We consider sharp interface asymptotics for a phase field model of two phase near spherical biomembranes involving a coupling between the local mean curvature and the local composition proposed by the first and second authors. The model is motivated by lipid raft formation. We introduce a reduced diffuse interface energy depending only on the membrane composition and derive the $Γ-$limit. We demonstrate that the Euler-Lagrange equations for the limiting functional and the sharp interface energy coincide. Finally, we consider a system of gradient flow equations with conserved Allen-Cahn dynamics for the phase field model. Performing a formal asymptotic analysis we obtain a system of gradient flow equations for the sharp interface energy coupling geodesic curvature flow for the phase interface to a fourth order PDE free boundary problem for the surface deformation.
We derive a macroscopic limit for a sharp interface version of a model proposed in [29] to investigate pattern formation due to competition of chemical and mechanical forces in biomembranes. We identify sub- and supercrital parameter regimes and show with the introduction of the autocorrelation function that the ground state energy leads to the isoperimetric problem in the subcritical regime, which is interpreted to not form fine scale patterns.
We consider a model of a biomembrane with attached proteins. The membrane is represented by a near spherical continuous surface and attached proteins are described as discrete rigid structures which attach to the membrane at a finite number of points. The resulting surface minimises a quadratic elastic energy (obtained by a perturbation of the Canham-Helfrich energy) subject to the point constraints which are imposed by the attachment of the proteins. We calculate the derivative of the energy with respect to protein configurations. The proteins are constrained to move tangentially by translati…
We derive and analyse an energy to model lipid raft formation on biological membranes involving a coupling between the local mean curvature and the local composition. We apply a perturbation method recently introduced by Fritz, Hobbs and the first author to describe the geometry of the surface as a graph over an undeformed Helfrich energy minimising surface. The result is a surface Cahn-Hilliard functional coupled with a small deformation energy We show that suitable minimisers of this energy exist and consider a gradient flow with conserved Allen-Cahn dynamics, for which existence and uniquen…
In this contribution to the proceedings of the 11th Mathematical Society of Japan (MSJ) Seasonal Institute (July 2018) we give an overview of some recent work on a mathematical model for small deformations of a spherical membrane. The idea is to consider perturbations to minimisers of a surface geometric energy. The model is obtained from consideration of second order approximations to a perturbed energy. In particular, the considered problems involve particle constraints and surface phase field energies.
We prove almost Strichartz estimates found after adding regularity in the spherical coordinates for Schrödinger-like equations. The estimates are sharp up to endpoints. The proof relies on estimates involving spherical averages. Sharpness is discussed making use of a modified Knapp-type example.
We prove a sharp multiplier theorem of Mihlin-Hörmander type for the Grushin operator on the unit sphere in $\mathbb{R}^3$, and a corresponding boundedness result for the associated Bochner-Riesz means. The proof hinges on precise pointwise bounds for spherical harmonics.
A sharp $L^p$ spectral multiplier theorem of Mihlin--Hörmander type is proved for a distinguished sub-Laplacian on quaternionic spheres. This is the first such result on compact sub-Riemannian manifolds where the horizontal space has corank greater than one. The proof hinges on the analysis of the quaternionic spherical harmonic decomposition, of which we present an elementary derivation.
We present a new vector field approach to almost-sharp decay for the wave equation on spherically symmetric, stationary and asymptotically flat spacetimes. Specifically, we derive a new hierarchy of higher-order weighted energy estimates by employing appropriate commutator vector fields. In cases where an integrated local energy decay estimate holds, like in the case of sub-extremal Reissner-Nordstrom black holes, this hierarchy leads to almost-sharp global energy and pointwise time-decay estimates with decay rates that go beyond those obtained by the traditional vector field method. Our estim…
In this paper, we prove a sharp local well-posedness result for spherically symmetric solutions to quasilinear wave equations with rough initial data, when the spatial dimension is three or higher. Our approach is based on Morawetz type local energy estimates with fractional regularity for linear wave equations with variable $C^1$ coefficients, which rely on multiplier method, weighted Littlewood-Paley theory, duality and interpolation. Together with weighted linear and nonlinear estimates (including weighted trace estimates, Hardy's inequality, fractional chain rule and fractional Leibniz rul…

Let $d\geq 2$ be an integer and let $2d/(d-1) < q \leq \infty$. In this paper we investigate the sharp form of the mixed norm Fourier extension inequality \begin{equation*} \big\|\widehat{fσ}\big\|_{L^q_{\rm rad}L^2_{\rm ang}(\mathbb{R}^d)} \leq {\bf C}_{d,q}\, \|f\|_{L^2(\mathbb{S}^{d-1},{\rm d}σ)}, \end{equation*} established by L. Vega in 1988. Letting $\mathcal{A}_d \subset (2d/(d-1), \infty]$ be the set of exponents for which the constant functions on $\mathbb{S}^{d-1}$ are the unique extremizers of this inequality, we show that: (i) $\mathcal{A}_d$ contains the even integers and $\infty$…
In this paper, we study the future causally geodesically complete solutions of the spherically symmetric Einstein-scalar field system. Under the a priori assumption that the scalar field $ϕ$ scatters locally in the scale-invariant bounded-variation (BV) norm, we prove that $ϕ$ and its derivatives decay polynomially. Moreover, we show that the decay rates are sharp. In particular, we obtain sharp quantitative decay for the class of global solutions with small BV norms constructed by Christodoulou. As a consequence of our results, for every future causally geodesically complete solution with suf…
In this paper we study sharp estimates for the Schrödinger operator via the framework of orthogonal polynomials. We use spherical harmonics and Gegenbauer polynomials to prove a new weighted inequality for the Schrödinger equation that is maximized by radial functions. We use Hermite and Laguerre polynomial expansions to produce sharp Strichartz estimates for even exponents. In particular, for radial initial data in dimension 2, we establish an interesting connection of the Strichartz norm with a combinatorial problem about words with four letters.
We prove almost sharp upper bounds for the $L^p$ norms of eigenfunctions of the full ring of invariant differential operators on a compact locally symmetric space, as well as their restrictions to maximal flat subspaces. Our proof combines techniques from semiclassical analysis with harmonic theory on reductive groups, and makes use of new asymptotic bounds for spherical functions that are of independent interest.
We investigate the validity and the stability of various Minkowski-like inequalities for $C^1$-perturbations of the ball. Let $K\subseteq\mathbb R^n$ be a domain (possibly not convex and not mean-convex) which is $C^1$-close to a ball. We prove the sharp geometric inequality $$ \left(\int_{\partial K} \lVert II\rVert_1 d\mathscr H^{n-1}\right)^{\frac1{n-2}} \ge C_1(n)Per(K)^{\frac1{n-1}} , $$ where $C_1(n)$ is the constant that yields the equality when $K=B_1$ (and $\lVert II\rVert_1$ is the sum of the absolute values of the eigenvalues of the second fundamental form $II$ of $\partial K$). Mor…
In this contribution we investigate the Schrördinger equation associated to the Laplacian on the sphere in the form of sharp Strichartz estimates. We will provided simple proofs for our main theorems using purely the $L^2\rightarrow L^p$ spectral estimates for the operator norm of the spectral projections (associated to the spherical harmonics) proved in [8]. A sharp index of regularity is established for the initial data in spheres of arbitrary dimension $d\geq 2$.
Published in 1999, Christodoulou proved that the naked singularities of a self-gravitating scalar field are not stable in spherical symmetry and therefore the cosmic censorship conjecture is true in this context. The original proof is by contradiction and sharp estimates are obtained strictly depending on spherical symmetry. In this paper, appropriate a priori estimates for the solution are obtained. These estimates are more relaxed but sufficient for giving another robust argument in proving the instability, in particular not by contradiction. In another related paper, we are able to prove in…
In this note we analyse $L^{p}$ estimates for Laplacian eigenfunctions and quasimodes and their associated sharp examples. In particular we use previously determined estimates to produce a new set of estimates for restriction to thickened neighbourhoods of submanifolds. In addition we produce a family flat model quasimode examples that can be used to determine sharpness of estimates on Laplacian eigenfunctions restricted to subsets. For each quasimode in the family we show that there is a corresponding spherical harmonic that displays the same growth properties. Therefore it is enough to check…
We show that the spherically symmetric Einstein-scalar-field equations for wave-like decaying initial data at null infinity have unique local solutions and unique global solutions for small initial data. We also generalize Christodoulou's global generalized solutions to the wave-like decaying initial data. We emphasize that this decaying condition is sharp.
We consider a weighted eigenvalue problem for the Dirichlet laplacian in a smooth bounded domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^N$, where the bang-bang weight equals a positive constant $\overline{m}$ on a ball $B\subsetΩ$ and a negative constant $-\underline{m}$ on $Ω\setminus B$. The corresponding positive principal eigenvalue provides a threshold to detect persistence/extinction of a species whose evolution is described by the heterogeneous Fisher-KPP equation in population dynamics. In particular, we study the minimization of such eigenvalue with respect to the position of $B$ in $Ω$. We provide sha…
For general gravitational collapse, inside the black-hole region, singularities $(r=0)$ may arise. In this article, we aim to answer how strong these singularities could be. We analyse the behaviours of various geometric quantities. In particular, we show that in the most singular scenario, the Kretschmann scalar obeys polynomial blow-up upper bounds $O(1/r^N)$. This improves previously best-known double-exponential upper bounds $O\big(\exp\exp(1/r)\big)$. Our result is sharp in the sense that there are known examples showing that no sub-polynomial upper bound could hold. Finally we do a case …
