Recently, a new stabilizer free weak Galerkin method (SFWG) is proposed, which is easier to implement and more efficient. The main idea is that by letting $j\geq j_{0}$ for some $j_{0}$, where $j$ is the degree of the polynomials used to compute the weak gradients, then the stabilizer term in the regular weak Galerkin method is no longer needed. Later on in \cite{al2019note}, the optimal of such $j_{0}$ for certain types of finite element spaces was given. In this paper, we propose a new efficient SFWG scheme using the lowest possible orders of piecewise polynomials for triangular meshes in $2 D$ with the optimal order of convergence.
The weak Galerkin (WG) finite element method is an effective and flexible general numerical techniques for solving partial differential equations. A simple weak Galerkin finite element method is introduced for second order elliptic problems. First we have proved that stabilizers are no longer needed for this WG element. Then we have proved the supercloseness of order two for the WG finite element solution. The numerical results confirm the theory
A new stabilizer free weak Galerkin (WG) method is introduced and analyzed for the biharmonic equation. Stabilizing/penalty terms are often necessary in the finite element formulations with discontinuous approximations to ensure the stability of the methods. Removal of stabilizers will simplify finite element formulations and reduce programming complexity. This stabilizer free WG method has an ultra simple formulation and can work on general partitions with polygons/polyhedra. Optimal order error estimates in a discrete $H^2$ for $k\ge 2$ and in $L^2$ norm for $k>2$ are established for the cor…
A stabilizer free weak Galerkin (WG) finite element method on polytopal mesh has been introduced in Part I of this paper (J. Comput. Appl. Math, 371 (2020) 112699. arXiv:1906.06634.) Removing stabilizers from discontinuous finite element methods simplifies formulations and reduces programming complexity. The purpose of this paper is to introduce a new WG method without stabilizers on polytopal mesh that has convergence rates one order higher than optimal convergence rates. This method is the first WG method that achieves superconvergence on polytopal mesh. Numerical examples in 2D and 3D are p…
A weak Galerkin (WG) finite element method without stabilizers was introduced in [J. Comput. Appl. Math., 371 (2020). arXiv:1906.06634] on polytopal mesh. Then it was improved in [arXiv:2008.13631] with order one superconvergence. The goal of this paper is to develop a new stabilizer free WG method on polytopal mesh. This method has convergence rates two orders higher than the optimal convergence rates for the corresponding WG solution in both an energy norm and the $L^2$ norm. The numerical examples are tested for low and high order elements in two and three dimensional spaces.
Recently, a new stabilizer free weak Galerkin method (SFWG) is proposed, which is easier to implement. The idea is to raise the degree of polynomials j for computing weak gradient. It is shown that if j>=j0 for some j0, then SFWG achieves the optimal rate of convergence. However, large j will cause some numerical difficulties. To improve the efficiency of SFWG and avoid numerical locking, in this note, we provide the optimal j0 with rigorous mathematical proof.
In this paper, we study the stabilizer-free weak Galerkin methods on polytopal meshes for a class of second order elliptic boundary value problems of divergence form and with gradient nonlinearity in the principal coefficient. With certain assumptions on the nonlinear coefficient, we show that the discrete problem has a unique solution. This is achieved by showing that the associated operator satisfies certain continuity and monotonicity properties. With the help of these properties, we derive optimal error estimates in the energy norm. We present several numerical examples to verify the error…
The weak Galerkin (WG) finite element method is an effective and flexible general numerical technique for solving partial differential equations. It is a natural extension of the classic conforming finite element method for discontinuous approximations, which maintains simple finite element formulation. Stabilizer free weak Galerkin methods further simplify the WG methods and reduce computational complexity. This paper explores the possibility of optimal combination of polynomial spaces that minimize the number of unknowns in the stabilizer free WG schemes without compromising the accuracy of …
A stabilizing/penalty term is often used in finite element methods with discontinuous approximations to enforce connection of discontinuous functions across element boundaries. Removing stabilizers from discontinuous finite element methods will simplify the formulations and reduce programming complexity significantly. The goal of this paper is to introduce a stabilizer free weak Galerkin finite element method for second order elliptic equations on polytopal meshes in 2D or 3D. This new WG method keeps a simple symmetric positive definite form and can work on polygonal/polyheral meshes. Optimal…
In this article, we present and analyze a stabilizer-free $C^0$ weak Galerkin (SF-C0WG) method for solving the biharmonic problem. The SF-C0WG method is formulated in terms of cell unknowns which are $C^0$ continuous piecewise polynomials of degree $k+2$ with $k\geq 0$ and in terms of face unknowns which are discontinuous piecewise polynomials of degree $k+1$. The formulation of this SF-C0WG method is without the stabilized or penalty term and is as simple as the $C^1$ conforming finite element scheme of the biharmonic problem. Optimal order error estimates in a discrete $H^2$-like norm and th…
In this paper, we propose a new stabilizer free and pressure robust WG method for the Stokes equations with super-convergence on polytopal mesh in the primary velocity-pressure formulation. Convergence rates with one order higher than the optimal-order for velocity in both energy-norm and the $L^2$-norm and for pressure in $L^2$-norm are proved in our proposed scheme. The $H$(div)-preserving operator has been constructed based on the polygonal mesh for arbitrary polynomial degrees and employed in the body source assembling to break the locking phenomenon induced by poor mass conservation in th…
In this paper, we present a conforming discontinuous Galerkin (CDG) finite element method for Brinkman equations. The velocity stabilizer is removed by employing the higher degree polynomials to compute the weak gradient. The theoretical analysis shows that the CDG method is actually stable and accurate for the Brinkman equations. Optimal order error estimates are established in $H^1$ and $L^2$ norm. Finally, numerical experiments verify the stability and accuracy of the CDG numerical scheme.
Analysis of Galerkin-mixed FEMs for incompressible miscible flow in porous media has been investigated extensively in the last several decades. Of particular interest in practical applications is the lowest-order Galerkin-mixed method, { in which a linear Lagrange FE approximation is used for the concentration and the lowest-order Raviart-Thomas FE approximation is used for the velocity/pressure. The previous works only showed the first-order accuracy of the method in $L^2$-norm in spatial direction,} which however is not optimal and valid only under certain extra restrictions on both time ste…
A new discontinuous Galerkin finite element method for the Stokes equations is developed in the primary velocity-pressure formulation. This method employs discontinuous polynomials for both velocity and pressure on general polygonal/polyhedral meshes. Most finite element methods with discontinuous approximation have one or more stabilizing terms for velocity and for pressure to guarantee stability and convergence. This new finite element method has the standard conforming finite element formulation, without any velocity or pressure stabilizers. Optimal-order error estimates are established for…
A simplified primal-dual weak Galerkin (S-PDWG) finite element method is designed for the Fokker-Planck type equation with non-smooth diffusion tensor and drift vector. The discrete system resulting from S-PDWG method has significantly fewer degrees of freedom compared with the one resulting from the PDWG method proposed by Wang-Wang \cite{WW-fp-2018}. Furthermore, the condition number of the S-PDWG method is smaller than the PDWG method \cite{WW-fp-2018} due to the introduction of a new stabilizer, which provides a potential for designing fast algorithms. Optimal order error estimates for the…
The discontinuous Galerkin finite element method (DGFEM) developed by Rhebergen et al. (2008) offers a robust method for solving systems of nonconservative hyperbolic partial differential equations but, as we show here, does not satisfactorily deal with topography in shallow water flows at lowest order (so-called DG0, or equivalently finite volume). In particular, numerical solutions of the space-DG0 discretised one-dimensional shallow water equations over varying topography are not truly `well-balanced'. A numerical scheme is well-balanced if trivial steady states are satisfied in the numeric…
Two de Rham complex sequences of the finite element spaces are introduced for weak finite element functions and weak derivatives developed in the weak Galerkin (WG) finite element methods on general polyhedral elements. One of the sequences uses polynomials of equal order for all the finite element spaces involved in the sequence and the other one uses polynomials of naturally decending orders. It is shown that the diagrams in both de Rham complexes commute for general polyhedral elements. The exactness of one of the complexes is established for the lowest order element.
This article introduces a weak Galerkin (WG) finite element method for quad-curl problems in three dimensions. It is proved that the proposed WG method is stable and accurate in an optimal order of error estimates for the exact solution in discrete norms. In addition, an $L^2$ error estimate in an optimal order except the lowest orders $k=1, 2$ is derived for the WG solution. Some numerical experiments are conducted to verify the efficiency and accuracy of our WG method and furthermore a superconvergence has been observed from the numerical results.
The popular (piecewise) quadratic schemes for the biharmonic equation based on triangles are the nonconforming Morley finite element, the discontinuous Galerkin, the $C^0$ interior penalty, and the WOPSIP schemes. Those methods are modified in their right-hand side $F\in H^{-2}(Ω)$ replaced by $F\circ (JI_{\rm M}) $ and then are quasi-optimal in their respective discrete norms. The smoother $JI_{\rm M}$ is defined for a piecewise smooth input function by a (generalized) Morley interpolation $I_{\rm M}$ followed by a companion operator $J$. An abstract framework for the error analysis in the en…
We consider a space-time variational formulation of the second-order wave equation, where integration by parts is also applied with respect to the time variable. Conforming tensor-product finite element discretisations with piecewise polynomials of this space-time variational formulation require a CFL condition to ensure stability. To overcome this restriction in the case of piecewise multilinear, continuous ansatz and test functions, a stabilisation is well-known, which leads to an unconditionally stable space-time finite element method. In this work, we generalise this stabilisation idea fro…
Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) discretizations with exact representation of the geometry and local polynomial degree adaptivity are revisited. Hybridization techniques are employed to reduce the computational cost of DG approximations and devise the hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) method. Exact geometry described by non-uniform rational B-splines (NURBS) is integrated into HDG using the framework of the NURBS-enhanced finite element method (NEFEM). Moreover, optimal convergence and superconvergence properties of HDG-Voigt formulation in presence of symmetric second-order tensors are exp…
