The weak Galerkin (WG) finite element method is an effective and flexible general numerical technique for solving partial differential equations. It is a natural extension of the classic conforming finite element method for discontinuous approximations, which maintains simple finite element formulation. Stabilizer free weak Galerkin methods further simplify the WG methods and reduce computational complexity. This paper explores the possibility of optimal combination of polynomial spaces that minimize the number of unknowns in the stabilizer free WG schemes without compromising the accuracy of the numerical approximation. A new stabilizer free weak Galerkin finite element method is proposed and analyzed with polynomial degree reduction. To achieve such a goal, a new definition of weak gradient is introduced. Error estimates of optimal order are established for the corresponding WG approximations in both a discrete $H^1$ norm and the standard $L^2$ norm. The numerical examples are tested on various meshes and confirm the theory.
The weak Galerkin (WG) finite element method is an effective and flexible general numerical techniques for solving partial differential equations. A simple weak Galerkin finite element method is introduced for second order elliptic problems. First we have proved that stabilizers are no longer needed for this WG element. Then we have proved the supercloseness of order two for the WG finite element solution. The numerical results confirm the theory
A new stabilizer free weak Galerkin (WG) method is introduced and analyzed for the biharmonic equation. Stabilizing/penalty terms are often necessary in the finite element formulations with discontinuous approximations to ensure the stability of the methods. Removal of stabilizers will simplify finite element formulations and reduce programming complexity. This stabilizer free WG method has an ultra simple formulation and can work on general partitions with polygons/polyhedra. Optimal order error estimates in a discrete $H^2$ for $k\ge 2$ and in $L^2$ norm for $k>2$ are established for the cor…
Recently, a new stabilizer free weak Galerkin method (SFWG) is proposed, which is easier to implement and more efficient. The main idea is that by letting $j\geq j_{0}$ for some $j_{0}$, where $j$ is the degree of the polynomials used to compute the weak gradients, then the stabilizer term in the regular weak Galerkin method is no longer needed. Later on in \cite{al2019note}, the optimal of such $j_{0}$ for certain types of finite element spaces was given. In this paper, we propose a new efficient SFWG scheme using the lowest possible orders of piecewise polynomials for triangular meshes in $2…
A stabilizer free weak Galerkin (WG) finite element method on polytopal mesh has been introduced in Part I of this paper (J. Comput. Appl. Math, 371 (2020) 112699. arXiv:1906.06634.) Removing stabilizers from discontinuous finite element methods simplifies formulations and reduces programming complexity. The purpose of this paper is to introduce a new WG method without stabilizers on polytopal mesh that has convergence rates one order higher than optimal convergence rates. This method is the first WG method that achieves superconvergence on polytopal mesh. Numerical examples in 2D and 3D are p…
A weak Galerkin (WG) finite element method without stabilizers was introduced in [J. Comput. Appl. Math., 371 (2020). arXiv:1906.06634] on polytopal mesh. Then it was improved in [arXiv:2008.13631] with order one superconvergence. The goal of this paper is to develop a new stabilizer free WG method on polytopal mesh. This method has convergence rates two orders higher than the optimal convergence rates for the corresponding WG solution in both an energy norm and the $L^2$ norm. The numerical examples are tested for low and high order elements in two and three dimensional spaces.
Recently, a new stabilizer free weak Galerkin method (SFWG) is proposed, which is easier to implement. The idea is to raise the degree of polynomials j for computing weak gradient. It is shown that if j>=j0 for some j0, then SFWG achieves the optimal rate of convergence. However, large j will cause some numerical difficulties. To improve the efficiency of SFWG and avoid numerical locking, in this note, we provide the optimal j0 with rigorous mathematical proof.
In this paper, we study the stabilizer-free weak Galerkin methods on polytopal meshes for a class of second order elliptic boundary value problems of divergence form and with gradient nonlinearity in the principal coefficient. With certain assumptions on the nonlinear coefficient, we show that the discrete problem has a unique solution. This is achieved by showing that the associated operator satisfies certain continuity and monotonicity properties. With the help of these properties, we derive optimal error estimates in the energy norm. We present several numerical examples to verify the error…
A stabilizing/penalty term is often used in finite element methods with discontinuous approximations to enforce connection of discontinuous functions across element boundaries. Removing stabilizers from discontinuous finite element methods will simplify the formulations and reduce programming complexity significantly. The goal of this paper is to introduce a stabilizer free weak Galerkin finite element method for second order elliptic equations on polytopal meshes in 2D or 3D. This new WG method keeps a simple symmetric positive definite form and can work on polygonal/polyheral meshes. Optimal…
In this article, we present and analyze a stabilizer-free $C^0$ weak Galerkin (SF-C0WG) method for solving the biharmonic problem. The SF-C0WG method is formulated in terms of cell unknowns which are $C^0$ continuous piecewise polynomials of degree $k+2$ with $k\geq 0$ and in terms of face unknowns which are discontinuous piecewise polynomials of degree $k+1$. The formulation of this SF-C0WG method is without the stabilized or penalty term and is as simple as the $C^1$ conforming finite element scheme of the biharmonic problem. Optimal order error estimates in a discrete $H^2$-like norm and th…
In this paper, we propose a new stabilizer free and pressure robust WG method for the Stokes equations with super-convergence on polytopal mesh in the primary velocity-pressure formulation. Convergence rates with one order higher than the optimal-order for velocity in both energy-norm and the $L^2$-norm and for pressure in $L^2$-norm are proved in our proposed scheme. The $H$(div)-preserving operator has been constructed based on the polygonal mesh for arbitrary polynomial degrees and employed in the body source assembling to break the locking phenomenon induced by poor mass conservation in th…
In this paper, we present a conforming discontinuous Galerkin (CDG) finite element method for Brinkman equations. The velocity stabilizer is removed by employing the higher degree polynomials to compute the weak gradient. The theoretical analysis shows that the CDG method is actually stable and accurate for the Brinkman equations. Optimal order error estimates are established in $H^1$ and $L^2$ norm. Finally, numerical experiments verify the stability and accuracy of the CDG numerical scheme.
A new discontinuous Galerkin finite element method for the Stokes equations is developed in the primary velocity-pressure formulation. This method employs discontinuous polynomials for both velocity and pressure on general polygonal/polyhedral meshes. Most finite element methods with discontinuous approximation have one or more stabilizing terms for velocity and for pressure to guarantee stability and convergence. This new finite element method has the standard conforming finite element formulation, without any velocity or pressure stabilizers. Optimal-order error estimates are established for…
A simplified primal-dual weak Galerkin (S-PDWG) finite element method is designed for the Fokker-Planck type equation with non-smooth diffusion tensor and drift vector. The discrete system resulting from S-PDWG method has significantly fewer degrees of freedom compared with the one resulting from the PDWG method proposed by Wang-Wang \cite{WW-fp-2018}. Furthermore, the condition number of the S-PDWG method is smaller than the PDWG method \cite{WW-fp-2018} due to the introduction of a new stabilizer, which provides a potential for designing fast algorithms. Optimal order error estimates for the…
Mathematical modeling often yields linear dynamical systems in science and engineering. We change physical parameters of the system into random variables to perform an uncertainty quantification. The stochastic Galerkin method yields a larger linear dynamical system, whose solution represents an approximation of random processes. A model order reduction (MOR) of the Galerkin system is advantageous due to the high dimensionality. However, asymptotic stability may be lost in some MOR techniques. In Galerkin-type MOR methods, the stability can be guaranteed by a transformation to a dissipative fo…
Variational formulations of time-dependent PDEs in space and time yield $(d+1)$-dimensional problems to be solved numerically. This increases the number of unknowns as well as the storage amount. On the other hand, this approach enables adaptivity in space and time as well as model reduction w.r.t. both type of variables. In this paper, we show that matrix oriented techniques can significantly reduce the computational timings for solving the arising linear systems outperforming both time-stepping schemes and other solvers.
The present work focuses on the geometric parametrization and the reduced order modeling of the Stokes equation. We discuss the concept of a parametrized geometry and its application within a reduced order modeling technique. The full order model is based on the discontinuous Galerkin method with an interior penalty formulation. We introduce the broken Sobolev spaces as well as the weak formulation required for an affine parameter dependency. The operators are transformed from a fixed domain to a parameter dependent domain using the affine parameter dependency. The proper orthogonal decomposit…
This work presents the windowed space-time least-squares Petrov-Galerkin method (WST-LSPG) for model reduction of nonlinear parameterized dynamical systems. WST-LSPG is a generalization of the space-time least-squares Petrov-Galerkin method (ST-LSPG). The main drawback of ST-LSPG is that it requires solving a dense space-time system with a space-time basis that is calculated over the entire global time domain, which can be unfeasible for large-scale applications. Instead of using a temporally-global space-time trial subspace and minimizing the discrete-in-time full-order model (FOM) residual o…
This work proposes a windowed least-squares (WLS) approach for model-reduction of dynamical systems. The proposed approach sequentially minimizes the time-continuous full-order-model residual within a low-dimensional space-time trial subspace over time windows. The approach comprises a generalization of existing model reduction approaches, as particular instances of the methodology recover Galerkin, least-squares Petrov-Galerkin (LSPG), and space-time LSPG projection. In addition, the approach addresses key deficiencies in existing model-reduction techniques, e.g., the dependence of LSPG and s…
A novel domain-decomposition least-squares Petrov-Galerkin (DD-LSPG) model-reduction method applicable to parameterized systems of nonlinear algebraic equations (e.g., arising from discretizing a parameterized partial-differential-equations problem) is proposed. In contrast with previous works, we adopt an algebraically non-overlapping decomposition strategy rather than a spatial-decomposition strategy, which facilitates application to different spatial-discretization schemes. Rather than constructing a low-dimensional subspace for the entire state space in a monolithic fashion, the methodolog…
Several nonlinear model reduction techniques are compared for the three cases of the non-parallel version of the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation, the transient regime of flow past a cylinder at $Re=100$ and fully developed flow past a cylinder at the same Reynolds number. The linear terms of the governing equations are reduced by Galerkin projection onto a POD basis of the flow state, while the reduced nonlinear convection terms are obtained either by a Galerkin projection onto the same state basis, by a Galerkin projection onto a POD basis representing the nonlinearities or by applying the Disc…
Model reduction of the compressible Euler equations based on proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) and Galerkin orthogonality or least-squares residual minimization requires the selection of inner product spaces in which to perform projections and measure norms. The most popular choice is the vector-valued L2(Ω) inner product space. This choice, however, yields dimensionally-inconsistent reduced-order model (ROM) formulations which often lack robustness. In this work, we try to address this weakness by studying a set of dimensionally-consistent inner products with application to the compressib…

In this work, we propose a local multiscale model reduction approach for the time-domain scalar wave equation in a heterogenous media. A fine mesh is used to capture the heterogeneities of the coefficient field, and the equation is solved globally on a coarse mesh in the discontinuous Galerkin discretization setting. The main idea of the model reduction approach is to extract dominant modes in local spectral problems for representation of important features, construct multiscale basis functions in coarse oversampled regions by constraint energy minimization problems, and perform a Petrov-Galer…
In this paper, we consider the constrained energy minimizing generalized multiscale finite element method (CEM-GMsFEM) with discontinuous Galerkin (DG) coupling for the linear elasticity equations in highly heterogeneous and high contrast media. We will introduce the construction of a DG version of the CEM-GMsFEM, such as auxiliary basis functions and offline basis functions. The DG version of the method offers some advantages such as flexibility in coarse grid construction and sparsity of resulting discrete systems. Moreover, to our best knowledge, this is the first time where the proof of th…
We propose a probabilistic way for reducing the cost of classical projection-based model order reduction methods for parameter-dependent linear equations. A reduced order model is here approximated from its random sketch, which is a set of low-dimensional random projections of the reduced approximation space and the spaces of associated residuals. This approach exploits the fact that the residuals associated with approximations in low-dimensional spaces are also contained in low-dimensional spaces. We provide conditions on the dimension of the random sketch for the resulting reduced order mode…
We construct solvers for an isogeometric multi-patch discretization, where the patches are coupled via a discontinuous Galerkin approach, which allows the consideration of discretizations that do not match on the interfaces. We solve the resulting linear system using a Dual-Primal IsogEometric Tearing and Interconnecting (IETI-DP) method. We are interested in solving the arising patch-local problems using iterative solvers since this allows the reduction of the memory footprint. We solve the patch-local problems approximately using the Fast Diagonalization method, which is known to be robust i…
