In this paper, we prove a sharp local well-posedness result for spherically symmetric solutions to quasilinear wave equations with rough initial data, when the spatial dimension is three or higher. Our approach is based on Morawetz type local energy estimates with fractional regularity for linear wave equations with variable $C^1$ coefficients, which rely on multiplier method, weighted Littlewood-Paley theory, duality and interpolation. Together with weighted linear and nonlinear estimates (including weighted trace estimates, Hardy's inequality, fractional chain rule and fractional Leibniz rule) which are adapted for the problem, the well-posed result is proved by iteration. In addition, our argument yields almost global existence for $n=3$ and global existence for $n\ge 4$, when the initial data are small, spherically symmetric with almost critical Sobolev regularity.
We establish sharp geometric $C^{1+α}$ regularity estimates for bounded weak solutions of evolution equations of $p$-Laplacian type. Our approach is based on geometric tangential methods, and makes use of a systematic oscillation mechanism combined with an adjusted intrinsic scaling argument.
Weighted good-$λ$ type inequalities and Muckenhoupt-Wheeden type bounds are obtained for gradients of solutions to a class of quasilinear elliptic equations with measure data. Such results are obtained globally over sufficiently flat domains in $\mathbb{R}^n$ in the sense of Reifenberg. The principal operator here is modeled after the $p$-Laplacian, where for the first time singular case $\frac{3n-2}{2n-1}<p\leq 2-\frac{1}{n}$ is considered. Those bounds lead to useful compactness criteria for solution sets of quasilinear elliptic equations with measure data. As an application, sharp existence…
We are interested in the three-dimensional quasilinear wave equations with null condition. Global existence and pointwise decay for this model have been proved in the celebrated works of Klainerman \cite{Klainerman86} and Christodoulou \cite{Christodoulou86} for small smooth initial data. In this work, we illustrate the precise pointwise asymptotic behavior of the solutions for initial data posed on a hyperboloid and show that the decay rate $v^{-1}u^{-1}$ is optimal for a generic set of initial data.
In this article we establish sharp $C^{1,α}$ estimates for weak solutions of singular and degenerate quasilinear elliptic equation $$-\,div\, a(x, \nabla u) = f,$$ which includes the standard $p$-laplacean equation with varying coefficients as a special case. The sharp exponent $α$ is asymptotically optimal and is determined by the Hölder regularity of the coefficients, the exponent $p$ and the $q$-integrability of the source term $f$.
In this paper, we study quasilinear elliptic equations with the nonlinearity modelled after the $p(x)$-Laplacian on nonsmooth domains and obtain sharp Calderón-Zygmund type estimates in the variable exponent setting. In a recent work of \cite{BO}, the estimates obtained were strictly above the natural exponent and hence there was a gap between the natural energy estimates and estimates above $p(x)$, see \eqref{energy_introduction} and \eqref{byun_ok_estimate}. Here, we bridge this gap to obtain the end point case of the estimates obtained in \cite{BO}, see \eqref{our_estimate}. In order to do …
The commuting vector fields approach, devised for strichartz estimates in [13], was developed for proving the local well-posedness in the Sobolev spaces $H^s$ with $s>2+\frac{2-\sqrt{3}}{2}$ for general quasi-linear wave equation in ${\mathbb R}^{1+3}$ by Klainerman and Rodnianski. Via this approach they obtained the local well-posedness in $H^s$ with $s>2$ for $(1+3)$ vacuum Einstein equations, by taking advantage of the vanishing Ricci curvature. The sharp, $H^{2+ε}$, local well-posedness result for general quasilinear wave equation was achieved by Smith and Tataru by constructing a parametr…
We introduce a notion of quasilinear parabolic equations over metric measure spaces. Under sharp structural conditions, we prove that local weak solutions are locally bounded and satisfy the parabolic Harnack inequality. Applications include the parabolic maximum principle and pointwise estimates for weak solutions.
We derive sharp estimates on the modulus of continuity for solutions of a large class of quasilinear isotropic parabolic equations on smooth metric measure spaces (with Dirichlet or Neumann boundary condition in case the boundary is non-empty). We also derive optimal lower bounds for the first Dirichlet eigenvalue of a class of homogeneous quasilinear operators, which include non-variational operators. The main feature is that this class of operators have corresponding one-dimensional operators, which allow sharp comparisons with solutions of one-dimensional equations.
In this paper study the regularity of continuous casting problem \begin{equation} \hbox{div}(|\nabla u|^{p-2}\nabla u-{\bf v} β(u))=0\tag{$\sharp$} \end{equation} for prescribed constant velocity $\bf v$ and enthalpy $β(u)$ with jump discontinuity at $u=0$. We establish the following estimates: local log-Lipschitz $p>2$ for $u$ (and BMO for $\nabla u$) for two phase, Lipschitz $p>1$ for one phase and linear growth up-to boundary near the contact points. We also prove that the free boundary is continuous curve in the direction of $\bf v$ in two spatial dimensions. The proof is based on a delica…
We are concerned with nonexistence results for a class of quasilinear parabolic differential problems with a potential in $Ω\times(0,+\infty)$, where $Ω$ is a bounded domain. In particular, we investigate how the behavior of the potential near the boundary of the domain and the power nonlinearity affect the nonexistence of solutions. Particular attention is devoted to the special case of the semilinear parabolic problem, for which we show that the critical rate of growth of the potential near the boundary ensuring nonexistence is sharp.
In this paper, we prove existence of \emph{very weak solutions} to nonhomogeneous quasilinear parabolic equations beyond the duality pairing. The main ingredients are a priori esitmates in suitable weighted spaces combined with the compactness argument developed in \cite{bulicek2018well}. In order to obtain the a priori estimates, we make use of the full Calderón-Zygmund machinery developed in the past few years and combine it with some sharp bounds for the subclass of Muckenhoupt weights considered in this paper.
We study the initial-boundary value problem of quasilinear wave equations outside of a star-shaped obstacle in four space dimensions, in which the nonlinear term under consideration may explicitly depend on the unknown function itself. By some new $L^{\infty}_{t}L^{2}_{x}$ and weighted $L^{2}_{t,x}$ estimates for the unknown function itself, together with energy estimates and KSS estimates, for the quasilinear obstacle problem we obtain a lower bound of the lifespan $T_{\varepsilon}\geq \exp{(\frac{c}{\varepsilon^2})}$, which coincides with the sharp lower bound of lifespan estimate for the co…
New sharp Strichartz estimates for the Maxwell system in two dimensions with rough permittivity and non-trivial charges are proved. We use the FBI transform to carry out the analysis in phase space. For this purpose, the Maxwell equations are conjugated to a system of half-wave equations with rough coefficients. For this system, Strichartz estimates are similarly derived as in previous work by Tataru on scalar wave equations with rough coefficients. We use the estimates to improve the local well-posedness theory for quasilinear Maxwell equations in two dimensions.
We study finite energy solutions to quasilinear elliptic equations of the type $$ -Δ_pu=σ\, u^q \quad \text{in } \mathbb{R}^n,$$ where $Δ_p$ is the $p$-Laplacian, $p>1$, and $σ$ is a nonnegative function (or measure) on $\mathbb{R}^n$, in the case $0<q < p-1$ ( below the "natural growth" rate $q=p-1$ ). We give an explicit necessary and sufficient condition on $σ$ which ensures that there exists a solution $u$ in the homogeneous Sobolev space $L_0^{1,p}(\mathbb{R}^n)$, and prove its uniqueness. Among our main tools are integral inequalities closely associated with this problem, and Wolff poten…
We prove almost Strichartz estimates found after adding regularity in the spherical coordinates for Schrödinger-like equations. The estimates are sharp up to endpoints. The proof relies on estimates involving spherical averages. Sharpness is discussed making use of a modified Knapp-type example.
We study the following quasilinear elliptic equation $$ -Δ_p u + (βΦ(x)-a(x)) u^{p-1} + b(x)g(u)=0 \quad \text{in } \mathbb{R}^N \quad \quad \quad (P_β) $$ where $p>1$, $Φ\in L^\infty_{loc}(\mathbb{R}^N)$, $a,b \in L^\infty(\mathbb{R}^N)$, $β,b,g \geq 0$. We provide a sharp criterion in terms of generalized principal eigenvalue for existence/nonexistence of positive solutions of ($P_β$) in suitable classes of functions. We derive the uniqueness result of ($P_β$) in those classes. Under additional conditions on $Φ$, we further show that : i) either for every $β\geq 0$ nonexistence phenomenon oc…

We prove a sharp multiplier theorem of Mihlin-Hörmander type for the Grushin operator on the unit sphere in $\mathbb{R}^3$, and a corresponding boundedness result for the associated Bochner-Riesz means. The proof hinges on precise pointwise bounds for spherical harmonics.
Let $d\geq 2$ be an integer and let $2d/(d-1) < q \leq \infty$. In this paper we investigate the sharp form of the mixed norm Fourier extension inequality \begin{equation*} \big\|\widehat{fσ}\big\|_{L^q_{\rm rad}L^2_{\rm ang}(\mathbb{R}^d)} \leq {\bf C}_{d,q}\, \|f\|_{L^2(\mathbb{S}^{d-1},{\rm d}σ)}, \end{equation*} established by L. Vega in 1988. Letting $\mathcal{A}_d \subset (2d/(d-1), \infty]$ be the set of exponents for which the constant functions on $\mathbb{S}^{d-1}$ are the unique extremizers of this inequality, we show that: (i) $\mathcal{A}_d$ contains the even integers and $\infty$…
We consider sharp interface asymptotics for a phase field model of two phase near spherical biomembranes involving a coupling between the local mean curvature and the local composition proposed by the first and second authors. The model is motivated by lipid raft formation. We introduce a reduced diffuse interface energy depending only on the membrane composition and derive the $Γ-$limit. We demonstrate that the Euler-Lagrange equations for the limiting functional and the sharp interface energy coincide. Finally, we consider a system of gradient flow equations with conserved Allen-Cahn dynamic…
A sharp $L^p$ spectral multiplier theorem of Mihlin--Hörmander type is proved for a distinguished sub-Laplacian on quaternionic spheres. This is the first such result on compact sub-Riemannian manifolds where the horizontal space has corank greater than one. The proof hinges on the analysis of the quaternionic spherical harmonic decomposition, of which we present an elementary derivation.
We present a new vector field approach to almost-sharp decay for the wave equation on spherically symmetric, stationary and asymptotically flat spacetimes. Specifically, we derive a new hierarchy of higher-order weighted energy estimates by employing appropriate commutator vector fields. In cases where an integrated local energy decay estimate holds, like in the case of sub-extremal Reissner-Nordstrom black holes, this hierarchy leads to almost-sharp global energy and pointwise time-decay estimates with decay rates that go beyond those obtained by the traditional vector field method. Our estim…
In this paper we study sharp estimates for the Schrödinger operator via the framework of orthogonal polynomials. We use spherical harmonics and Gegenbauer polynomials to prove a new weighted inequality for the Schrödinger equation that is maximized by radial functions. We use Hermite and Laguerre polynomial expansions to produce sharp Strichartz estimates for even exponents. In particular, for radial initial data in dimension 2, we establish an interesting connection of the Strichartz norm with a combinatorial problem about words with four letters.
