperimetric inequality for the harmonic mean of the first $(n-1)$ nonzero Steklov eigenvalues on bounded domains in $n$-dimensional Hyperbolic space. Our approach to prove this result also gives a similar inequality for the first $n$ nonzero Steklov eigenvalues on bounded domains in $n$-dimensional Euclidean space.
For hyperbolic Riemann surfaces of finite geometry, we study Selberg's zeta function and its relation to the relative scattering phase and the resonances of the Laplacian. As an application we show that the conjugacy class of a finitely generated, torsion-free, discrete subgroup of SL(2,R) is determined by its trace spectrum up to finitely many possibilities, thus generalizing results of McKean and Mueller to groups which are not necessarily cofinite.
We extend the concept of renormalized volume for geometrically finite hyperbolic $3$-manifolds, and show that is continuous for geometrically convergent sequences of hyperbolic structures over an acylindrical 3-manifold $M$ with geometrically finite limit. This allows us to show that the renormalized volume attains its minimum (in terms of the conformal class at $\partial M = S$) at the geodesic class, the conformal class for which the boundary of the convex core is totally geodesic.
Let $S$ be a closed orientable hyperbolic surface with Euler characteristic$χ$, and let $λ_k(S)$ be the $k$-th positive eigenvalue for the Laplacian on $S$. According to famous result of Otal and Rosas, $λ_{-χ}>\frac14$. In this article, we prove that if thesystole of $S$ is greater than 3,46, then $λ_{-χ-1}>\frac14$.This inequality is also true for geometrically finite orientable hyperbolic surfaces without cusps with the same assumption on the systole.
In this paper we consider a domain in a space of negative constant sectional curvature. Such assumption about the sectional curvature let us develop a new technique and improve existing lower bounds of eigenvalues from Dirichlet eigenvalue problem, obtained by Alessandro Savo in 2009.
We apply topological methods to study the smallest non-zero number $λ_1$ in the spectrum of the Laplacian on finite area hyperbolic surfaces. For closed hyperbolic surfaces of genus two we show that the set $\{S \in {\mathcal{M}_2}: {λ_1}(S) > 1/4 \}$ is unbounded and disconnects the moduli space ${\mathcal{M}_2}$.
We construct first examples of discrete geometrically finite subgroups of PU(2,1) which contain parabolic elements, and are isomorphic to surface groups.
We study a $(k+1)$-dimensional hyperbolic space of a negative constant sectional curvature $κ=-1/ρ^2$. Let $λ$ be a real eigenvalue and $f_λ (x)$ be an eigenfunction of the hyperbolic Laplacian assuming a non-zero value at $x_0$. Then the average value of $f_λ(x)$ over any sphere centered at $x_0$ allows to identify the corresponding eigenvalue $λ$ uniquely as long as that average value is large enough. Otherwise, to identify the corresponding eigenvalue uniquely, we need to make sure that the computed average value is not zero and then we need to compute an additional average value of $f_λ(x)…
Following the lines of the celebrated Riemannian result of Gromoll and Meyer, we use infinite dimensional equivariant Morse theory to establish the existence of infinitely many geometrically distinct closed geodesics in a class of globally hyperbolic stationary Lorentzian manifolds.
We construct new examples of Einstein metrics by perturbing the conformal infinity of geometrically finite hyperbolic metrics and by applying the inverse function theorem in suitable weighted Hölder spaces.
As a final work to establish that frame flows for geometrically finite hyperbolic manifolds of arbitrary dimensions are exponentially mixing with respect to the Bowen-Margulis-Sullivan measure, this paper focuses on the case with cusps. To prove this, we utilize the countably infinite symbolic coding of the geodesic flow of Li-Pan and perform a frame flow version of Dolgopyat's method à la Sarkar-Winter and Tsujii-Zhang. This requires the local non-integrability condition and the non-concentration property but the challenge in the presence of cusps is that the latter holds only on a large prop…
This article presents some methods to control the bottom of the spectrum of the Laplacian $λ_0$ on hyperbolic surfaces with infinite volume. Our first result bounds the $λ_0$ of a geometrically finite surface in terms of the geometry of its convex core. We then focus on infinite type periodic hyperbolic surfaces built by gluing copies of a geometrically finite surface with boundary according to the plan of an infinite graph. We control the $λ_0$ of the so-obtained infinite surfaces by constants coming from spectral properties of the building brick and combinatorial datae of the graph. We then …
In this paper we deepen the analysis of certain classes M_{g,k} of hyperbolic 3-manifolds that were introduced in a previous work by B. Martelli, C. Petronio and the author. Each element of M_{g,k} is an oriented complete finite-volume hyperbolic 3-manifold with compact connected geodesic boundary of genus g and k cusps. We study small deformations of the complete hyperbolic structure of manifolds in M_{g,k} via a close analysis of their geodesic triangulations. We prove that several elements in M_{g,k} admit non-homeomorphic hyperbolic Dehn fillings sharing the same volume, homology, cusp vol…
The Hessian of the renormalized volume of geometrically finite hyperbolic $3$-manifolds without rank-$1$ cusps, computed at the hyperbolic metric $g$ with totally geodesic boundary of the convex core, is shown to be a strictly positive bilinear form on the tangent space to Teichmüller space. The metric $g$ is known from results of Bonahon and Storm to be an absolute minimum for the volume of the convex core. We deduce the strict convexity of the functional volume of the convex core at its minimum point.
We relate small 1-form Laplacian eigenvalues to relative cycle complexity on closed hyperbolic manifolds: small eigenvalues correspond to closed geodesics no multiple of which bounds a surface of small genus. We describe potential applications of this equivalence principle toward proving optimal torsion homology growth in families of hyperbolic 3-manifolds Benjamini-Schramm converging to $\mathbb{H}^3.$
We show that the third eigenvalue of the Neumann Laplacian in hyperbolic space is maximal for the disjoint union of two geodesic balls, among domains of given volume. This extends a recent result by Bucur and Henrot in Euclidean space, while providing a new proof of a key step in their argument
We consider the Neumann Laplacian acting on square-integrable functions on a triangle in the hyperbolic plane that has one cusp. We show that the generic such triangle has no eigenvalues embedded in its continuous spectrum. To prove this result we study the behavior of the real-analytic eigenvalue branches of a degenerating family of triangles. In particular, we use a careful analysis of spectral projections near the crossings of these eigenvalue branches with the eigenvalue branches of a model operator.
Given a geometrically finite hyperbolic cone-manifold, with the cone singularity sufficiently short, we construct a one parameter family of cone-manifolds decreasing the cone angle to zero. We also control the geometry of this one parameter family via the Schwarzian derivative of the projective boundary and the length of closed geodesics.
We introduce a new technique for finding CAT(-1) surfaces in hyperbolic 3-manifolds. We use this to show that a complete hyperbolic 3-manifold with finitely generated fundamental group is geometrically and topologically tame.
We compute the Cheeger constants of a collection of hyperbolic surfaces corresponding to maximal non-compact arithmetic Fuchsian groups, and to subgroups which are the rotation subgroup of maximal reflection groups. The Cheeger constants are geometric quantities, but relate to the smallest eigenvalues of Maass cusp forms. From geometrical considerations, we find evidence for the existence of small eigenvalues. We search for these small eigenvalues and compute the corresponding Maass cusp forms numerically.
We study geometry, topology and deformation spaces of noncompact complex hyperbolic manifolds (geometrically finite, with variable negative curvature), whose properties make them surprisingly different from real hyperbolic manifolds with constant negative curvature. This study uses an interaction between Kähler geometry of the complex hyperbolic space and the contact structure at its infinity (the one-point compactification of the Heisenberg group), in particular an established structural theorem for discrete group actions on nilpotent Lie groups.
We study the smallest positive eigenvalue $λ_1(M)$ of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on a closed hyperbolic 3-manifold $M$ which fibers over the circle, with fiber a closed surface of genus $g\geq 2$. We show the existence of a constant $C>0$ only depending on $g$ so that $λ_1(M)\in [C^{-1}/{\rm vol}(M)^2, C\log {\rm vol}(M)/{\rm vol}(M)^{2^{2g-2}/(2^{2g-2}-1)}]$ and that this estimate is essentially sharp. We show that if $M$ is typical or random, then we have $λ_1(M)\in [C^{-1}/{\rm vol}(M)^2,C/{\rm vol}(M)^2]$. This rests on a result of independent interest about reccurence properties of axe…
We define and study the renormalized volume for geometrically finite hyperbolic $3$-manifolds, including with rank-$1$ cusps. We prove a variation formula, and show that for certain families of convex co-compact hyperbolic metrics $g_\eps$ degenerating to a geometrically finite hyperbolic metric $g_0$ with rank-$1$ cusps, the renormalized volume converges to the renormalized volume of the limiting metric.
This paper determines which orientable hyperbolic 3-manifolds contain simple closed geodesics. The Fuchsian group corresponding to the thrice-punctured sphere generates the only example of a complete non-elementary orientable hyperbolic 3-manifold that does not contain a simple closed geodesic. We do not assume that the manifold is geometrically finite or that it has finitely generated fundamental group.
Let $M_g$ be the moduli space of hyperbolic surfaces of genus $g$ endowed with the Weil-Petersson metric. In this paper, we show that for any $ε>0$, as genus $g$ goes to infinity, a generic surface $X\in M_g$ satisfies that the first eigenvalue $λ_1(X)>\frac{3}{16}-ε$. As an application, we also show that a generic surface $X\in M_g$ satisfies that the diameter $\mathrm{diam}(X)<(4+ε)\ln(g)$ for large genus.

In this paper, we numerically investigate the length spectra and the low-lying eigenvalue spectra of the Laplace-Beltrami operator for a large number of small compact(closed) hyperbolic (CH) 3-manifolds. The first non-zero eigenvalues have been successfully computed using the periodic orbit sum method, which are compared with various geometric quantities such as volume, diameter and length of the shortest periodic geodesic of the manifolds. The deviation of low-lying eigenvalue spectra of manifolds converging to a cusped hyperbolic manifold from the asymptotic distribution has been measured by…
We consider four-dimensional gravity coupled to a non-linear sigma model whose scalar manifold is a non-compact geometrically finite surface $Σ$ endowed with a Riemannian metric of constant negative curvature. When the space-time is an FLRW universe, such theories produce a very wide generalization of two-field $α$-attractor models, being parameterized by a positive constant $α$, by the choice of a finitely-generated surface group $Γ\subset \mathrm{PSL}(2,\mathbb{R})$ (which is isomorphic with the fundamental group of $Σ$) and by the choice of a scalar potential defined on $Σ$. The traditional…
This paper relates the spectrum of the scalar Laplacian of an asymptotically hyperbolic Einstein metric to the conformal geometry of its ``ideal boundary'' at infinity. It follows from work of R. Mazzeo that the essential spectrum of such a metric on an $(n+1)$-dimensional manifold is the ray $[n^2/4,\infty)$, with no embedded eigenvalues; however, in general there may be discrete eigenvalues below the continuous spectrum. The main result of this paper is that, if the Yamabe invariant of the conformal structure on the boundary is non-negative, then there are no such eigenvalues. This generaliz…
We prove that every complete finite-volume hyperbolic 3-manifold $M$ that is tessellated into (embedded) right-angled regular polyhedra (dodecahedra or ideal octahedra) embeds geodesically in a complete finite-volume connected orientable hyperbolic 4-manifold $W$, which is also tessellated into right-angled regular polytopes (120-cells and ideal 24-cells). If $M$ is connected, then Vol($W$) < $2^{49}$Vol($M$). This applies for instance to the Borromean link complement. As a consequence, the Borromean link complement bounds geometrically a hyperbolic 4-manifold.
We consider a volume maximization program to construct hyperbolic structures on triangulated 3-manifolds, for which previous progress has lead to consider angle assignments which do not correspond to a hyperbolic metric on each simplex. We show that critical points of the generalized volume are associated to geometric structures modeled on the extended hyperbolic space -- the natural extension of hyperbolic space by the de Sitter space -- except for the degenerate case where all simplices are Euclidean in a generalized sense. Those extended hyperbolic structures can realize geometrically a dec…
The eigenvalues of the Laplace-Beltrami operator and the integrals of products of eigenfunctions must satisfy certain consistency conditions on compact Riemannian manifolds. These consistency conditions are derived by using spectral decompositions to write quadruple overlap integrals in terms of products of triple overlap integrals in multiple ways. In this paper, we show how these consistency conditions imply bounds on the Laplacian eigenvalues and triple overlap integrals of closed hyperbolic manifolds, in analogy to the conformal bootstrap bounds on conformal field theories. We find an uppe…
We study the distribution of resonances for geometrically finite hyperbolic surfaces of infinite area by countting resonances numerically. The resonances are computed as zeros of the Selberg zeta function, using an algorithm for computation of the zeta function for Schottky groups. Our particular focus is on three aspects of the resonance distribution that have attracted attention recently: the fractal Weyl law, the spectral gap, and the concentration of decay rates.
We prove and explore a family of identities relating lengths of curves and orthogeodesics of hyperbolic surfaces. These identities hold over a large space of metrics including ones with hyperbolic cone points, and in particular, show how to extend a result of the first author to surfaces with cusps. One of the main ingredients in the approach is a partition of the set of orthogeodesics into sets depending on their dynamical behavior, which can be understood geometrically by relating them to geodesics on orbifold surfaces. These orbifold surfaces turn out to be exactly on the boundary of the sp…
We prove that if $X$ is a finite area non-compact hyperbolic surface, then for any $ε>0$, with probability tending to one as $n\to\infty$, a uniformly random degree $n$ Riemannian cover of $X$ has no eigenvalues of the Laplacian in $[0,\frac{1}{4}-ε)$ other than those of $X$, and with the same multiplicities. As a result, using a compactification procedure due to Buser, Burger, and Dodziuk, we settle in the affirmative the question of whether there exist a sequence of closed hyperbolic surfaces with genera tending to infinity and first non-zero eigenvalue of the Laplacian tending to $\frac{1}{…
