We show that the causal properties of asymptotically flat spacetimes depend on their dimensionality: while the time-like future of any point in the past conformal infinity $\mathcal{I}^-$ contains the whole of the future conformal infinity $\mathcal{I}^+$ in $(2+1)$ and $(3+1)$ dimensional Schwarzschild spacetimes, this property (which we call the Penrose property) does not hold for $(d+1)$ dimensional Schwarzschild if $d>3$. We also show that the Penrose property holds for the Kerr solution in $(3+1)$ dimensions, and discuss the connection with scattering theory in the presence of positive mass.
We construct a static axisymmetric wormhole from the gravitational field of two Schwarzschild particles which are kept in equilibrium by strings (ropes) extending to infinity. The wormhole is obtained by matching two three-dimensional timelike surfaces surrounding each of the particles and thus spacetime becomes non-simply connected. Although the matching will not be exact in general it is possible to make the error arbitrarily small by assuming that the distance between the particles is much larger than the radius of the wormhole mouths. Whenever the masses of the two wormhole mouths are diff…
We give a new, wave-like solution of the field equations of five-dimensional relativity. In ordinary three-dimensional space, the waves resemble de Broglie or matter waves, whose puzzling behaviour can be better understood in terms of one or more extra dimensions. Causality is appropriately defined by a null higher-dimensional interval. It may be possible to test the properties of these waves in the laboratory.
We study charged black hole solutions in 4-dimensional (4D) Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet-Maxwell theory to the linearized perturbation level. We first compute the shear viscosity to entropy density ratio. We then demonstrate how bulk causal structure analysis imposes a upper bound on the Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant in the AdS space. Causality constrains the value of Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant $α_{GB}$ to be bounded by $α_{GB}\leq 0$ as $D\rightarrow 4$.
In recent years, interest in extra dimensions has experienced a dramatic increase. A common practice has been to look for higher-dimensional generalizations of four-dimensional solutions to the Einstein equations. In this vein, we have found a static, spherically symmetric solution to the 5-d Einstein equations. Certain aspects of this solution are very different from the 4-d Schwarzschild solution. However, in observationally accessible regions, the geodesics of the two solutions are essentially the same.
The entropy of the four dimensional Schwarzschild black hole is derived by mapping it onto a configuration of intersecting branes with four charges. This configuration is obtained by performing several boosts and dualities on a neutral black brane of M-theory to which the Schwarzschild black hole is related by trivial compactification. The infinite boost limit is well-defined and corresponds to extremality where the intersecting brane configuration is a marginal one on which a standard microscopic counting of the entropy can be safely performed. The result reproduces exactly the Bekenstein-Haw…
Maximally extended, explicit and regular coverings of the Schwarzschild - de Sitter family of vacua are given, first in spacetime (generalizing a result due to Israel) and then for all dimensions $D$ (assuming a $D-2$ sphere). It is shown that these coordinates offer important advantages over the well known Kruskal - Szekeres procedure.
For n+1 dimensional asymptotically AdS spacetimes which have holographic duals on their n dimensional conformal boundaries, we show that the imposition of causality on the boundary theory is sufficient to prove positivity of mass for the spacetime when n > 2, without the assumption of any local energy condition. We make crucial use of a generalization of the time-delay formula calculated in gr-qc/9404019, which relates the time delay of a bulk null curve with respect to a boundary null geodesic to the Ashtekar-Magnon mass of the spacetime. We also discuss holographic causality for the negative…
We globally embed (3+1)-dimensional Schwarzschild and Schwarzschild-AdS black holes in massive gravity into (5+2)-dimensional flat spacetimes. Making use of embedding coordinates, we directly obtain the generalized Hawking, Unruh and freely falling temperatures in a Schwarzschild and Schwarzschild-AdS black hole due to massive graviton effects.
It was shown recently that in four dimensions scalar sources with fixed proper acceleration minimally coupled to a massless Klein-Gordon field lead to the same responses when they are (i) uniformly accelerated in Minkowski spacetime (in the inertial vacuum) and (ii) static in the Schwarzschild spacetime (in the Unruh vacuum). Here we show that this equivalence is broken if the spacetime dimension is more than four.
We study the constraints coming from local causality requirement in various $2+1$ dimensional dynamical theories of gravity. In topologically massive gravity, with a single parity non-invariant massive degree of freedom, and in new massive gravity, with two massive spin-$2$ degrees of freedom, causality and unitarity are compatible with each other and both require the Newton's constant to be negative. In their extensions, such as the Born-Infeld gravity and the minimal massive gravity the situation is similar and quite different from their higher dimensional counterparts, such as quadratic (e.…
The hypothesis that the causal properties of space-time, as well as other properties of physical systems like unitarity, charge conservation, etc., might be decided by the higher dimensional structure (in particular, higher-dimensional physical laws), rather than by the four-dimensional one, is explored in order to evade the most awkward problems of higher-dimensional theories with compact extra time-like dimensions: violation of causality and of unitarity.
It has recently been shown that the Hawking evaporation process of $(3+1)$-dimensional Schwarzschild black holes is characterized by the dimensionless ratio $η\equivτ_{\text{gap}}/τ_{\text{emission}}\gg1$, where $τ_{\text{gap}}$ is the characteristic time gap between the emissions of successive Hawking quanta and $τ_{\text{emission}}$ is the characteristic timescale required for an individual Hawking quantum to be emitted from the Schwarzschild black hole. This strong inequality implies that the Hawking cascade of gravitons from a $(3+1)$-dimensional Schwarzschild black hole is extremely {\it …
Linear perturbations for a one parameter family of stationary, closed Nambu-Goto strings winding around a flat torus in the five-dimensional Schwarzschild spacetime have been studied. It has been shown that this problem is solvable in the sense that frequency spectra and perturbation modes can be expressed only with arithmetic operations and radicals. It has been proven that the Nambu-Goto strings belonging to this family are always unstable, no matter how they are located at almost flat region distant from the event horizon.
We obtain a high-dimensional Schwarzschild black hole solution in the scalar-tensor-vector gravity (STVG), and then analyze the influence of parameter $α$ associated with a deviation of the STVG theory from General Relativity on event horizons and Hawking temperature. We calculate the quasinormal mode frequencies of massless scalar field perturbations for the high-dimensional Schwarzschild STVG black hole by using the sixth-order WKB approximation method and the unstable null geodesic method in the eikonal limit. The results show that the increase of parameter $α$ makes the scalar waves decay …
We determine the quasinormal frequencies for all gravitational perturbations of the d-dimensional Schwarzschild black hole, in the infinite damping limit. Using the potentials for gravitational perturbations derived recently by Ishibashi and Kodama, we show that in all cases the asymptotic real part of the frequency is proportional to the Hawking temperature with a coefficient of log 3. Via the correspondence principle, this leads directly to an equally spaced entropy spectrum. We comment on the possible implications for the spacing of eigenvalues of the Virasoro generator in the associated ne…
We study the problem of a four-dimensional brane lying in the five-dimensional degenerate Schwarzschild-de Sitter (Nariai) black hole, in five-dimensional $F(R)$-gravity. We show that there cannot exist the brane in the Nariai bulk space except the case that the brane tension vanishes. We demonstrate that the five-dimensional Nariai bulk is unstable in a large region of the parameter space. In particular, the Nariai bulk can have classical (anti-)evaporation instabilities. The bulk instability back-reacts on the four-dimensional brane, in case that the brane tension vanishes, and the unstable …
We derive the static Schwarzschild-Tangherlini metric by extracting the classical contributions from the multi-loop vertex functions of a graviton emitted from a massive scalar field. At each loop orders the classical contribution is proportional to a unique master integral given by the massless sunset integral. By computing the scattering amplitudes up to three-loop order in general dimension, we explicitly derive the expansion of the metric up to the fourth post-Minkowskian order $O(G_N^4)$ in four, five and six dimensions. There are ultraviolet divergences that are cancelled with the introd…
Hawking flux from the Schwarzschild black hole with a global monopole is obtained by using Robinson and Wilczek's method. Adopting a dimension reduction technique, the effective quantum field in the (3+1)--dimensional global monopole background can be described by an infinite collection of the (1+1)--dimensional massless fields if neglecting the ingoing modes near the horizon, where the gravitational anomaly can be cancelled by the (1+1)--dimensional black body radiation at the Hawking temperature.
We calculate the maximum interior volume, enclosed by the event horizon, of a ($1+D$)-dimensional Schwarzschild black hole. Taking into account the mass change due to Hawking radiation, we show that the volume increases towards the end of the evaporation. This fact is not new as it has been observed earlier for four dimensional case. The interesting point we observe is that this increase rate decreases towards the higher value of space dimensions $D$; i.e. it is a decelerated expansion of volume with the increase of spacial dimensions. This implies that for a sufficiently large $D$, the maximu…
In this note the Schwarzschild and Kerr solutions are constructed for 3 space and $N$ time dimensions. Solutions, by construction, possesses symmetry with respect to rotations in time volume.
The metric of arbitrary dimensional Schwarzschild black hole in the background of Friedman-Robertson-Walker universe is presented in the cosmic coordinates system. In particular, the arbitrary dimensional Schwarzschild-de Sitter metric is rewritten in the Schwarzschild coordinates system and basing on which the even more generalized higher dimensional Schwarzschild-de Sitter metric with another extra dimensions is found. The generalized solution shows that the cosmological constant may roots in the extra dimensions of space.
We study algebraically special perturbations of a generalized Schwarzschild solution in any number of dimensions. There are two motivations. First, to learn whether there exist interesting higher-dimensional algebraically special solutions beyond the known ones. Second, algebraically special perturbations present an obstruction to the unique reconstruction of general metric perturbations from gauge-invariant variables analogous to the Teukolsky scalars and it is desirable to know the extent of this non-uniqueness. In four dimensions, our results generalize those of Couch and Newman, who found …
We obtain an analytic expression for the highly damped asymptotic quasinormal mode frequencies of the $d\geq 5$-dimensional Schwarzschild black hole modified by the Gauss-Bonnet term, which appears in string derived models of gravity. The analytic expression is obtained under the string inspired assumption that there exists a minimum length scale in the system and in the limit when the coupling in front of the Gauss-Bonnet term in the action is small. Although there are several similarities of this geometry with that of the Schwarzschild black hole, the asymptotic quasinormal mode frequencies …
Explicit regular coordinates that cover all of the Tangherlini solutions (Schwarzschild black holes of dimension $D>4$) are given. The coordinates reduce to Israel coordinates for D=4.
The system of extended objects interplaying with a black hole describes or mimics various gravitational phenomena. In this brief paper, we report the results of stability analysis of codimension-one Dirac-Nambu-Goto branes rest at the equatorial plane of $d$-dimensional spherical black holes, including the Schwarzschild and Schwarzschild-(anti-)de Sitter black holes. For the Schwarzschild and Schwarzschild-anti-de Sitter backgrounds the stability of branes is shown analytically by means of a deformation technique. In contrast, for the Schwarzschild-de Sitter background we demonstrate with the …
The statistical entropy of a Schwarzschild black string in five dimensions is obtained by counting the black string states which form a representation of the near-horizon conformal symmetry with a central charge. The statistical entropy of the string agrees with its Bekenstein-Hawking entropy as well as that of the Schwarzschild black hole in four dimensions. The choice of the string length which gives the Virasoro algebra also reproduces the precise value of the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy and lies inside the stability bound of the string.
We investigate inner structure of Schwarzschild black hole on a five-dimensional spacetime S^3xR^2. To do this, we exploit a fünfbein scheme. In particular, we construct an equation of state of hydrostatic equilibrium for the five-dimensional Schwarzschild black hole, which is a five-dimensional version of the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff equation on four-dimensional manifold. We also investigate uniform density interior configuration of the five-dimensional black hole which consists of incompressible fluid of density, to find a general relativistic expression for pressure.
In this paper we study a static cyclic symmetric traversable wormhole in $(2+1)-$dimensional gravity coupled to nonlinear electrodynamics in anti-de Sitter spacetime. The solution is characterized by three parameters: mass $M$, cosmological constant $Λ$ and one electromagnetic parameter, $q_α$. The causality of this spacetime is studied, determining its maximal extension and constructing then the corresponding Kruskal-Szekeres and Penrose diagrams. The quasinormal modes (QNMs) that result from considering a massive scalar test field in the wormhole background are determined by solving in exact…
We obtain an analytical expression for the electromagnetic quasinormal spectrum of the higher-dimensional nearly-extremal Schwarzschild-de Sitter black hole. The WKB method is used to verify the results, and a comparison with known results from previous works is briefly made as well.
We investigate the classical stability of the higher-dimensional Schwarzschild black holes against linear perturbations, in the framework of a gauge-invariant formalism for gravitational perturbations of maximally symmetric black holes, recently developed by the authors. The perturbations are classified into the tensor, vector, and scalar-type modes according to their tensorial behaviour on the spherical section of the background metric, where the last two modes correspond respectively to the axial- and the polar-mode in the four-dimensional situation. We show that, for each mode of the pertur…
We consider branes embedded in spacetimes of codimension one and two, with a warped metric tensor for the subspace parallel to the brane. We study a variety of brane-world solutions arising by introducing a Schwarzschild-like black hole metric on the brane and we investigate the properties of the corresponding higher-dimensional spacetime. We demonstrate that normalizable bulk modes lead to a vanishing flow of energy through the naked singularities. From this point of view, these singularities are harmless.
The entropy of a seven dimensional Schwarzschild black hole of arbitrary large radius is obtained by a mapping onto a near extremal self-dual three-brane whose partition function can be evaluated. The three-brane arises from duality after submitting a neutral blackbrane, from which the Schwarzschild black hole can be obtained by compactification, to an infinite boost in non compact eleven dimensional space-time and then to a Kaluza-Klein compactification. This limit can be defined in precise terms and yields the Bekenstein-Hawking value up to a factor of order one which can be set to be exactl…
Euclidean gravity method has been successful in computing logarithmic corrections to extremal black hole entropy in terms of low energy data, and gives results in perfect agreement with the microscopic results in string theory. Motivated by this success we apply Euclidean gravity to compute logarithmic corrections to the entropy of various non-extremal black holes in different dimensions, taking special care of integration over the zero modes and keeping track of the ensemble in which the computation is done. These results provide strong constraint on any ultraviolet completion of the theory i…
We study the thermodynamic properties of high dimensional Schwarzschild de Sitter spacetimes with the consideration of quantum effects. It is shown that by considering the cosmological constant as a variable state parameter and adding an extra term which denotes the vacuum energy, both the differential and integral mass formulas of the first law of Schwarzschild de Sitter spacetimes can be directly derived from the general Schwarzschild de Sitter metrics in a simple and natural way. Furthermore, after taking quantum effects into account, we can see that the cosmological constant must decrease …
Vacuum spherically symmetric Einstein gravity in $N\ge 4$ dimensions can be cast in a two-dimensional conformal nonlinear sigma model form by first integrating on the $(N-2)$-dimensional (hyper)sphere and then performing a canonical transformation. The conformal sigma model is described by two fields which are related to the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner mass and to the radius of the $(N-2)$-dimensional (hyper)sphere, respectively. By quantizing perturbatively the theory we estimate the quantum corrections to the ADM mass of a black hole.
The main part of this work is to present a formula allowing a microscopic derivation of the Schwarzschild black hole entropy in arbitrary dimension. More generally, this Cardy-like formula applies for static black holes whose gravitational entropy scales as a power of the temperature, and is also effective for negative heat capacity solutions. The formula involves the scaling power, the black hole mass and the energy of a gravitational soliton identified as the ground state of the theory. The robustness of this formula is verified in the most famous example of solution with negative heat capac…
We prove a sharp inequality for hypersurfaces in the n-dimensional Anti-deSitter-Schwarzschild manifold for general n greater or equal to 3. This inequality generalizes the classical Minkowski inequality for surfaces in the three dimensional Euclidean space, and has a natural interpretation in terms of the Penrose inequality for collapsing null shells of dust. The proof relies on a new monotonicity formula for inverse mean curvature flow, and uses a geometric inequality established by the first author in [3].
Some solutions of the Einstein equations for the eight-dimensional Riemann extension of the classical four-dimensional Schwarzschild metric are considered.
Given a (d+1)-dimensional spacetime (M,g), one can consider the set N of all its null geodesics. If (M,g) is globally hyperbolic then this set is naturally a smooth (2d-1)-manifold. The sky of an event x in M is the set X of all null geodesics through x, and is an embedded submanifold of N diffeomorphic to S^{d-1}. Low conjectured that if d=2 then x,y are causally related in M iff X,Y are linked in N. We prove Low's conjecture for a (large) class of static spacetimes.
The causality structure of two-dimensional manifolds with degenerate metrics is analysed in terms of global solutions of the massless wave equation. Certain novel features emerge. Despite the absence of a traditional Lorentzian Cauchy surface on manifolds with a Euclidean domain it is possible to uniquely determine a global solution (if it exists), satisfying well defined matching conditions at the degeneracy curve, from Cauchy data on certain spacelike curves in the Lorentzian region. In general, however, no global solution satisfying such matching conditions will be consistent with this data…
Following an intriguing heuristic argument of Bekenstein, many researches have suggested during the last four decades that quantized black holes may be characterized by discrete radiation spectra. Bekenstein and Mukhanov (BM) have further argued that the emission spectra of quantized $(3+1)$-dimensional Schwarzschild black holes are expected to be sharp in the sense that the characteristic natural broadening $δω$ of the black-hole radiation lines, as deduced from the quantum time-energy uncertainty principle, is expected to be much smaller than the characteristic frequency spacing $Δω=O(T_{\te…
In this paper we prove the non-linear asymptotic stability of the five-dimensional Schwarzschild metric under biaxial vacuum perturbations. This is the statement that the evolution of (SU(2) x U(1))-symmetric vacuum perturbations of initial data for the five-dimensional Schwarzschild metric finally converges in a suitable sense to a member of the Schwarzschild family. It constitutes the first result proving the existence of non-stationary vacuum black holes arising from asymptotically flat initial data dynamically approaching a stationary solution. In fact, we show quantitative rates of approa…
We construct a static solution for 4+1 dimensional bulk such that the 3+1 dimensional world has a linear warp factor and describes the Schwarzschild-dS_{4} black hole. For m=0 this four dimensional universe and Friedmann Robertson Walker universe are related with an explicit coordinate transformation. We emphasize that for linear warp factors the effect of bulk on the brane world shows up as the dS_{4} background which is favored by the big bang cosmology.
We observe that Khovanov homology detects causality in $(2+1)$-dimensional globally hyperbolic spacetimes whose Cauchy surface is homeomorphic to $\mathbb R^2$
We obtain a new self-similar solution to the Einstein's equations in four-dimensions, representing the collapse of a spherically symmetric, minimally coupled, massless, scalar field. Depending on the value of certain parameters, this solution represents the formation of naked singularities and black holes. Since the black holes are identified as the Schwarzschild ones, one may naturally see how these black holes are produced as remnants of the scalar field collapse.
We briefly revisit the Schwarzschild-de Sitter solution in the context of five-dimensional general relativity. We obtain a class of five-dimensional solutions of Einstein vacuum field equations into which the four-dimensional Schwarzschild-de Sitter space can be locally and isometrically embedded. We show that this class of solutions is well-behaved in the limit of lambda approaching zero. Applying the same procedure to the de Sitter cosmological model in five dimensions we obtain a class of embedding spaces which are similarly well-behaved in this limit. These examples demonstrate that the pr…
Exploiting the five-dimensional Schwarzschild black hole, we study the geometrical natures of the higher dimensional black hole to yield the (6+1) dimensional global embedding Minkowski space structure. We next obtain the Hawking temperature on this five-dimensional manifold, whose result is different from the four-dimensional one. On the contrary, the radial component of the Einstein equation for the massive particles or photons on the five-dimensional spacetime is shown to have the same form as the four-dimensional black hole one. Moreover, we construct the effective potential on equatorial …
In previous works we have studied spin-3/2 fields near 4-dimensional Schwarzschild black holes. The techniques we developed in that case have now been extended here to show that it is possible to determine the potential of spin-3/2 fields near $D$-dimensional black holes by exploiting the radial symmetry of the system. This removes the need to use the Newman-Penrose formalism, which is difficult to extend to $D$-dimensional space-times. In this paper we will derive a general $D$-dimensional gauge invariant effective potential for spin-3/2 fields near black hole systems. We then use this potent…
We present first results obtained with a 3+1 dimensional adaptive mesh code in numerical general relativity. The adaptive mesh is used in conjunction with a standard ADM code for the evolution of a dynamically sliced Schwarzschild spacetime (geodesic slicing). We argue that adaptive mesh is particularly natural in the context of general relativity, where apart from adaptive mesh refinement for numerical efficiency one may want to use the built in flexibility to do numerical relativity on coordinate patches.
